Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

I understand a few of the complaints, I noticed slowdown in the initial area and found it somewhat odd. But game breaking or warrant such negative comments? No, I don't think so.

SE even mentioned that FFXV is not a solid 30fps and their end goal is to achieve that and that they may be working on this all the way up to launch. So.... If they don't make it, I fully expect a post launch update to do so as many other games have done.

I thoroughly enjoyed the demo and I found the game to be very light hearted, something I haven't experienced in quite awhile.

I just played through this now and I have to say I'm a bit puzzled.
I find it weird that before this event this demo was pushed as a techdemo and now at the uncovered event it was suddenly an entryway into the series for newcomers etc. Don't think the demo did any good here.

I mean it was OK, I must say I liked duscae a lot more. As it was a techdemo I find it really weird that they would ask players if they want to buy the game when they have completed the demo, like the combat sure as hell won't sell the game to a lot of people.
It feels weird that they didn't unlock more of noct's arsenal(two weapons and a spell only?) in the final fight, I wanted this fight to allow players to experiment with more weapons and combos and spells and the like. Like, the footage we have seen before seemed to have more depth than what we could play here.

I kinda miss some "oompf" in the melee hits, it feels kinda off/weak at times. Music was really good in my opinion. Art style is really good, and apparently the res is 1080p so they need to get some nice AA and get the framerate nailed down if this game is going to be good.

All in all, I'm not sure what I expected. I'm cautiously optimistic. Have preordered the deluxe edition already, but this demo didn't make me want to cancel it but then again, if I played this demo and knew nothing about FFXV there's no way I'd preordered it.

I did the exact same thing. Destroyed the box thinking there'd be something inside. Then I saw the orbs above :(

Kind of a really odd demo overall for a game coming out in a few months. It's a tech demo essentially. It's REALLY weird in that I think the demo expects me to be impressed by stuff that has existed in games for a very long time now. Like, look at this! A real-time day night cycle! Check out this real-time physics, the blocks fall over realistically! Oh wow, different weather effects! That said, the combat was more interesting than FFXIII for me, but then I again I really hated FFXIII's combat system. That said I'm not really a fan of ARPG's. Presentation-wise, the demo had really good production values (save for the courtyard area prior to teleporting to the boss fight) and the music, especially in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids part, was good. I'm intrigued, but nothing about the demo is compelling me to pre-order at the moment. I will probably give the game a shot when it comes out.

Really? I thought the combat system was one of the biggest strong points of XIII (along with music/graphics/Lightning and Fang).

TBH I'd have much preferred that system over what we have currently with XV.

I'm not one of those people who are "turn based or bust". I'm perfectly fine with Action RPG's. More importantly for me is whatever they pick, it just has to be good. I wasn't a fan of Duscae's combat and this doesn't inspire me either. Action systems can be amazing. But if they're bad then they are really bad. Not saying this is that bad but from what we've seen and played thus far it's worse that any other FF battle system I've played.

It's not that turn based is inherently better than Action. I'd say it just has a higher floor. If the feel of action is off it can ruin the whole combat. See the compaints about Witcher III. Turn based on the other hand doesn't really have that weakness in terms of mechanical feel since it's usually more tactically driven and strategic.

Turn based or Action is fine. But if you do Action do it right. Otherwise you may as well just stick with what works in turn based

Great post. Final Fantasy revolutionized turn-based combat (IMO) and it was at its best in FFX (again IMO). I also loved XIII's system (was that turn based? I guess so).

This is just... ehhh....

Never played a Final Fantasy game before, so after watching the event I thought why not try the demo. I think the game looks beautiful, though the FPS is really bad in this demo. Felt like it was sub 30 FPS the whole way through. I've really liked the combat system, though the controls are a bit janky. They should really work on those two things. This might be the first Final Fantasy game I'll buy, I like the idea of a road-trip with your group through the land in a fantasy world

So much backlash here , it's just a tech demo . It's only the bad IQ(lack of AA) that is agreeable , combat is fine IMO . I really think FFXV will be this year Witcher 3 , great overall content in story , characters and soundtrack , but serviceable only combat and games performance .

