Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Huh, my full impressions are going to take a very long time to compile as I am going through all the levels in the most detail I can.

I only just finished the presentation portion.

Also I can understand why the Black Arwing is behind medal unlocks, it totally breaks the balancing on said medals.

I've been playing around with the retro arwing, and it feels slightly different considering that there is no lock on. It actually gives a taste of what expert score running is like, using indirect charge shot explosions to rack up bonus points.

Wow that difficulty spike. Things were going well until I hit
Sector Omega and experienced my first set of deaths in a row. The boss for that level is annoying as well. Took forever to get the last few hits in because I couldn't get clear shots at the inside of the ship. Heading back to Corneria has been a repeat of Sector Omega when it comes to deaths
and I'm stuck right now. It's not even an issue of control. There are just to many damn enemies on the screen. Also there is a significant amount of slow down at the beginning of this level as well. Extremely noticeable. It slows to a crawl.

Yeah, mixing the Water effects with the many explosion alpha effects do not a good framerate make. And yeah, very odd difficulty spike there but reasonable as the levels are still on curve I feel.

If you haven't read the entire thread yet...

Use the alternate control scheme. It makes it so that gyro only activates when you press ZR.

Maybe this will help my problem too, but quick question. Is there a way to recalibrate the connection between the gamepad and the system? When I hold the gamepad straight in front of me, the game thinks I'm holding it upwards...

Click the left-stick in

Or Y button, like in Splatoon.

You can shoot bars connecting parts of the ship too.

Game beaten

Here's a final level secret/spoiler:
Left, Right, Right, Left

Score?

hmm...

7/10

I hate the Walker controls, and honestly the controls are really poorly thought out. There is a way this game could control better without them doubling up almost every single action in the game. If they did that, the game's like...an 8.5/10. If they managed to fix the dual-screen stuff it'd be even better.

So the one sorta retcon I don't really like is changing pigma from being an actual member of the star fox team to just a hired gun, it makes a slightly deeper plot point into one in which the people were just being idiots in a boring trope

I'd argue Pigma being a loyal, trusted friend for years that turned heel never really fit his character. He just never came across as someone who could be that.

If this is about the intro scene, I didn't think he wasn't a member of Star Fox, I just thought he insisted on going because he arranged the trap. He's shown wearing a matching jacket, and flying an Arwing, so I assumed he was still part of the crew.

I think it works fine if you think of his character as morally grey, especially since they're mercs which is a job That by definition is morally ambiguous

Yea that kinda confused me, maybe it's implied he was still part of the team or maybe it's something lost in translation

Question: Can you co-op the whole game from the get go? Or do you need to beat a level once before being able to co-op it?

Try clicking the Left Stick, or pressing Y.

This was in the very beginning tutorial sequence when you first boot the game up. If you need to replay it again, it's under Tutorials and Arwing (bottom option).

Yeah, that's an odd thing that should get patched. It goes into single player automatically only for when you visit the planet for the first time. Simply start the level, pause, then hit select new stage, select the stage you were playing and choose co-op.

He always just came to me as somebody who did it for the money. It just turns out he was under Andross' pocket all along, be appeared trustworthy to James.

Is it just me or is Sector Gamma bugged? Im pretty sure I got all 5 medals, but it's only showing 4...

Otherwise, the controls clicked with me surprisingly well, its good to finally be enjoying a Star Fox game again!

- too much all range mode

This was my main gripe as well. I get that the gamepad controls were basically made for all-range mode, and it did make it alot better, but there was still too much of it. Star Fox is really at its best as an on-rails shooter. Adding gameplay variety doesn't necessarily innovate with value in all circumstances. Still probably my favorite in the series since 64.

I didn't have problems with the controls though. I liked them. If anything they made somersaults and U-turns incredibly easy with the one-button options.

So like if I boot up the game for the first time...after I start on Corneria I can exit out and switch to co-op and then I'm good for the entire game? Or do I need to effectively beat it on single player first?

Is there an alternate way to do a barrel roll? Because just quickly flicking the right stick to the side twice in a row feels terrible and is really hard to pull off properly sometimes

I can't remember if it asks if you're doing single player or coop right at the start but for every stage you unlock it for whatever reason throws you in it the first time in single player. All you have to do is just exit out and select it again from the map and the coop option will be there. It's a bit tedious and backwards, but long story short you can indeed go through the game in coop on the first run.

Remember that the medals have to be picked up in-game when earned.

After you've seen the intro cut scene to a planet for the first time like Corneria (no need to even beat the stage), once you have control you can simply quit the level and re-enter with the option to pick single player or co-op for that planet. That's really it. Any time after that, you can pick co-op any time you want and also skip intros.

Fucking hell, Andross is hard as balls. Not sure how many phases he has but I can only destroy one of his hands before getting completely owned.

He has three phases. Both hands and then just his head. Just his head is super easy though, it's just pattern recognition for the most part.

save your bombs for the second phase with only one hand (and/or hope that you get hyper lasers like I did). Err on the side of caution rather than blasting lasers to the last moment. Use barrel rolls while locked on (simple flick of the stick) and transforming into the arwing to evade. I barrel rolled for punches and hand swipes, while I transformed fairly quickly for clap attacks, sometimes downward hand swipes too. Transform and escape if a hand is destroyed, and use your TV to watch for lasers during the arwing portion outside. Bombs or hyper lasers become vital for the one-hand tractor beam because otherwise you won't get it in time.

Third phase is super easy because it's just strafing and shooting. Arwing transform when he's knocked out, get behind him, and shoot from the walker.

Slightly off topic, but didn't Starfox 64 3D become a Nintendo Select late last year? Strange because it's still $39.99 from the eShop and $40-$100 online, even used. UGH!

So...looking at some of the posts on the last page or so, looks like some of you are enjoying this game. Is Dan Ryckert from Giant Bomb just full of shit and completely wrong about the quality of this game? He talks about how maybe Star Fox was never that great because of how similar this is the SF64, but I have such fond memories of 64.

The problem is that most reviewers can't be arsed to learn non-traditional, new control schemes with a rather high execution barrier, unless you are a character action game or a fighting game (and even those are criticized for it).

They'd rather slap a mediocre score at the end than give it the benefit of the doubt and dive further into the game to see if it was their lack of skill or understanding of the systems than the game not working properly.

I won't be surprised if this is a Skyward Sword, Kid Icarus,The Wonderful 101 and Twilight Princess HD's horse controls situation all over again.
