Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

Hmm I really don't like the battle system. This button holding is weird and kind of not fun for me. Other than that I don't have any big complaints. But with battles being a major part of Final Fantasy -> I'll pass. Reminds me too much of Kingdom Hearts (and I dropped that very quick because of the boring battles).
Was button holding possible as an adult?

Also, I honestly can't understand how people feel turn based battles are more "exciting". You're basically just standing there waiting for your turn.

yes yes it was it was just spam FTW compared to souls game this combat is very much garbage, you might like it but i wont be spending my money on FF15

There is no spam to win. You hold square to dodge for every counter, you then switch weapons to combine attacks. You warp to parts of the map and regain quick stasis. This is not a souls game period. You don't play hack and slash.

The demo is fine.

But it tells me the final game uses an *almost* exact battle system from Type-0, which is one of the two worst things of the game.

I thought Tabata would learn from his Type-0 experience and evolve - I was COMPLETELY wrong.

My thought processes before, during and after this demo:

1. Only 3GB, huh? That seems a little low for a modern game.
2. The entire demo is a dream? OK I guess.
3. Ah, that voice acting. Yep, this is a modern Final Fantasy game, alright.
4. What are the orange collectibles for?
5. OK the combat controls fairly nicely but I wish I could swap the attack and defend buttons. Square is my hit button, damn it!
6. Doesn't appear that I can take damage. Well, it is a dream but come on this is getting repetitive.
7. Managing equipment is nice and simple. Love it.
8. OK so I've learned that Noctis is a prince, whose dad is barely there for him and who is a playful dreamer. Cool. I'm on board. Give me more story.
9. Holy balls, the surround sound is good in this game. Especially when it's raining.
10. Yep, combat is getting repetitive but the blue enemies are getting more varied. And it's giving me more powerful weapons if I find the item buttons.
11. Locked switches? Oh, is that what the collectibles are supposed to unlock? How many do I need?
12. Some of the switches spawn balls that I can kick around. Anything I'm supposed to do with that?
13. I can transform into creatures and vehicles if I step on the right switches. Random. That's not going to happen outside of this dream, I take it?
14. Cool, a boss!
15. Oh, NOW I can take damage.
16. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
17. Why am I so shit at this?
18. How do I heal?
19. Big sword does big damage, little sword lets me teleport to hang off objects in the environment. That is neat.
20. Did it. Now to fight that boss 3 more times because that was awful.
21. The end. Well, I don't know if that contributed anything to the plot whatsoever. But it was fun.
22. No I'm not ordering the game. Don't make me feel guilty about that. I do want the game but fuck off with the PS store's prices. Plus I might want to trade it in later.

I really enjoyed this demo! The atmosphere, music, and combat are all great imo. I've been wanting a AAA real-time 'action' FF game since I bought FF: Mystic Quest as a kid mistakenly thinking it was like 'A Link to the Past'. Lol

It is a bit rough around the edges, but given the scope of the game that doesn't bother me.

It still worked for me. But it was more confusing as adult Noctis. Maybe There is more to it but I didn't like it. But I have a friend who'll get it anyway so I'll have plenty of time to see the final release and decide^^

As for turn-based: I love TB like Xcom/Wizardry with movement and more advanced systems. I never thought that the FF turn-based battles are very exciting or hard compared to some crpgs. Action is fine. But not like that.

Having not played the Duscae demo, I enjoyed my brief time with this. I replayed the battle at the end a few times to get a better handle on warping about while attacking. Once it clicked though I was having fun and looking through some of the YT vids of people playing through the first demo, I think I will enjoy visiting FF again once September rolls around.

Agreed. Souls is currently my favorite series but fuck does that get old. Not every game needs to be Souls. That's how you get Lord of the Fallen.

not every game needs to be souls but i didn't say that i just used that as an example of good combat, and what i experienced in this demo is very far from 'good' coupled with the horrible framerate this game went from my most anticipated list to wait and see.... those are two core issues with the game no matter what you want to call this 'demo' that are deal breakers

So like in duscae, you can time a dodge and not lose no or hold the button to dodge and expen mp. Holding versus pressing o to attack changes nothing I think.

Can't point warp with big sword.
Bigger distance away leads to bigger damage on teleport strike.
Moving the left stick in the air lets you teleport(expends mp). Good for holding back and dodging a strike while doing an air combo.

Anyone know how to instigate the parry command or is it random/based solely on that strike?

I enjoyed what I played but I don't think I'll be spending nearly as much time with this as I did with Duscae (which I still like to play occasionally).

All of my fears went away with that demo. I was afraid the game wouldn't feel like an exiting adventure and wouldn't have the Nomura touch anymore but man that demo feels like Kingdom Hearts and I love it!! I know the final game wont be like that but it would be amazing to have dreams like that in the game. Like in FF8 with Laguna :) That conference was amazing! <3 what this CEO is doing so far!
PS: notice how I didn't talk about frame rate, resolution or technical things? It's because I still care about what's important .. the actual game.

