PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Maybe this 3rd year revision was always the plan but the devs threw their toys out the pram when they found out?

They want to make the best looking games......and work on the most powerful hardware.

I'd be surprised if developers were upset. Your average developer with a PC background who is now working on consoles as well tries to throw every new technology in the book into their PC version.

I'm sure they'd love to get those effects into at least some console version as well.

Console-only developers may be a different story.

Developers are usually the first ones rattling the cages demanding new hardware to boot.

Sounds horrible. I was all aboard if it just meant performance bumps, but actually having it be the target platform means it's essentially a ps5... It'll be cross gen launch titles all over again, where neither peice of hardware gets the attention it deserves.

I'm seriously disappointed right now. We'd had, what? 1.5 years of games since the first year was a writeoff and now my PS4 is essentially useless. Most games going forward will probably target PS4K and I'll have as shitty time on PS4 most likely.

Guess I'm done.
.

Only Sony could use VR as an excuse to fuck the userbase. Instead of proprietary memory cards for the Vita you have a proprietary PS4 for PSVR lmao.

Isn't this a move that'll potentially stop PS4s momentum? Consumers would get confused that their games don't look like the trailers anymore and there is suddenly a 1k bundle out there. It's like this PS4 was early access lol.

Games already don't look like the trailers. So nah.

And everyone will be buying this system when they see it in action.

There going to have a hard sell on this. I already preordered psvr and trying to buy that and this new ps4 in the same year is going to be hard, plus 4K tv. That's 1500 bucks minimum. I'd be better off upgrading to a 980 and an occulus.

I still need to know how much better those PS4K games will look and if 1080p60 is on the table. I don't care about 4k30 since I don't own a 4K TV.

Yeah because there were no great games on the PC prior to the glory of our lord and savior the Windows 10 store.

I'm obviously referring to people that primarily game on consoles for console games and I'm sorry man but the AAA space on PC isn't what it used to be. If you like those experiences which I do then I will still be chained to Sony and Nintendo unless that changes.

im sure this has been beaten to death already but

did they forget that sega exists or something

this kind of shit has been tried and the market rejected it

And again. A sane post. Thank you. This is great news all around.

Its not insane to be concerned. They discussed this very issue on the bombcast last week. Its not crazy to think that if better hardware out there, the old hardware games will be compromised.

It may not happen, but I doubt it.

So, can someone explain how this will work? The 'NEW' games will NOT be developed with 4K resolution, but CAN be upscaled to 4K (?), and they will perform significantly worse on the current PS4 consoles?

Am I right?

I can't help but feel this will force Microsoft's hand.

Can you imagine there being TWO Playstations on the market more powerful than the Xbox One?

That seems untenable for Microsoft.

Sony moving with lighting speed on VR and new consoles and MS appearing to be stuck.....
Sony did it for the Lulz

there will surely be an Xbox Universe

I just totally disagree. Millions of console users are left in the dust every turn of a cycle, this is just that on a smaller scale. Why do you think there are so many people in this thread worried about performance on the OG ps4? There's nothing you can say that would assure me in 2 years the ps4.0 versions of games aren't going to be gimped or compromised significantly.

If they aren't going to push the 4.5 hardware, why even bother with this. You KNOW the next Uncharted or KZ is going to be focused on squeezing the new box so they can have a mindblowing graphics demo/commercial/etc. Otherwise why bother.

I assume the primary intention was to make VR games better and not to push a new graphical standard for non-VR games.

This still makes absolutely no sense to me. PS4 still sells a boatload, even talk of a PS4K will hit the sales starting from the next months.
Pandora's box has been opened and they won't be able to close it anymore until E3.
The talk about Sony wanting to sell 4K TVs is absolute nonsense. The market is already saturated with 4K TV supply. A consumer has enough brands to chose from, so a PS4K won't necessarily help Sony sell 4K TVs.

Furthermore I still feel the game development side is still unaccounted for. Just look at all the game titles that slipped beyond 3 years of production. Sure, only a fraction is in full development for 3 years, but that makes preproduction even a worse hassle. I don't know, the open talk of a succesor box comes about a year to early I feel. I expected a five year cycle considering the x86 architecture and the cost-efficient but weak APU, but 3 years? Still sounds idiotic to me.

