Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

So the rumors were spot on?

A lot of people where claling out the Gaffer that released the info as a liar - think some apologies are due.

Anyway, that CPU OC is pretty negligible, and the GPU is indeed about in between a GTX 960 and GTX 970, closer to the 970 for sure.

If it's $400, it's still a nice value -mind you, I totlaly understand people who want ot jump ship to PC gaming, this isn't what console gaming has been about for a very long time.

If it's in the $500 dollar range, as I said in the previous thread, it's not a very good vlaue over PC gaming - more reason for people to be angry and want to leave.

This is good for PC gamers though either way you cut it. More bells and whistles in games that will take advantage of more powerful PC hardware, CPU's that will last another generation probably. I alos think people are reading too much into Sony's NEO requirement for games. I doubt it means they will force developers to optimize fo rthe higher spec, and I doubt we're oging to see many older games be updated to support the new spec either.

For someone without a 4k TV is there a point in upgrading?

How would the performance of UC4 or Bloodborne differ on the NEO in comparison to my OG PS4?

Its probably not as complicated as I feel this is but I am confused :(

With 4K being in a tiny amount of homes in the US and predicted to be in only 10% of homes in three years, I guess I don't get why people would rush out t po buy this thing.
PSVR, aka Morpheus. They couldn't be more obvious with the code name.

4k tvs are also dropping in price and the next tech push right now. By this fall I want I could potentially go in and buy a 4ktv for less than a grand. I can see Sony trying to get their foot in the door early with this.

At this point, either MS doesn't have anything similar coming any time soon, or they have their info locked down tight...Doesn't seem like any leaks from the MS camp..I believe it's the former

IT appears MS is going to Play the wait and see follower on the mini upgraded console and VR as well..

Which is funny because I believe Phil was the first person I heard even talk about incremental upgrades, only to turn around later and act like he wasn't a fan of it...

What a waste of time. The specs aren't even that different. It's basically still a PS4.

Why not just wait a few years and release PS5? Ugh.

Well I think the obvious thing is that this is Sony's UHD blu-ray player. UHD blu-ray players are $400 right now. So assuming prices on those don't drop, this will be a UHD player that will play video games.

I may have already posted a couple of times in the thread already but now that I think about it, who do these fuckin' click-bait clowns think they are?! I came in wanting more news about my man The Neo and his 4th gloriously violent entertainment installment extravaganza and this is what I get?!

Who the hell are these GiantBomb64 fools anyway?

I think we are all missing the biggest point. This thing will probably launch around the same time as the Nintendo NX. Between PSVR and PS-NEO I don't think Nintendo are going to make any meaningful splash, maybe this was a ploy on Sonys part all along to put the final nail into Nintendo for dogging them all those years ago.

/conspiracy :D

Nx was never going to make any meaningful splash.. lol

I didn't see much of this at all in the previous thread.

Specs seem only mildly improved looking at numbers, but I know they don't tell the whole story in practice.

At this point I'm more interested in knowing if 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc support will be included in the new model.

Its still using the Jag... IPCs am cry. That clock increase is barely going to do anything.
Don't know what you mean, not that it was correct, but when MS said that the XB1 was clocked 150MHz higher, many people including DF counted that tiny upgrade as responsible for the odd time you saw the XB1 showing a 1-2 frame lead over the PS4 at any obscure moment, you still hear them mention the XB1's CPU as something tangible in recent articles. 500MHz is pretty significant in comparison, about 2.3 times better.....I think that 500MHz would definitely sort out more of the tiny frame drops we see in many titles, we may very well see more locked 30 and 60fps games like Driveclub and Metro.

I read your later post, but I'd still like to see them go higher with clockspeeds since they did not go with a later CPU, I'd like to think 14nm would give more leverage there, perhaps stability tests are still ongoing, so there's always a possibility they may go higher for release.

A little disappointed that that Sony did not go for the next CPU in AMD's IPC line, but perhaps that would have made the console $500 instead of $400 or perhaps there would be some level of incompatibility with older software/games. It seems that compatibility for older PS4 software was really important to them.....,....

In any case, I'd like to hear more about the architecture changes to CPU/GPU outside of the clockspeed.

Good thing i didn't buy the current model yet. I wonder if ND will patch U4 to run at 60fps on the NEO model or if the CPU will be a bottleneck.

It's a typo, PS4 is 176GB/s.
Lol, should have noticed that, that 17GB's just looked plain weird to me, still a nice boost on memory bandwidth, but the biggest upgrade here is definitely the GPU. I can see better AA, a higher resolution and more 1080p 60fps games for GPU bound games. 1080p should scale nicely into 4k as well.

