New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Got Jamaica and Quadropolis for my birthday, pretty happy with that.

I'm hoping the kids can get into Jamaica, seems like they should but results have been hit or miss with games we have tried (mostly hit :))

I'm dubious about Quadropolis above two players, but two is generally all I have so looks promising.

Jamaica's a little trickier than it looks, I think. It's thoroughly a race game, but the cargo management & movement rules seem to confuse non-gamers more than they should. Certainly too much for my kids. Is utterly gorgeous though & I can't work myself up to trade it.

Can Golem Arcana be play without using the app?

Yes...but not out of the box. The instructions doesn't tell you how to play nor tell you what anything on the cards mean. No info on how much units costs or dodge values or calculating numbers with armor and terrain. Knights (the people who ride the Golems) are 100% in the app and no representation in the physical world. I suppose you could just play the base game of 3 v 3 but then you are just playing Heroscape with larger guys in a bigger board.

If you wanted to play exactly like the app, you'd have to have many print-outs that people on BGG are still working on. I feel like there would be too much to calculate on attacks with dodge/armor/range/cooldowns for me to have fun with it without the app.

tl;dr pretty much no? or at least not yet

Also, you can only play with characters you physically have because while you can move any golem around, you can only attack golems you can touch with the stick.

Broke out Eldritch Horror tonight. We squared off against Yog Sothoth.

We drew the prelude that spawns an extra tough Dunwich Horror and a buddy with a blunderbuss wrecked it, blasting 7 of its 8 health in turn one. The feeling was short lived though as once it went down we drew the mystery where we had to solve Yog's specific research cards. If you aren't familiar with his research deck its full of cards that insta-devour you if you fail the test. A nasty mythos that killed 3/4ths of us set us back enough where we couldn't catch up. Yog awoke and quickly conquered this mortal realm.

I still dig the shit out of this game. Its punishing as hell but the stories it tells...you can't help but just laugh at the misfortune.

Yeah, I am a big fan also. Just ordered Forgotten Lore and Strange Remnants yesterday and should be getting them Tuesday. I am excited to get a bunch of new content to keep the game feeling fresh.

I built a foam core box insert the other week which helps a ton with set up/clean up.

Do you have the board expansions yet? That's what made me not bother with an insert. I just throw everything in its own bag and tightly fit most of it in the box.

You guys see this?

Dungeon Crusade Kickstarter

I am intrigued, but that KS is sort of a mess. It's got a TON of content and pictures, but it feels like someone forgot to finish editing it. And the video has a few cringe moments (he calls himself the self-proclaimed dungeon crawler master or some shit), and it needed to be done with a MUCH nicer camera. Probably still going to end up backing it, though.

Yea, that looks all kinds of awful. And they are pretty much killing the whole point of board game with all the complex other boards you got to use, just play a pen and paper rpg if your going to make things so convoluted. Descent 1E did a similar thing, this looks to be taking things even further.

That looks absolutely awful, unplayable, unshippable, and un-affordable for him as a business.

No I don't have them. At this point, I don't know if I ever will pick them up just since I don't feel like I would ever have the table space to add an additional board(s). Also, the group I play with seem to enjoy Eldritch but I think adding the new boards could be too much. This could definitely change though since at this point, I have played the game maybe 8 times now and just liked the idea of the small box expansions helping keep things fresh.

Jamaica's a really great little title but definitely one of those slightly trickier than it looks lightweight games. Actually Raptor is like that too per above, and probably lots of others I'm forgetting (LIbertalia -- another really fun pirate game -- is in spirit a light game, but in rules a medium). It's mostly about the combat potentially triggering multiple times on a turn, which feels weird. I've only played it with four though. Would love to try it with 5+.

Every game, you will have no idea what encounters the heroes will have to deal with. Surprises, randomness and whimsical gameplay is at the heart of Dungeon Crusade.

Personally, I don't know how people find this sort of thing fun in such a huge, long, and complex game. Those Flying Frog games (I'm thinking Fortune and Glory) seem like less than half of this game's scope, and losing everything there, on a dumb random whim after 3 hours of slogging through random BS feels like an insane waste of time.

