Dark Souls III Review Thread

I actually liked Eleum Loyce from Dark Souls 2 more than that DS3 area or Cainhurst.

I liked the art in the DS3 area more, personally. Eleum Loyce during the snow storm was all white and grey, with low visibility and maze-like geometry. I
rithyll
felt more unique and had fantastic art surprises such as
the black knight room accessible from the sewer
.

The level design is leaps and bound better than any previous game in the series--as a whole anyways. Dark Souls 2 can't even remotely touch this game in that regard.

There's a Souls game for everyone.

I think DS3 is a LOT better than Bloodborne.

Demon's Souls is still the greatest though.

DS3=DS1 .... Demons > DS2 .....BB

lack of build variety/weapons ... linear first few hours really hurt BB

In probably the first 2-3 hours of DS3 you find more weapons/spells then the entirety of bloodborne.

I switched to an alt account to ditch my embarrassing tag so I could be an embarrassing Naughty Dog fanboy in peace. Ask me anything!
Having beaten both games, it isn't as good as BB.

That's okay. Is it better than DS2? Also how does the level design and enemy design, atmosphere etccc compare?

For newcomers to the franchise, Dark Souls III will be a brutal journey where you’ll die over and over again to learn and understand what’s required in order to progress just that little bit further. For veterans familiar with Dark Souls’ design, you’ll also have a similar punishing ride. After completing it, I thought about my experience and whether or not I found things too easy – because, honestly, that was something on my mind the entire time. I went in having knowledge of its fundamentals and mechanics, and that’s not something I can change. I’ve been through dozens of hours learning from previous games, but when I look down at my “You Died” counter — which I recorded on paper every time my character was slain – I see 140 notches lined up across the page. I guess, then, I don’t think I can say my time with Dark Souls III was easy.

This thread is like the previews to the main event, the Uncharted 4 review thread.

Take a look at the Quantum Break review thread if you want something like that. Unless we get a bunch of reviews claiming how much better Dark Souls 2 is, this thread will never reach those lows.

I think it can, but DS3 obviously had much better quality control. You won't see Black Gulch levels of uninspired level design in DS3, that is fore sure.

The day From Software figures out how to make a game with steady framerate, Levels as sprawling as Dark Souls 3, and a world as interconnected as DS1 we'll have one of the greatest games of all time.

The gameplay will be there and Miyazaki will kill it on the lore/story as usual. They just have a few more things to tighten up.

I just came to make sure it isn't somehow a flop, and it's not.

Having just finished Eleum Loyce for the first time recently, I'll be interested to see which I prefer. Anything is better than the optional area of that though, jesus that was annoying. I'm glad I looked that up abandoned it.

I can't wait. I'm about 95% blind, all I've seen is a few early location shots and a small gameplay demo.

Having played it through a few times now, Dark Souls 3 has nothing on Shulva and Brume Tower.

But Dark Souls 3, like d00d3n said, is way more consistent in quality. That's its strength.

Shulva is really impressive.

It's weird to feel that sense of wonder and jaw-dropping 50 hours into a game, but that sure is what happened to me. And then you start going deep into the pyramid... And more... And more. So good.

I honestly couldn't care less about the interconnected world. Beautifully crafted individual areas are what's important for me

The separate levels are still quite good to explore.

But if you want the Dark Souls 1 super looping, you'll get none of that.

So they're not exactly contradictory.
Polygon specifically mention exploration which doesn't have much to do with looping and interconnectedness, as they list them seperatly:
Do you play for the joy and stress of exploring dangerous, intricately crafted places full of hidden elements and endless side paths?

The consistency statements are very encouraging. Darks Souls had so many lows with its highs. Part of the reason I liked DS2 so much was that it improved on the area design throughout the game as a whole, and if DS3 continues that I'll be ecstatic. Hoping the environmental variety is still there as well. I sorely missed it in Bloodborne.

So ignore that review? Gotcha. Anyone that says the world design was better in 2 than 1 is mental.

If you're referring to Polygon's, they're not saying that, they're saying that exploration in 3 is a lot worse than the rest of the Souls games, being largely linear. At least in 2 you did have way more than two open paths for exploration most of the time. It makes sense and it's a bit worrying frankly :/

In which way : world design/level connectivity, atmosphere, combat???
Level design is about the same I'd say. There are less connections between separate areas though I think, but it feels like a real place unlike DS2. I doubt any game will beat Bloodborne in atmosphere any time soon.

Critical reception reminds me of Fallout 4. Lower across the board, with a lot of fatigue built-in in the reviews. Many unscored reviews out there like Videogamer, read pretty middling. When the scores are updated that MC score is going down. I wonder if DSIII will also share the same fate as FO4 on a non-critic level.

Catching a LOT of flack on forums I mean. FO4 was one hell of a disappointment.

Worse points
-Combat despite being faster than other souls games is still slower than BB.
-New weapon arts aren't useful and neither is the mana bar for them. Feels tacked on.
-Boss variety isn't good. This will be the part most will talk about after the honeymoon period is over. So many bosses using flaming swords, roll roll rinse and repeat.
-Atmosphere, no area in the game has a persistent level of dread like in the later areas of BB after killing Amelia.

Same points
-Linearity, there are a few hidden areas but for the most part the next area is always a door/elevator away.
-Level design, some areas look amazing others not so much. Could have used more environmental traps like BB.

Better points
-Build variety

I see. Thanks! Long Live Bloodborne!
