Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Judging by the responses on here and my own opinion it really seems like a love it or hate it game. Personally I can't stand the controls its not about getting used to it, I don't find it fun to constantly be looking back and forth between the TV and the gamepad and then getting hit because I'm trying to fucking aim at something on the gamepad and can't see anything but whats directly in front of me. As I said in my previous post I would love a whole game like this built around using the Arwing but the landmaster and Gyro sections are just boring and boss fights are super tedious.

Then as well I really kinda of hate that its yet another remake of Star Fox 64 (except worse) its the same story with an 'expanded' plot (I use expanded as a joke there is more detail given but pretty much none of it is fleshed out at all) I don't think I would mind this as much but we JUST had a remake of Star Fox 64 on the 3DS a few years ago. I guess its more so how much stuff is reused from Star Fox 64 that bothers me more then anything else, several of the levels have large sections that are exactly the same as Star Fox 64, they are still repeating the same lines except several characters are much... nicer (I guess you could say) then before like Falco isn't nearly as much of a jerk as before, ect. It's really feels like they wanted to remake 64 and didn't think that was good enough so they just changed certain things and added in new gimmicks to change up the gameplay but nothing is as fun as being in the Arwing during the on rails segments and you really don't do enough of that in this game.

The one on
Venom
where they
transform with their own Walker equivalents
. I should've seen that coming, but it led to a fantastic duel unlike anything I was anticipating.

I really like that fight, though I think I prefer
the lone wolf fight on fichina, I think the atmosphere is beautiful, the fight is nearly impeccably balanced, you have similar HP, moves aside you get bombs and he gets the lighting tornado which deal similar amounts of damage. It's a rival fight that feels like a genuine battle of equals, in other games this would be easy, but Wolf is always tense because of his fantastic AI.
.

I've been playing bits since Friday night and I just love it, if you are on the fence just buy the game, it's Fox's comeback!

I need to finish Dark Souls 3 to properly play this forever.

I really thought I was going to control the Gigarilla. Seemed like an obvious place to implement the Project Giant Robot stuff at

Sometimes I get so focused on the GamePad (which is probably the most fun use of motion controls on the system, btw) that I forget to look at the TV, and when I do I'm surprised to see all of these crazy cinematic camera angles, lol. It's so cool. :-)

Hmm...
I don't recall that fight, but there's plenty of sections in the score list that I haven't unlocked yet. But of the fights I've had with Star Wolf so far, the one on Venom has been my favorite, especially because it's a raw test of skill with both vehicles and knowing when to use each appropriately
.

Finished my first Arcade run. Probably not that great a score, but ah well. Just went the default route.

That's impressive number of hits IMO!

What's an arcade run?

It's a mode which opens once you beat the main game for the first time. No stage select, one continue/level restart max (and you have to earn it!), and when you fail the mission, you have to start all over - I mean, all over from Corneria.

My favourite aspect of that fight was
chasing them through the death star style trenches that run across the planetoid. It's especially tense when you're chasing one guy, and another gets into the trench behind you but you can't somersault because of the laser barrier above the trench.

When you beat the game, you unlock arcade mode, which is a straight playthrough of the game like classic Star Fox. The game tracks all 19 possible runs, so there are 19 possible maximum scores.
Arcade Mode sounds awesome!

And if you defeat someone in a trench, you'll get a medal! :P

I've only had time to boot up the game and finish the training so far, but Jesus.... the controls feel exactly the way I expected them to. And I mean that in the worst possible way. It feels like trying to play two different games at once. I really couldn't stand how the camera locks onto targets and leaves your ship flying off in directions you can't see in. I'm assuming it'll get better with practice and I've yet to see how the actual missions play with this scheme, but my first impression is the worst case scenario; that all the bad news about the game was completely right.

"Motion controls while pressing ZR" might help you a bit. I advise starting to play with it, then try to move on to full motion from time to time as long as you start beating high scores.

While the TV camera goes into "cinematic view", watch the GamePad screen (so you can see the direction you are flying in) and use the TV as a rear mirror of sorts. This will help you with boss fights and all-range dogfights.

Also, play other Training Mode missions.

You are supposed to use the cockpit view during these moments. Only occasional glancing at the TV to get an idea about your surroundings. I think the game even encourages you to swap the cockpit view onto the TV when it happens.

I'm about half way through it all. I'm really digging being in cockpit mode and looking around in the free range mode. The controls are right up my alley and I'm a big fan. This is a lot of fun. I like having this amount f control.

Polygon can go fuck themselves for their review.

Some of the time medals are ridiculous, Salvadora had me sweating blood, is like they want you to buy the amiibo.

Wanted to go back to Corneria and not move on until I get the gold. Took me 3 tries, yay.

What's the most effective run to get over 300?

Edit: also played co-op and wow it's a co-op experience I've never had before. I mean that in a good way. I felt like I was at the arcade with my buddy.

Every game is like that. Even Devil's Third had that. The honeymoon phase is a real thing.

