Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

Feel like Microsoft has to answer this move from Sony, can't just keep trucking along with a single worse performing console. Sony's going to own the market even more with a super cheap PS4 that's still superior in performance.

For people wanting to go PC only after this news.........what about PS4 exclusives?
I'm thinking about going with PC + NX until next gen. We don't know how many AAA exclusives that will arrive and what state they will be in before the next generation starts. In hindsight it seems like going in day 1 was a bad idea considering the current list of exclusives, there are still lots of games that were shown at the original PS4 unveil that are unreleased and now we're hearing about a console upgrade.

I can't believe this crap is happening.

This sort of business model is going to really hurt console gaming. Why the hell even bother anymore? As someone who has a half-decent gaming PC, all 3 consoles and both current-gen handhelds, I'm just going to say screw it and move all my gaming budget into PC upgrades. This is the stupidest direction gaming has gone since micro-transactions and DLC became the norm.

They may not care to bother with it. The only real benefit I see here is for Sony's first party studios. They will likely be forced to optimize for both.

Did you not read the article? 3rd party games are required to support it and have a Neo version for their games. Its not optional.

Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.

I've got two systems I'd need to trade in :( I'm still going to be out at least $200.

Sorry, but if both are going incremental.....I'm only choosing one. They can have fun fighting for a smaller market now. This is only going to make people really choose one over the other with the constant upgrades. I don't have enough money to be upgrading two....maybe 3 if Nintendo does this shit every 3 years.

Hardware arm race is coming, get ready for yearly upgrade.

There may be a better question to ask in all of this. Will developers become even more careless and release games that are more broken because they feel superior hardware will take care of some of the issues that they didn't bother to fix?

Not really? Because PS4 by default is still going to be sold as a lower cost alternative and its share is only going to increase as the amount of people hop on. PS4K is only for enthusiasts that want more power in the same closed ecosystem, it will never be the priority because the base standard for games will still be OG PS4, devs arent going to change this.

As has been said, the real concern would probably be how big the increase to NEO would be, as devs can just tick up the framerates or IQ and call it a day. Would that be enough for its existence to be justified?

So sony is going to force every dev/pub that wants to release a ps4 game to make a neo mode for it. Isn't something like this a little authoritarian for a company like sony?

Devs are gonna fucking hate this, forcing them to optimize their game for another machine.

Its not really optimizing all that much if this information is true. Everything in terms of components is the same architecture wise from the same amount of ram, to the same amount of CPU cores, just increased and upclocked. So you can probably literally copy the same PS4 code to the PS4K base and just have it run faster on the new machine by default even without touching anything else.

Thank fuck, I was hoping it was just a baseline for better VR and 4K support and not a halfstep console. Neither of those things are important to me at the moment so my 5 month old PS4 purchase is still validated.

The current rumor says all PS4 games from a certain point would require a "Neo" mode as well as a basic one, but I think your'e seriously overestimating how difficult that is. Most games still use high level APIs; devs are generally not slaving away optimizing low level machine code.

This really is comparable to making sure a PC game looks and runs nicely on a high end 2014 GPU in addition to a middle end card from 2013, but even easier than that because it's two very specific systems in an environment where developers have more control.

Not sure how anyone can have a problem with this. Their PS4 is not being supplanted, the upgrade is minimal and It all but guarentees that the base PS4 is going be slashed in price to be sold alongside neo.

But yeah, tell us more about your move to PC (which for most of you is a bunch of bollocks)

Here is the thing about Jaguar. The newer specs of the Ps4k cpu put it at similar frequencies to that of their PC counterparts. Both the xb1 and ps4 variants were always underclocked vis-a-vis what the architecture was capable or designed around.

Husband: "Hey, honey. How's it going?"

Wife: "It's going great.... Am I going crazy but is our PS4... looking different than normal?"

Husband: "No! N--n-n-n-no..... It's the same ol' PS4 I bought months ago."

Wife: "I'm not dumb. I found the receipt for a PS4K on the table."

Husband: "Ummmm. Lemme explain..."

You can't stop the story there. What comes next? Is it the sex!?

This is just like my Japanese animes.

Possible endings depends on how much of a smooth talker the husband is and how much he's wiling to do to keep his wife happy. Lol

Support and giving a damn about optimizing well for it is another.

I mean upping resolution, AA, and making the framerate more stable really isn't that difficult if you are keeping asset quality the same and just have the extra GPU power sitting there doing nothing. This isn't going to be a whole lot more work for developers unless they really want to put forth the effort to make a far superior Neo version. Which they have the horsepower to do if they want to push the asset quality as well.

I want to see how the MS response will be with the mess they did with eSRAM.

It will be way hard to shrink and increase power than PS4.

64MB eSRAM? 128MB eSRAM?