I just finished the demo, after playing both its clear Final Fantasy mainline games are no longer for me. It wants to be an ARPG but its system is at least 10 years old, it just looks modern. The movie looks cool though so I'll watch that.

this's what it continues to come down to for me. i imagine i could put up with all the other stuff (well, if i tried hard enough, anyway :) ). but the combat system just don't do it for me, &, in an rpg, combat's pretty much element #1...

Iron giant fight is a lot of fun once you get the hang of maneuvering with warp and air combos. But the li'l Noctis gameplay doesn't prep you, and I think they should have put the giant res pawn pad in a more obvious place.

Honestly i wasnt feeling it at first, but getting the Cross shuriken and Hero Shield was a game changer, especially the shuriken changing between long range weapons and short range really helps keep things interesting. The warping aswell on my 4th try against the Iron Giant i only got hit once.

My favourite part was when i stopped its zoning attack by warp attacking @ 00:45 and dodging its ground pound by warping behind it @ 1:30 :D

Honestly felt pretty badass

The shuriken warp strike is so good.
Overall im more hyped knowing we get evem more weapons.

Only complaint is camera can be finniky and jumping is still too low.

I don't think it's gonna be anywhere close to Witcher storywise. Characterization either. Everything else sure.

Also Blood and Wine will be this years Witcher 3 :3

Pretty short demo, ran slightly choppy on the XBO, might try it on PS4 later if I remember. I really like the way the game looks.

So the only FF game I've ever sunk more than a couple of hours into was Crystal Defenders on PSP (yeah I know) but I really enjoyed the way this game looked when I saw the reveal trailer so I've decided that I'm going to make FFXV my first real attempt at a FF game, I hope it's great. I won't need to know anything from the previous games to understand what's going on right? As far as I can tell they all seem kind of independent from one another

Although how is Type 0? Because I have a feeling there will be a game gap around July/August, maybe I'll give that a try.

The purpose of the demo, according to Square Enix, is to give players a look at the finished game's visuals, as well as introduce them to the final combat and magic systems.

That's the issue though; the characters (from what we've seen) are try-hard bad boys dressed up like a bad nu-metal band from 2003. Their personalities are awful.

The story? IDK what the story even is at this point. It was supposed to be a Romeo/Juliet deal (not the most original thing in the world) to begin with, but they seem to have even watered that down.

I just can't get hyped for this. It sucks. I really hope it turns out great so that FF continues on, but at the same time I don't want SE rewarded for giving us this seemingly bloated, lifeless, mess.

Nice. Where do you get the shuriken?

Night in the rain is the only way to fight this guy...

I've maybe played a total of 90 minutes between the first Duscae demo and this one. But man, I'm feeling fatigued of the "enemy's close/senses you" sound and the battle theme music already.

I did not have this problem with XIII for whatever reason. All I can hope for is, maybe I can push past the fatigue and tune out the music completely at some point I guess. I would hope for the music being varied throughout, but that's very unlikely to happen as typically the battle music remains the same throughout the game (at least the FF I've played) unless it's a boss.

Nice looking game, mediocre arpg. There are PS2 games that play better. Kingdom Hearts being on of them. So far this is just a REALLY dumbed down Kingdom Hearts.

Really weird decision to omit the shield, shuriken, warp, and armiger unless you're diligent enough to go find them, and find out that you can fight the boss again at a higher level.

The combat only really works if you've got a variety of tools at your disposal, and for whatever reason they limited it to two weapons, a fire spell, and no warp or armiger by default.

I hate the combat in this. I didn't think FF13 was a good game but they got the combat right, should have stuck with something similar. The only thing I liked about this demo was the music.

I do think if SE addresses the "lagginess" of the combat, it will be much better. It's a fast paced system, but the on screen action takes too long to happen after you've input your commands.

This looks awesome

well that was a rough demo

Visuals were lacking, combat was super bland

Never played Duscae and if last night's event wasn't that good then I prob would've lost all hype til launch

Did you play the boss a second time when the teleport options open up?

No, I didn't. I might try again later but I doubt teleporting is going to 180 me from where I am now with the game. I just don't like this type of battle system. When this was announced as a spinoff of Final Fantasy and not a mainline game a decade ago I had no issue with it. They really should experiment with sequels and spinoffs. This just deviates a little too far from what I enjoy about Final Fantasy.

I don't mind Final Fantasy mainline game trying out arpg for one go around. I mean it's not like the battle system's the same from game to game anyway so why not have one be an arpg.

