Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

Spoke too soon.

Getting seemingly random drops just moving around.

Decided to run everything but textures and reflections on LOW.

If you're running Windows 10 and are experiencing crashes every 10 to 15 minutes try this fix that I've been using for a while now.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/349040/discussions/0/405690850607153526/#p3

It's an issue with Windows 10's touch screen service. It fixed Street Fighter V, Naruto 4, DARIUSBURST, and other games for me.

I'm sure the majority of Windows 10 users experiencing crashes is from this.

I don't know why companies neglect to test this common issue and why Microsoft has neglected to patch this bullshit.

what setting causes the high RAM usage? i keep getting low memory crashes after playing a couple of hours, on max settings. i have 8GB RAM.

I wonder if this is somehow linked to the stuttering when saving etc. If it's saving and writing a large chunk of data to memory at that time or something.

People with Nvidia GPU's tried this? Allegedly helps with performance/stutters.
  1. Open nVidia Control Panel. You can click the little nVidia icon in your taskbar to open it.
  2. Go to 3D Settings, and then "Manage 3D Settings."
  3. Switch to the Program Settings tab, and then select Dark Souls III (darksoulsiii.exe) from the drop-down list. It may take a few minutes to populate.
  4. Navigate to the settings you'd like to change, and select the option you want from the drop-down tab. In this case, we want "Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames", we want to set it to "Use the 3D Application setting", and you'll probably find it at the very bottom of the list.
  5. Once you've made your changes, make sure to hit the Apply button that will appear!

Anyone using steam overlay for framerate? I can not get the framerate to show up on this game.

It worked the first time I launched it and after that it's not working at all. The steam overlay works, but not the framerate counter.

Could it be because i'm using the steam controller and it's using big picture mode when I launch it?
That's exactly it. For whatever reason they haven't implemented the fps counter into big picture mode.

Anyone able to verify if what's argued on Reddit is correct regarding older card support?

Because if so, then I guess I can get the game. I can handle 30fps. I have a GTX 580.

Quoting myself:
Getting 26-28 FPS average with everything on low at 1080p, with some spikes into the mid-40 in the starting area. Currently using 361.43 drivers.

With the drivers recommended in the subreddit I got my FPS up into the 45-55 range with some settings on medium at 1080p (I didn't try more combinations because I didn't want to go over the 2h refund period), enough of a boost to lock it to 30.

Of course, that's just in the starting area so the FPS might go down the drain further into the game.

What's with the frequent pauses when it's autosaving? Is it just me? I didn't have this problem with DS1 or 2 installed on the same drive (2TB 7200rpm).

8GB RAM

It's running well for me, 40-60 FPS at 1680x1050. It crashed upon reaching the first bonfire, but turning the lighting to low seems to have fixed it. Also, for some reason the only settings it wants to keep are the ones I originally set. I had most things on low but it doesn't make a great deal of difference to the performance, so I have to turn the settings up every time I start the game.

Shadows, DOF and lightning are on low, SSAO medium, with everything else on high.

I do get some stuttering when saving, but it only seems to happen periodically - most of the time when I see the save icon it doesn't stutter at all.

Definitely not just you, lots of people are having this problem even on SSDs.

I've tried a few "solutions" but nothing worked, my game somehow got corrupted, so I'm downloading it ATM.

Still no fix for the bonfire crash, do we still have to play with lighting on Low?

Wish we had a stripped down gaming version of Windows.

Get a G-Sync monitor. It helps with all sorts of minor stutters like that. Worth every penny.

edit: Unless you're talking about the stutter as the game autosaves. G-Sync can't do anything about that. Lots of us are stuck with it :(

Enabling Adaptive V-Sync causes tearing which is what usually happens when V-Sync is locked in-game. So I'm guessing there's no way to run adaptive v-sync unless they patch in the option to turn off v-sync?

formatted everything, downloaded the game again

set the lightning to low and auto detect off in the xml, marked it read only

restarted the game no crash so far, i'm at the High Wall of Lothric
I don't get any save hitching whatsoever. I can be rotating the camera, come out of the inventory, save icon flashes and the pan remains perfectly smooth.

i cant find it in this thread, where is the file to edit to keep low lighting?

it goes back to high every time i start my game up

Trust me I would if I were on a desk. My PC is consolized. Windows has to account for so much shit other than gaming which is why I brought it up. Kind of wish we had an open box open OS platform for PC gaming to thrive on

c:\users\(your windows username)\appdata\Roaming\dark souls III\GraphicsConfig.xml

appdata is a hidden folder, you need to unlock hidden files and folder in Win

wrong quote?

Gettin' around 35-40 FPS on High settings at 1080 with my Alpha. (i3, basically a GTX 750 TI and 8GB of RAM.) I have OC'd my CPU and GPU though. No random crashes or anything within the first few hours. Haven't updated to the latest drivers either. Is that what is causing the issues for some people? Been holding off because of that.

My 390 gets to 85-90 regularly. Apart from now its broken and anytime it gets to that temperature it crashes. My room has its own climate and I don't understand how, Its impossible for that room to be cold.

That sounds a bit like my room and my 7970 (280x) :/ I might not have paid too much attention when I bought it but I have the feeling that it got louder and hotter than it used to be too, to the point I even dropped my overclock from 1100/1500 to 1000/1400 and while it still creeps near 80°C in DS III, the noise-levels are more bearable like that.

I wondered, since I game mostly at 1080p anyway, does overclocking the VRAM actually net me much?

And could anyone recommend a good, non-intrusive borderless window program for DS III? I normally use GeDoSaTo but I obviously can't in this case.

Otherwise my performance is completely playable, I run between 45-60fps at 1080p with everything maxed. I would like to drop things down a notch to get closer to a locked 60fps but no matter what I change in the settings my fps hardly changes unless I set everything to low.

