PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

No, not without considerable sacrifices to the effects displayed on screen. I don't even think 2x puts it in the league of a GTX 970.

Does anyone have a rough approximation for what 2 x the GPU of the current PS4 would be equivalent to in terms of PC GPUs.

2x actually does put in the realm of a 970. Roughly 3.7 (2x PS4) vs 3.9. Also note the PS4 can utilize its RAM at full bandwidth compared to the 970's last .5 GB.

As someone who doesn't own a PS4 I am thrilled that I can wait for the twice as powerful version plus the extra future proofing.

Turns out waiting was the smart move.

The better the PS4K is the happier I will be.

Until they release a PS8K three years later and you find yourself on the same position PS4 buyers are now.

It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

God damn it, no. I'm ok with the idea of stronger versions of existing consoles in theory, but if there's going to be a bunch of games that are designed specifically with PS4K in mind that end up being gutted on OG PS4 that's gonna be a problem. Hyrule Warriors Legends-performance on the OG 3DS is a good example of this when gone wrong.

The last big NeoGAF leak was:

I'll wait and see.

To be fair, that wasn't verified by a mod, and, while made by a gaffer, was reposted from reddit. Not the same thing. PS4K is definitely a thing though, even if the details here are wrong or fake. There's too much smoke.

why are some here so against this?

you can still play the same games on your vanilla PS4 no need to upgrade to the new PS4 if you are happy with the vanilla PS4 graphics.

Look at how many PS4 (and Xbone) games run badly or sub-par. This is with only one SKU to develop for where they know the limits of the system but they still try and push more for "oooh more pretty!" so we get games that look nice but still stutter or have frame drops. This will get even worse now there will be another SKU that is more powerful. I highly doubt devs will bother optimising their game on the old PS4 hardware, we'll get games that still run at 30fps with dips and looking pretty on the 4K and run even worse on the PS4.

Ill probably buy this at some point, glad I didnt buy a PS4 yet.

Wont this make multi-platform game development even more expensive?

I hope this isn't true. I love my PS4, and to think Sony is going to shoot it in the head after 3 years is infuriating to me. I don't want crappier versions of 4k games. It just means no one will attempt to draw more power out of it. 4k is a useless tech at this point anyways. You would think a company that has sold a huge amount of consoles like Sony wouldn't want to piss it users off, but no, I guess not.

On the one hand, the samsung 4k bluray player is 400 bucks on its own, and I could use one

on the other hand, I play PC primarily and the consoles are a once every~6 year purchase to supplement. this basically puts me in the done with consoles camp if it rings true.

That's exactly why I said Sony can't be that stupid, because this is speculation. I have to believe that this isn't entirely accurate until it's confirmed otherwise, the business of it is just too strange.

This is ALL IN on VR, like it or not. I don't think Sony expected VR to take off before PS5 was ready, bug everyone jumped in the game and the tech and software is maturing much faster than expected.

The PS4 could never be a viable platform for VR outside of Indy games. It was never going to run SW Battlefront VR.

This is their stopgap solution to not be left behind. And they're going to wager the success of the PS4 on it. That's how important they see VR apparently, so should make VR heads pretty happy.

Btw its not really suprising that games wont get better without updates.

Most games so far are build with hardware specific profiles. There is always a "Durango" and "Orbis" Profile that utilizes that specific Hardware.

Games need to be updated with another Profile that will be used if the better Hardware is detected.

This things dont work out of the gate.

Related info from a meeting we had yesterday was waiting for it to be approved before posting.

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.

Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."

For the PSVR

Eve Valkyrie
Robinson
GT Sport

For the PS4K

Deep Down (Thought this was dead)
GOW4 (This was the exact abbreviation on the sheet I can only assume its god of war 4)

There were more games on the list but these are the ones that stood out to me.

Bring it on, Sony. Cannot really understand why people do not want better things. Gaf is acting like if Sony or devs would just abandon their 30M userbase and will develop for PS4K only. At best we'll get few "launch" titles and few patches / more stable fps elsewhere.

Dont like it - dont buy and you ll still be fine.

Bring on the PS4K.

I won't get one at launch, but if this means I'll get to enjoy more games on my PS4 in the future instead of being forced to upgrade to a PS5 so be it.

why are some here so against this?

you can still play the same games on your vanilla PS4 no need to upgrade to the new PS4 if you are happy with the vanilla PS4 graphics.

The frustrating part is that games are supposedly being designed for the higher specs and the expectation is that those games will look and run poorly on PS4. Will it be a big difference? Who knows.

It's just a little salt in the wound for people like me who already aren't impressed with PS4's library knowing that in the near future most games may or may not be subpar on the system. It's also bad news who aren't interested in VR. All this together makes it look like people owning vanilla PS4s aren't really going to get as much out of their system as they were hoping.

Sounds good to me as someone who doesn't own a PS4 yet.