I like that you can now easily switch between weapons but... I sort of miss Episode Duscae combat slightly better because it switched into a combo for you, moving for the d-pad is very awkward.

Why can't we have a option to turn automatic combos on while still being able to switch to certain weapons by using the d pad?

Other then that, my only other complaint is button placement but that can easily be corrected by letting us change our controls to anything we want. Very fun demo, it was a nice show off for the rest of the game. Meteor is best move <3

I might have agreed when we were getting 3 new 80+ hour mainline games per generation but this thing took so long to come out and the next one is probably years and years off. Seems like a big risk of alienating core fans if this is the only FF that comes out this generation.

I feel you, and no, you're right...it probably won't drastically change your opinion. But getting the ability to teleport, the stars and the shield help a little, for sure.

I have the same feeling about the graphics, from a company that is supposed to excel in this area, it looked.... rough. Actually it doesn't look much better than XIII. Even Carbuncle looks crap. I don't class myself as a graphics whore either.

You know, I thought the exact same thing while playing the demo: "This barely looks any better than XIII." But I didn't want to say anything here since I figured it would be interpreted as hyperbole, plus it has admittedly been years since I played XIII, so my memory is a little hazy. From what I recall though, it was a gorgeous game and definitely was one of the finest looking on the PS3. Even the other games in the Lightning trilogy took a step backwards graphically compared to it.

Man, why does this demo look so underwhelming? :/ You can usually count on a mainline FF to bring the eye candy. If it isn't representative of the full product then fine, no complaints for now, but we don't know if that's the case yet.

And I really hate how much it plays and feels like Kingdom Hearts. I've nothing against that franchise, but Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts is Kingdom Hearts, and never the twain shall should meet.

Oh boy.

Can someone give me some assurance that the combat with grown up Noctis at the end of the demo is not representative of the final product... I've been so excited about this game for so long and just felt so disappointed with the combat in this new demo. I actually felt like Episode Duscae combat felt better. It may have a lot to do with the updated controls. The attack/defend buttons really don't feel right and warp striking felt very awkward to me as well... Ugh. I kinda wish I didn't play that new demo.

Like I said no two battle systems were the same so I zero problems with this at all. Nothings gonna change your opinion but they have the right to try one out as an arpg. I mean I would understand you if all the battle systems were the same but they're not.

The PC version of the XIII trilogy looks better than this demo from an IQ standpoint for sure. Textures are nicer here but draped in so much smear from the motion blur and whatever AA solution they are using that it is a wash.

I could not agree more on the bolded. Like I said earlier we have a KH3 game set for release next year. Did they really need a mainline FF that plays in the vein of KH with the releases that close. Is that really what people want? I know I didn't. I even managed to buy the mediocre XIII on PS3 and PC. This I have no interest in.

No matter how good the story is, the combat in the Witcher is so boring that I can't get very far before getting fed up and putting it down. I've never been so disappointed in a purchase.

I like what I'm playing here, so this game has already surpassed the Witcher for me.

Just finished the demo and I was impressed. I read people's comments here before loading it up and I was braced for the worst (IQ, frame rate, etc) and I was stunned that it was nowhere near as bad as people were saying. Maybe its because I had an entire room between me and the TV (50") but I didn't notice a horrible IQ. Frame rate could use some polishing but as it stands, its not that bad.

I never played the Duscae demo so this was my first introduction to how the game looks, sounds, and controls and I came away very impressed. It made my PS4 rage like a jet engine though and I don't like the idea of replacing it with the PS4K on the horizon.

But my hype is firmly in place and I've been a skeptic since day one
(ten years ago)
so that's a good thing.

Awesome! I've been trick styling in the air for the most part gotta find those weapons. Idk if you knew that you can do this:

http://youtu.be/pJIf0Ma7t7o
http://youtu.be/EyVINq97ym0

I'll go in deep later again with the other weapons.

Just put in an hour and 10 minutes into the demo.