Yeah, it's not going to be as easy for Microsoft to make the upgrade more powerful than the PS4k like it is for Sony due to Sony using 8 GB's of unified GDDR5 RAM.

If they increase the eSRAM, it could possibly make the machine more costly &/or non-developer friendly.

Question for the software devs here. How hard would it be for devs to develop and optimize for the OG PS4 (which would typically be something like 1080p 30 fps).. and then unlock it to 1080p 60 fps

Western devs: It'll take a few adjustment, but it'll take a few weeks of testing.

Japanese devs: ............. paging Durante ..................

Fuck man, I like to be there at launch for all of Sony's gaming stuff. I already have PSVR preordered. I can't throw down another 400. I hate this :(

I'm right there with you. I'm in the middle of upgrading my PC, which will end up being close to $1K. I am getting the NX in the fall. I'm moving into my own place for the first time, whcih won't be cheap. Even if I decide I want this it is going to probably be on the back burner for a while.

Someone should ask Chris Roberts, if the specs are enough, if he'd potentially allow Star Citizen to be brought to upgraded PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

.

I don't think AAA games will run in 4k. Were also talking about a product with zero install base so far. No one knows how it will sell.
To me it looks like sony is leveraging their market share dominance by forcing devs/pubs to support their new product.
I have a 2xTitan X gaming rig and in many games I can barely hit 4k 60fps. The thought that a $400 console could do 4k 30fps native is laughable. Expect 1080p with more solid fps, better IQ and that is about it.

Their response should be much more interesting. I wonder if they'll match PS4K's power or exceed it.

The good news for them is the info on their box is nothing other than that it exists. With Sony's specs leaking into the open like this they have time to tweak / optimize what they are looking at to try and match or exceed it.

If it's that simple, why would sony feel the need to make it mandatory?

BTW could CPU specs not be locked down just yet? Sony managed to pull a fast one and put in 8 GDDR5 the last second.
It's what I surmised in a prior post, also, I do believe that changing the CPU to one more advanced from the AMD CPU line would render some incompatibility issues with past software. They may sort it out, but I figure a beefier CPU upgrade would also make the console $500.00 which they wanted to avoid. At this point, they may try to sort out any compatibility issues with going with a next line CPU or they may gain further headway with even higher clock-speeds on the jaguar CPU....

I'm sure they can work something out. Like make the machine powerful enough to run Xbox one game on emulation or something.

Quite a few people clearly had an expectation when they bought their PS4 and now that Sony has done something unexpected different people will have different reactions.
Sony really are the BEST... This is a SUPERCOMPUTER!
I remember when people were saying that about the PS3.

There still are barely any. Bloodborne is the only one so far I personally needed to buy. This year has Uncharted 4, The Last Kingdom... what else?

Oh get lost with this nonsense. Every month this year so far there has been at least one significant retail PS4 exclusive released, and thats ignoring the swarm of digital and indie games that get released every other week.

If that PS4.5 comes out I might seriously consider selling it once and for all.

I feel like this gen barely started. The big titles are coming out with certain regularity just now, and they already release a revision? I don't want to be with a closed system full of limitations that can not even be the main focus on 1st party development, that sounds silly as fuck.

I can just imagine running exclusive titles non optimized cause they were made with the new PS4 in mind. And not only that, I may only be aware of it after people hands on, cause on events such as E3 or any kind of announcement they will for sure expose only the better version.

I see no advantage to the console market in this kind of attitude. If they plan on doing such a thing just release everything for PC and let me freely choose my platform. Go full steam machine model and not only the worst part of both worlds.

I think statgaf should use this thread as a case study for posters who:

Didn't read OP
Didn't read article linked in OP
Have reading comprehension issues.

Even if he could.....they can't. They would have to get it running appropriately on the base model as well.

Cross gen is here folks! Permanently! Watch optimization go to shit now that we have to develop for double the SKUs!

why would they ignore the millions of people with a ps4 for the, probable, thousands of ps4k owners, especially when those publishers won't get jack shit from a ps4k sale?

Sorry, stepped away from the computer for a bit.

The thing is, many PS4 games from big AAA devs like Ubisoft often launch in a broken state as is with the current PS4, and that's a situation where they'd have an incentive to at least fix the game after launch to encourage future sales from non-Day 1 buyers. But many publishers would rather not have to fix a game they rushed to market; they'd rather just tell people to get better hardware as a "fix" to the problems.

And to address the bit about ignoring the large userbase it has, 3rd parties in particular sell their games on making their trailers and screenshots as amazing looking as possible. You can bet that with a better PS4 they will heavily prioritize the updated version and only ensure the PS4 base model "functions" to the bare minimum to ensure the best trailers and screenshots build the hype and lead to increased sales. And I'm pretty sure Sony couldn't force them to invest more money into optimizing the base version if pubs simply threatened to pull support.
