PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

It's always interesting to see people saying they will leave to PC gaming over this, when this happens, literally, every year in PC gaming. The older your hardware, the more sacrifices you have to make to get it to run.

Bingo. The fact most people defending this can't grasp this is the most likely outcome is appalling. They are just imagining all games will be at least 1080p 60fps. They are in for a rude awakening...

Speaking of "rude awakenings", it will be fun seeing Sony trying to sell this outside of the US. Oh boy...

Europeans would lap up a steaming turd if it had a PlayStation logo on it :p It'll be fine.

Given how my launch PS4 sounds like its about to take off, I'll take a look into it when its cheaper. Especially if it means future PS4 games running at 720p/20fps. Main reason I enjoy my PS4 a lot more than I did my PS3 is because of the stable performance. If that goes out the window, well I'd rather look elsewhere.

Best wishes.

It's the 31st. Early April fools.

Wouldn't be the first time. This is like the worst time to believe any news.

Except Patrick Klepek broke this story 2 weeks ago and it's been hinted at for some time before that. It's just a case of people wanting to believe this is a false story

I think this is great for the industry myself and yes, I own a PS4. At least we will not get a repeat of last gen with crappy hardware holding back the industry

Do other countries participate in April fools? I see people saying this is setup for April fools, so anyone not in America must do it differently. There is no setup prior to April fools. Period. That shit happens the day of.

Bitches endlessly about underpowered consoles

Threatens to quit console gaming when a huge power boost is offered.

NeoGAF.

  • You don't know they are the same people.
  • Even if they are the same people, it doesn't mean they have to accept the new business model.

For example, I did "bitch" perhaps in a couple of posts because the CPU's did not show a generational leap. Most other aspects matched or exceeded my expectations. And this PS4K won't display that generational leap over PS4 either, and it's way too soon.

With forwards + backwards compatibility, Sony's making sure devs will be able to utilize neither the PS4K, nor the PS4. Always something in between. It could be a different story with a proper length console cycle and a backwards compatible PS5, by that time, I'd be happy get that one, and wouldn't need my PS4 to half ass those games intended to run for the PS5, and would also be enjoying-super awesomely-tailored-to-PS4 games near the end of the cycle. Not so much, with the PS4K in the wild. The experience on PS4 will degrade after PS4K launch, over time.

As long as games still co.e out on both systems there is zero reasons for people to complain about this. Devs already make games for 2-5 consoles plus pc which is an infinite amount of configs. Why all the sudden will 1 more destroy their ability to make games over 20fps and 720p? Only time a game fully takes advantage of PS4 now is exclusives....and we all know those don't even exist.

Console generations are officially dead. I kinda liked the idea of an updated PS4, but a twice as powerful GPU, for which devs are optimizing their games? That's something else.

Wake me up when the PS4k is able to run Windows/Linux or whatever the hell else.

just like there is a policy that every PSVR game has to be 60fps, there will be likely a policy that every PS4K game has to work on PS4.

They will likely announce it when they announce PS4K so people can stop imaging crazy scenarios where developers will for no reason at all decide not to support PS4, and decide to bankrupt their company since they developed for 1m users instead of for 41m for extra 1% of development cost.

So there won't be any "PS4K exclusive", which would clearly mean that we have a kind of new gen that has its own games.

Like the NX it will be far less crazier than what people imagined in gaf riot threads.

I don't think you understand the implications of this iterative bussiness model. Now you will never get a big library for any machine. You will have cross gen games early on and when the next console iteration is released, then you'll get crappy ports of the PS5 games. But you'll never get those late gen highly optimized games you got with the PS3, PS2 or PS1.

yup.....welcome to the raw power era.....no longer will optimization late in a cycle happen. Instead a dev will hit a wall late in development and just say....fuck it develop for the next iteration its out in 6 months anyways.

This is going to suck

Imagine if there was a twist at E3. Sony decides to partner with Nvidia and all games new games will be exclusive to the GTX 4Kstation...

Okay man. If you want just to ignore all the points people have been making for pages, go right ahead. You're either being intentionally obtuse or disingenuous

Some people view this as a big deal, because they can both have longstanding consequences. Just because you don't agree with the severity, does not make them any less concerning for those that do.

The long term consequence of poor performance on legacy platforms will be something Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo have to address by putting down significant standards and insuring circles of quality. Right now you can't jump to any conclusion that suddenly your PS4 will start becoming a second class citizen or be a bastion of poor performance. Developer ambition, fidelity, and acceptable consumer standards are constant shifts - and if people feel this vocal about their platforms of choice, they should vocalize it.

