Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

I honestly can't remember the last time I was this genuinely let down by a game.

I don't know, I know I should play it again but I have literally no drive to after that first clear. This is from a guy who would regularly sit down and play through 64 three times in a row.

Dan didn't you already write a review saying the same thing?

Serious question though, I'm curious as to what it is that stole your enthusiasm for this one when people are saying this is SF64 on steroids?

Why the hate for Aquarosa? It's my favourite boss BECAUSE of high difficulty and the necessity of using another screen as a back view mirror of sorts.

Spoiler tag if you must, but can anyone say if the other continuities (SNES, 64 to Command) are referenced?

Well, there is a reference to Super Smash Bros. Brawl...

Tried 3hrs this morning. Tried another 2 this afternoon. I just can't enjoy it, being forced to look at the gamepad and in that moment usually needing to recalibrate. I want to like it... The second screen is ruining it for me and I like the gyro controls and like the structure of the game.

Sad. :-(

Did you try the alternate control scheme (gyro active only when pressing ZR)?

Ugh, I wish I could try it, I'm so on the fence. Directly above the fence. i mean, it's Starfox! And I loved the Splatoon motion control scheme! However, I can never seem to get into Platinum's games. TW101 never clicked.

What. Do. I. Do.

Try it. If you know someone that has it ask to play a few missions. It's really the only way.

...Nintendo should have released a (decent) demo of this instead of Guard imo.

so whats so evil about
Andross teleporter device? how he got mad with power using that thing? did he already had an army or something. i would thought about using it for tourism.

Guys this sucks.
I just rescued peppy on titiana
and I just don't care to play this, it feels soulless. It doesn't have the Platinum spark it needs. The controls aren't very good and looking between the gamepad and TV is just poor design. This should have been a $30 eShop game at best. Minamoto was right, this franchise has no future. I thought this was the game I wanted all this time but it just came out wrong.

It's not a platinum game. It's a StarFox game with Splatoonish controls. Platinum gave some ideas for the bosses, but they were mainly just art and music.

The most WTF moment in the game's story is
why did Andross try to teleport Gigarilla on HIS OWN BASE on Zoness, IN THE MIDDLE OF A SEA? Also, I really hoped I could take control of Gigarila, go through the portal with it and wreak havoc on the next level, but nope, it just caused Mission Failed.

The design of the levels (except the gyrocopter, what even was that) and all is great, but the controls just make everything a chore. They aren't unusable or anything, but it doesn't feel intuitive at all, I want to just sit back and enjoy the game but I feel like I have to focus on the controls. I don't even have problems with gyro controls, I love Splatoon and played through most of RE Revelations and did tons of runs in 643D with gyro. You can sort of play it like 64 without the dual aim, but it's a huge handicap because even outside of the parts where the game forces you to use it, everything is arranged in such a way that makes it not ideal.

Outside of the gyro there are just things that are bad, maybe it was my analog stick but it was basically impossible to boost without the arwing immediately jerking 90 degrees left or right, which pretty much takes precision maneuvering out of the equation, or barrel rolls being a double input in the analog stick, which is a horrendously clunky input to have such an import thing mapped to. I'm not even a stickler for controls, one of my favorite games is Armored Core For Answer and that's like carpal tunnel the game.

Idk, maybe it's because I played 64 to the point that it was second nature, but I feel like I don't have anywhere close to that control in this.

Also having to switch between 3rd person/TV and 1st person/gamepad is distinctly reminiscent of Other M's missile aiming and if I had to pick one thing from that game that shouldn't be evoked, it's that.

Edit: It's worth mentioning that Star Fox is my favorite Nintendo franchise. I love all the games, even Adventures, and not liking this is killing me.

I quite like it too, but it can be quite nasty at times. That being said, Salvadora might be my favorite of the two for sheer scale, it's easily the largest boss in the game if not the series. It also turns the game into bullet hell which makes Peppy's Barrel Rolling really important.

can't find the fifth medal on corneria and that's a good thing. I think when you want to find all medals by your own, this game will keep you busy for hours.

man I really hope this game sells decent. Star Fox has to be alive

I've read a few reports now that star fox guard is included with every retail version of the game, is this true or is it just for certain regions as I was under the impression it only came with the 'first print' edition of the game??

