Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

The game is clearly far, far better than this demo indicates (Duscae players know this)... but man, I don't blame newbies for taking away the message that FFXV is in trouble.

It's been established by data that the average demo might actually lessen interest in a main game. Well this demo, especially so.

I honestly think if you could turn back the clock 12 hours and cancel this demo, you'd increase sales potential :P

So the Type-0 demo was better than this crap? Would it be worth it to see if there's any goof out there with a sealed Day 1 type-0 so I can try that demo?

Cause my god this killed any sort of interest I had. It's rare that a demo completely sours me on a game I'm looking forward too. At present I'll probably bargain bin it just to put it with my other FF games in my collection.

There is so much tomfoolery in this demo its hard to think Nomura isnt involved.

Really cute demo but it left me wondering...

If they can transform you with the flick of a switch into an aligator or a giraffe, why can't they let you play as other patry members?

I am not gonna stop being salty about this ever...

First of all...

Why the fuck did they flip the controls?
X used to be warping, now it's /\. [] used to be attack and O used to be dodge, now it's other way around. It's like they took the control layout and rotated it 180 degrees for no reason. After hours and hours of playing Duscae this is fucking me up.

Also, combat actually feels worse. Duscae was sticky and dull on the surface, but as you learned it, it became more flexible. Now, I dunno, I feel like half the stuff is not there anymore. I didn't notice any changes based on direction I am holding, for example, unlike Duscae, where tilting the stick during attack stings lead to different kinds of attacks, letting you adjust to surrounding situation on the fly.

Also, it's nice that they finally pointed out that you can do finisher attack without waiting for enemy's health to get low by making a brief pause in your string... but a massive "Hey asshole! Press O" on the screen is not the most elegant solution.

Ultimately, this demo is a little bit pretentious, in a sense that it tries to be his story piece way more than it tries to be a slice of what the game is...
Also, I'd love to see reaction of somebody who knows nothing of this:
" Hm, what is this? White creature, little child, whimsical adventures, what is this, some sort of pre-emptive last guardian rip off?"

It does a poor job presenting what the final product will be like...

Oh and is it me or did it not run great at all?

I thought the demo was interesting tech-demo, but that weren't much else going on with it. I like the combat somewhat more than in Duscae, weapon-changing made it feel more fluid, even though it was very clear that the implementation was an afterthought. Framerate was pretty unstable (Walking in water in the citadel area somehow completely tanked the framerate for me). I liked the area that made me think about the Wonderland in KH.

Great idea for a demo. It shows us the visual quality, frame rate, weather system, magic, cars, and combat all in one neat little demo. Love it so far. I'm at the Alice in wonderland part. Reminds so much of Kingdom Hearts that I can't disassociate it lol

It was 1000x better. Not to say it was a perfect demo but it had a large open area with many goals, interesting design, and combat that was thrilling and dynamic. You see why it is the way it is in that demo.

But this demo was "wtf why?" after playing the other demo. Just puzzling why they would show this... because I know XV has so much going for it, but they show this thin and unappealing side to the combat. It's like a Final Fantasy VII demo where you can only hit "fight" over and over.

You'll have to take my word for it, but I think it's wrong to let this demo move the needle on your interest in the real XV. Not that Square deserves the benefit of your doubt after releasing this.

You can't redeem the duscae demo anymore.

It does that alright...

Also, what is with these japanese devs thinking holding down a button for combat is fun, like at all? In how many games do we have this?

You can stll press button, not just hold. But since duscae, I prefer to hold. Pressing is not comfortable due to the way animations work. Plus, the combat isn't about individual button presses, it's about learning to flow from one thing to another as such holding then letting go then pressing or holding something else is what you do. Mashing a combo in itself is meaningless.

Haven't gotten far in it yet. Does the frame rate get bad?

I think the opening area was the worst. What was that.... 20fps at best?

One of the lowest fps games I've played on my PS4. Maybe the lowest.