That I'll concede. Hell, this is one of the most divisive OTs I've seen for a Nintendo game. Man, if there was only a demo...Demos sold me on the likes of Wonderful 101 and Splatoon, come on, Ninty.

I am loving it so far, and I've had absolutely no problems with the controls. Here's a few thoughts so far (I just finished Zoness).

The landmaster is probably going to be my favorite vehicle to control aside from the Arwing if that training stage is any indication.

I love that bosses have multiple ways to defeat them. I even accidentally found the first bosses secret weak point on my first run through the level!

The gyrowing is surprisingly fun. I expected to hate it based on pre-release videos but I had a blast in Zoness. I even got the high score medal on my first try!

The music and sound design are amazing. This game just begs for headphones.

This is the first great SF game since 64.

I'm really liking this game, shame reviews blasted it for the controls mostly. I think the controls are rather novel and add to the replayability while raising the skill floor and ceiling, this is one of the less hand holdy games Nintendo has released and I can appreciate that.

I see the one man hype machine Neiteio has hit this thread with the power of positivity.

I can understand the divisiveness with this title, I almost feel that as far as alternative control schemes go this game is almost deceptive with just how useful making use of both screens is to the whole experience. It can be frustrating as heck when you're overwhelmed and trying to figure out the best way to approach certain bosses (The Aquarosa battle was bugging me more than figuring out Andross, that thing hits hard!) but when you do finally grasp it it's like "oooohhhh that's what they were going for here". At time's it's just not all that intuitive and I'm caught in between thinking that I would've just rather had a more straightforward entry for that arcade classic feel, on the other hand sometimes I embrace the gimmicks and think actually this is pretty cool and you end up doing stuff that isn't replicated in any other game.

Since the WiiU is a dying console with a controller that never got to live its gimmick as much as it planned I'm pretty okay with this being like a testing ground for all sorts of antics, I just hope we get a successor that builds off the stuff that works here for a more standard game in the future.

In a way this game is similar to Assault, It needed more on rails stuff and instead ended up with more all range mode antics but at least the all range stuff is noticeably better than 64.

Dear Nintendo,

I'd spend money on DLC for Kat's ship.

Also, give me a dedicated button to make the "meow" sound.

Thanks, and tell Slippy I love him.

Sincerely,

I love me some divisive games.

Can't wait to go in with an open mind and find another unfairly criticized, spectacular game like RE6.

I hope.

The dogfights in this game are INTENSE. I've only fought Pigma so far, but I hear that later on you fight all of Team Star Wolf by yourself? That sounds impossible, but I'm eager to try it.

Oh, and the slow-mo when Pigma passes you on the screen is amazing. And I don't know if I imagined it but I felt like there was a bass drop in there. Certainly felt like it.

Game has so much OOMPH.

It was actually easier without all the other "noise," I found. Don't worry. :)

But not "boring" easy but "more fun" easy. :D

And yea, it does the slow-mo sound thing (not a bass drop) when someone passes you during a dogfight scenario. Can happen with anyone of them btw, not just Pigma. You have to pass them real close, it's not scripted.

Lol trust me, nobody wishes there was a demo for the game more than me. I hope it sells well enough for Nintendo to keep the series alive, but hopefully they don't focus so much on these controls so much. Even if it means keep Miyamoto away from the game.

Protip: while somersaults and U-turns made by flicks of the sticks are my most hated control aspect (because they can be triggered against one's will), tricks made with sticks are performed way faster then the same tricks made by X and B buttons.

I really thought I was going to control the Gigarilla. Seemed like an obvious place to implement the Project Giant Robot stuff at

While it sounds fun, showing four vehicles into one level would be an overkill. Area 3 is perfectly balanced in this regard as is.

Well maybe that was the plan at one point or an idea they had but just couldn't figure out how to make fun with their schedule. I hope it resurfaces!

And if you defeat someone in a trench, you'll get a medal! :P

:O

That's one thing I find "annoying" if you wanna use the word. I often hear a medal/power-up/ring appear somewhere form something I did but then a lot of the time I can't seem to find it in the heat of the moment. :/

I've always wanted Kat's ship....during this game I keep thinking "surely, this time foxy boy".

So...looking at some of the posts on the last page or so, looks like some of you are enjoying this game. Is Dan Ryckert from Giant Bomb just full of shit and completely wrong about the quality of this game? He talks about how maybe Star Fox was never that great because of how similar this is the SF64, but I have such fond memories of 64.

If you like Star Fox and don't hate motion controls I think you'll like this game.

Yes.

This is not a game you look up reviews for. This is a game you seek out player impressions.

This feels like a huge evolution from 64 to me. It requires skill to learn and engages all your attention to do well. It's incredibly engaging and mentally satisfying for me to play.

I did read that review, I'll just say that guy and myself don't approach things similarly 🤔

IMO, he's wrong. This game is great! Multiple plays to take different routes are a must, and it's just as fun as the first.

Only real downside I have is no fighting other players or doing Co-Op levels with more than one Arwing which would have been crazy..
