New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

There is no real one reason imho, just a lot of small reasons that add up. They're also not trying to shut out other vendors from having their webstores, but they need to justify its existence as well.
Well the real reason is they want to have price control on their products, and that is the only reason. Saving FLGS is just their spin and excuse for price control.

Just found out yesterday that the owner of my local game store was the "Bearded Bandit". He was robbing banks. He said he was doing it to pay bills.

So I'm looking for a competitive 5 player game. I'd prefer something like Settlers of Catan but I'm open for anything. I found some but would like some impressions on them.

Yes / No, and are these even player Vs player games?

- haven't seen any episodes or read any books, still playable?

Oh and is there an expansion for Dominion to make it a 5p game? Any ideas appreciated.

You've picked some classic 5 player games there in El Grande & Game of Thrones, but they play very differently to Catan; what is it from Settlers of Catan that you like, what is it you want "more" of?

I just think Catan is really complete as a game. I like the fairly easy gameplay but it still has some strategic aspects to it. One of my favs for sure.

I wouldn't mind a Catan game for 5 players, and I guess I'm looking for a Catan replacement in a way to fit 5 players. Our game group has a lot of 5 player games - Arkham, Betrayal, Dead of Winter, Robinson, Fury of Dracula etc. - but they're all co-op.

E: Dominion is also in my top 5 list.

Dominion: Intrigue expands it to 5-6 players.

I'm not really sure what to recommend that is easy but has some strategy for 5 players.

I'm not looking for easy games. As stated, we play a lot of different types of games.

So with that expansion I can play the other expansions with 5 players as well? Will have to check that, thanks.

I'm not certain but I suspect that's the case. It should increase the number of base cards as needed.

I like to try and support my local stores but mine seem too expensive. Recently I ordered Halo Fleet Battles from a store in Toronto and even with shipping I saved $40.

Dominion: Intrigue will be worth getting to expand the player count up to 6. I'd also recommend Istanbul which goes up to 5 and has fairly easy gameplay but a good amount of strategy. Perhaps Carcassonne and Puerto Rico too?

Edit: Catan also has an expansion which adds more players

Ticket to Ride would be my recommendation. Easy to learn but has enough depth to it that it meets your strategy criteria especially if you are looking for something that requires a rethink of strategy mid game due to one's planned route becoming blocked. It has that 'complete' feeling about that Catan does too. It is easy to see why both games have been so widely beloved for so long.

I always recommend Cyclades and Kemet to people looking for 5 player games. They are spiritual siblings; both area control with Greek and Egyptian themes respectively. In Cyclades, each action can only belong to one player each turn, so players bid their coins to get the actions they want. The Titans expansion is excellent. In Kemet, there is a buffet of different powers laid out on the table that get "drafted" throughout the game, making each player's strengths unique by the end. Kemet might be my single favorite board game.

I also think 5 is the best number for 7 Wonders if you're open to more card games after Dominion.

I think Terra Mystica plays 5? It's really good. And the board looks like Catan! Kinda.

I've been watching a lot more BG-related videos. Which channels do people like?

The Dice Tower is sort of the king, though they're really high volume and some of the subchannels they feed through there are pretty mediocre though I'm always down for a Tom video: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiwBbXQlljGjKtKhcdMliRA

Watch It Played is something I get super excited about when there's a game I want to learn :p: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGK9n7svoIjuaQfRIBJXkqQ

The GameBoyGeek has a good balance of volume and quality: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiCsq2nRDngI64idWx_VMRQ

Drive Thru Review has particularly level-headed and good insights in game reviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBYM2vSw8EUTBDavzOwdyPw

What I really like the most but can't find a ton of is channels dedicated to teaching games and board-game news. Seems like 99% of people do reviews only.

It's 5 players, not 4.

That Kemet sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to check if it's available here. Thanks for these.

I have been watching a lot of Dice Tower lately. Tom Vasel has a pretty diverse taste which is great, and I like the balance that Sam and Zee provide when they do Top 10s and reviews together.

I also really like the channel Rahdo Runs Through, where he simulates an extensive game run-through before sharing his final thoughts. His focus is on Eurogames. http://www.youtube.com/user/rahdo/videos

Not a fan of Dice Tower. Their videos seem so low quality and they barely show the game at all. If you're a fan of podcasts then I might see the appeal but they're certainly not for me.

Also Radho's channel is okay if you already know the game. He isn't teaching anything, he misses some rules and just runs through the games.

Watch it played is my goto channel when it comes to games. The dude knows his shit and it's an easy way to learn a new game.

I also enjoy Starlit Citadel https://www.youtube.com/user/StarlitCitadel

If anyone is interested in the game Golem Arcana by Harebrained Schemes, I know a guy who is selling a ton of stuff for rock bottom prices (It's all new and on clearance). It's too bad the game died, but there is still a ton of content and it's a lot of fun. With the scenario maker on the app, there is an almost endless amount of games to be played. If you're interested I can send you a link.

Yeah I've been listening to Dice Tower for years so just from sort of knowing Tom's tastes and preferences so well I can glean a lot of value even from a brief review. The only thing I'll say about their video channel is that I'm not a huge fan of Zee. For a fundamentally dorky channel, he is super low-energy and sometimes even a bit of a buzzkill. Like in his interview with Eric Lang he was just completely disinterested even when Lang was really trying to get him into it. /shrug

WIP is great, but they don't put out videos too often. If you like them, I'd recommend checking out Gameboygeek too as he has good production values and similar high energy.

