Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

I played the demo about 20 minutes or so before it crashed, I won't start it over right now... I may give it another go before the game releases to unlock the summon.

But it feels so much like an early concept tech demo... feels like something that would have existed long long before Episode Duscae... showing off various parts of the engine, rather than saying "this is a taste of the final game"... the final game will be nothing like this. It won't be running around picking up Mario coins... it won't be triggering sudden shifts in time just for the heck of it... etc.

Yeah, that aspect of it made little sense to me. I like the tech demo stuff, and I like the final battle, but adding in elements that don't do much of anything (like the crystal things) is just confusing. And I'm not sure I understand why it's meant to be a taste of the final game's combat and magic systems when there's only the most basic of attacks and no other party members.

Ehm, that´s really a non-issue, and not even worth mentioning at all.

No, this is a HUGE issue...seriously. If they leave crap like that in the demo, which is nothing more than a tech-demo to show off the weather system, weapon effects etc and is in now way representative of the final product, how will the actual game look like?

/sarcasm

People have been making mountains out of mole hills unfortunately, I'm sure that FFXV will run well and look splendid.

While playing the demo, I got a message like, "limit break" not allow on this zone. I got a bit out of the fight, but then I got back to the stage.

What summon?

The feeling I had when it asked if I wanted to purchase the game at the end of the demo was sort of like when, as a musician, you watch a friend's band play something pretty shitty and then they come directly up to you and ask, "what'd ya think?" and you just want to do your best to be nice.

I would've loved to see a "press [] to preorder, press + hold [] to preorder deluxe edition"

if that room is even in the real game it's probably actual human size so you would never even notice it :P

Might explain the slightly blurry magazine covers too. If it were further away I'd imagine those would look very sharp.

Anyhow, did some more testing. 999 is the limit of crystals you can collect, and no, it doesn't give you anything special. Accidentally stumbled into a plate where soccer balls appeared, interestingly.

Also, if you stand around in Altissa for a while, Carbuncle talks about some more dad relationship backstory. Might upload that later on.

Getting all the 4 weapons certainly did a lot for the gameplay for me. The combos of warp attacking, air shuriken attacks and stun blocking with the shield before unleashing the huge sword was satisfying, as well as using the environment. Screw holding the attack button though, pressing/mashing all the way.

I got the soccer plate. was super excited but then they all disappeared after i hit them. I pushed one running only for it to fall through the floor. =\

Not a fan of the rubber band combat but at least they fixed the lock on

I only found 380 crystals. did I miss a few rooms or something?

The LoD is fantastic. When you're in the room with toys, if you look up at the marble fixtures and doors across the room as you run toward them, they have so many layers of detail and the transitions are so smooth and natural looking. No awkward pops over change of overall look. Their artists and tech people really did great work on that.

It would seem Carbuncle will be a summon you automatically have in FFXV for having played the demo.

That said, no idea what he does. The "Ruby Light" thing happened but I have no idea what it did.

I've had the ruby light heal me all the way. Other times it might have been a stealth buff.

As I said before, you get them from enemies too. There are two areas in the town portion that spawn them, as well as an unlockable plate just before the final corridor. You can also gain a Meteorrain from an adjacent plate which oneshots everything on screen.

The room also has a hidden Meteorrain plate too. In a corner with with the magazines (the one where you can go into a "tunnel") there are two small wooden blocks you can move to reveal that plate. You need to collect 250 first (Gold Plate requirement) to get to that. Since you basically have to kill everything to get that much crystals, the Meteorrain doesn't have much point in that room anyway.

i remembered this when playing

I never had a chance to play Duscae and I've actually managed to avoid most of the media for the game so far as I wanted to go into the final game relatively free of expectations. I haven't played a full FF game in a looooong time, mostly because none of the modern iterations have captured my interest.

That being said, I buckled and got the Platinum Demo. I played through it this morning, and I gotta' say... I really, really hope this isn't representative of the final game. I know people define the term "demo" in different ways, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this was primarily a tech demo.

Because if it is actually demonstrative of the final game, I am seriously disappointed. I've watched the videos in this post about what can be done with the fighting system, but in my playthrough, I literally just held O. I think I might have switched weapons once, because I realized the hammer only took 3 hits to kill the 100th damn nightmare thing instead of 20 that the sword took, which means I could move on from just holding O again. The Iron Giant was... better, I guess. Although I missed with my fire spell (which I could only use once, I guess?), and did the warp attack thing a few times, but then couldn't do again for some reason? I was confused as hell with the combat system and just ended up pressing O until the Giant died.

