New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

There's also a fun Batman version if anyone in the group likes Batman.
I find Batman to be the best version of Love Letter.

I played couple of new (to me) at local Meet-up Euro Day. Stone Age with expansion, I really like it, a nice step up from Lord of Waterdeep and Lastwill, I just couldn't get my head around this one. It was interesting and would play again.

Hello!

A friend of mine has opened a kickstarter for his game Dirty Cops: A Game for Scoundrels. Sean is a veteran producer in the game industry, and has put this experience towards getting his first analog title published.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dirtycops/dirty-cops-a-game-for-scoundrels

Sean is deeply involved in the gaming community, and through his partnership with Playtest Northwest, he has put Dirty Cops through hundreds of hours of playtesting in order to craft a fun, polished experience.

If you want to check it out and help support independent game development that would be great! Thanks!

Eeesh. This month's campus magazine contains a sobering reminder that this hobby is still niche as hell. One of the vox pop questions was "favourite board game?". 4 Monopoly, 1 person who doesn't play games and 1 person who likes Mouse Trap and wonders if it's even sold anymore.

Codenames requires/shines with at least six players.
6 and 4 are the best in that order in my experience. You really want six to get that horrible open discussion infront of the spymasters.

A fully Coop Descent using app to control the Overlord, finally. The app is limit to new campaign, first one is free then you buy new campaign as Dec. What interesting is that the app will use all the expansion if you have them and the map will be reveal as you progress.

I am hoping in the future they can use the app to work with the current physical quest but I think they want to keep the two separate. A fully co-op Descent and one with human overlord.

Even on this hardcore gamer forum, a lot of people have a rather narrow view of board and card games.

that's nifty, but I don't think I am gonna go into the decent madness when I have a bunch of money in super dungeon explore already.
It's pretty sad that we in Off topic on a gaming forum.

it's not a gaming forum, it's a video game forum, and it makes complete sense board games are off topic for video games :p

I do wish I knew more people who played board games though, my collection isn't being played enough.

I recently join Meet-up and met a lot of people who play boardgames you can to give that a try.

That Descent app looks pretty cool. I guess I will finally be able to play Descent! Well, I'll be able to play 2E Descent. I think my first edition copy will probably sit here unplayed forever now. But I can finally get one of the versions on the table, so that is something!

My wife and I really want to play Pandemic Legacy or is it just called Pandemic, but which version should I get? Does it matter?

Pandemic legacy is the story driven version where you only play it through once. Pandemic is the original, it's more abstract with no narrative bus you can always play it.

Crossposting from the Bloodborne card game thread, since it's probably more relevant to this topic.

Poked around and found a stream of a recent tabletop gaming expo. The designer gave the following info about the game:

-3-5 player PvE competitive game
-Based off chalice dungeons, “dungeon crawl card game”
-Players start with basic weapon cards
-Improve cards/hand throughout game through shopping (this may happen when players die)
-Players act as hunters
-Monsters appear and engage the players
-Blood obtained from monsters serves as victory points for players
-Monsters attack every player simultaneously
-Dying causes players to lose the blood they have
-Players can opt out of a single combat to bank blood
-However, opting out of combat is a “push your luck” mechanic, as the enemy will survive longer and damage players more over the long run
-Groupthink element despite competitive nature - players may want to deliberately cooperate in certain ways when engaging the monster
-Killing monsters earns players trophies - more trophies earned as more of the same type of monster is killed
-Basic starting cards includes Saw Cleaver and Hunter Pistol
-Hunter cards deal damage and produce effects
-Players simultaneously choose cards to play; collective turn for all players
-Cards executed in player order once they've all been played
-Damaging monsters earns blood
-Monsters have set amount of blood; if no blood remains when you strike, you earn no blood for the combat
-Monsters run away when no damage is taken, thus encouraging players to opt-in to combat and take it down for trophies.
-Only players that damage the monster will get a trophy for killing it
-Monster attacks based on die rolls; emphasizes risk analysis for combat
-Dice can either produce zero damage, or “explode” for infinite rolls if players are very unlucky
-Monster attacks all players simultaneously
-Overall, game is designed to simulate the stiff challenge, dread, and risk/reward nature of Bloodborne's combat, while adding a psychological element as it concerns the cooperation (or lack thereof) among the hunters
-Should release in 2016

The minimum of three players is a bit of a bummer, but the mechanics sound nice and pretty thematic.