Those type of increases are no longer possible. Half a decade of intel CPUs has brought us what? 30-40% IPC increase? GPUs increase used to be 80-100% every generation, now it's a fucking miracle if we get 50% increase in performance.

Where is my quantum or graphene computer?

I'm still stunned the original leak came from a Gamestop convention.

Why? The Gamestop conference is basically E3 for Gamestop managers and higher ups who get the scoop on all the major information over the next year. It's not surprising that info leaked out.

Okay

Any idea when they are planning to launch the new console?

In fact, any other info would be much appreciated :)

I do not know.

What I do know is code name , it is real , giant bomb article has most facts.

giant bomb do not mention vr but there is enhancement for this

I'm pretty against incremental releases. . .but I'm hoping this means the base PS4 gets a decent price drop so I can be a super late adopter for a super low price.

$$$

PSVR, aka Morpheus. They couldn't be more obvious with the code name.

But you don't need it to play PSVR.

The fact that we didn't hear about it fm devs before the convention is what kind of blows me away. It feels to me like they wanted this to get out.

.

Ps5 isn't going o be 18+TF.

Pretty pointless upgrade, tbh. But that's what I want, since the alternative is Neo-exclusive games/content and I ain't having that shit.

That said, the spec bump looks minimal. I wouldn't expect it to improve performance all that much, but since games are required to run on both there should be a performance improvement instead of a Hyrule Warriors Legends thing.

I wonder if they phase out base PS4 on shelves?

If so, it will probably sell well, I dunno.

Kind of leaves Xbox One looking hella weak.
No, they will make it an entry level model. Push the price down to like $250-300 and then put the PS4k on top bracket of $400-500.

So, go buy a $900 4K TV and a $400 NEO and enjoy your $1300 resolution bump?

-nope

I don't think a PS4.5 can even do that. A 970 can't even pull off 4K on Rocket League without running like crap so I can't see how a console is going to do it. That doesn't mean I don't think there's something coming, but it's goals seem rather lofty.

Sony is going to know what MS felt like at E3 2013. Don't worry.

Just like how MS felt when they replaced the Xbox after 4 years?

Oh wait, that worked out for them.

But I guess your situation is different. MS only wanted to get rid of used games, require online, and have the Kinect be required for use, just like Sony are going to introduce a slightly more powerful PS4 for higher end entertainment uses.

Oh wait.

I feel like the major reason Sony is doing this is to get a 4K bluray player to the masses. We still don't have a Sony 4K player yet in retail. I remember reading that Sony didn't plan to launch one till 2017.

What I don't understand about this rumor is, why would they double the number of CUs (and bump the clock speed) on the GCU more than doubling it's performance, but leave the RAM almost the same and barely improve the CPU? Feels mismatched, something like 28CUs might have been a better fit and cheaper.

Because the goal is just to run the same games at a higher resolution for people with 4k sets. That's all. They have probably done all sorts of tests to arrive at these specs.

That's a pipe dream.

I could see MS launching a Xbox One Slim this year and wait till next year for an upgraded Xbox One. Phil Spencer has stated that he expects if they do it, it's going to be a big jump

"I'm not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we're going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers, For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people--an upgrade."

to sell 4K TVs and PSVR.

I do hope developers of existing games strive to support the new system. Like Dirt Rally with the high PC settings, and yeah Bloodborne with 60fps or even just stable 30fps and much improved aliasing for instance would be nice.

I mean why not make your games more appealing and generate new sales for those with the newer console. General goodwill since it would appear that updates will automatically apply. I doubt publishers would be able to put these improvements for the new system behind an upgrade DLC paywall.... Well we hope!

If the article is correct in that the requirement is for the NEO version to have the same or higher frame-rate as the base model, then I can almost guarantee you that developers will shoot for 4K resolution rather than shooting for 60fps, if the base version runs at 30fps.

I'd rather shoot for ultra settings at 1080p or 1440p than some watered down 4K.

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs. If NEO is more powerful than NX, that at least "stops the bleeding". I guess Sony recognizes that their power advantage is significant in an age where all consoles are pretty much the same, and first party output is lacking all around.

Original PS4

CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz
GPU: AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz
Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s

NEO
CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
GPU: Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz
Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

Why did the PS4 not ship like this in the first place?

Cerny needed a rough draft in place first?

So basically this E3 Sony will unveil Neo, and showcase games on the Morpheus.

Does this also mean Agent will finally be revealed? Would be stupidly perfect.