The rest of the demo felt like a big, 3D Mario level. It was platforming, plain and simple. Exploration took forever because you moved like a sloth, and the only reward were crystals that I'm assuming will have a purpose in the final game. I tried the circle things on the ground, which... uhhh... did something. Maybe turned it into nighttime? Set off a timer for.... something? I can understand generally avoiding too much hand holding in a final game, but a demo shouldn't leave you this clueless of the world around you. Was there a tutorial somewhere that I missed?

I literally laughed out loud when it asked the "Do you want to order the full game now?" question at the end. I could not fathom how someone could play that demo and think, "DAMN! I have to order this right now!"

Again, I didn't play Duscae, so maybe if you played that and this demo they compliment each other so you can put together a solid picture of what the final game will look like. But going by just this demo, I am far from impressed.

That being said, I'm genuinely happy for everyone else that seemed to enjoy this.

Did you try sprinting with L3 (if you were on PS4)? They made the Playroom really big for sone reason, though you can transform into a car which is much faster.

Also I agree it reminded me of Alice and 3D Mario.

So I gave the demo another go with shuriken and shield. Why the fuck were they hidden? Both of these weapons are more fun to play with than the standards swords. Air warping combo, switching weapons mid-air are all nice and dandy, but I just wish there are more reward/consequence for your technical play. For instance, warping to the sides of the Iron Giants and break its giant sword to weaken its melee strike, warp to its face, attack its eyes to blind it, just some interactions with the monster.

I remember Tabata saying in the final game we can break certain enemy body parts, would have been nice if that were in this demo. Right now, it's just one big block of damage sponge.

Duscae was a completely different experience.

This as you pointed out is a demo. Its not even part of the game even tho they use assets and locations to showcase weather, day and night cycle and combat.

I came out of this demo scratching my head. But i am still hopeful the game will be awesome. I also expect a PC release to brute force past a lot of the technical issues like the big frame drops, no shadows, blurry textures and popin everywhere, and maybe add real time reflections.

I felt pretty much the same way after the demo. I get that the technical issues can be resolved, and the non-combat gameplay isn't representative of the final game, but the adult Noctis combat felt really clunky and didn't click at all. I'm pretty sure they said that version of combat was final so I'm concerned. I would still like to see how it feels with a full party to manage.

I did try sprint, but I honestly couldn't tell the difference. I pushed the button a few times to make sure it didn't somehow miss my input before I realized that the "sprint" was barely faster than the run. So I went from sloth to slug. The car transformation was better, but I just couldn't do it without shaking my head. I was transforming into... a car? So that I could traverse a room to climb up a fork and knock over building blocks? I mean... this was a FF game, right?

Well, this is good to hear. I wish I had Duscae as a reference point, so maybe I will try and watch some videos of that for comparison and get my expectations back in line.

Agreed. I can see from the videos linked in this post that I obviously did not explore the combat enough, but I also had no reason to. Holding O did the trick and as far as I could tell, none of the enemies ever landed a hit against me outside of the Iron Giant. I'm definitely interested to see how a full party impacts things. (Love the screen name, btw.)

Its basically a pure tech demo. It is pretty weird. I can think of a single big game which has had a demo like this.

I played the demo again and got everything and I am still not impressed with the combat. I can do everything and the combat seems a bit better than my initial playthrough. I just don't find it fun. It is not like Turn based or ATB is fun either but at least there is some strategy element to the boss battles. I am not getting that from this demo. It is just flashy garbage. After XIII I am not even a bit surprised.

Once again, they clearly needed a tutorial (especially for people who haven't played Duscae).

You can re-up your fire spell during the fight w/ panels to the left and right of the stairs. Need to cast when giant isn't moving because it's area, won't track him.

Warp attack drains MP (the blue bar under HP). When you run out, you can't warp. You can recover MP w/ big sword strikes, or most easily by warping to a highpoint (lampposts, on building) and just hanging for a moment. This also lets you attack giant from above with a warp strike (got to target him then HOLD triangle not just tap). Does massive damage from top of skyscraper.