Sucks for those who already own one, but I don't really care since you got to experience it for 3 years already.

I haven't updated my i7 in 8 years :-p
Yeah, for pc you only need to upgrade the GPU every 2 years or so if you want to play at highest settings, can of course go longer if you don't care about maxing things out. But stuff like case, memory, hard drives, CPU, keyboard, mouse can last a really long time. My case is 7 years old, my motherboard, memory, keyboard, mouse, and hard drives are 5 years old (aside from 2 year old SSD) - none are holding me back. An overclocked I7 Sandy bridge CPU from 2011 is barely different than 2016 Skylake for gaming purposes. The main cost in pc gaming after your initial purchase is GPU upgrades, which you can partially offset by selling your old GPUs. You can of course sell your old PS4 to help offset the purchase of the new one, but if you are going to have go the typical pc upgrade route, why not just switch to pc with far better graphics, cheaper games, and more uses than a console.

Let me help you: those who really care for spec bumps and are willing to buy every console Sony releases from now on are going to spend as much as PC enthusiasts.

Do the math:
You have bought PS4 in 2014 400$
You are buying PS4K in 2016 400$
You are buying PS 5 in 2018 400$

And don't fool yourselves - the PS4K power advantage won't last forever. In two years games will be released targetting at the specs of PS5 and you suckahs will once again play with 30pfs and below ;P
This is good news for everyone who was going to buy a PS4 soon. Existing PS4 users are
basically fucked, if they feel that their investment hasn't paid off yet when looking at the games being release in that time-frame.

There is kind of a huge difference between spending $1200 at one time and spending it over 5 or 6 years. That's a huge deal. I can find a way to budget in $400 this year, I can't budget in over $1000. Plus, I'll still be able to trade or sell my PS4 ... That matters, too.

Eh, I'm ok with this. Why would a group of people who are ok with spending $400 (or more) on upgrading their cell phones every couple of years be bent out of shape on upgrading their gaming hobby box of choice for the same price at the same interval?

It's not like PS4 games are suddenly going to get worse by the appearance of a PS4K. Everything that's good about the PS4 will remain just as good, only now their will be a stronger hardware version for certain games that take advantage of it.

Hopefully Sony will have better support the PS4K than Nintendo has had for the New 3DS!

Sure. if devs target PS4.5 with the intention of porting the game over to OG Ps4, games will remain just as good on Ps4. The same way last gen ports on Ps3 and 360 from Ps4 games were just so terrific.

Im looking at upgrading....average 4k or really good 1080 screen? Might just wait a bit longer to see if ps4k is real and how many £££s

If you can find a decently priced 4K screen without abysmal input lag I'd say go for it.

But that is just it... There is no reasonably priced 4K screen without it having terrible input lag.

There is literally no reason for anyone to give a fuck about optimising for OG PS4 if this is real.

  1. More hassle for devs when they can just optimise for the more powerful system and turn down sliders til it "works"
  2. Sony is sure as hell not going to encourage good optimisation for OG when they stand to make money selling PS4Ks
  3. History has already shown us time and time again that most pubs don't give a fuck about acceptable performance standards with down-ports, as evidenced by the myriad of dreadful cross-gen releases that we JUST escaped from

Seriously. This gen JUST started. Such a terrible idea.

For the people saying "more options" - there is already an option for you where you can pay as much as you want for as much power as you want. For the people saying the phone cycle works - phone sales are DRAMATICALLY slowing down because they've got to a point where people don't care about the improvements because they're happy where they are. This is a terrible, terrible idea.

I think more devs are going to start focusing on this PS4K over the PS4 and games on that will get worse and worse performance wise. This is just a terrible way to burn a lot of bridges very quickly with consumers.

I doubt many games will be native 4K.

Sounds like it is just hardware upscale ala Xbox One 1080pr.

It's a nice feature, but understand what you're getting.

Wait a tick. This just doesn't seem to line up with me. The announcement is supposed to be PSVR...which is in October. OK.

The titles OP says it WILL LAUNCH WITH are GOW4 and Deep Down?

Deep Down is so random and God of War 4 seems far off. Fall of this year is the absolute earliest GOW4 could launch but we've heard absolutely NOTHING. Unless there's a full reveal at E3 I call bullshit.

If the PS4K is launched next year then it will derail the sales of the PS4! Who would buy one this holiday season when something big is right around the corner? I guess drop the price to $299 to make up for it?

It will have to launch this holiday season. Will there be a new PSVR model that doesn't come with the processor unit? Why haven't we heard ANYTHING about God of War 4?

I just dont understand this. The risk is high and the reward is tiny. Try this with a struggling console, not with one thats outpacing the ps2.

That's the reason they're probably going to take this risk now. The PS4 is selling so well.

That plus VR needs to land properly. Seeing as Sony has bet big on it.