I think my biggest problems with the game, as a huge Star Fox fan, are less centered around the controls and more the general framing of the levels. I felt like there was a lot more All-Range mode levels than in 64. Those were the weakest part of 64, and I wasn't happy to be doing a lot of that here. Second, even the rail shooting missions seemed less centered on dodging obstacles and more centered on using the camera to shoot. It's a shift from what was a more interesting gameplay mechanic to a less interesting one. Sure, Fortuna and Sector Gamma were pretty great, but they felt short as both ended with fairly long boss battles. And these are really the only two levels that come to mind.

Not a lot of the reviews really went into the meat of the game and why it's a disappointing Star Fox game. Most of them just focused on the controls which, while they're a pain, you can get used to them. It's that the controls shifted the focus of the game to something less interesting than what StarFox could be about.

I liked the look and flow of the rail shooting levels a lot, but like I said because they were designed around the gyro/dual aim/dual camera thing they suffered in execution.

Salvadora is really nice too. All secret bosses are really good IMO, and well worth finding alternative paths. (Although I said the same about Star Fox Command...)

Enjoying the game, but not so much the controls. The controls are not bad, but it was super frustrating trying to beat Star Wolf, and I ended up failing (well, "completing" instead of "accomplishing") a mission because I couldn't get Wolf in time.

Also, I hate using the left stick to turn and the right stick to strafe in the Landmaster. It's backwards from the "normal" way, and it's especially annoying since in the new hover vehicle the controls are actually the "normal" way (at least as far as I remember), so switching between them isn't fun.

That said, even though I'm only a big fan of Star Fox on SNES and i wasn't too happy with Star Fox 64, I'm having a lot of fun with this game, more than with the SF64. I just beat Titania
where you had to save Peppy
.

I really hope I grow into the controls, though, because this is a really great game. To be fair, I do see the benefit of the controls, but I'm still not a big fan of them.

Salvadora reminds me
the second mission of Rogue Leader
but ala Starfox, It's clearly
a Star Destroyer with the design directly taken from Star Fox 2
, A lot of this game has
star wars vibes
like Sector β we have never experienced something like this in the past starfox games.

or barrel rolls being a double input in the analog stick, which is a horrendously clunky input to have such an import thing mapped to.

As someone who has really enjoyed what I've played of Star Fox Zero so far, this is by far the worst part of the controls for me. Even if I input "left, right" instead of "right, right" on the analog stick, it still feels really bad. The barrel roll should have absolutely been mapped to a button somehow.

Completed the third mission and I have to say that the controls are not an issue for me at all. In fact, they work as intended to help you get a more precise shot. In fact, the controller aiming was the only way I could beat
Pigma
as trying to do it the regular way was too imprecise and very difficult to land a hit. I wanted to hate these controls and a part of me still wants to but I can't lie, it's easy and convenient. It's like having a PC mouse that doesn't take up an extra hand while still having your regular controls at the same time. My only gripe is the barrel roll being on the stick instead of the bumpers. I guess I have no choice but to get used to it.

Loving the game as well though. This is what I've been craving from Star Fox for the last 20 years. I can't wait to dig in for more tomorrow.

What is it with people not reading the OP?...

To be honest I'm a pretty big fan of Starfox and have avoided all media up until when I posted in this thread. OPs sometimes have too much info and are spoilerish when on a blackout. The reply I got was helpful and I didn't need to risk spoiling anything which is why I like Neogaf, I can safely put up my complaints and within no time get valuable and helpful responses without risking spoilers. Fussy? Yes, but that's me.

I tried the suggested option and it's a huge improvement, I'm enjoying the game a lot more now for what it is.

Takes 3 times damage, deals double laser damage and always has access to the double charge shot from the hyper laser upgrade on the normal arwing. You'd be surprised at how much it increases the intensity.
No wonder level 2 was so hard for me. Lol

Sorry to hear that. I agree with you on a lot of it and I wish the barrel rolls were the way it was on SNES and N64, it's very clunky on the stick. It used to feel so good to just hit the bumpers and dodge at the same time. I don't think I'll be able to do it the same way with Zero, or at least it won't feel the same.

All minor issues imo, compared to the overall quality, the trash we've had to wade through and how long we've had to wait. It's not perfect but we finally got a decent one.

I used to play SF64 all the time too, it was one of my all time favorite N64 games.

As much as I wanted a SF64 style game at the time, I actually did appreciate all the different stuff that Star Fox Command had in it (even if it wasn't all great). The overhead map strategy parts, the different characters and ships to play as, and the way it did the branching story.