Unnecessary move to fuck up a totally good thing.

You're understanding it wrong.

Every game will run on both SKUs.

Games will look better on the 4K SKU.

Only if the developer intentionally supports it. The inclination given in the op is that most games already out will not receive any sort of upgrade.

I have enough of a backlog, I think from now on I'll be waiting until the end of the gen before picking up the console and all the budget games I've been holding out for...

I was about to get an xbox one too...glad I waited on that one!

either that or get a new PC that can handle everything and can upgrade as I go....

I JUST bought my PS4.

;_______;

Nah but, idk... At least from my personal experience I'm between a rock and a hard place. On one hand the types of games I favour, generally, maybe they won't benefit so much from the upgrade so I can afford not to. But I dunno... There's part of me who has that niggling need for perfection. I just don't want to pay the extra when that can be going to other things. Ehhhh.

If I do get it it won't be this year anyway since I'll just put my money toward NX, so screw it, I'll probably just move on and ignore the 4K. I won't be happy though!!!!!

Oh i get it. I´m kinda like that myself. If there is something better, i want it, even if it doesn´t really make much of a difference. Looking over the fence, seing something better makes what i have somewhat deminish, even if it really doesn´t. Humans, amiright?

So...who is this for?

1st day adopters....Who probbaly didn't think they would upgrade so soon?
It's obviously not for those who don't buy until a price drop... or PC Master race.

Maybe now we have a new team. A new party. Elite Console Master Race.

If the base GPU is 3.6Tf (PS4 x 2) + overclock then we are talking GTX 970+ GPU performance. O_o

That's not even taking into consideration console specific optimizations and fixed target hardware...

Jesus.

Not gonna happend. 970 is 4.2 Tf btw.

amazing reactions in here.

people are acting like Sony just had a reveal and announced this hardware for holiday 2016. we might be a year and a half away from launch still.

I assume the primary intention was to make VR games better and not to push a new graphical standard for non-VR games.

The OP seems to make it seem different. Also, what if I do want to play VR on my old box (which I have preordered btw) - uhhhh how does that make me feel?

I'm expecting a new box every 3 years with alternating names between full numbered iterations and incremental iterations.

I don't think the idea is to do a one-off faster upgrade. That would be odd.

The one after this is just gonna be a PS5 that is backwards compatible to PS4 games. Games made for that 'PS5' will run like complete dogshit on PS4's now.

I can't help but feel this will force Microsoft's hand.

Its not forcing MS hand at all, in fact this may be the exact reverse. MS has had a more powerful box in development for a while now

Fuck this shit. If this is true I'm definitely out.

The only plus consoles still have now is the fixed hardware. And devs still manage to deliver games that perform like crap.
Next the games on ps4 will run like N64 games if you don't want to or can't shell out another 400-500€ every two years?
Why would I not put that mobey into a pc now? It would have better hardware and is probably be more future proof as well now!

This is the shittiest idea for home consoles ever. First they try to bleed people dry with their software and now we not only need to buy dlc for a complete game but also a new machine? Again, fuck that and anyone coming up with this shit.

Yes, I just want to vent. This pisses me off so much.

The part that pisses me off the most, is the fact it's so close to the original PS4.

If they did this about 4-5 years into PS4 cycle, I'd not mind as much. But first year was more or less a write-off, so PS4s are only like 1.5 years old. :/

Thanks to Sony I'm going PC now. If I'm gonna spend $400 every 1-3 years I might as well do it where it counts.
Learned my lesson not to buy consoles at launch the hard way. Usually I'd get one 2-3 years in.

You must be ignoring the PC Space where a 290X can easily run modern AAA games at 4K around 30 FPS. IF this is truly a 2X leap over PS4 with sacrifices and developer focused hardware coding- it can do 4K 30 FPS wit hease .

I don't want all the power being wasted on getting the same games running at 4k30. Especially when not many people have 4kTVs.

Spend the power on better quality at 1080p (30 or 60 I don't mind), and go for 4k next time around when more people have TVs that can benefit.

This might tempt me to buy an UHD TV next year though, if it has a UHD drive and 4k streaming services