System:

- i5 3570k @ 4.2ghz
- Club3D 7970 Royal Queen overclocked to either 1100/1500 or 1000/1400
- 8gb 2133mhz RAM (in single-channel mode as my B channel doesn't work and it was too much of a pain to RMA it at the point I noticed :P)
- Windows 7 64bit

This is really weird, yesterday I lowered the Lighting graphical setting down to avoid the bonfire glitch. Today I've been getting the bonfire glitch again. Worried that the problem was getting worse I checked the graphics settings and lo and behold the Lighting had been switched back up to High (I had auto-detect disabled and it remained so when I checked today. Something else interfering? FROM just being really proud of their lighting for this game? Either way, there is clearly something wrong with the way the engine is rendering fire. Steady 60fps during the 2nd and 3rd boss battles with all of their effects but walk past a few lit torches and whomp 20fps!

My MSI R9 390 has reached 80 degrees playing this on most max settings at 1440p. I have motion blur off, AA off, shadows down to high, and DOF to high. Usually in the 75-77 range.

I get a little freaked out seeing that temp and wonder whether I should use one of those custom fan profiles I read about for the MSI 390?? I've read that the fans on this card don't kick it unless it goes over 60 degrees. This is a new PC from January so I was a bit out of the loop for a few years in terms of PC parts.

Have you tried playing in 1080p?

You could try a custom fan profile as you say, but personally I would just turn it down a notch.

Can't be. Pick up items, do gestures, wildly open and close the inventory and message screen. It doesn't hitch every single time but it can still happen often, even in your game. Everyone has to be experiencing it.

Have you tried reinstalling your GPU drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller?

I just tried and nothing changed. I have the same problem as that guy, except with a i5 4690k. Still getting the same performance with Vita version. I really don't know what's wrong.

I don't know why, but this game suddenly started fully utilizing my 750 ti, whereas it used to go up to around 80% usage before. It actually does seem capable of 1080p at high settings with 30 fps.

Haven't tried yet. I might play around with the other settings first and seeing how much of a difference certain ones make for visual quality.

Man what the hell happened.. whenever i get summoned everyone is just skating around! like 7 spawns in a row. What a pile of garbage.

Regionfree is off. Internet is good.
Was fine earlier today and yesterday :(

My reference cooled 290X is hitting 92C fairly quickly with DS 3 but these temps are common for a reference 290x, so far no crashing and 60fps/1080p other than the auto save hitching issue.

So what's the consensus on the best injectable AA solution? The in-game AA, for a simple toggle switch, is actually half decent, but I'd still like to clean the game up more.

I have it set to low and that xml in the roaming directory is read only - it also says low.. I exit the game, xml still says low, load up ds3 - it says high. Auto Detect is also off.
guhhh.

What's your CPU and how do you define "locked"?

For me, "locked" means no drops whatsoever. The game dips to 57-58 once in awhile so that's not locked for me, not counting stutters during saving.

What's your i5? If it's a 760 then you can try overclocking it. This game can be quite CPU bound. I am not very sure about the VRAM consumption on that settings so you might be VRAM limited, in that case nothing you can do.

It's a 760. I have never tried overclocking before, so I'm a bit uncertain about that. I don't think my cpu fan cooler is state of the art or anything lol

Turn off Motion Blur and Depth of Field, should help.

This I'll definitely try though!

It doesn't seem to be a DS3 issue, at least before it would crash my PC on any game. Now though it just seems DS3 seems to crash when it reaches 93c instead of my whole PC, which I guess is a step forward. No matter what I do it won't stay at a steady temperature any more.

Overclocking is not that complicated. Easy even. Especially if you only do some basic and not hardcore overclocking.

You can take a look at these guides here and here.

Generally, there are 3 things to look at, the base clock, the multiplier, and the vcore. It should be as easy as setting the base clock to 200mhz, multiplier to 20, and VCORE at around 1.3 or sth. Test for stability, if stable, lower VCORE by 0.05v and test again. Until not stable then go back up 0.05v. You can go up or down with smaller step like 0.025 for example, but it will take more time and effort to test.

Study your bios and you should be able to know which setting is which and set them correctly. Those links I linked seem to be enough for you to understand everything.

For cooler, which one do you have? If it sucks then even a cheap 212 evo is fine.

In my opinion, overclocking is really worth it as it can extend the capability of the CPU by quite a large margin in the case of the 760.

For some reason my game got corrupted, just finished re-downloading, put everything on max and so far so good, no crashes, no stutter...

Let's hope it stays that way.

It's possible! I played 15 hours and didn't experience a single stutter. Smooth sailing so far (getting my ass handed to me by the game, though, haha!)

My framerate completely tanks every time at the first bonfire on the road to sacrifices, goes back to normal after ten seconds or so

I just have a stock intel cooler, that came with the CPU

You definitely should consider aftermarket cooler, from cheaper models mentioned Hyper 212 EVO is good choice. Noctua has some more expensive and more hardcore options. Even if you don't OC your CPU even then aftermarket cooler would be good to get, those default Intel ones are so sucky.

So I was zipping along with my GTX 770 playing on Max settings, smooth as butter, no crashes.

Then my warrior found a kite shield and picked it up, and now the game crashes near bonfires.

I'm running at High settings and getting 30fps on my little media machine in the living room.

3rd Gen i3
7770 2gigs
8gigs RAM
SSD

I could stream it from my rig in the office, but I don't trust the input lag. I'm happy with it on the 50inch though.

Has anyone found a fix for 16:10 resolutions? My 1920x1200 setting looks like 1920x1080, while 1920x1080 gets stretched to my native 1920x1200...
