I wish I was enjoying this game more...there are some things I like about it, like the presentation, and the controls feel alright...but I dunno, I just suck at this game. I can do much better at Binding of Isaac to compare to another roguelike, lol.

I kinda agree with Jeff Gerstmann from their quick look that the camera can be extremely problematic. Trying to aim takes the focus off what might be behind too often. I also kinda take issue with some enemies like grenades being right in your face when you enter a room.

That mixup when multiple things spawn in all directions and you focus on taking down a problematic enemy in front of you to get dogpiled by grenades from behind.

You can adjust the camera in the menu to so it won't react to aiming

The answer? Stop trying to aim.

It might sound stupid but if things are getting hectic then stop thinking about where your bullets are going, and focus on dodging the bullets. I mean, I aim a lot of the time, but as soon as the screen starts filling with bullets I stop, just holding my aim in their general direction and focusing on dodging what's around me.

It's also how a lot of bullet hell games are designed. Traditional bullet hell games often feature screen-clearing lasers, and that's the case because it places much emphasis on the players movement, and allows the game to throw more at the player on that front. This game has some of those design elements and I feel that placing focus on your movement and spatial awareness as opposed to accuracy is a learning curve that many struggle with.

That's also why I would rather play this on a controller. As the aim assist allows allows for less emphasis on where your bullets are going, and more on dodging projectiles. When things get tough, I just hold in a general direction and then focus my aim to kill what's left.
 
Is there any point to going back to the
Abbey of the True Gun? I didn't no damage clear the boss fight but I don't think no damage clearing the Oubliette boss fight unlocked anything either.

I will probably put together my own soundtrack in Spotify during the weekend. The music isn't terrible (close, though), but I think a really good soundtrack would add a lot to this.
 
Shit! Last night I saved a cool looking spaceman, and I visited him at the hub world and then
I accidentally kicked his helmet down the well, and he looked at me sternly and asked "Why would you do that?" I felt awful because now he's gone again since he went after it ;~; I DIDN'T GET TO INTERACT WITH HIM

Look for him in the Gungeon again. And keep kicking his helmet down there when he returns, might be something in it for you.
 
I am probably going to pick this up. I am liking the art style but not a fan of dungeon games.

Question: I am not a big fan of dungeon crawler type games but I do love Hotline Miami. This looks something similar. If I like Hotline Miami will I like this?

The fact that you start over basically from square one and it isn't instant retry of levels may turn you off. Watch a few streams and see.
 
Hm, is there something I don't get?

Do you lose everything once you die? I thought this is a game like Rogue Legacy where you get stronger after every run.
 
So what's causing the game to be twice as hard on my marine? First floor acts like the 3rd floor, 3rd floor feels like the 5th floor. Bosses seem to last twice as long, it's only for him.

Edit: I assume this is what being cursed is.

You have some persistent upgrades to the item pool but there's nothing you get to keep on your person when you die.
 
PSA : When you've killed Blockner, don't forget to pay a visit to Ser Manuel in the first room of the training level.

Also, for each shortcut elevator activated you get a weapon unlock.
 
What I wish Gungeon had more than anything is a detailed stats page. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing and I really miss it here.

Like the game obviously knows how many of an enemy I've killed, it would be neat to be able to go look it up.

Some of the unlocks are cool, but by and large you're making it deeper through refined skill and increased knowledge about game mechanics/enemy behavior. Many of the best and most useful guns are available from the very beginning.

Haha I'm surprised you remembered my earlier posts. Yeah it took a while since I normally just become really annoyed with roguelikes very quickly, but this game has a certain charm that made me want to keep playing, and its been very enjoyable and rewarding slowly pushing further into the chambers.

Still a definite love / hate relationship though. Sometimes when I die I am just so thoroughly disgusted with everything that I alt-f4 and walk the hell away immediately.
 
Are there other ways to reveal secret doors on 2-5? I was kind of bummed out that the secret room in 1 always leads to
the hidden floor
 
Finally made it to Chamber 3 boss and died after about 3 hours of playtime with my first run with the Convict. I ended up getting some really good guns and perks this run like the perk that allows you to roll into an enemy attack and send it back to them. Overall, I am really enjoying this the more I play it. :)

The devs said they've cleared 200,000 Which means over 50,000 sold on PS4.

lol, same, I think I've alt-F4ed more than I've used the actual "quit to desktop" menu option. Especially since once you start getting better, when you die it's a 40-45 minute run down the drain.