In Dungeon Crusade, you don't tap, or exhaust to use a cards ability. You "channel" a card to gain its effect. Simply turn the card upside down. On the next upkeep phase, just unchannel the card by turning it right side up, enabling the hero to use htis ability again this coming turn.

It would have been easy to just add text, and no art on the cards. But at Groovus Games Unlimited, we want our players immersed in the game, and make it a highly thematic experience for them.

Now that's an evolution in game design.

Got another game of Castles of Mad King Ludwig in last night. Really interesting game. It's been a while since I played, but this time I was more likely to price things people might want as a little more affordable. It is fun to look at the very best tiles each other player might want and price them super high, but the people I was playing with were more likely to grab a mediocre one for really cheap or take the opportunity to build stairs/corridors rather than pay up. Keeping the pretty good tiles affordable helped in the long run because then you actually have money to use when you're not the master builder.

I ended up winning thanks to some really nice goal cards and some ridiculous purple room clusters, which just combo off each other for sooooo many points.

A few questions. We went to PAX South in January and my sons and I were talking about it the other night. First we played a game called Velociraptor! Cannibalism!. It was a kickstarter a couple years ago and it seems to be out of print, and I've not had any luck trying to contact them. The game isn't rated well at Boardgamegeek.com but we had a ton of fun with the game and laughed the entire time we were playing. What are my options for hunting down a copy of this game?

On the show floor we sat down and played card based dueling game called Gruff. It was a demo on the show floor so it was a bit crazy. My son liked it, I thought some of the mechanics were a bit confusing so we didn't purchase a copy at the show. Has anyone here played this game? What do you think? My son keeps asking if we can buy it so I might purchase it anyway. Here is a link to the website:
http://studio-woe.myshopify.com/

Finally I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the Minecraft card game you can pick up in the game section at Target or Wal-mart for $10 - $15 is a simple fun little game. In the card game you collect resources, and use them to build tools from the tool cards to get points. It plays quick and could be used as a warm up like Sushi Go, or a quick after diner game with the family. I would highly recommend it for anyone with kids 7 - 14, and it also make a great birthday gift for kids that age, we've given away at least 5 copies.

This project would probably go more smoothly if they broke this game into like 8 pieces. But I'm still not sure it would be any good.

I can't believe that they're making cards harder to use for the sake of being different -_-

The answer is obviously made inserts for both core and expansions! After the last expansion (Under the Pyramids) I decided to go with two boxes and that help keep things nice and separate yet easy to integrate.

I wish I was able to play it enough to really feel I needed the Pyramids. I like Pyramids but I've only played it once with Antarctica and a handful times more without. Have you played the new map? How is it?

I am doing two boxes with Imperial Assault though. Figs and cards in big box, tiles in either Twin Shadows or Hoth (haven't decided which yet).

If you don't feel the need for more contents then I wouldn't get Under the Pyramids. I like Pyramids more than Mountains. The map is easily accessible and very thematic, though I think it does makes the game easier. I feel MoM would be good for large players count but I shudder at the thought of playing 6 players Eldritch game.

I am doing the same for Imperial Assault.

I refuse to play more than 5 players at Eldritch, been meaning to try it 2 players as well though don't know with who cause my gf doesn't like learning new games.

The one time the Mountains board was out it did feel pretty accessible and people seemed to teleport there a lot. Does the Pyramids do that too? Maybe if I got the Pyramids, I'd use that box for the cards.

Pyramids board is very accessible as you can get to it from several locations. We played 6 players couple of times and it was very very long. I find 4 charcters to be sweet spot for Eldritch and even when playing solo or two players with my daughter we always use 4 characters.

Eldritch is really not hard to get none gamer to play if you are willing to do the upkeep if you distill down the game mechanics are really simple, you move or take action (buy tickets or items) or rest and then you do encounter phase. Last time we played I just have everything set up tell them about objective and tell them their actions choice and off we go and explain things as we take turn as to not turn the none gamers off because looking at all the set up, Eldritch look really intimidating.

Haha yeah I saw people making fun of that one. I kinda hate TIME Stories though so not upset about it missing out. :D (Is it really that innovative too? It's a slightly gamified Choose Your Own Adventure, and that's being generous. YMMV!!!! More innovative than P:L for sure though.)