Codenames requires/shines with at least six players. Kingdoms, Truro, and Carcassonne are tile-laying fillers that play well worth four. There are numerous classic card games (Bridge, Eucre, etc.) that also work great, as does Tichu or Slide 5/6 Nimt! or Money! or No Thanks! or For Sale or Hanabi.

We play codenames consistently with three - two competing spymasters and one guesser who does their best to think out loud and it works great.

With four, I think I prefer one guessing team of 2 that collaborates to guess for each spymaster. Everyone is engaged the whole time that way.

All of my Pitchcar stuff arrived today (everything but Long Straights, which will ship when Potion Explosion releases). Now to go and place all the boxes on the bottom of a stack of games so it looks like I have owned them all along, lol.

I also received the newest Smash Up expansions but it can't be played yet. All 1000+lbs of my Greenland mail is sitting at the post office with Smash Up and all expansions sitting in one of the boxes or trunks, but I do not have a truck available to me at the moment to go and start picking it up. I suppose I could play just the contents of the expansion box, 2 decks against 2, but I need to teach my wife how to play the game.

Then I turned around and placed another order with the Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Game, Pitchcar Long Straights, and the thing I want most that comes out in just over two months: Potion Explosion.
I know someone else ITT was wanting Potion Explosion and had been checking for preorders; apparently they have been live on CSI for a few days now. It is a bit more than I expected (for some reason, not sure why I expected a lower price) but the components seem top-notch so I said "Sure" to it. Can't wait to play it...

Ghghgh! :)

Sorry, makes me a weird effect seeing Potion Explosion loved here on NeoGaf. :)

Thanks.

No problem. The game looks like a huge amount of fun and I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on it and play it with my wife and daughter. I hope it continues being a hit for you.

I hope that too, right now it is going very well.

Working hard on the first expansion. :)

I saw mention of it on BGG, when asked about expansions it was said that one was being worked on. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what it could contain; obviously there will be new potion combos but are we gonna be looking at a new color? Perhaps a wild-card color that will have limited quantity and acts as any color when it drops? New powers that activate upon achieving combos that affect the board or affect your opponent's turns? I'm sure it will be cool stuff.
(I'm not fishing for hints or anything, just thinking of possibilities...)

I've just gotten back into the hobby after a long absence. Reading about the Ghostbusters kickstarter in this thread pulled me back in. After backing that, I've bought a lot of games recently. Arcadia Quest, Zombicide, Rum and Bones, Twilight Imperium, Takenoko, King of Tokyo, some card and others.....

I enjoy the enthusiasm and love of games in here. Keep up the recommendations!

I got back to looking into KD:M. Currently, you can purchase EVERYTHING for $1185. :| Ouch.
Yep. Every now and then I start looking into it, think 'that looks incredible,' then I remember how much it costs and think 'nope. I throw money around on board games like there is no tomorrow but I can't even...'
I know that I don't HAVE to get everything, but even if I didn't have a compulsion to get every expansion, promo, and otherwise additional item for games, why would I not want to make sure I got everything for KD:M before it vanished into the ether and starts selling for 10x the price in the future? Limit myself to buying just the base game, love it, and not able to get anything additional for it in the future because I'm not willing to take out a mortgage or sign up for a season on a tuna boat? I would be kicking myself so hard for not buying it all when I had the chance.

So as it is now, I'll just steer clear of it. If I had gotten into the hobby in time to see the Kickstarter I would have backed it in a heartbeat but I was quite LTTP.

I would even settle for just getting my hands on the cheesecake/pinup minis, because I love pinup art styles, but a lot of those seem like I would never be able to obtain them, so nope.

Hi. Does anyone here play board games on Tabletop Sim?
I tried it a few times because my in-law lives far away but I can't say I enjoyed it. I am drawn to tabletop game because I craved the physical nature. While using Skype is OK on occasion, it's never quite the same as being at the same table. This is one of the reason I don't mind fiddly games because I do enjoyed setting up and physically moving chits and little miniatures.

