Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

The VG Tech people put it though a framerate analysis. They are not exactly digital foundry but you know... worth a look to confirm what was already obvious.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8nr5iSbVFk

Framerate drops like everyone mentioned with a bunch of frame pacing as well went its at 30fps. I guessed it had frame pacing problems from the demo so if that turns out true hey! I guessed something right!

Wait for DF to do its thing to confirm.

I am more curious about the resolution. Its a very soft looking game but I cant tell if its just because of some kind of filter or if its 900p + filters.

That was CG wasn't it?

This is what it looks like now in-game:
Yowpeta.jpg

Edit: oops thats massive let me resize

I never expected it to look like the CG. It's nearly impossible to achieve that. I set my expectations for that a long time ago. Even at E3 2013, the city streets looked really bad.

But the actual in game version far surpasses my expectations.

Like, this is an actual town we'll be able to explore in a video game. I can't think of one as imaginative and beautiful as this.

Just finished the demo and wow it was bad. Dodge mechanic is wonky, melee lacks any impact and to top it off performance sucks. Not a good impression.

The demo in terms of looks......looks even a step back from all the trailer material they just showed. This feels like the battle demo they showed us last year and they used it and slapped kid noctis in it for a quick story with little effort. I highly doubt they wanted to waste a lot of resources optimizing it. It looks like an old build despite GameSpot saying that it was supposed to shoe the games final visuals. I still say this is a build from last year and was used internally as a tech demo and to test systems for awhile and they decided to retool it as a public demo.

I enjoyed the tech demo aspects (weather, time of day, etc), but the climax, wow. Combat felt kinda shitty the whole time, but that boss fight definitely instilled no confidence. I couldn't Dodge anything, didn't really even understand what it wanted me to do. So I spammed fire and killed it. That was after trying a bunch of melee

As it stands the atmosphere is great, but that combat did nothing for me

Even if the framerate isn't stable, their engine shows a lot of wonderful stuff. I really enjoyed the Episode Duscae, and even more after the 2.0 was released.

So far, I'm confident in the game and already pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition, the release date is far from us but it will let them time to polish the game.

I say this as someone who is not a pixel-counting 60fps purist: The framerate in this demo is a problem.

It so diminishes the graphical impact, that it would be more visually appealing with less complexity and a stable framerate. It doesn't come across as a great looking game at all, even though it's technically doing amazing things that probably look cool in still screenshots.

I've seen demos with unacceptable framerate that went on to be okay in the final game (anyone remember the XIII-2 demo?). Hopefully the final XV is the same.

Would be a damn shame if the final PS4 game runs like this. I'm sure it will look good on PS4k, PC and future platforms, but it completely undermines the effort spent on ultra high-fidelity assets if it launches like this. It will lose its claim to being a graphical powerhouse franchise if it doesn't come out the gate looking great.

Might have been a mistake to develop in an idealized super-high-spec PC environment and then downport to current machines....

As someone who was on the fence about this (never really played an action JRPG), this demo did a good job on convincing me to buy FFXV when it drops. Graphics weren't great, but I expect the full game will have some more impressive moments.

As my first final fantasy, I was pretty excited since they were what I thought was moving to a more of a DMC type combat...but yeezus it's just so bad and boring. Why only use one button for attacking??

Have you ever played kingdom hearts? The variety comes from new abilities and weapons.

I'm so confused how you can be positive about this demo. It was pretty awful. And what is with this crap of, "the combat was fun!", you hold circle. Like literally hold circle. I'm so confused.

The hair was nice and I am excited for Kingdom Hearts now, but this has me worried. This is by far the worse thing I've played on my PS4 thus far.

I ignored the "holding button" thing, because if you individually press the buttons, it plays more like kingdom hearts, and I noticed I had more combo animations for the toy sword than if I just held it down.

My one complaint: let me switch Circle and Square. I kept pushing Circle to dodge and Square to attack by muscle memory but it was the other way around!

If you're playing on PS4 you can reconfigure your button layout in the options somewhere. It will change it for every square or circle action in game though, not just battle.

Iv'e never understood why most games don't allow for complete controller remapping.