Can also combo warp attacks (again hold triangle when targeting him, tap just does a short directional wrap) into aerial strikes, and you can move noctis around while attacking in air, even back to dodge. This uses MP though I believe.

Holding square puts you in autododge mode but uses MP. Perfectly timed square during a strike negates damage for no MP cost.

If you're equipped w/ the shield (get it from the ledge on the skyscraper, have to drop down from above), blocks can stagger giant.

A lot more too, actually, but yeah, fairly involved for giving people no clues how it works.

Man, I wish I had read this before I played this morning. All of this sounds great or, at least, a lot more interesting than what the game presents you with. Thanks for the summary. It's not inspiring me to try the demo again, but it at least gives me more hope for the final game's combat.

Sure -- mind you there are still some rough edges, even if you're playing w/ all the tools. It's hard to figure out the timing on perfect dodge for giant, a lot of noctis' attacks seem hard to cancel out of for dodging, and the magic seems too finicky. Also doesn't have abilities that the final game should (a separate type of magic for Noctis tied to his royal lineage, team attacks, likely a bunch of armiger-related skills that were hinted at in Duscae, different weapons, possibly weapon-specific skills (like jump w/ a speark, also in Duscae), etc.).

In my mind, MP runs out a bit too quickly as well given how much relies on it.

I just wish attacks didnt snap to the target. Just let me manually control my character.
This is actually my biggest gripe by far. It takes a really simplistic battle system and makes it completely mindless, as long as attacks auto target. I don't remember Duscae having auto target with weapons. Am I misremembering?

I think you're right. When armiger is active in Duscae, you auto warp to attack (which, if you're close to enemy in Platinum, is basically what happens), which felt very different from normal battle. I'd have to go back and check though.

Yes, Duscae had auto targeting

Maybe it's different and it moves you forward before attacking now but Duscae would always try to magnetise you towards enemies if you were attacking

Can anybody tell me how each weapon does its own super combo? I have no idea what they're actually called, but sometimes I unleash an attack that isn't part of the usual 1-2-3 combo.

For example, when I switch to the buster sword, sometimes I see Noctis charging up. I'm not sure how I initiate that. And then I saw a video of some guy doing an irregular combo with the regular sword. I'm assuming the shield and shurikens have their own specials?

How do you do these things?

On a sidenote, I see some comments about people using magic as adult Noctis. Am I missing how to use magic or are people just talking about that fire bomb item? And is it true that the only way to get the Iron Giant to begin a QTE, is to dodge an attack first?? And why is it only sometimes Noctis finishes that QTE with a fire attack??

so what secrets have been found? this MUST have secrets. Duscae had tons.
I know there's 2 the 2 secret weapons. and a more powerful boss..anything else?

My biggest gripe with the combat, after trying it out for longer, is the fact that noctis now REALLY homes in on the target, Back in the day he would lunge towards them, but still, ultimately swing if he wasn't close enough and whif. Now he works like Semi-auto in Tales games, running into range... and guess what, I NEVER PLAY SEMI-AUTO IN TALES GAMES IT"S AWFUL! Manual all the way. PLS, take lesson from bamco and make it togglable.

As I said before, you get them from enemies too. There are two areas in the town portion that spawn them, as well as an unlockable plate just before the final corridor. You can also gain a Meteorrain from an adjacent plate which oneshots everything on screen.
Ah, so you just keep spamming enemy resets. Yeah with the plate that keeps giving you 5 of every spell and then the enemy reset (you can kill all but like 4 enemies in the level with a well placed meteorrain) it's pretty simple, but very repetitive.

But I have gotten Lulu's ultimate weapon in FFX.

Did I download the same demo on PS4? I had maybe 2 stutters the entire 40 minutes or so that I played. It's like night and day compared to the first version of the Duscae demo. Massive KH vibes, like others have said, which is really good. Question though (slight spoilers):
Are there more plates like the soccerball-spawning plate in the last area? Just want to know if there's more story stuff, I found it really well done

soccer ball?!
not seen that!

there's the 2 hidden weapon plates, the magic ones, the leviathan summon that appears then goes away..

Wish the demo would let you just skip to the arena portion from the main menu after beating it once. Hate having to trudge through 15 minutes of tech demo each time I want to mess around with the battle system.
