PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I hate these kind of posts. Not everyone think the same way you know.

I hate hypocritical people.
My console is 30fps, my PC can't do 60fps on most newer games. But I don't 'prefer' 30fps, I always want 60fps in my games.

So basically it's a new gen already.

Yeah, kinda. It's 2x more powerful afterall.
It's like going from 7870 (PS4 equivalent gpu) to the 980Ti or even better, somewhat.

It's like people are reacting as if they have to upgrade

*news flash*

No you don't

Sony would be stupid to leave 40 million people with obsolete consoles. come the fuck on now

This might force MS out of the console business if this PS4K is this powerful at $399 because I don't think MS is ready to make a big upgrade like this for the Xbox One when they haven't been selling so good this year.

$399 is just $50 more than the PS4 that's already selling well at $349 but MS is having a hard time at $299 I don't think they want to go back up in price right now.

My PS4 is barely 6 months old. The exact length of time between when I bought the 3DS and the New 3DS was announced.

It feels bad.

And that kind of proves the point. I do think there are devs who honestly want to make games at 60 FPS...but there's a lot of pressure to make your game as "pretty" as possible (many would argue that 30 more fps is prettier, but I digress...).

And this pressure pretty much always supersedes the FPS concerns. And that's partly why it's so note worthy when a dev actually does aim for AND hit their 60 FPS target. It becomes the exception rather than the rule.

Like DICE and Battlefront on consoles. I know it's not native res, but nonetheless impressive.

But it's also a false assumption to say it won't. Both speculation are incorrect as it is since we aren't in that time to see if there is a big difference. All we have is, more power. The PS4 had great tools for better optimization... I doubt all of a sudden those tools are extinct and the PS4 becomes a PS3 overnight.

Never in the history of game development has there been a 100% consistency in performance between platforms. Heck, there's even a couple instances where the Xbox One version is better than the PS4 version on a title. So I think with the high number of developers out there, with the hundreds of games developed each year, and all the examples where this has happend before, the odds are in favor of me being correct that some PS4 games will suffer because of the PS4K.

We have seen it everytime a new more powerful hardware iteration of a product arrives, software in the lesser hardware starts getting worse.

Stop that. Microsoft are focused on the Xbox brand and console, and shit, this incremental upgrade mid generation started with MS.

And where is your proof that nationwide the XB1 is doing bad at $299? Amazon is not a good answer.

Because this is the console market. There's a reason why console gamers are console gamers and not PC gamers. Yes, developing for multiple hardware configurations has existed for decades on PC but this is a first for the console market. People are going to have to deal with the hassle of, "Will my PS4 run this game?" and "Will I have to play it on crappy settings?" and "Oh, this is only a PS4K game?"

It would have been better if they had just done a full upgrade and called it a PS5 that's completely bc with PS4. Then it creates a clear line for consumers.

Everyone was waiting for the time when Sony screwed up a good thing, well here it is, if true.

You are being SOOO dramatic. If technology can progress, especially in the PC world that are customized configurations the same way consoles are (even if they are in a smaller form factor), it doesn't mean that all of a sudden all these 30 million consoles go to waste. Especially considering that the console has adopted the PC standard that allows them to stay on track. Hardware does age and it's normal for it to fall off quickly. Like... we are moving so fast that everything today is outdated by tomorrow. I'm not buying this system but I'm not pulling crazy theories out of my brain out of fear af being behind the curve. We already are and the console market cannot survive if it continues to be stationary in an industry where a new standard is released every year.

If only GOW4 on PS4K will settle for 1080p or at least 1440p and focus on making the game more "REAL". Sadly Sony will force SSM to do 4K to promote the console and the TVs.

Would you go out and buy a PS4 tomorrow knowing this PS4K is coming?

I guess I could have used the example of Televisions, or Laptops, or PC Video cards, or a whole slew of other consumer electronics. I used the Nexus 5/5x example because I'm currently thinking about upgrading.

Everything you just listed has a buissiness model that doesn't even remotely compare to consoles.

Do you even know the mark-up on those products?

Say hello to your $850 PS4K if we're going to those models.

as long as there are no BIG EXCLUSIVE games just for ps4, I am ok with that. Making GOW4 exclusive of this is STUPID, STUPID. They have 37 million ps4 in the wild, and you won't take advantage of that? GTFO

The problem most people have isn't the upgrade, its the developers that will not put as much effort into the PS4 version. That's a legitimate concern, tbh.

Although if being FULL BC here on out (PS5, 6, etc) with no bullshit makes the upgrade pill much easier to swallow.

No more so than buying any other piece of electronics, household good, etc.

I think a 3+ year refresh cycle is quite reasonable.

