Dark Souls III Review Thread

Polygon also mentions that the PS4 code they tested is a "complete technical mess"...

Don't know how they tested, but they are the only ones so far mentioning this so far.

Jim also mentioned PS4 technical problem. Don't know if "complete technical mess" is right word because darkx10 said DS3 was at least on par with BB in term of technical.

I'm torn between PC and console and...
I just read two reviews: one says framerate on console is unstable, the other says PC version has highs and lows.

The summary at the score isn't very spoilery - here

Seems like the same complaints some people here have regarding the "connected world" of 2. Not a very important factor for me personally, but if you like opening door in area A and having it connect to area C then maybe you'll be bummed.

No sorry Polygon, I'm not joining you. You're wrong.

pc has patches and mods though

I'm going PC also for the $60 deluxe editions. Even with GCU standard is $3 cheaper in BST.

Jim Sterling also mentioned frame rate drops on PS4, From are not really good at all the technical aspect :/

They weren't surprised enough and were mad that you didn't go up an elevator through the bottom of a volcano that wasn't there before. They also don't think there are enough secrets.

Yup. It's leagues better than Dark Souls 2 in this aspect at least, I'd say around Bloodborne's level.

If its BB level thats great. That game has wonderful individual level design. I dont think anything they do will be able to top Dark Souls 1's overall world design though, and im okay with that.

Huh...this runs counter to what most say about the game's levels being the most sprawling and littered with shorcuts in the series.

There are many shortcuts as far I've seen.

I think Dark Souls 1 being able to go into undead burg / catacombs / new londo / drake valley / blighttown depth area from the starting bonfire cursed the series since so many people now think everything else pales in comparison.

Fucking Master Key!

I always loved the idea of Dark Souls but ended up hating the slow speed. The footage I've seen so far looks absolutely amazing and just like I always pictured these games in my head, if that makes sense.

So this looks weirdly fresh for me, even though it is supposed to be so familiar.

Did you give Bloodborne a shot? That game is all about speed.

The review actually mentions that it's basically the opposite of DS2 in world design.

Yeah, that Master Key stuff is why I don't think the first game will ever be truly topped. This is a wortht sequel though from what I've played.

PC was ok for awhile, I covered some areas in my review. Basically some parts of the swamp absolutely became almost unplayable at 18 frames per second on a 980gtx. Then would go back up. Too many alphas, long draw distance, and lots of particles and reflections.

They must have played the game offline. It's a glitch that's fixed with Ver 1.02 patch.

In this one can see why Miyazaki has repeatedly described Dark Souls 3 as the final outing for Souls in its current form; in places this feels like his greatest hits package. There’s plenty new and memorable on offer, but this title is also absolutely happy to remind you of the glories past with a wink and a nudge. It’s meant to be the ultimate Souls experience, a solid blend of everything that came before, and in that it succeeds. It’s not breaking new ground, but it’ll certainly scratch the itch many have been feeling since the release of whatever their last favourite Souls was, as it has a little piece of all of them.

tbh it didn't even matter that much in ds1, and I lovely DS1. You weren't running from blightown to area X, minus to open the route

you always fast travel :/

I dunno, feels more important in concept than it actually is to gameplay.

Your phone cant copy and paste? how old and terrible is it? haha

Talking on phone? Maybe just doesn't want the extra effort? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm surprised Souls games continue to review as well as they do. They're absolutely fantastic and I'm day 1 on any of them, but they don't have huge changes between them that critics like to lap up.

Still nowhere near ready to do my review, but hoping to have it sometime this week. We (EGM) are a more console-focused outlet, and we just got console builds of the game late last week. Plus, I've never felt like the Souls games are the kind of thing you should rush through in order to review. I'm playing it the way I would if I weren't reviewing it, which is the way anyone reading my review would want to play it.

The one thing I'd say at this point is, on a technical level, this is a Souls game. Any longtime fans of the series should know what to expect from that.

I never, ever fast travelled in Dark Souls. I absolutely always ran from one place to another.

I'm really surprised by some of the critiques by my fellow reviewers. I don't see how the game doesn't have enough hidden or secret areas--this game is more opaque than even Bloodborne in that regard IMO.

My biggest issue with the game is it's more a love letter to all the Soulsborne than sequel. It caters to nostalgia for Dark Souls 1 and Demon's Souls A LOT. Some people love that, and it is cool. Personally though I think it takes away from the personality of the game.

EDIT: apparently even though my review is in the OP... I never to clarify that I reviewed it. lol

Don't understand why it's lower than Bloodborne

Well, BB felt fresh. Completely new setting and lore, a different design philosophy focused on agression and offense and new mechanics like the dash, gun parry, transforming weapons, regain, instant heal and charge attacks.

I think that's why Miyazaki calls it a day for DS for now. Too much familiarity creeping in.

Once you reach the high 80's low 90's anyways they might as well all be rated the same thing anyways.

Correct all it takes is a few points to change the aggregate score.

Also Demon's Souls was 89, Dark souls 1 89, Dark souls 2 91 and Bloodborne 92 in metacritic so it a high 80 score seems to be how these games score

What is this stuff about easy mode I keep reading?

I've been playing a PS4 review version and it does often drop frames very noticeably, a shame.

Lower than I hoped but expected. The formula being almost the same with the technical problems seems to drag the meta down quite a bit.

Anything from FROM that doesn't have terrible Charlie Dungeons (the pacing, not the bosses) will be a better game overall

Chalice dungeons are not mandatory tho.

Don't understand why it's lower than Bloodborne

Because BB is a great game that does many things better than DS?

The core began so solid from Demons and they havent truly fucked it up (came close with 2 imo) so they cant knock it. Souls design is just rock solid.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Feels 'fresh' coming off Bloodborne.

The XB1 performance is trash though, so many FPS dips. From really need to get a locked 30 on consoles. Their next title whatever it is should have longer in the oven than a year to get their tech sorted. I think it's fair game to start docking them points for tech issues after how much money the Souls series has now poured into their studio.

So it appears it's a high 8 (or near 9) then? Great. I wish I can get better with this type of games but I guess I'm too impatient.

Except the part where you *have* to warp into the Anor Londo section. Anor Londo is completely segregated from the Undead Burg/Forest/Izalith/Catacombs/Blighttown loop.

I dont mind the 30 fps, as a console player

Welp it doesn't sound like it does a good job of keeping even that.

Yep. Comparing aggregates of 5 pretty similar games that were also reviewed so similarly seems rather pointless. All it tells you is "this is a quality game." If you were seeing scores below 80 then there's something up, but at this high of a level it's all pretty much the same thing.