Codenames won best party game at least, which is extremely legit. Best family game too though? Seems odd. I don't think Codenames is very good with 4, and if you have 5+ you're looking for a party game anyway. :p

Oh yeah, I am the primary teacher of my group so I think it is super easy. Do 2 actions, wait until it is your turn to read a card/fight monster, roll dice, succeed or fail. But she likes playing games she knows more than learning new. I've mentioned it in the past but not pushing her. Though I feel we should finish Pandemic Legacy before trying Eldritch (on April or May).

I ended up buying a copy of Five Tribes from someone last night. It seems like it gets so much praise, so I wanted to try it. I don't think I have too many (maybe even any) games with bidding in them either, so it seemed like it was a good one to pick up (I'm not sure if I'll like auction/bidding mechanics though, having not tried a game with them). It was also a first edition version.

In bigger news, I found out that a small local store finally put up a website and they have a very limited selection of things available to purchase from their site. One of the items? The Legendary: Fantastic Four expansion for $19.99. My jaw was on the floor and my eyes had bugged out enough to be the size of dinner plates when I saw that. The site isn't too fancy, so their inventory system could be a bit wonky and it may be OOS but I'm gonna try anyway.

Getting seriously tempted to sell all my existing Zombicide "stuff" now Black Plague is incoming.

No idea how to price it all or split it up. Season 2 & 3 Kickstarters, base game, and some extra characters. The season 2 & 3 KS promo survivors still in shrinkwrap. Ideas?

Most of the zombicide stuff has been discounted on so many sites multiple times already, and being sold at almost 40% off retail, so your going to end up losing money on most stuff trying to resell, only thing you can hopefully get your money back on is the promo figs.... which has also been diluted some with how they have sold most promos at countless cons now for past few years, so the market is pretty full of these "exclusives"

Oh no doubt. Not trying to cash in & make a grand ;) The KS survivor sets (the numbered boxes) do seem to have kept some value. Maybe I go the other way & trade off Black Plague when it gets here. Too much stuff.

Trying to decide if I want to go pick up Z:Black Plague today. Local store has a copy. I had the original one but I did not have much space to play and really hated keeping track of all the characters crap. The new one looks like it has some great quality of life improvements and fixes the stupid rule that made it seem like you were aiming at your friends when you shot and might actually hit a zombie. Also like the theme more... it just costs so much.

I might be interested in the KS characters. I have everything else except those, so why not? Shoot me a msg when you come up with a price.

I don't understand the big deal with BP. It is the same thing but cool character plastic stands, medieval, and trap doors that you could make yourself.

Am I missing anything?

Now to just wait for Millennium Blades, not much longer...

Love PT. I've only played with PT1 so far (I also went in on that KS) but even just that is a pretty meaty game. I want to make a draft set at some point but starting out with symmetrical decks is appealing for teaching the game.

I was super interested in Millennium Blades and the entire concept for the game is absolute genius, but I just don't think it would ever hit the table.

I will force people to play Millennium Blades with me if required. :p

I absolutely loved the concept, the rulebook made it even more exciting and the preview videos that were released did nothing to temper my anticipation for it so I went in for the base and expansion boxes. That and I am a big fan of Level99 games since they convinced me they really know great game design with games like BattleCON and Pixel Tactics. Been looking at Argent Consortium as well but gonna hold off on it for a while since I got enough games as it is. They are soon about to start shipping the base game of Millennium Blades so hopefully I will receive it soon.

Finally got around to playing Jamaica with my family.

I have to say it went a lot better than I expected. The movement and cargo management was no problem and the hardest thing overall was reading the damn instructions. The person who thought of that particular design was nuts.

Note that I judge the success of a game by how much fun was had, not that my kids necessarily understood the strategy or competed, especially my youngest (5). But she was able to play along by herself, understood the mechanics and actually came third by hoarding gold.

The only issue in this context is I think the game is a little bit long. 1.5 hours to get around the map (mostly due to a series of low rolls) meant the last round was pushing it a bit too far for their attention span (cards started to get dropped off the table etc).

