Played Mage Knight for the first time Friday with some buddies. It's a fun game but its pretty long too. Overall I enjoyed it. I wanted to purchase it so I could play it solo but its pretty pricey
Anyway, what are some similar style games that can be played single or multiplayer? Bonus points if it's a SciFi game

Dead of Winter? It looks complex, but is actually very simple and not-bogged-down once you guys are accustomed to the rules. And if you guys want a deception/secrecy/betrayal then play with the betrayal variant.

I'd say Avalon/Resistance is good with 5+ people. Anything below that and it may get boring and just not be very entertaining. Betrayal is great though, it really doesn't matter if it's 3 or 4 people it's sooo much fun. We always play it at least twice because of how much we enjoy it. Mileage may vary, but I recommend it 100%.

These don't have the "traitor in your midst" thing with the direct lying like Resistance has, but for something where one person gets to be very sneaky you could check out Letters from Whitechapel or Fury of Dracula. Those are both one vs many hidden movement game where one player is secretly moving around a map and the other players have to try and track down the trail and find them. The Pandemic expansion On the Brink adds a similar mode to that game.
Shadows Over Camelot is great with 4 or 5 (goes up to 7). I dont' know if I'd call Betrayal a "deception" game.
Another neat deception/action game is Life Boat, because you have a more interesting player dynamic going on (everybody Loves another player, and Hates another player).

I played it a few times at Gencon last year but haven't gotten it back to the table yet. Also note that I've never played BSG.
Basically, I liked it a lot. The dice as resources mechanic was as interesting way to play, never knowing for sure if your mission was sabotaged, or just had really bad luck. The unique identities were fun, and seemed balance. No player elimination is good. Even the traitor, if they get outed, can continue to take actions to sabotage the game. Nobody becoming traitors midway was also good, since you don't have to hedge your bets all game just in case you're secretly cylon.
I know that our first game was slow as we learned the rules, but setup was still pretty quick, and each game was taking maybe 60-90 minutes after the first one. We played with the same group repeatedly.

Dark Moon packs a lot of fun in a short playtime, and does a lot of great things with the traitor mechanic. The aforementioned bad luck/sabotage mechanic with the dice is great, and the unique Tasks really just reinforce suspicion among everyone until it reaches a boiling point. I think it can be tough to know when to reveal as traitor, but you can learn pretty fast when the games go so quick.
If you like BSG you'll like this. I played a ton of BSG with Evan, and it clearly was the inspiration for this.

Check eBay for used copy. I picked mine up from eBay for $38.00 and it was practically brand new. I haven't played Race for the Galaxy in forever, but I finally ordered the first expansion. I might get 1 or 2 more in the distant future.
Other titles I'm planning to get this year are Scythe (once the Kickstarter ships) and Robinson Crusoe (once the new version comes out).

So total personal preference here but I'd stop at the first expansion. It's amazing and really makes RFTG a complete game. Others are unnecessary imo unless you play RFTG and wish it was more complex for no real reason. RFTG+TGS though? One of my top 20 games ever probably, though I haven't played it in years since I played hundreds of games back when I first got them.

I still need to play the new sets of expansions. I already own alien for like a year and haven't played it >.< I wonder how the other new one is.
to be fair most of the cards work just fine without the mechanics, it's really just a few really odd cards and the fighting mechanic that were icky. (to be fair I don't like attacking other people in most games so yeah)
I've played RFTG hundreds of times & it's still a regular play at work. I stopped at the first expansion too, though I've played the later ones. The first one 'rounds out' the base game nicely, offering a good set of cards for most directions of play, without bloating the deck too much - it's a regular occurrence for our group to go through the deck in a game.
The later expansions add some really fun cards, and the takeover system can be completely ignored (which I like to do too) & was designed to be optional. I really didn't like 'prestige' in the last original expansion; the game didn't need a second currency. Adding in those expansions give you a ton of new cards & ideas, but make the deck ridiculously huge, making it physically harder to play as well as making card synergy in your random draws much more unlikely.
Stick to the first expansion for a while.
Prestige I want to enjoy in theory, but in execution it is horrid. Way to often someone is lucky enough to get out a card that gets them it early and no one else can stop it until it's to late for them to run away with the game >.<:
if i recall right there are also bonus point conditions added... it's been a long time since I have played race with the expansions as I don't own any of the original expansions, I used to play a friends and instead am getting the newer expansions.
For RFTG, I have two different sets; one with the first two expansions, and one with the latest one (Xeno Invasion). I actually really like Xeno Invasion, the invasion subgame adds a lot of different ways to win. You can go full on military, or a modified produce/consume engine to pump up war effort contributions.
If there is a con, I would say that like with the prestige, you need to have expansions cards to maximize victory chances. The rule change where you can meld hands before discarding from explore actions handles this more elegantly than prestige search.

