Enter The Gungeon |OT| Praise the gun

Just had a run that got me to the 5th floor for the first time. Had a cannon called the Particulator which made short work of every boss I encountered. Eventually died due to falling in a pit, feels bad man.

The Particulator led to my best run yet. It destroys bosses without breaking a sweat.

Does going through the grate created by
the fireplace
lead you to a whole different route, or does it just skip a couple of floors?

How's the difficulty compare to Nuclear Throne?

Like I said on the last page, the dungeon layouts don't throw up random middle fingers to you like Nuclear Throne's levels sometimes do.

But I feel like Gungeon has more "useless" weapons than Throne does, so it's kind of a weird tradeoff. Throne's level designed fucked me more, but finding a bunch of garbage weapons in a row has screwed me a lot in Gungeon, too.

So with NT, the difficulty came from the levels sometimes being randomly generated in a way that seems impossible, but with Gungeon it comes from not finding decent gear quickly enough. The good thing about Gungeon is that it will never just spawn you in an area where you're instantly totally fucked like Throne does.

I agree. There were so many NT runs where the procedurally-generated level design just said "Fuck You" and it made me sad.

That said, I still prefer the arcade stylings of NT over the dungeon-crawling of Gungeon, but it is a preference thing.

Indeed, spawning into a map that's begins with a narrow corridor only to have Lil Hunter jump out of the side of the wall and fill your tiny space with bullets is a good example of how silly that game can be at times.

Not that I disliked it though.

Right on, thanks (hadn't kept up on the thread). Will be picking this up soon (didn't play NT as much as I expected partially due to the difficulty).

Yes, exactly. Lil Hunter's level is exactly the one I was thinking of when I was making that post.

Lil Hunter was harder than the Throne itself, mostly because the Throne is always in exactly the same room layout.

All this talk about of Nuclear Throne really makes me regret not getting a cheap key from the BST thread.

I think both this game and that are equally great and a lot of which people will like better is just going to come down to small differences and a preference on the arcade-linear vs dungeon-crawl structures.

So yeah, get Nuclear Throne when you have some money and some free time, it's amazing.

Took me 18 hours of playtime to finally reach the 5th floor boss. Ended up dying to it with 1/8th health to go. Man, that's rough.

Favorite guns so far are; The Fightsaber (incredibly useful reload), The Scrambler, Meat Gun and Crestfallen. Oh, yeah.. and the Disintegrator.

I probably shouldn't admit this but I still haven't managed to beat that bastard. It's gotten to the point that just getting to his level makes me nervous and I invariably fuck it up.

At first glance, I like Nuclear Throne's faster difficulty ramp than ETG's but I need to play more to be certain. I'm also not a big fan of reloading in ETG.

Got an item that makes bullets go back to the shooter when I roll through them. It's extremely good so far, and they always go back to the send, no matter which direction a roll. Hope I can make this run last a while.

After getting really experienced at the game the first point I consider okay to die is at Lil' Hunter's fight.

He can be SUCH a pain.

The Zorgun is awesome, got killed by the second boss anyway but it felt great.

Found a couple of NPCs (a girl and big dude in armor) behind a door closed by a big lock, any pointers on where/how to get the key for it ?

I'm getting a red X on a chest even though I have a key. Does a failed lock pick attempt break the chest?

Yup it breaks the lock. You should just try lockpicking if you don't have keys and have explored all of the floor + killed the boss, that's what I do at least.

Nuts. The description made it sound like it you can only attempt the lock pick item once per chest.

Does it have a high success rate? Because I've been using it a lot up to this point and this is the first time this has happened, haha.

I mean technically it is one time use per chest... since either it opens the chest, or it breaks the lock permanently :P

I remember the devs saying in a stream that the lockpick is a 50/50 chance to open the chest.

Edit: Oh yeah small thing I also noticed, the lockpick actually has a cooldown, so you can't use it twice in a row without clearing another room in between.

I'm having the run of a lifetime right now. It's always fun in rougelikes when everything just goes your way and you're supper overpowered. I have a passive that sends bullets back to the shooter when I roll through bullets, and then another passive that is a turtle buddy that shoots enemies on his own and is actually pretty strong. And then I have 2 amazing guns. On either floor 5 or 6 right now; prob will get a lot further.

Godspeed!

Are all laser/beam weapons terrible? They are taking forever even against the smallest foes.