Out of genuine curiosity, when has a demo for an RPG ever blown anyone away? I get SE wanted to put something playable in people's hands, but this seems the one sour note from Uncovered.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but understand how people not keeping up with the game and who hadn't played Duscae would find it underwhelming.

Maybe if they'd just released a pure combat demo against giant and some other enemies with a proper battle tutorial people would be singing a different tune....

It's not a tech demo. It's literally only a regular demo. A regular demo that the devs already said that is pretty close to the final product.
Young Noctis is the lead character in the free Final Fantasy XV tech demo

A screenshot of young Noctis was shown ahead of the March event as they didn’t want to wait until then to present it.

This was revealed in the ATR at the end of January. Heck the demo has options to allow the player to change time of day/weather etc.

The demo is also an "old build" and not what the retail version will be. This is not a Beta FFS =/

So the controls are really clunky. It felt really irrational at times. Also horrible frame rate drops when casting the bigger spells. I see a lot of work still to be done. I'm a bit afraid, but I still pre-ordered it. Maybe they'll patch it after the launch.

That was a pretty poor demo in any regard. Not expecting anything as large as Episode Duscae, but even the gameplay was lacking. The one point it threw any real gameplay at you was right at the very end, and even then you could miss that proper if you went straight to the end.

I can't even tell if it's better with the new weapons switching, we don't get to try it with any skills apart from the arbiter. It's too hard to judge anything when it takes too long to even get a health bar. One last thing is the change in controls. L1 to guard and Square to attack feel so much more natural than Square to guard and Circle to attack.

This demo has hardly sold me on the game because it doesn't seem to represent everything else that the game has shown. Thankfully, Duscae did that.

Game doesn't come it till September, they have enough time to lock down frame rate.

My thoughts: I enjoyed it. Not as much as Duscae but there wasn't nearly as much to it as Duscae, which I didn't expect there to be. They still have months to keep refining, and based on the 1 month improvement from Duscae 1.0 to Duscae 2.0 I'm sure they'll have everything in working order.

The combat at the end was fun, but there wasn't really enough combat options available to get a real opinion on the final battle system. Going to play it again tonight and try to unlock the extra weapons and see how they make it feel. But this is very clearly a tech demo, as it was stated in January.

even if the game sucks i will still play it just for the music alone lol.

Just put in another hour into the demo.

How many gems are there in this game? Got 385 this time.

Shuriken with warp is OP man. Stun lock for days.

Don't understand:
how to combo while warping
You can only combo warp with the small sword, notice how when I do one slash of the big sword in the air and switch again to keep myself in the air. It consumes MP btw you can control the direction of warp just moving in the direction that please.

The combats started to click for me which is something that never happened with Duscae. It makes me want to back and play Duscae to see if I was just crap or if the combat has gotten better. Tech issues worry me a little tbh, but hey we're like 6 months out and if I'm desperate I'll wait for PC

We don't know if it will suck yet. The real game looks a million times better and more fun than this tech demo.

Yeah, the infiltration video's battle system looks way better than even the fight at the end of the demo. I doubt they regressed the entire battle system in two months. This is most likely a tech demo built from an old build.

Just finished it and.. I think it's incredible, especially visually.

However, Duscae was definitely the better demo. I think this demo does a poor job at explaining the mechanics and what the game can offer, really a poor choice and I don't know how they didn't see this backfiring with people who never tried Duscae before.

Duscae was boring, but the combat was way better than in this so called demo. At least you could make some cool combos with your buddies.

Still, this holding the button down to see stuff happening on screen is even worse than reaction commands in KH2.

OK good news. It clicked! I still stumble a bit due to the mirrored controls (seriously. Why did they do this?) but I've wrapped my head around it. I wish they gave us a bit more fire spells. I accidentally wasted mine first run through. I can see myself enjoying the full combat experience. I'm combining Duscaes party attacks with Platinums basics and I can see it meshing well.

The bad news is its incredibly easy now that I've got the hang of things. Even the level 15 Iron Giant is easily beatable with a good strategy. Still not a fan of the camera either.

Played a bit of the demo, wasn't expecting to run around collecting crystals like in some platformer lol.
The part where Noctis shrinks gave me some serious TLG vibes.
Only did the first fight so I can't say much about the battle system but I kinda like what they're going for with this demo.

During the boss if you go on the left/right sides of the arena there are pads that replenish your spells.

Good to hear you enjoyed it. I agree that Duscae was the actual and better "demo" here.

Atleast you didn't go over the top like some of the comments here :D

I will say the demo was enjoyable.

I like the Weapon Change System much more than the Automatic Combat System from Episode Duscae.

I tried Duscae and can't go back with the automated weapon switching, however i do miss having the guys around healing you, doing party attacks and whatnot. But I loved my time with this. I just rush thru the demo and battle the giant over and over.