Hope to god the final is more optimized.

So ill ask again...of you can transform so easily into an aligator or a giraffe why cant they put this to good use and...make u play as PARTY MEMBERS ?!!!!!

Really? I got to the "Alice in Wonderland" like room and I didn't notice the bad frame rate. I mean it was definitely better than Duscaue or however you spell it. Then again, it was 1 in the morning and I only played for 20 minutes maybe less

wtf is this garbage?

Horrible performance, clunky controls not smooth at all and the combat? dear lord, so bad :')

this game at this point needs to have great story because unlike KH it doesn't have a great/fun gameplay to back it up.

I didn't even think about this XD

I feel like with those clunky and barley responsive controls I would rather just play as Prompto and just shoot from distance.

UPDATE on glitching out of the map:

Got pushed through the floor by the big guy in the center of the map.

Couldn't really decipher if there was water or endless void below me because as soon as it happened, the game stopped, flashed a black box warning about returning me to the play area, then immediately returned me to the play area via fading to black transition. No loading screen, happens instantly. Capture didn't save on PS4 for some reason (wtf?).

Seems the era of glitchy exploration is at an end, my friends.

If it were water, wouldn't that be unnecessary rendering impacting performance?

I don't think it was better than Duscae at all. I think it was worse.

At least with my subjective experience the framerate in Duscae was "good enough, I don't notice it" and the framerate in Platinum Demo was "this is so bad it's ruining any possible appreciation of the graphics".

But perhaps I have gotten more sensitive to framerate in the ~1 year since I played Duscae. I'll wait for others to confirm what I'm saying.

Well, downloading the game now. I won't fall in the trap prepared by SE, so I'll wait for the PC version or, it that doesn't come, I'll take the game for 30€ or so. If it's something like FFXIII games and Type 0, stores will be full of unsold copies and SE discounts deeply its game after three or four months anyway.

For now, I want to see what this demo is, played Duscae from a friend and it was good nor bad, it was an "I'm interested in it but there are so many wrong things, let's see what SE will deliver".

Granted, Iron Giant is not the best testing ground, but I feel like SE made a terrible mistake rewamping combat due to whiners.

The problem with Duscae wasn't the actual combat, it was how it was conveyed. It made it seem like it was just hold the button, noctis will keep hitting, then will do a finishing strike when they are about to die automatically. Also sometimes dodge and counter I guess"

That was NOT what the combat was. It completely failed to mention how tilting different directions during combos lead to different atacks, serving different purpose, from repositioning yourself, to covering more ground to pursuing escaping enemies. It never mentioned all the maneuvers you can do to make specific parts of your "starter - ravager - finisher" combo string come out at any point you want them, completely separated from the above mentioned string. And devs kept saying all the wrong things, that dissuaded people from exploring the possibilities of that combat system even further... New one just seems like clunkier and less cohesive version of the combat everybody thought Duscae had, instead of the one it actually had.

I've never played Duscae, and not touched FF since 13-2, so was looking forward to trying this out.

...It leaves me worried. That a game I have been anticipating for 10 years (I remember buying 12 around when this was announced) both looks and plays worse than previous media led me to believe. Aside from the internal tech-demo feeling elements of this, it's really stilted (I thought they would take more cues from companies that have done this gameplay style well, such as Platinum). The story and accompanying CGI movie are the only things keeping me motivated at this point.

Also, the fluctuating frame rate started to make me feel ill after 20 minutes.

The fact that they prompt you at the end if you want to purchase the game is like really weird.
I mean they have to know this is probably a really poor representation of the final product right?

As a Type-0 owner.... I'd feel just fine if Square Enix released Episode Duscae for free on PSN as damage control.

I remember they later released FFVII and VIII demos (previously bought with Square titles) on Playstation magazine discs....

That was hilarious actually.