I find the Jolter to be a good all around weapon. Some of the single shot weapons are nice against the stronger regular enemies because you can kill them with one or two hits out of hiding.

mfw I get a second key in the first room I enter:

I feel like the game needs some balancing patches. Apparently any gun can show up at anytime right?

Because sometimes I get to the third boss with nothing but trash, and sometimes I grab a weapon on the first floor that basically annihilates all of the bosses in 10 seconds. It's always either too OP or too UP, middle term is hard to get.

Anyone has a similar feeling?

Yeah I was getting super frustrated with the game early on because I kept getting garbage ass weapons or no weapons at all (like worse than the starter weapon garbage).

The proton backpack is good, especially when you get the triple shot.

Umm, that's par for the course for roguelikes.

Nuclear Throne has an amazing weapon balance. You might not get exactly the weapons you want, but you'll hardly ever be really underpowered. Usually by poorly made decisions only.

I think NT scaled the weapon pool based on the level you're on. This is more like BoI, where anything in the pool can show up at any time.

Welp lost the the boss
4 killer statues or something
. Got it down to a sliver of life, then it changed its pattern and I wasn't ready for it. It was actually a pretty hard boss; dunno how someone would beat it without some kind of amazing gear. I thought the death screen says what floor you died on, but it didn't. What does the top left number stand for?

Personally, I get the feeling that with the right timing and movement, you can handle any room with your basic weapon. The dodge roll is a really powerful move. Pretty much every time I've died, I've always felt it was my fault, that I should dodged left instead of right or not have been aggressive in that moment, or should have killed a certain enemy first

I do feel there is some luck because I don't see how you can handle some of those bosses without at least one blank, but I'm betting movement, rolling, and reading tells can help with that too

Yeah, compared to bullethell shooters the patterns are a lot more doable, and you don't have an invincible roll in those.

Yeah, although in Gungeon you always have the basic gun with infinite ammo to fall back on as a bare minimum, where in BoI you can essentially dead-end with the wrong drops. (although usually you eventually just become crazy overpowered)

Overall I think it's definitely too soon to compare the games like this since there's probably also more secret stuff that hasn't been figured out yet, similar to how BoI is a lot harder at first if you don't know about the secret rooms yet.

I think all the chests on floor one should be unlocked. It would help a lot with progression and make the first level something you look forward to to see which stuff you get. It also lets you save key for more chests later. As it is right now I think it's hurting the "one more run" dynamic since there's a good chance you'll end up with nothing in the early game.

Is there any differences between the loots of different colored chests?

I'd like to think so, but the official wiki doesn't mention anything about rarity. Going by MMO standards, I'd say Brown<Green<Blue.

Also, looks like there's a reference to a character from Nuclear Throne, as well. One of the Shrine/Statues you can find is
YV, and paying 10 coins can grant you a bonus to randomly fire extra shots for no ammo cost every time you fire your weapon
.

So does everyone have a favorite character so far?

I thought I liked the Pilot for lockpicking but I had a few runs back to back where he kept breaking the locks which was very frustrating. I just gave up and went back to Marine who has very good passive bonuses.

Marine all the way.

Maybe roguelikes are just not for me, but I hate starting off with that shitty default gun every time.
Same. It is more of an issue in this game than NT or even BoI. I actually think NT's starting gun is satisfying to use.

Is there no online scoreboard or anything like that? Missed opportunity there, considering how well it works in NT...
Yeah, I hope it's added. For all of the attention to detail in other areas, it is an odd oversight. Including it later would help with replay-ability.

I'm enjoying this, but the first chamber is very unsatisfying. It's too long and feels too much like a chore. Sometimes you even reach the boss without a gun, which means you're going to be fleeing and dodging for two minutes because the starter gun does no damage and has long reload times.

Not a big fan of the music either, it doesn't give you any sense of urgency (well, nothing in the game does so far).

The graphics, the guns and the bullet hell aspects are much better than in NT though.
I'm loving Gungeon but I agree with the bullet sponge issues, particularly with boss battles. I love how many guns there are but some of the standard fire arms seem a little too similar.

Despite all of my niggling issues with Gungeon, it has been great fun thus far. In fact, I may have played more Gungeon in two days than my overall play time with NT.

I don't understand jail cell keys. It has been 4 times now that I couldn't find any on the same floor as a cell. Explored everywhere and shit.

Can they appear in secret rooms or something? Or are they in random background objects?

I find the Marine to be the most reliable by far. He starts with armor, has a great starting weapon, and he shoots more accurately than the other characters.