I watch dice tower, drive thru review and rahdo. That is more than enough.

Dice tower covers your volume. I think they are pretty under the thumb of certain publishers, so you need to be careful of games they hype. I'm also not a big fan of the religious backgrounds that occasionally pop up, but that is a personal thing. Also Jason.

I actually like Zee the best on dice tower because of his different take on games and dry sense of humour (I guess that can be taken for lack of energy?).

Drive thru review doesn't offer many videos, but they always seem very sincere and detailed.

Rahdo is great for running through a game you just got to get an idea. He explains things way better than I could. He also seems to cover kickstarter games while being honest about not liking them.

Starlit Citadel was my favorite review series (it's over now) -- I liked how the presenters concisely covered the basics of the game and then summarized what they liked and disliked about it. That sounds simple, but what's absurd is how do few others could hit both points -- Rahdo is excruciatingly slow (and yet gets things wrong anyway) whereas Dice Tower barely touches upon the game structure in their reviews. That said, I do like the discussion in Miami Dice between Tom and Sam (and sometimes Zee).

I think 7 Wonders is a good suggestion for 5 players. I'd suggest that over Istanbul or Cyclades. Cyclades is kind of interesting, but the theme and the mini-Risk gameplay can be really hit or miss with certain players.

Miami Dice is my favorite review show by far just because of the different perspectives all in one place. I like Tom's reviews also but he seems to do less of them lately and it helps to know what his taste is before hand. I find that the game summaries generally give me a sense for how the game functions.

Have you discovered Shut Up and Sit Down?

By far the best board gaming videos out there, but they only do about two or three videos in a month. The people who started Shut Up and Sit Down are former writers from Eurogamer and Rock Paper Shotgun. Rather than drone on about rules and vague adjectives, they bring a level of insight and humor into the actual experience that helps me better understand a game. I may not always agree with their choices, but they damn sure know how to back them up.

Oh and as for supporting my local board gaming store...I live in Canada. Most stores in my city price their games at $70. I've seen Ticket for Ride sell for $100 here. It's insane. So, yeah, I'll stick to buying online.

Man shut up and sit down. I really dont enjoy their videos. They are so inconsistent with how they feel about a game, and you never really get any sense how a game play. If anyone is vague its them imo.

Is there a shut up and sit down video that is a "must watch" to demo them at their best? I've seen a couple and to be honest found them pretty awful (not entertaining or informative). But maybe I just picked a bad sample.

I liked their Pandemic: Legacy and a Skull reviews -- you gotta keep in mind with them though that unlike al,lost all other channels their main audience really is non-gamers, and they deliberately eschew the usual review approach.

Has this ever worked in any other industry? I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but most FLGS are kinda gross and don't really deserve to be propped up by the big board game companies.

Pretty much every major consumer product typically has price controls in place by the manufacturers/wholesalers. Like most major electronics, outside of slight variances in sale prices once in a while, they can't drop below certain points as part of their buying agreements.

I have issues with most of these current board game online sites. SUSD (videos) comes across a bit pretentious at times and a bit ADD. I know what they say is a matter opinion but for example, I completely disagree with their Lords of Xidit review.

Wish there was something I could recommend. But I am trying to make an online group that I would think fit the bill.

Ayup, and like I said earlier, as much as this is price control, big box stores won't be bound by this as they add visibility to the product. My LGS doesn't really care about CSI (the regulars will buy stuff from the lgs due to a discount loyalty program and the fact that they like the store); but they complain about big box stores and they'll try to stock on what big box stores don't have.

Put in my BG order for the month. Still supporting CSI! :p

- My First Stone Age
- Concept: Giant Play Mat
- Legendary Marvel Deckbuilding Game: Captain America 75th Anniversary Expansion
- Legendary Encounters: Predator Deckbuilding Game

Also Skull is back in print if anyone was waiting for that. I should be getting it in pretty soon -- excited to try it out as it feels like finally the kind of light bluffing game that's up my alley (really cringe during/hate Resistance and all other Mafialikes -- just a personal thing, as I totally get why people enjoy them though also kind of laugh when you hear stories about people getting genuinely upset at each other during the game and then deciding to subject themselves to that again :p).

Im really upset with asmodee right now.
Im sales manager for my boardgame store and they rejected us as "specialty retailer" i dont know what to do about it. We've been selling ffg, days of wonder and their products for years.
We dont sell online or anything, so i didnt think this change would affect us at all. I dont fully understand what their prerequisites are for selling their products.

Dang, who would have ever guessed that a former hobbyist company taken over by investment groups would turn into jerks completely out of touch with the hobby? :p

Hey if this slate of moves turns into a huge financial success for them, I can only meekly complain. But I do hope that there is some blowback because I find online stores completely essential to my enjoyment of the hobby, when it comes to pricing, convenience, and responsiveness, so needless to say I'm not too excited about an orchestrated campaign against them. Seeing even FLGS get hit by this (Alc, I've seen similar experiences on BGG) just goes to show that ANA is being pretty brazen about all of this and appears to think they can very easily push people around (and maybe they can!).
