The design of the levels (except the gyrocopter, what even was that) and all is great, but the controls just make everything a chore. They aren't unusable or anything, but it doesn't feel intuitive at all, I want to just sit back and enjoy the game but I feel like I have to focus on the controls. I don't even have problems with gyro controls, I love Splatoon and played through most of RE Revelations and did tons of runs in 643D with gyro. You can sort of play it like 64 without the dual aim, but it's a huge handicap because even outside of the parts where the game forces you to use it, everything is arranged in such a way that makes it not ideal.
Outside of the gyro there are just things that are bad, maybe it was my analog stick but it was basically impossible to boost without the arwing immediately jerking 90 degrees left or right, which pretty much takes precision maneuvering out of the equation, or barrel rolls being a double input in the analog stick, which is a horrendously clunky input to have such an import thing mapped to. I'm not even a stickler for controls, one of my favorite games is Armored Core For Answer and that's like carpal tunnel the game.
Idk, maybe it's because I played 64 to the point that it was second nature, but I feel like I don't have anywhere close to that control in this.
Also having to switch between 3rd person/TV and 1st person/gamepad is distinctly reminiscent of Other M's missile aiming and if I had to pick one thing from that game that shouldn't be evoked, it's that.
Edit: It's worth mentioning that Star Fox is my favorite Nintendo franchise. I love all the games, even Adventures, and not liking this is killing me.
