PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

It sounds like a substantial upgrade. And the price sounds right. Honestly, I might well be in for this.

Damn... Now to decide when it makes the most sense to sell my PS4... And I might as well sell my Xbox One while I'm at it. God knows it's just a Netflix machine at this point anyway, and whatever I eventually want to play is going to end up on my PC.

PS4K would be a terrible name for this system when the only things it'll be able to natively run at 4K are movies and less graphically intense "indie" type games. There's no way this box will even approach 4K30fps at $400/$500.

why are some here so against this?

you can still play the same games on your vanilla PS4 no need to upgrade to the new PS4 if you are happy with the vanilla PS4 graphics.

same system but with more powerful parts.

Essentially, that's what we expected PS5 to be. New OS, but no reason it couldn't be backwards compatible like this seems to be.

It's like PS5 with mandatory cross gen. The power gap is big.

Where are we at?

Where does "fuck it, I hope NX gets it right" fall? I have no problem accepting that I'm really not interested in the trends going down on PS4/Xbox (time consuming social games, VR, walking simulators, broken fragmented releases, increasing homogenization, etc.) at the moment as long as Nintendo keeps things interesting.

What angers me about the PS4K is that games are supposedly being made for it that will suffer from poor performance on PS4, a system I've owned for 2 years and only enjoyed 4 or 5 games on.

Something tells me this is being blown way out of proportion and I also do not see Sony engaging in such a daring adventure when they almost got bankrupt.

The property buildings they had that they sold probably saved their asses, and the Playstation brand is almost the only profitable region right now.

Why fuck with that stability by introducing such a thing that can divide your average consumer base.

Man, I will have only had my PS4 for a year when this thing comes out. Hopefully the retailers will offer some kind of nice trade in deal.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. PC gaming is my main platform, so I am used to expensive upgrades, but this just feels weird and like Microsoft and Sony flat out admitting that they screwed up when building the PS4 and Xbox one. Are they not making enough money on console sales, or are the developers making a huge deal out of the low power compared to what PC's are easily capable of?

I find it very hard to believe that there won't be PS4K exclusives if those genuinely are the specs.

That comment isn't defensive. Perception is everything and the way it's worded, and will be reported by other outlets, could and likely will be received negatively. Instead of it becoming an incentive to buy a PS4K, it's become a reason for people to be annoyed at Sony. These leaks are a perfect example of how they can damage markets. It hasn't given Sony time to put the messaging in place, it's generated it's own messaging, as demonstrated by this thread and the many alarmist comments. That ONE sentence is the most destructive thing written so far.

Oh, I know what you mean. If Sony did anything right this gen, then it was wording and perception. Now with this leak, it wasn't up to Sony to deliver the message which could mean that it will not be like in OP and many people hope but it's also not irrational to expect the worst currently.

I don't really care to see games being rendered at native 4k.

Give us 1080p 60 fps on PS4k and 900p/1080p 30 on PS4.
Sure, your favorite games will still play fine.
They will just play better on PS4k.

A GPU twice as powerful is really enough to have games running both at 4K and better performance than the PS4? I find it very unlikely.

Unless these games that take advantage of the hardware will actually be 1080p.

No, not without considerable sacrifices to the effects displayed on screen. I don't even think 2x puts it in the league of a GTX 970.

Does anyone have a rough approximation for what 2 x the GPU of the current PS4 would be equivalent to in terms of PC GPUs.

Sounds sweet, I'm in.

I do hope some devs will go the extra mile and patch their old games to enhance performance on the new hardware.

Yes, I'm looking at you, CDPR. Make The Witcher 3 even better on PS4K pls

Oh I'm sure devs will be incentivized by Sony to release "Definitive 4K Editions" of games rather than simply patching the ones people already own.

This gen was going so well, too.

So if this is mod approved, is it pretty much confirmed?

This is a BIG ONE. One hell of a thing to leak.

I'm assuming for this particular thread they vetted the hell out of it before allowing it to be posted, even though I'm aware that user has been a vetted source for a while.

So yeah, its pretty much confirmed more than likely.

You don't need to replace your PS4. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Okay, look. Here is the deal. In console land, no one wants to be left behind. Console selling points have always been simplicity. This kills that. Let's assume that EVERYTHING in the OP is true (big assumption).

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."

The bolded are two very big points of contention. No one wants to own the worse version of the system that plays the same games as another. That goes against the reason for buying a console. This is why PS4 comes out on top. You have one game for PS4/XB1 and it just performs better on PS4. This is a big reason why people bought it. Now, you have one game that plays better on a newer version of the same console family than you one you have. That sucks ass as a consumer. That's just one more thing to think about and if you just bought one six months before this release? You will feel shat on.

Now, lets say you upgrade? Well, the games you have make not upgrade along with your system naturally. PC games do this. Now its up to devs on a per game basis? There is no promise they will do this. That sucks too!

If hardcore gamers are split on this, regular consumers will HATE THIS. It will cause confusion. It will leave some feeling like they got a raw deal.

So, no. You don't need to replace your PS4. However, when you now look at it after the PS4K hits, you know you're missing out. On what? Doesn't matter. That feeling will be there and it will suck.

Guess it's time for me to switch to the model my friend used of "wait until the end of a generation before buying a system". I'll just wait until the last in the PS4 "family" and buy the most powerful PS4 and play all the games I couldn't because they run too much like utter shit on the normal PS4 while I wait for the last in the PS5 family.

Only issue is avoiding spoilers for games that are exclusive to PS4K or 8K or hyper turbo edition or the ones that run like even more ass on the old, shitty, worthless PS4.

why is this not PS5? this jump is crazy and to get to it, owners basically have to say farewell to their whole cash sum paid on PS4.

It's not crazy though. Jesus christ lol 2x the GPU power is NOT A LOT. It's nowhere near a generational leap. As I've said earlier in the thread, the best it'll be able to pull off is current gen AAA games at a higher framerate and a few more effects turned on. Not at 4k, and not still anything close to a PC on Ultra.

Depression. (about consoles).
.

This really does undermine what I look to a console for and I can't stand the Apple model of hyperspeed obsolescence, made worse when applied to games where performance can vary so much across titles and when so many of them already suffer from performance issues.

More powerful hardware doesn't solve console problems, it just adds to the costs.

I did guess as much. Denial and shock were the earlier rumor threads. Bargaining will start before E3 and acceptance phase when they show how games will look on the 4K

Even at twice the power of Ps4, that won't be enough to do 4k competently. 4k is four times the resolution of 1080p. I'm no expert, but it would seem we'd need four times the Ps4's power, not just twice.

Did Sony officially announce PS4k and date? Everything is speculation until its announce similar to the 4GB vs 8GB Ram fiasco up to PS4 launch.
That's exactly why I said Sony can't be that stupid, because this is speculation. I have to believe that this isn't entirely accurate until it's confirmed otherwise, the business of it is just too strange.

Considering some devs don't know how to optimise for shit on the current PS4 this makes me worried about the even crappier ports once the PS4K optimised games will come out..

I understand why they're doing this, but this might kill a lot of enthusiasm for consoles. People will be afraid to buy new consoles for the fear of impending superior versions. I know I will be.

Jesus....I'd be salty as fuck if I'd just purchased a PS4 in the past 4 months or so, or even at Christmas. Although I'm going to wait and see. I'm approaching this how I do my phones. I only get numbered entries. Ss and GSs and .5s can piss off imo. I need significant improvement and I don't see that happening until 2020.

Ok that's a nice upgrade. If they're gonna do this then go all out and add the upgraded CPU for $499. They just need to keep the standard PS4 for dropping to $299 and below.