You cant really make that comparison. Console generations usually last 5-7 years. Its something that we come to expect when we buy our consoles. How can you say that shortening life cycles by nearly half is reasonable? Less life = less value for your purchase. And this isn't like phones where you join a program to upgrade for a small fee each year, you have to pay the full price each new gen (minus maybe 75-100$ for a trade in).

The part that makes absolutely zero sense to me is that current games will not gain performance boosts from being played on a system that's more powerful.

What, does the PS4k throttle its CPU and GPU?...

You'd have to show that these people would have never bought a PS4 to begin with though. Someone buying a PS4.5K instead of a PS4 because the option is available doesn't suddenly increase the user base at a higher rate than it would have if the PS4.5K didn't exist.
I'm not sure what you're asking me to show you.

I'm not sure what you're asking me to show you. There will be people that buy a PS4K as their first PS system, specifically because they like the power of it, or they just bought a 4K tv, or they want to upgrade from their xbox or mid-range PC and PS4 doesn't quite cut it for them. There are people in this thread who say they are glad they waited and will get the PS4K.

Every one of these people and every one of the people who sell or give away their PS4 to upgrade are additive to the install base and justify a reallocation of optimization resources.

Ok, here's my problem; older games don't scale to the new hardware, without the developer getting involved.

I have to admit, I'm concerned about my ability to play God of War 4. I'm sure they're going to push the shit out of the new hardware with this game.

Looking forward to the eventual DF articles.

Games will still run on PS4, but developers will spend more time in the newer hardware as time passes, so you will get a crappy PS4 port if you want to play the game there. They still like money.

I guess the games are hard-coded to run a specific way. They were made before scaling to hardware became a thing for consoles.

..and thats the problem. Many still do not have adequate pc hardware, so PSVR with PS4K remains the cheapest

The OP makes it clear that the PS4K will be the new target spec, so no, do not expect the PS4 games to run as well as they ever did.

If they are the exact same architecture with just improvements on GPU/CPU it would be something we have never seen in the console space before. So I don't think it's safe to assume anything at this point. But in that case I would lean more toward same performance, but I also don't think all devs are lazy either.

Man. Exciting stuff happening this year. I'm really interested in seeing whether VR and incremental upgrades take off. Frankly, I have no clue whatsoever.

I don't know if I would jump on this. It would depend on the boost that comes with it and how much I could sell my PS4 for. I'm putting a fairly decent amount of money into a gaming PC throughout this year (~$1000 depending on how much I spend on a video card). I also plan on probably buying an NX this year (whatever the hell it is lol). If the PC version of most of these games is comparable I would have a hard time paying to play a higher res'ed PS4 exclusive or two.

Part of the problem with doing a system transfer is that I would want to transfer my system files first and I don't see Best Buy or Gamestop having a way for us to do it in store. That could be a problem for a lot of gamers.

MS will def be gun shy at making a costly model because they don't have the brand strength. I still think Sony is doing this because MS is though to cut them off at the knees.

MS don't really have a choice but to do this cuz they don't have VR (yet, probably yes after they announce), and as long as it's not sold at a loss there's not much downside to the strategy I guess.

If MS stays the course and only releases a slim then yeah they are done I think, and will focus on PC.

The same happens with the N3DS, optimizing a game isn't free, unless you planned for it to happen from the start. There is a homebrew app for the N3DS (HANS) where you can bruteforce the N power for the old games, and some just won't work at all.

It was $299 in Jan & Feb & it didn't do to good & that's in the US , World Wide is even worse.

Come on. Every dev will make their games for the upgraded console. PS4 games going forward will be downports. Might as well call it PS5.

If Microsoft doesn't do this...straight up, they will salvage the reputation they lost with the Xbone DRM shit. You can't split your userbase in two. This is a new console. Straight up.

They have been making games for PS4 and PS3 for quite a while now, it is not a big deal. (And Xbox One - Xbox 360 for that matter)
Making games for PS4+ and PS4 will actually be far easier than that due to not dealing with the cel in the PS3.
People always jump for melodramatics and lose their heads and run for the keyboards without thinking about shit even for a moment.

If I want exclusives that aren't gimped versions, then yes, I will. Exclusives are 50% of the reason I get a console, and I would imagine all exclusives will target the upgraded specs. And I would argue Sony stupid doing this, but different strokes I suppose.

I guess not buying a PS4 has paid off for me.

Actually I don't even know if it's worth buying a PS4K, since there will probably be another new system coming out in late 2018. I'll be interested to hear what Sony has to say about future iterations on the system.

How technically minded were the people in the OP's meeting?

Could the 2X refer to core or CU counts rather than directly to performance?
