Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

...da fuq did I just play? I haven't seen much to get me excited about this game and this certainly didn't do it.

My biggest concern coming out of this demo is the combat. It seemed Kingdom Hearts-ish and I'm just not a fan of those games. I personally prefer ATB/CTB over all else in the series, but do greatly enjoy both XII and XIII's combat systems. I had watched some gameplay from the previous demo and didn't like what I was seeing, and playing this was pretty damning. It's like an action game that's just convoluted enough to not be called an action game.

Carbuncle looks adorbs, though.

Do we know what is causing the ugly aliasing? Because I swear it's extremely inconsistent. Reminds me of Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Look at the panel on the top left. Jaggy af though the render resolution is 1080p.

Notice in this shot, the foliage looks fine:
But Noct's outline is a mess.

I have a theory it's related to the way they implement DOF, because in this shot:
the things in the distance look particularly bad.

If anything what is clear is that they try to insist on the universe, the setting of the story and the relation between Noctis and his father. I'm ok with that, but that's not what I'm waiting from a demo of a game that we are all waiting since 2006. Show me some FF, show me some magic, some intense fight, some killer cutscenes, some high and color characters... You can't ask me to be pleased about a piece of dream sequence, slow fighting and a clear lack of finition and details.

Yeah sure, a section from the actual game would have been much better received, no idea why they went with this, maybe it was already done? Maybe they just felt about experimenting?

Still, the trailer for the demo opens up with A FUN AND FREE FFXV, someone could always play the "they told you beforehand"-card.

Watching the e3 2013 combat trailer the Iron giant hardly flinched when Noctis I attacked him since I saw some folks saying they didn't feel their attacks hit hard. I'll say this controlling armiger seems a bit difficult at the moment hopefully they tweak that.

This was revealed in the ATR at the end of January. Heck the demo has options to allow the player to change time of day/weather etc.

The demo is also an "old build" and not what the retail version will be. This is not a Beta FFS =/

.

A build number is the best bet to find out how old it is and even that may not be accurate. Most studios have different ways of coming up with build numbers. Some use actual dates.
With that being said, you'd probably have to go into a debug version to get it anyway.

Just wait until the game releases and pray the perf is better.

Yea i think thats supposed to be the point, it is a boss after all too. Same happened in episode duscae it took alot to flinch bigger enemies

I played this for about 5 minutes and shut it off. The game looks terrible and the animations are garbage. The animations made it look like a port of a PS2 game or something. Combat was pretty bad too.

There are very few games with animations as good as FFXV's, though.

Wouldn't be gaf without hyperbole. Is it hard for people to just simply go "meh i didn't like, doesn't look as good as expected and the combat wasn't to my liking"?

Pretty sure this demo turned me sour on the game. Didn't enjoy the combat in the boss segment, the movement in the game is too tank-like for my tastes and the performance had me completely appalled. Everything else was overall just a drag and the lightning effects are so shoddily done that at times I can't see shit due to how dark it is.

Demo or not I don't think releasing this was a good move. It feels like a poor, confusing effort overall.

you should probably quit gaming then as you probably won't be satisfied by the animation in most other games

Dark Side Phil is that you? I really don't understand these comments, oh well. Installing the demo now. Hope you're wrong (I know the hyperbole is so real here).

Overall, very underwhelming demo. The kid part, which makes up most of the demo, is so dull. The boss fight as adult Noctis is quite fun though. Which has me excited for the full game as that will be what you'll be playing.

One?

The Division looks way better
Tomb Raider looks better
MGSV looks better
Bloodborne looks better
The Order looks way better
FarCry Primal looks better

BTW The Witcher 3 is way better

I can go on... what looks good in FFXV?

The environments and The creatures look phenomenal in the game. Almost everything looks amazing to me. The hair is the weirdest thing, and I still don't find this bad looking. How do you guys okay games if FFXV looks awful? Not rhetorical, I'm genuinely curious. Every time I see a trailer or some scenes from the demo I just go "wow". Witcher 3 made men do that quite a few times as well, but far cry and bloodborne(while I love the designs and aesthetic) didn't really do that for me.

Ultimately, I guess we'll agree to disagree. It a a very beautiful game imo though.

Top of citadel warp attack is awesome, though I biffed it once and took massive fall damage.

Haha same. I think I was trying to get the weapons on the platform and missed the platform and just fell all the way down. Got to see the animation where he takes a lot of fall damage though, and that was neat :)

Controls are sluggish and the performance is awful. Attacks don't feel like they have any impact. I will probably pass on the console version... maybe the PC version will be better.

I think the hyperbole about this demo is out of control. I just finished it and it's a nice tech demo that just gives you the smallest taste of what the environments and lighting are going to be like. The whining about the frame rate and graphics is way, way out of proportion.

Square/Enix would have done well to market this as a tech demo and not representative of the experience as a whole, though.

Honestly if you step off gaf its a different tone about the demo from what I've read

That accounts for most of the demo, but are we all just ignoring the fight at the end?

Is it ok if people can call that crappy based on what they played?

It's just a tech demo, man. You're supposed to see some big guy swinging a big sword. They don't give you many abilities and he's not all that strong. It's just a basic thing in a generic arena. I think they totally biffed it by not explicitly calling this out for what it is - just a showcase for the environmental and lighting effects and *very* light combat.

Lots of discussion of it earlier in the thread. I found it quite nice once I got used to the updated controls. Perfect dodges, warp-strike into air combo, staggering giant with shield, shuriken attacks, all felt good and responsive.

But no question it needs a tutorial or something, particularly for people who didn't play Duscae.

And of course it's not going to be for everyone.

Do we know if this demo is only for a limited time? Won't be around my PS4 until May, and would like to try it out then.

pretty sure it'd altleast stay up until launch so you'd be good

they haven't said anything so I dont think it'd dissapear quickly

You should be able to buy it on the webstore and then unless SE nukes it a la PT (which I doubt they will do) even if it's delisted you'll be able to download it when you get to your PS4.

Actually that's exactly what Tabata said it was.

You can fight a stronger version of the knight as well that presents a bit more of a challenge. To be fair, they also called it a tech demo, which is what it is.