In any case, Sony will have to address the elephany in the room and insure current PS4 owners that there machine isn't at risk of obscelence. Don't get me wrong for a second, I am not advocating a PS4k where the original PS4 suddenly becomes a 720/30 FPS box. However, I am not going to sit here and claim that PS4, with all its 900p Battlefront/Temporally Reprojected 1080p Uncharted 4/frame pacing aliased Bloodborne couldn't use a kick in the ass in terms of raw horsepower- ESPECIALLY in the CPU Department.

Oh fuck...then they are going to take the smartphone market as guide and release a new PlayStation every fucking year, with little incremental upgrades..I don't like this one bit!!
No, it is not that dramatic. Nobody is going to be releasing console hardware even biannually. But the "Q1 2017" date reads like the fever dream of somebody who thinks that console cycles have to last as long as they did last time, and we won't see a PS5 until 2020. Last cycle lasted forever because Microsoft lost a billiion dollars on red rings, Sony launched a system so expensive that it took three years to get to mainstream pricing, and the slowest economy recovery ever would have sunk new hardware coming out in 2011.

There is no reason a PS5 could not come out in 2018 or 2019. "Cross gen" software will be as much of a thing next time as it was this time. They could introduce a new system and keep selling PS4 to the bargain conscious consumers who just want a decent COD or FIFA experience. A fully integrated platform in '18/'19 makes more sense than fragmenting the market in early 2017. This isn't going to be like HDTV where every Walmart and Best Buy jumps on it seemingly overnight.

Or even worse, target for a lower common denominator instead of exploiting the current best model out there. Does nobody notice these generation leaps in visuals when new consoles come out and a new bar level is set?

What happens when Fallout 5 ships and is only really optimized for PS4K and runs like shit on PS4?

How is that different from PC? PC has to accommodate older and many more configurations.

Because usually the lowest common denominator are the consoles not older PC's.

I would bet good money that a lot of multiplat devs spend more time working on optimizing a single console SKU than all of the PC configurations. You can just hope that your PC audience brute force the games for the most part, you can't do that with consoles.

Seriously? Developers have been scaling graphics to varying performance tiers on PC (and console) for quite some time. Why is this so hard for people to understand that standard PS4 games will continue to run at the preferred resolution + applicable effects. PS4K games will get extra bells and whistles, higher frame rate etc.

popped in killzone shadowfall yesterday and the game still blows me away visually as a launch title. I still don't know how they did that not to mention have it floating at around 45 fps most of the time.....the leap was huge!

Considering I only bought a PS4 three months ago, by the time I'm willing to buy another console the PS5 will be on the market.
Or maybe the few console exclusive franchises I care about will finally come to PC so I can ditch consoles completely.

Goodness. This sounds like a massive step up doesn't it? ...can Uncharted look even better? Run at 60 FPS?

As long as PS4 1.0 is supported, I don't mind this. But I wonder if developers will bother optimizing for PS4 1.0, or even if the optimization for both will be balanced.

Can we please expect that? Will devs have to work a significant time to support two different PS4 versions?
I'm in as long as all games still run on OG PS4, I'd love me some more powah

apparently people think they will have to do a port for PS4K so I guess they thought that devs do a port for each graphic card and each cpu in the PC game.... no wonder PCs are so complicated, lol.

Consoles aren't modular though are they?
the key difference being when I want to upgrade my PC I don't have to buy an entirely new machine.
This is why PC is still the superior gaming platform imo. But, within the next decade I can completely see consoles moving to a PC-like hardware path, with the big names (Sony, Microsoft, and, ehh..... I guess Nintendo) just being manufacturers of essentially pre-built PCs with custom user interfaces. We're already halfway there with the Xbox One W10 integration and mid lifecycle hardware updates

I have no idea how your brain and logic works and I'm not even gonna try.
Your saying that Sony is violating their promise to consumers because the are improving the core function after 3 years, and apple isn't doing that because the core function of phones is to make calls and text and go on the Internet.

You explained that part of the promise is that developers will have a single platform to develop for to make the best game possible for the buyers system.

Regardless of most games being developed on pc with higher fidelity experiences already available, and having to already optimize for multiple platforms with the PS4K just being one more spec... Sony has more justification putting out a PS4.5 that takes advantage of the significant breakthrough in 14nm production (after 3 years no less) than the cell companies do to shut out a new phone every year with no material improvement to the core functions. There's a better and more compelling reason for a new forwards/backwards compatible PlayStation every 3 years than a new iPhone every year.

I agree there not that comparible, but we differ on who is more justified.

Because when you work on a console you don't just tick a "PS4" or "Xbox One" box.

If you want to have the game run well you spend your time optimizing it.

Developers don't spend as much time optimizing a game for the PS4 than someone who has a 970.

There's a reason why you get great looking games out of the hardware that the current consoles have.