But when I bought SF64 3D, I think that was when I realized I may have played it a bit TOO much of that game on the N64. It was definitely a great looking remake, but I really only played through it once on the 3DS and felt no need to play it more, and at a full $40 price it definitely didn't feel worth it to me. Maybe it was the circle pad not feeling as good as an analog stick, or maybe it was the changed voice acting that didn't tickle my nostalgia at all.

I just don't feel like I have control over where I'm aiming, and when I do, I don't have conrol over where the ship is flying. I feel like I'm fighting the controls rather than the game, which really sucks because the game itself is awesome, but not enjoyable due to this stupid aiming crap.

For the love of God I hope we somehow get a classic control scheme somehow patched in. Starfox holds a special place in my heart, and not having any real CO trol in this game is killing me inside.

That's not happening, man. Let it go.

People are comparing this to kid icarus uprising? the controls are that bad? That comparison alone is putting me off and I am glad I didn't impulse pre-order,

Neither this nor Kid Icarus Uprisings controls are bad.

1-800-255-3700 or organize something online to shame them. That'll get it fixed fast.

Giving a deaf person a phone number and suggesting an online shame-campaign are two classy moves.

What is it with people not reading the OP?...

For once this is something I didn't really cover. Because I know nobody reads it anyway :P

All the reviews seem harsh on the controls, but I have a question about it (since I can't pick this game up right now).

As someone that really enjoys The World Ends With You (dual screen battle system with different characters per screen) and Kid Icarus Uprising, is this comparable to those? What I mean by this is that they may seem daunting at first, then you get to a point where it "clicks" and you realize this control scheme is amazing. That was the impression I got from the videos.

The thing is that this plays exactly like old Star Fox only with the added ability to have superior precision aiming in a zoomed in view on the GamePad screen (which can be instantly moved to the TV with "-" btw). There's nothing that really needs to click even. You just play Star Fox.

First completion of Adventure mode and I really enjoyed it.
I can't hear the music that well though, am I the only one? The sound effects coming from everywhere and voices on the Gamepad seem a bit too high in comparison (even with the sound lowered on Gamepad), but maybe that's just me.

So... let's compare our score lists!

I kind of felt the same. Playing with headphones definitely helps - the game balances music, SFX and voices perfectly when they come through a single audio channel.

Pretty much this. Obviously the second screen and motion is essential for chasing high scores but I can only think of three times you really need to use both screens at once; Aquarosa, Fichina boss, final boss.

I think most people's issue seem to be coming from multi tasking the screens during target mode. When really you are meant to mainly use cockpit view during these segments, with an occasional glance at the TV to dodge a bosses slow and obvious attack (or swap the screens around).

You can essentially ignore the second screen for most of the game. I mean, you will be missing out massively on expanded gameplay opportunities but it's perfectly possible.

Regarding the gyro, people just need to remember not to wave the GamePad around like a lunatic, it only needs slight movements.

I must be getting better at the controls, because I died repeatedly on a couple missions in my Story Mode playthrough, but managed to make it all the way through Arcade Mode without dying on my first run.

So are the controls much different than Splatoon?
There seemed to be a lot of reviewers lamenting gyro - personally that might be one of the reasons I buy it eventually. Also Platinum shooter sounds very tempting.

I don't think it's the gyro that's the issue, it's how unintuitive it is to use the two screens in this way.

I mean the godly players in Splatoon are able to utilize both screens - I'm alright but not good at multitasking :) I'm guessing SFZ is somewhat similar in that regard. Just want confirmation let me know Splatoon pps

Between reviews and the impressions I'm seeing here and elsewhere I'm really glad I cancelled my pre order. I adore Starfox and Starfox 64, and even when things were looking grim in the preview phases I wanted to hold out that this game would be awesome.

Played it a little, do not like the controls at all and when I got used to them I found the game underneath to be at best inconsistent, and at worst really bland. I'm really glad I didn't buy it.

Not intending to hop in the OT and rain on anyone's parade. If anything I want to say how jealous I am that those who enjoy it have a new Star Fox game for the first time in forever to play and enjoy. I'm disappointed that Nintendo chose to be so risky and alienating with a franchise that was already so close to death.

After the playing for around six hours last night, I'm really torn. The motion controls really require a steep learning curve and can sometimes be frustrating in certain levels. At the same time most levels are fun and well designed. Also I might be one of the few ones that digs the cockpit like audio on the gamepad.

The second screen is definitely the big hang-up here, IMO. You just have such a low viewing range that seems forced upon by the second screen, which gives you better viewing angles and more of them.