I still like Race for the Galaxy best with the base game and the first expansion (The Gathering Storm). TGS doesn't add much in the way of rules or cards (there's only like 20?), but the cards do round out the game's strategy space and the goals (e.g., 3 VP for first to have worlds of all four colors, 5 VP for largest military at end of game) are great.
The rest of the first arc adds additional rules (PvP combat, Prestige tokens) that make the game more difficult to manage and more swingy. Unless you really need more variety than TGS provides, I don't think these are worthwhile additions.
The second arc consists of a single expansion, Alien Artifacts, which has a good, balanced card selection (larger than TGS) but has a dull sequential Orb exploration mini-game added on in the place of goals. AA is fine for what it is without the Orb game, but the lack of goals is unfortunate (and the RftG on the whole is not designed to allow mixing-and-matching between arcs).
The third arc also consists of a single expansion, Xeno Invasion, which also has a reasonable card selection (again, larger than TGS) with focuses on stronger military and faster consumption. The new Invasion mini-game requires fending off attacking NPCs every round, which adds a lot of pressure and greatly changes the feel of RftG. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about XI, but it's definitely different with the Invasion option, and without the Invasion option it doesn't feel as interesting as TGS. It is pretty good. Definitely stick to odd numbers of players, at least till you get 5 or more, it will help the traitor faction out quite a bit. I've also found that things may feel pretty mellow till the last round and then shit can hit the fan real fast. It doesn't have that constant "we're fucked" feel BSG can have. But it plays quick and once you master the dice it can be a lot of fun.
I actually got Alient Artifacts instead of TGS because it had alot more cards. The solo play and goals didnt really interest me and the AA orb didnt either. If you only want more cards that balance the base game and add some flavour I would actually go straight for AA.
Tried dead of winter and I think you need a really good group...I'm skeptical of my friend group, haha!!
We went a bit crazy and ended up also ordering Puerto Rico, anomia, and Carcassonne. Excited to try them out! But I think we're done for now in terms of collection for a bit, need to do some playing

It's similar to Munchkin, but set in a space station I think. The big difference it's all co-operation, unlike Munchkin. You draw encounter cards similarly and move through the space station as a group and fight monsters and solve encounters together. However, you can get separated (which is represented by drawing encounters from a separate "path" deck). I also remember that you pick your character class from the get go.
I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the game, but I remember it being fun. Anybody have an idea?

Backed snowblind on kickstarter. Looks like a pretty fun mix of racing, push your luck, pick up and delivery, dice rolls and mitigation and worker placement.

Picked mine up a few hours ago. On the one hand, I was shocked to see it in Australian stores in time for the release date -- normally we'd have to wait a few weeks. On the other hand, the price was through the roof! Much higher than normal Australian prices, which are already twice as much as what you'd pay in the States.

Descent would be good if you want something similar to Mice and Mystics. There will be app coming out soon that allow for full co-op mode.

Ah thanks ! This may be the tipping point in getting my SO to hop on board.
Just be aware that Blood Rage is much more about card drafting (e.g., 7 Wonders) than anything else; yes, there are minis on a map and combat, but scoring is decided by the card drafting between combat/placement rounds.
I can't suggest any dungeon crawlers, as I've never found one I really liked (I tolerate the D&D ones -- Castle Ravenloft, Tomb of Elemental Evil, etc.).
As for other suggestions, given your current library I'd suggest One Night Ultimate Werewolf or The Resistance: Avalon (social deduction games kind of in the same vein as Saboteur, but much faster paced and more intense), Lords of Waterdeep (similar to Stone Age, but with a D&D theme and more interaction), and maybe Terra Mystica (if you want to get into heavier, more complex strategy games). Small World might also be up your alley if you want a fast Risk-like area control/combat game with a fantasy theme and minimal dice rolling.

Looks kinda like Smash Up but using a queuing mechanic similar to something like Guillotine.
Guillotine and Smash Up have been go to warm up games for my group for ages now, so it was kinda a no brainer for me.
Never played Colosseum before, might back this though. The new components look lovely.

Is the biggest difference just the targeting thing? I've always just house-ruled it to "if you hit, you hit but if you miss you hit your teammate."
Everyone keeps saying how it is better but have yet to say how since it looks pretty identical.
The plastic playmat things for each character are much better for keeping track of stuff, the targeting rule is fixed and I like the theme more. I don't really know why but it does seem different enough that I like this version more. That said I hope next time they put out a modern day stand alone they put the new targeting rule in. Not sure but I would expect that ranged would become unbalanced if you used that rule in the old game, though I don't know. Also armor and shields make some characters have saving throws for wounds which makes it so you can take some risks with them. Not sure if that was in the later modern day stuff though. Also enchantment spells are pretty cool. Game just feels like a good revision.
Edit: Also don't underestimate that it is a jumping in point for what is a pretty expensive game system that has been going on for a while. If I owned the original stuff I would have a hard time justifying getting this one, but as I don't and like the theme better this works for me too.
