Wkd BO 03•25-27•16 - Batman vs Superman (or Grindr hookup gone sideways) bests Bunny

Thank God on that drop. This has to be worrying to WB, because while everyone was going to see a Batman/Superman movie, this bodes poorly for all the rest of the movies going forward.

BvS isn't a movie thats made for repeat viewings ESPECIALLY with kids. Barely meeting expectations has got to be causing some tension and I bet we'll start seeing some changes coming down the pike.

Shit, I bet theyre really freaking out about Suicide Squad right now.

Which is funny because one of the first things my kid said to me coming out of BvS was that Suicide Squad looks really cool and she can't wait to see it. I told her not to get her hopes up, they might be going for an 'R' rating on that one.

People seem to think that Batfleck is immune to any performance issues the film has but everything else is fucked. That seems weird to me. I mean, let's consider the facts.

- The other DC movies have different directors, concepts, and the characters don't really have anything to do with BvS directly.

- Batman, and Ben Affleck's version of the character, is directly tied to BvS and is defined by that movie.

- If Warner is going to have some sort of kneejerk reaction to BvS underperforming, wouldn't it make more sense for them to put double-dipping on Batfleck on ice rather than the other films which might have a chance of succeeding on their own?

- If the reception to the movie is so poor that people want to distance themselves from BvS completely, would Ben Affleck still want to direct and star in movies tied to the same character? Wouldn't he have better things to do?

Affeck as a writer and a director has a strong record with WB and would be considered the safe pick for getting the DCCU universe back on track and will also follow the Nolan formula of "superheroes in a Michael Mann style film". Also Affleck the actor as Batman is viewed as the consensus best thing about BvS.

In all honesty I wouldn't be surprised if it was more successful this BvS. In fact, I'd be willing to wager.

Suicide Squad looks like it may be the DCU's saving grace. Looks like a more straightforward action pic with quips etc that will do well. It's also going to get people more hyped about Batman.

Then its Wonder Woman, and people like her, and Justice League, which surely will get people excited.

I don't think they should panic.

bout to use my time machine to tell people a R-rated Deadpool movie that didn't open in 3D/IMAX screens was a bigger domestic hit than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's absolutely surreal. Everyone would have called you crazy. I would have called you crazy, and I read the leaked Deadpool script and fought for that movie to be made for years.

And yet... here we are.

I feel like I'm in another dimension or something.

I really hope Suicide Squad is a great flick and becomes a success, but I am also glad BvS does not do well, as I most certainly expect (and want) better Batman films than what I got.

You'll get better regardless. It's not like filmmakers and studios want to make bad movies.

*transformers always being the exception.

WB is going to append a "Superman has to go back to his home planet now" scene to the end of the BD release so they can reboot Superman without rebooting everything else.

Superman died on the way back to his home planet.

Ending spoilers:
They closed the casket with Kryptonite nails, Superman can't get out.

Man, I hate how Transformers gives fuel to the "box office doesn't equal quality" argument. Of course it doesn't but people always point to the Transformers franchise as a way of putting down other movies, like it somehow proves that rule for every blockbuster they happen to not like.

Damn you, Michael Bay.

Yeah, but it's a really good example, though. Like, the extreme gulf between the film's quality and the money it makes is close to obscene. People are gonna use obscenities as shorthand for strong feelings.

It's the box-office equivalent of tourettes, really.

Might wanna check that though, domestically, I believe it's dropping from version to version.

The growth overseas in gross is what's fueling that franchise.

Its just incredible how a movie with Superman and Batman in it looks like it is going to be a Bomb at the box office.

I just hope moving forward they just don't try and copy the MArvel formula to sell tickets, I right now like how MCU and DCU have their distinctive formula, I like Marvel goofy light tone, while I like DCs dark and gritty tone.

So much for the audiences will love it. Toxic WOM has destroyed legs. Same shit will happen with Justice League next year. It's time to start making some changes.

But it's true. Hey, I'm a sucker for Bay and his spectacles! But call a spade a spade. No modern blockbuster I can think of is immune to the critics as this series.

The second did close to 100M more then the first dom. I swear to you it's true.

It's just a trainwreck of a number. I'm not sure there's a better way of putting it; it'll undoubtedly drop at least 70% and there's no one that will be seeing that as a positive result.

I think there are many other films and franchises that do the same, which was my point a few pages back (twilight, for example?). I think the type of film BvS is (serious, dark, philosophical) makes it's financial success more vulrenable to critics than something like Transformers.

I hope WB holds the line, DC shouldn't ape the MCU formula. Our only hope is Tarzan dies box office wise so badly it makes BvS look gold.

Fri: $15.35M
Sat: $22.3M +45%
Sun: $15.6M -30%
W/E: $54.25M

Those are very generous figures for Saturday and Sunday, and still result in a Watchmen-like 67.3% drop. In reality, I think we'll see something more like this:

Fri: $15.35M
Sat: $20.7M +35%
Sun: $12.6M -39%
W/E: $48.65M

Basically, I agree with boxoffice.com's projection.

Critics don't mean a thing and there's a huge disconnect between them and audiences for this movie.

70% drop.

OK.gif

WB please get Snyder outta there.

I agree, I love MCU but I do not want to see DC to go that route at all (in terms of tone). And I do not feel that is the way to success either. But BvS is clearly not the way to go and start your massive blockbuster franchise.

Critics don't mean a thing and there's a huge disconnect between them and audiences for this movie..

If there is such a big disconnect, why are people not going to the cinema for this film, then? Word of mouth isn't exactly doing BvS any favours thus far.

"Saying critics dont matter cuz BvS made a bunch of money 1st weekend is like saying dentists don't matter cuz candy sales spike on Halloween"

That shit still has no nutritional value and rots out ya teeth fam. And next weekend you're fuckin sick of candy and cant wait to get rid of it