It's just a demo the game isn't coming it tomorrow....it's not like they cannot change or polish anything at this point. I'll save my reservations for the final game

Here's another good one. There's a Perfect Shield mechanic where you can stun the enemy if you Shield at right time. Doing aerial combos using a shuriken and then switching to sword to finish it off is really cool.

There are a lot more options in the new build. Fully on board with this direction.

Look how dope shit is man square dropped the ball with not giving proper tutorial to people who dont want to spend time figuring stuff out.

Also cant fathom people saying weapon feedback isnt good cause thats one thing they nailed perfectly.

Yup, definitely could have used a tutorial. There are a bunch of nice perfect-dodges at the end of that video too.

My girlfriend cried during the title screen music

She's new to FF.

I guess this means the music is good lol

You are talking like the game looks like that all the time, and it DOESN'T.
I seriously don't get people, and they buy much less ambitious tittles and complain 0 about them, but when we talk about FFXV, which yes, has variable IQ, they won't stop complaining.

I'm the first one to say that such a thing is wrong since Duscae's been released, but from what i've seen in this demo the game is still impressive, not only because of the visuals but the little nice touchs which makes this games much more alive than almost anything that's been released; only only because of the character's animations; but because of the animations of objects and much more things.

If we focus so much in the dithering of the character's hair, which is still greatly done and much better than the balds & overcut hair, and in the textures of really distant objets, we're doing wrong as gamers. IMO.

Even the FPS isn't really annoying, yes, it's hard for the game to sustain 30 fps, but we didn't get a single FPS drop that makes things unbereable, and they got time to adress this.

Why can't we just enjoy the good things and stop focusing in the tiny (yes, they are) details, it's beyond my comprehension.

No, I NEVER said it looks like that the ENTIRE TIME.

I just posted some bad images in reply to the comments of "I dont get why people complain when the game looks sooo fantastic!".

There is a huge difference in that.

And excuse me, but this game has some pretty mediocre graphics in comparison to other games we have seen this gen. Those waterfalls aint gonna look better no matter what screen shot you try to take. Those textures and shadows wont be better either.

The game looks sub par and that is a fact for someone who isnt biased and has a good pair of eyes.

I dont know if it is representative of the final product but this tech demo doesnt do anything for me. Apart from the good lighting it has little to impress me in relation to the hype built around with videos and demos they have shown me before, like the Environmental Video.

I've gotta agree that the graphics and framerate are a huge step backwards. It's stuck somewhere in between PS3 and PS4, closer to PS3 in many cases...

It really begs the question, how did S-E go from Duscae to this?

And really after I let the experience 'sink in' per se, I'm kind of turned off that after 10 years, this is the free standalone demo? Really? That's insulting. It's extremely poor. 90% of the time you are running around with toy weapons beating on enemies who are no better than scenery and step on buttons that change the weather. Right.

It's quite laughable that they would then ask you to pre-order the game right after playing the demo. If they're going to sell me on a game that isn't even out yet, they will have to try much, much harder to showcase why FFXV is a game worth pre-ordering. This Platinum demo is a joke.

My expectations for this game have once again been lowered from cautiously optimistic to preparing for the worst.

There is so much amazing game music that unfortunately won't reach ever reach the masses, a real shame :(

As a side note, how does your GF feel about you playing Dark Souls 3 for 140 hours already lol

She's the fucking best - she's encouraging my "behavior" because she understands how much gaming as a whole means to me. Also, she watched me session through both Bloodborne AND Dark Souls 3. She's a fucking trooper, managing to stay up for 40+ hours one night during BB.

You should watch some Uncharted 4 gifs :).

U4 is obviously impressive visually, but the animation bothers me - weird mix of hyper-realistic mo-cap and animation that is very uncanny valley to me. Movement in XV may have less verisimilitude (it's a little cartoony), but I believe it's more coherent and thus less unsettling.

I don't really understand why people are moaning and being hugely over critical of a DEMO.

To say it's sub par is absurd to be honest, what are people saying is par when taking in to context that this is a demo. You can't fairly compare it to a finished game.