I'm so glad I have a friend who pledges the whole thing. Apparently he got his expansions and it basically triples the size of the original game which was already like a 20 pound box >.<;

I'll get to see it all on sat.

Do give more info. I already got large KS on the way so I won't have space for this but I am curious about it.

Just opened Golem Arcana, outside of building a starting army, it was pretty sweet that it can just be put on the table and played super easily. Hope I can get others into it.

LotR LCG and Hostage Negotiator finally arrived. Later on in the year I should be picking up Cuba Libre and Labyrinth, which will cap off a 12 month swim in contemporary board games. Phew!

Hi. Does anyone here play board games on Tabletop Sim?

I'm getting good solo-play mileage out of TS lately learning the various FFG Lovecraft games and expansions. Most recently going through Arkham Horror and trying out various combinations. I think tomorrow even I plan on giving Innsmouth + Yellow a shot. Might even let Youtube archive it if I'm feeling kooky.

Is the game any good? I read the rules and they seemed way to ornate and kind of dull too but never got to play. Minis are insanely amazing though.

It is. It's very unique, and the narrative structure between boss fights is pretty cool. It's basically Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game. You build a settlement full of characters and crafters to augment your population, you get random events, you hunt nasty beasts, and it's got a cool gear grid system for synergizing armor sets/weapons. All of this dressed with macabre dark fantasy/horror.

That's sweet, love Darkest Dungeon though I'd never be able to get DD:TBG to the table tbh. :p Have to stick to Claustrophobia for my dungeon crawling I guess.

Can Golem Arcana be play without using the app?

Good lord, Dead of Winter gets stressful by the end. We were literally one turn away from winning, when we get blindsided by a crossroads card. Both options led to the loss of our last morale, either directly or indirectly.

Anyone here played the Explorers & Pirates expansion to Catan? My friends and I have been having a blast with it recently. I initially thought Seafarers was better but nah this blows it out the water (pun intended).

The three types of bonus missions (pirate lairs, fish, and spices) running through the game really amp up the strategy.

I'm hoping next to combine it with Cities & Knights where harbour towns act as double resources and need to be protected just like cities. Will be a crazy long game though!

Whoohoo! It took two trips with a truck and SUV but I just transported all of my stuff that was shipped home from the post office to my garage. All of my board games, card games, and miniatures are safe at home with me now. I bought some tubs of DampRid to put in there and draw some moisture out of the air to hopefully keep them damage-free. Now I just need to start going out in the afternoons and sorting through stuff, figure out what has a reasonable chance of getting played soon, and taking other tubs of games down to store with the rest.
Soon I'll be looking for work and, if everything goes right, moving across the country. I cannot wait to be out of a tiny apartment and be in a house, where the walls are lined with Kallax book shelves overflowing with games.

Broke out Eldritch Horror tonight. We squared off against Yog Sothoth.

We drew the prelude that spawns an extra tough Dunwich Horror and a buddy with a blunderbuss wrecked it, blasting 7 of its 8 health in turn one. The feeling was short lived though as once it went down we drew the mystery where we had to solve Yog's specific research cards. If you aren't familiar with his research deck its full of cards that insta-devour you if you fail the test. A nasty mythos that killed 3/4ths of us set us back enough where we couldn't catch up. Yog awoke and quickly conquered this mortal realm.

I still dig the shit out of this game. Its punishing as hell but the stories it tells...you can't help but just laugh at the misfortune.

Think I've said this before, but man Raptor is such a fantastic two-player game. Almost makes me wanna go on a cruise again since that was the last time my wife and I had some serious zero-interruptions board-game time. :p

Rules are super simple (though it does take a little work to grok the little details) and the game plays in ~15-20 minutes yet still feels both super strategic (getting your raptors/scientists into position) and sufficiently random (card draws and face-down selection) to really hit the absolute sweet spot for us. Patchwork is pretty up there too, but the theme comes through great in Raptor, making the game much more tense.
