PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I'm OK with this as long as:

- There are no "PS4K Exclusive!!!" games and you can still play any new games just fine on your regular ol' ps4
- The performance boost and new features are worth the price to upgrade
- There's some form of upgrade system/discount in place for existing ps4 owners

You have the NX coming out which is supposedly as powerful if not more so than the ps4 and xb1, and you'll likely have an Xbox equivalent coming out the door soon as well, so it doesn't shock me that Sony would do something like this. This is likely the future for gaming consoles.

Eh, I'm ok with this. Why would a group of people who are ok with spending $400 (or more) on upgrading their cell phones every couple of years be bent out of shape on upgrading their gaming hobby box of choice for the same price at the same interval?

It's not like PS4 games are suddenly going to get worse by the appearance of a PS4K. Everything that's good about the PS4 will remain just as good, only now their will be a stronger hardware version for certain games that take advantage of it.

Hopefully Sony will have better support the PS4K than Nintendo has had for the New 3DS!

To say that a heavy graphic game like Deep Down belongs to PS4K horse power machine is as false as to say that Agnis Philosophy is too.
They are DirectX12 with GTX TITAN X tech demos, just like the first trailer of Watch Dogs, and they recently will be "games" on PS5 or 6.

Just look again for god sake:

If console games are to keep pushing the envelope in terms of visuals, I think this a necessary evil. 6+ year lifespans don't sound very viable to me anymore. Imagine PS4 games released toward the end of this generation - could they really look marginally better than a game like Uncharted 4? That game is already maxing out the PS4's hardware, and we're just three years into this gen.

why are some here so against this?

you can still play the same games on your vanilla PS4 no need to upgrade to the new PS4 if you are happy with the vanilla PS4 graphics.

Because games won't be optimized for vanilla PS4 and a console isn't a PC where you can tweak the settings to your liking for better performance.

These systems are generally based off of off-the-shelf APUs so they're presumably looking at two basic options AMD set up for them at separate price points.

I won't say that PS4 APU was ahead of all the other APUs that AMD had at the time.
Plus they also did customs things to it .

People here don't care because they think Sony can do no wrong. Sony could probably sell these people another PS4 3 years into the life cycle! Wait... that's exactly what they're doing.
And what's wrong with that? I would have gladly paid for an upgraded PS3/360 last generation. I would like the option to not be stuck with the same specs for 5+ years

What is so hard to grasp.

I can upgrade by selling my console, retain ALL my sofware, and gain access to better looking software. Yes that is same as PC approach, but I like console gaming and streamlined access to entertainment it gives me.

I figure my current PS4 will be a hand-me-down for the kids and I get the new shiny toy.

So basically this generation is very short, and then we will get PS4K/5 with backwards compatibility. Yikes.
With Microsoft doing presumably the same thing, I wonder where Nintendo will end up with NX. Will it be as late to the party as Wii U (power wise)?

Stop with this argument and read the OP. If devs are concentrating on PS4K development then there will be significant reduction in graphics for PS4 titles.

Even at twice the power of Ps4, that won't be enough to do 4k competently. 4k is four times the resolution of 1080p. I'm no expert, but it would seem we'd need four times the Ps4's power, not just twice.

I'm not talking about the 4k resolution as you couldn't transfer the benefit during the live stream of the e3 conference.

not sure what people are worried about this

It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

if the new PS4K didn't exist you would still have the same game with the same performance, this doesn't change anything. developers will still make games for the 40million people out there with an OG PS4 and simply enable a performance boost for those with a PS4K.

Best outcome I imagined. Software compatibility is retained, but hardware is beefed up considerably. Plus, GT Sport will take advantage of it.

If this lands at $400€ I will be officialy hyped.

And LOL, we will finally get these flames!

Pls no Sony!
I don't have money for a new console

Prepare to get all MP portions of games on PS4 to be at 60 fps to keep it possible to play with PS4K versions. And in a few years they will look like absolute trash on "early adopter" console. I also can see Uncharted 4 60fps patch with a fancy trailer and colorful slogans "the way its meant to be played" all over youtube.

That's exactly why I said Sony can't be that stupid, because this is speculation. I have to believe that this isn't entirely accurate until it's confirmed otherwise, the business of it is just too strange.

They just want the Apple styled revenue.

We'll see. The same thing should have happened with DSi and New 3DS.

I'll be interested early if they make Bloodborne 60fps on it. Otherwise, I'll wait for From's next exclusive.

No, not without considerable sacrifices to the effects displayed on screen. I don't even think 2x puts it in the league of a GTX 970.

Does anyone have a rough approximation for what 2 x the GPU of the current PS4 would be equivalent to in terms of PC GPUs.

A bit more than a 770?

You guys really think Sony is the one running this? Microsoft have been doing this too. They are both tryna out edge each other in power seeing who will jump first and what were getting will be something fun to watch.

Deep Down??

I know that you were just doing your job, but I am ready to shoot the messenger here and blame this all on you.

Your next hot scoop is going to be scooping the pieces of my broken heart off of the floor. :(

It feels like AMD came to both of them with a sweetheart deal.

You do if you want the best possible graphical output. I would say that most core gamers fall into this category.

Not just that but you know that they're going to focus on the better specced system and push that as their front runner while the regular one takes a back seat to it. Especially if sales are going well. People have a right to be upset. it hasn't even been 3 years and now their ps4s are possibly obsolete and especially non first day buyers may be kicking themselves for not waiting. And why should they have waited? Since when do consoles do upgrades like this? And hell Sony is certainly not coming out and letting people know whats going on. They're going to keep their ps4.5 details a secret to keep their ps4 sales going without informing potential customers who may end up feeling like they just threw away money. Not everyone is as informed about rumors either.

Yet Sony is going to release a new $400 SKU, and do little-to-nothing to convince people to upgrade?

Nintendo just did the same exact kind of thing. They had no trouble selling n3DS systems, some folks upgraded and it just eventually phased out the old system. But at no point did Nintendo ever make it a real priority to get people to upgrade, they weren't going to bail on that many systems sold.

My wallet is ready,
for NX that is, fuck this shit

Nintendo is releasing a new console potentially after 4 years on the market.
It is effectively rendering the Wii U obsolete.

The PS4K will likely be out after 4 years and won't render your old system obsolete. The PS4 will still be getting new games.

Not having a trade in program would be really shitty. Not to mention that most people don't have 4K TV's yet.

Also, will there be a different price point for 4K games?

Uncharted 5 - $59.99
Uncharted 5(4K) - $69.99

Well they won't be native 4K, so no. There will only be 1 version of the game. It will have 2 different performance levels based on your hardware though.

I went through the 7 stages much quicker than expected! I guess I'll wait and see what's true and what isn't before I completely flip out.

There is literally no reason for anyone to give a fuck about optimising for OG PS4 if this is real.

  1. More hassle for devs when they can just optimise for the more powerful system and turn down sliders til it "works"
  2. Sony is sure as hell not going to encourage good optimisation for OG when they stand to make money selling PS4Ks
  3. History has already shown us time and time again that most pubs don't give a fuck about acceptable performance standards with down-ports, as evidenced by the myriad of dreadful cross-gen releases that we JUST escaped from

Seriously. This gen JUST started. Such a terrible idea.

For the people saying "more options" - there is already an option for you where you can pay as much as you want for as much power as you want. For the people saying the phone cycle works - phone sales are DRAMATICALLY slowing down because they've got to a point where people don't care about the improvements because they're happy where they are. This is a terrible, terrible idea.

2x1.84 tflops = 3.68 tflops (PS4k)
3.70 tflops (OC GTX 970 with 1253mhz Boost) single precision