I enjoyed the battle system, yeah it can be 'just hold circle' but it can also be lots more. You could do that in most FFs. You could just hold X and your party would just do their basic default attack. If you CHOOSE, you can take time and learn more about the battle system and how it works and try to use it to the best effect.

If you try to look for graphical errors, or low res textures, low poly models in areas you'll never get access to etc... Then sure, you're absolutely going to find them, in any game. Yes even full games that are completed. The devs only have a limited amount of resources available to them, and if they're going for a huge open expanse full of dynamic lighting and weather effects then yeah, expect them to cut corners.

I enjoyed the demo for what it was. I was just disappointed at how short it was. I was expecting something longer than Duscae and have more story content than it did, but it didn't. You know what, I'm fine with that. I've played through it twice so far and will probably play it again. There is definitely some magic and weapons I missed.

My biggest concern honestly for this game atm is the gameplay. Maybe a tutorial or a guide will help me see how the gameplay can be better, but I don't really understand defending, especially in mid-air. Attacking is alright, I think what a comment said on here about not having a finisher may be what it is lacking. I know for kid noctis, I treated the hammer hit as a finisher, but not sure it's the case for Adult Noctis, have to do some experimenting with it.

Other than that, a lot of the game is reminding me of KH, which is perfect for me, exactly what I wanted. A more "mature KH". Music definitely and what great music it is. Graphical problems...I think people are reaching here tbh. They're picking on low LOD models. The waterfall is perhaps lower quality than I'd hope, but I think it'd look better in motion. Most of the game seems really good graphically to me, biggest nitpick for me is the AA used, if any.

Maybe i have been spoiled by mgsv in terms of image quality. Looking at the screen shots and gifs here it looks amazing but trying the demo on full screen tv damn . very low res... Its ok in motion the animation is great specially the hair of noct while running. I hope buildings and structures have interaction in the main game not just like a wallpaper pasted to hide the corridors. And after playing the demo it ask you "would you pre order the game?" And a i smiled and said "nope". They need a better demo to convince people in pre ordering lol.

dude, 40 hours isn't one night. remember to sleep! gaming is better when your mind is clear.

Waterfalls were the one thing that bothered me a bit (I'm not very sensitive to frame pacing issues, though I certainly get why they bother people).

They're the thing that really gives Altissia its unique character, a whole city built into a giant series of waterfalls, but as textured now they have very low visual contrast. They don't pop, so if you're not looking directly at them you almost don't notice they're there.

Everything else I thought looked great.

The music is the best thing about it so far, I hope we still get the song used in the Versus XIII trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6At_bb1PNU I assumed this was the theme song until they used Stand by me.

I was never keen on XIII music, there were a few stand out tracks, but mostly it was very samey. I like everything I have heard of XV.

I think Somnus is still in. I mean an instrumental version was Duscae's menu music, iirc. I just think now we're getting a bit more variety rather than every bit of footage having Gratia Mundi/Somnus. Even though they are awesome and Shimomura is the godess.

Episode Duscae had an instrumental version so you are probably in luck.

That's good, with all of the changes since the initial reveal I wasn't sure if it had been dropped. I'm glad it's still in there.

I still think it's impressive they've reached that and I certainly was not disappointed playing the demo :-)

That's still impressive. I wonder, the demo version of the city could have been taken from an older build, given that its totally seperate from the final game.

Played this last night. I'm sure others have probably felt the same, but I had huge Kingdom Hearts vibes from this, which is great.

Too bad it still feels like a game that was built using Unity or something though. So many performance issues.

Yeah, kid Noctis part has strong KH vibes, but I don't really think that's indicative of the final game at all.

I played the demo about 20 minutes or so before it crashed, I won't start it over right now... I may give it another go before the game releases to unlock the summon.

But it feels so much like an early concept tech demo... feels like something that would have existed long long before Episode Duscae... showing off various parts of the engine, rather than saying "this is a taste of the final game"... the final game will be nothing like this. It won't be running around picking up Mario coins... it won't be triggering sudden shifts in time just for the heck of it... etc.

Poor performance indeed. They should have not showed such a "demo". Trailers and anime were great though. Pre-ordering on PSN gives custom theme, right? How does it look?