 • It looks really pretty
 • music is really good
 • But that waterfall in the city was just lol
 • Weather effects and the day night lighting was really nice
 • Driving was fun I guess
 • Not sure what it is with the fur and hair in this game, it looks all...fuzzy? In a very unrealistic way.
 • The camera can't be zoomed in or out? Why?
 • The camera also bobbing up and down with jumps is a bit disorienting because everything just shakes and isn't smooth.
 • I don't know how to feel about the combat. Holding O to attack and combo feels strange. Like I didn't really have any control on what was happening.
 • Holding □ to defend also was strange. Maybe I need to play it more but it felt like you could only block if you were holding it for a set time beforehand and that just tapping it did nothing. Just rolling away just didn't seem effective.
 • I also don't understand how warp works. It doesn't help that you have that dumb boss chasing you and not giving me a more calm chance to see what the heck I could even climb onto.
 • Carbuncle is adorable as heck at least.

I noticed that the resolution changes - maybe to keep the frame pacing, which is good

Also, I was playing again and noticed that when you fight the boss for the first time, he is level 3. When you fight for the second time, he is level 15

Finished the demo. I think Duscae was a way better vertical slice into the game.

- One of the worst ''Throw'' system I ever saw in the magic system. I thought Division's way of throwing grenade sucked, boy was I wrong, it could be way worse.
- Music was as always A+
- It was disappointing Raindrop did not combine with Thunderstorm, missed opportunity here, and Fire with the canister against the Iron Giant. As far as I saw it did nothing more as well.
- The camera seems mostly the same, when you fight with enemies all around you have poor awareness, way too zoomed in. Just like Kingdom Hearts.
- Frame-rate seems to fluctuate a lot (Played on PS4), I wonder if Digital Foundry will look into this demo felt like it was at 25-27 plenty of time. Hopefully they can fix this before the release.
- I liked how Iron Giant punished mindless aggression but after a few kill it was very easy to abuse Warp Strike multiplier and take him down in no time without needing Fire or Armiger, Shuriken or Hero Shield. Something about the combat feels off, weapon impact seems to lack ''oomph''. They could've spiced it up and timed attack press do more damage or something rather than hold. Same thing with perfectly timed dodge. Hopefully there's a difficulty level right from the start, not hidden behind normal like in Lightning's Return.
- They need to fix this weird input lag. Game doesn't feel as responsive as it should. Jumping is the easiest way to see the delay.

I just played the demo and I'm kind of underwhelmed.

The music is great. Classic Shimomura and very Kingdom Hearts. The battle system feels like Kingdom Hearts too except much simpler, in a bad way. You pretty much spam the same button with the occasional dodge. Maybe it gets more interesting with more weapons, I don't know, but if the goal of the demo was to get me excited for the game, I'd say it's closer to doing the opposite.

the combat feels good now , I can do couple of strategies considering we have two weapons in the Demo I can see how the combat looks like with more various weapons , the party Co-attack and Magic

I'm hyped for the game

What a strange demo. I would have rather tried episode duscae. The only part I enjoyed was when you actually got to fight that thing in the plaza.

Well i still hate the fighting system. I still think they're going to frustrate 70% of their base fans with that and that's a fatal mistake. It's not fun, it's complicated, frustrating, not intuitive.. and certainly have nothing in common with any rpg, nor action rpg.

The demo looked like SE is more preoccupied by showcasing all its brand new techs, by making them run horribly on underpowered platforms, rather than making games, sense and telling stories..

What was the point of that demo ? Impersonating Kingdom Heart with FFXV engine ? Everything was so random.. I'm ok with them throwing something for fun at us, for free. But when you have to convince people your game has a direction, i'm not sure that's the best thing to do.. to offer a custom random tech showcase with a gameplay that screams: "oh my all those tools, we can use them!! Let's put toy bricks so the player can move them in slowmo with horrible collisions detection!!" "Also let's use our glorious day/night engine with zero gameplay nor story idea behind it!"

The problem is almost all the SE communication, those last months, have been about the tech aspect of their game. They really act like they are Crytek or Epic. I could almost imagine FFXV is just a big marketing tool for an engine they would like to license.

Yeah can last longer if you explore the environments to find all the gems.

Because FF is apparently now spyro the fucking dragon.

Bruh why do you hate PS1 games? That's exactly what it felt like when I started having to collect them and it was really refreshing for a PS4 game.

Music was amazing. Battle system was better, but still felt extremely simple.

It actually punishes trying to dodge during an enemy attack, which seems counter intuitive.

The battle system remains my biggest fear moving forward.