Yeah totally, I'm at the point now where I pretty much do one run per sit-down session, maybe 20-ish minutes long or more. When I die it's just followed by this fucking deep exhalation and an alt-f4. Can't even be bothered to get legitimately mad anymore, it's more that disgusted feeling you get when someone who you know is an asshole goes ahead and behaves like an asshole.

I'm just sort of like "I don't really know what I expected here."

I feel like it's going to pick up steam (yeah, yeah har har) via word of mouth. A number of sites are just putting reviews up now, and I've been telling some of my friends to get it after playing more and appreciating the depth.

Speaking of reviews though, Gamespot gave it a 7.0, saying it that the fusion of genres doesn't really work. Can't say I agree with that, I definitely think that score is too low, but then again the game is probably not for everyone.

I did my part and bought it on the PS4. Trying to get some of my friends to try it out but with the onslaught of big games coming out in the next few weeks I dont know if any of them will bite right away despite the fact I know they would love this game.
 
Chamber 4 continues to be my downfall. I just can't manage to spend enough time down there to get used to it I guess. And I often go into it pretty decked out.

It's good though. Means the game is gonna last me a long time.

Yeah same, alternate floors and more characters would be great. I'm getting a new PC pretty soon and might double dip down the road if/when there's major DLC.

I'm glad the game is doing so deservedly well, I think part of that is the $15 price point which is very generous for this game imo.
 
Sounds like they over nerfed the treadnaught judging by user impressions. Only thing that was stupid about him was the homing missle. Besides that he was really easy.

Maybe we should change the OT title to "Still very much a roguelite" :P . I'm seeing a lot of people come in here expecting something different and having a bad time because of it.
 
as far as DLC is concerned i'd like, of course, more guns.

it would also be cool to add some new features to the floors, and more minigames to find. new items, new bosses, maybe even an extra class.

although i'm "one of those" folks that would like there to be some sort of progression implementation in the game, like upgrades, or an OPTIONAL easy mode that has checkpoints, i'm kind of on the fence about it. maybe a shop item you can buy that you keep after death? and upon use it let's you start where you last died, but without any new items and weapons?

ie: i die on the 3rd floor, i use the item and it warps me to the start of 3rd floor, but i'm reset back to having my default weapon and item. could also make it so that whole floor resets so i'd have to work my way back to where i was all over again. just a thought. i mean, some games have normal modes and then have ultra hard survival modes, so why can't roguelikes have forgiving easy modes?

Super Space Turtle is already in the game, though.

Outside of more guns, room layouts, and enemies... I think what I want the most is more quirky weird shit. Stuff like the shooting gallery. There's not a whole lot of that in this game.

this is already in the game with the shortcut system. Once you fix the elevator you can skip to that floor. Depending on how far you skip down, you get a certain amount of weapons.

Kind of hoping that up the room variety in future updates. I'm seeing some rooms a bit too much.
 
The hardest thing about Treadnaught was that the fight gets harder the longer it goes. If you have a really good weapon you can wreck him before the fight got too bullshit.
 
This deserves all of the success. Love the game. After playing hundreds of hours of Isaac and 20 hours of Nuclear Throne, playing something that runs at an acceptable framerate is a breath of fresh air.

keyword: optional. the game can still be plenty enjoyable even without the die-and-start-all-the-way-over mechanic. it could also help people get used to playing before tackling the unforgiving normal mode. i pretty much side with Jim Sterling on this issue, as far as adding easy modes to these new "git guud" ultra hard permadeath games like roguelikes and souls and what not.

i know not many agree but they aren't going to change my mind.

cool, i was hoping there would be a way to do that. the furthest i can get is dying at a third boss. i've been unlocking a lot of guns and items, and every now and then rescue characters. (so far i only have the king/servant, the witch lady, the green alien in the space suit, the weird dude with the backpack, the shop lady and giant armored dude, and that's it)

i'm losing my mind though looking for cracks in the wall after i read about it early in this thread. anytime i see something that sort of looks like a crack i use a blank or i shoot at it. also didn't know you could shoot chests if you didn't have a key.
 
Fourth boss I don't even know what happened. I only had one heart but damn it didn't seem like there was any way to even avoid getting hit.
 
I would love any DLC that makes the early game more varied and enjoyable. Some characters, some different starting kits, or some new rooms would be wonderful.

I will be takin a break to dark souls 3 but it's something I can see myself playing for a long time. Nuclear throne I actually prefer the shooting a lot more. But the framerate and constant Flickering when the screen gets busy is so bad.