But I have to say I'd recommend it as a family game from an "everybody can have a go and be happy" perspective.

Yeah thought 504 would win most innovative and Karuba for best family game.

My usual group played through the newest TIME Stories module, A Prophecy of Dragons, last night. I'll go to bat for The Asylum any day, but the expansions have been trending downward with some serious velocity. The designers seem to think I want to keep rolling dice at their monsters. Where have the puzzles gone? And you forgot to include any dragons!

Really like the latest expansion to Elder Sign. I really prefer the direction they take their Arkham Files games and make the expansion modular.

Sad to hear it is more combat oriented again? Maybe they are trying to add replay value.

Games I played recently:
Wyatt Earp - An entry (but not really) in the Mystery Rummy series. My wife and I really love it. It's pretty much regular rummy with a theme on top. The theme is you are trying to capture outlaws, like Billy the Kid, Butch and Sundance, and the like. The melds you play adds points to the outlaw's wanted poster which makes winning certain hands mean more. The game works well with two, but I can see it being a blast with more.

Vikings - I really enjoyed this one. The box cover makes it look like a pillaging brawl, but it's actually a tile laying game with a very very light viking theme. The basic game play has players purchasing tiles and their associated viking. There is a bit of price manipulation going on as well, since the price per tile gets cheaper as the round goes on. The game has lots of good hard decisions and moments where you need to puzzle out your turns. It's a great older game.

Ticket to Ride Uk Expansion - This is like the Cities and Knights of Ticket to Ride expansions. It takes a simple game and adds a complexity to it not found in the base game. Essentially, at the start of the game you are limited to only 1-2 length routes in the England. You need to spend locomotive cards in order to build technologies that open the map for you. I found the expansion fascinating, but I also really like Cities and Knights. I wouldn't bring this out with newbies, but for people looking for a more complex version of TTR you should get this set.

Ordered a few games for my birthday. I got Grand Austria Hotel, Welcome to Walnut Grove, and Star Wars Rebellion. I really hope Rebellion gets here by the 1st because I'm going to visit a friend of mine for the weekend and it is going to be the perfect game to take.

is that gates of arkham or is the next one out already?

Looks like the newest one, Omens in Ice (or something like that).

Hey guys, I'm looking for new game recommendations. My friends and I have recently been playing boardgames on weekends and we're looking to add more to our collective collection.

Here's what we've got and enjoy:

Pandemic
Ticket to Ride
Settlers of Catan
Betrayal at House in the Hill
Avalon: The Resistance
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
King of Tokyo
Forbidden Island
Some card games (Sushi Go, Spaceteam, a Doctor Who card game...)

I'm looking into getting Ticket to Ride: Europe soon. We've been really into BaHitH this past couple of weeks. We usually play a couple of games at least and have no trouble with its level of complexity, so we'd probably be into other stuff like it.

Also, what good space-themed board games are out there? I kind of feel like I'm missing something with that setting, haha.

I would recommend Carcassonne and Dominion since those are 2 essentials missing from your list. Really great games. I haven't played these yet but as far as space-theme, you might want to look into these: Race for the Galaxy, Cosmic Encounter, and Galaxy Trucker

I picked up Istanbul and Codenames today - really looking forward to trying both of them out! Top of my most wanted list now is: Orleans, The Voyages of Marco Polo, and Caverna...

Thanks! Yeah, I recognize those names, haha. I'm gonna check the space ones out, see if one catches my attention :) thanks!

Forgot to add: We actually also have Seven Wonders, but the last time we tried playing it it was like 11pm and none of us could get through the manual before giving up, and we ended playing more Ticket to Ride instead. Is that one worth giving another shot?

7 wonders is a well designed game and worth giving another shot.
once you get the symbols down it's a very easy game to play and should only take 30-60 minutes to play.

It's not my favorite game, but it's a game that I can easily see why it gets the praise it gets.

Played Mage Knight for the first time Friday with some buddies. It's a fun game but its pretty long too. Overall I enjoyed it. I wanted to purchase it so I could play it solo but its pretty pricey :(

Anyway, what are some similar style games that can be played single or multiplayer? Bonus points if it's a SciFi game :)