This game kind of feels like shit to play. Never had to dodge at all in any of the normal fights, just held circle and watched the game play itself, and then come the bossfight it just felt like a sloppy mess. The game tells you to hold Square to auto-dodge, but not all attacks can be dodged, so... I don't know what you're supposed to do, just eat certain attacks? You can see some of the dudes undodgeable attacks coming, like the stomp or the big overhead swing, but it doesn't feel like there's a good way to dodge them beyond just running away.

That warping mechanic will at least move you a long distance quickly, but it's terribly unresponsive and I never really know where I'm going to end up. This particular mix of traditional character action with these baby's-first-videogame controls is just bad.

The game can look pretty nice in certain areas, but pretty rotten in others, too. And the framerate never feels stable; you can see it drop every time you touch the right stick. This demo's kind of put me off wanting to play the full game.

Well you've given me some hope but I'm still sour as all hell about this. Maybe come E3 and they do that "preorder 3, save $20 each" thing like usual I'll change my mind.

Here's hoping they do damage control and release THAT demo later on or something.

You can't redeem the duscae demo anymore.

Well that's disappointing. Thanks for the heads up, SE apparently sells day 1 editions.

Well you've given me some hope but I'm still sour as all hell about this.

I don't blame you at all.

Just keep your ears open when the game releases and we'll see how the final game turns out.

Yeah it was, I cracked up a little.
I agree they should put up Duscae for free at this point. At least give people that have not tried that a better idea. If anything, the cave area with all those goblins and those crazy automatons that come down from airships are fucking cool as hell, especially when they go all suicide-bomber on you. Things can get pretty damn chaotic in that demo.

I enjoyed the demo but I wish there was more combat with adult Noctis at the end rather than fighting a higher leveled version of the same boss. I never played Duscae so I have no frame of reference for how the controls used to be but I thought that it controlled fine. I tried the boss a third time and by then I was able to dodge easily and make more use of the warping powers.

I was surprised that they didn't have a trailer at the end of the demo, even if it was just one that they showed today.

People are complaining about the hair ?

This is by far some of the best hair in any game I've seen.Sure there is some aliasing and dithering but this game actually renders strands that move quite flexibly.

The only thing that comes close is hair works in the TW3 or lara's hair.

I didn't even think about this XD

The systems seems to allow for character switching pretty easily...I see nothing standing in the way of that other than an arbitrary design choice.

I haven't played this yet. It's worse than the Duscae demo? (which I enjoyed)

Yes.

And it's not that the core game has gotten worse.. I don't think.

It's that they've chosen to showcase a series of bizarre non-sequitur vignettes with even lower level combat than in Duscae.

Played both XBO and PS4 versions and the XBO feels like lagging the controls and the framerate of the final fight is quite bad in comparison with the ps4 verison...

Wanna see a proper comparison but that's how it felt to me.

Kinda this could have been a Kingdom Hearts re-skinned demo tbh

It's really tech-demo-y and really poorly structured if you haven't played Duscae, since combat suddenly goes from holding attack button to a tough enemy and then it ends. If you're already used to the quirks of the battle system it's not bad, but it's pretty baffling they'd go public with a demo like this.

Agree don't know why don't go duscae instead of this KH kinda demo

Tried the demo for a bit. Is this final game seriously going to be this low res? The game looks like a blurry mess and not even as good looking as XCX... I may end up cancelling my preorder on this one.

It really doesn't even look HD at all..

Never played Duscae, just tried the Demo and...

Definitely a no day 1 buy at the very least. I can see this may just be a very misrepresentative demo but it just felt....flat

No incentive to play in this world. It wasn't awful. Just a...'is this it' fundamental feeling.

just beat it, had a KH feel to it

i need to mess around with the boss fight at the end, i can feel this game combat back i need to learn it

i still wish hold to attack was gone still

Demo is great, the game really looks pretty good, maybe the combat is the biggest flaw because it won't like the purerpg neither the actionrpgs fans.

I feel like they thought they were just putting out some goofy bonus.

Nope. It's the only freely available demo. This is how people make purchasing decisions....
