Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Bro, you tell me where in Houston, I will be there

PMd you

I know, right?

Fuck me for being excited for the single player and then being ultimately disappointed by it.

People need to understand that AKyemeni's disappointment is completely fine because this game will inevitably disappoint some people.

The pacing is weird.

The exploration segments can drag, the set pieces are very humble in scope to the highlights of previous games, and the gun combat is so good that going long stretches without it (which the game does have) can feel a little frustrating and impatient to some people . And some of the open level design can impede the pacing too.

And some people will feel impatient at how long it takes to get into full Uncharted combat given the extensive opening.

Finally, the majority of cutscenes have little to no humor. The wit is all in the partner AI banter, but the cutscenes are usually very serious affairs. Some people may or may not like this tone.

This game is undoubtedly divisive in some of the design decisions.

I pesonally prefer U2's pacing overall and the more steady flow of combat situations. I think the balance in exploration and combat and banter there was exquisite.

I still love it though. The story is great and the platforming is much better designed here.

I have no doubt some people will find UC4 dissapointing. But the amount that will think Golden Abyss had a better story, you'll probably be able to count on one hand.

Just saw that Amazon email. I really REALLY hope mine doesn't get delayed.
I'll be livid if mine is delayed. I packed up my PS4 to sell to my brother since I'm getting the bundle. So if it gets delayed I'll be stuck with no PS4.

Went into GAME today, all the sealed copies of the the standard edition and the SE edition of UC4 were out as well as the LE console... Really really wanted to take the game home. I did purchase the controller though.

On the set pieces, I guess they aren't as big as past games but this game makes every set piece feel far more impact gun and dangerous.

So many oh fuck or holy shit moments

I loved the pacing.

Also, this is the first Uncharted with a door end game and even doper boss fight.

I'm kind of bummed that I can't play as other character skins in the SP though.....really liked some of the outfits Rafe wears.

F U C K Y O U

last time i ever pre-order anything from amazon.
If you pre-ordered the CE or the Steelbook one and have a Best Buy near you check the pre-order in-store pickup your store might still have a bunch available.

Amazon did this shit to me this morning and i canceled it and did in-store pickup for the steelbook edition for tuesday.

Amazon just changed the delivery estimate for my Libertalia edition to May 12.

I am ok with this since I am still getting it for $95.99.

Damn, it sucks for some of the Amazon folks. They've been getting increasingly unreliable for me as well.

Neither of the past 4-5 games shipped and arrived on time.

It's weird, Amazon canada shipped my game two days ago and it's out for delivery now. I've never had Amazon deliver a game early but they decided to for this one. Yay for me I guess.

I'm not asking for wall-to-wall action, but balance and if UC4 can provide a great balance I'll be super excited. IMO Left Behind did not have a good balance and I have replayed LOU way more than the DLC. I think a perfect example of balance is when Ellie is in the woods hunting the deer, or when they are walking through the college. I think a bad example is the first three or four hours of LOU when there is a little too much plank walking and ladder moving. I don't mind slow, but there is good pacing and bad pacing if that makes sense.

My response, too.

For the medium to move forward, we need this shit.

It's not going to go quietly though. There are people who just can't see how character/story informs gameplay and any studio that thinks of those two first are always going to met with scepticism. Which is odd considering the only developers that seem to fully embrace it have produced the best two games in the last 20 years.

It's not like Left Behind. It's not even like TLOU in pacing but that's the better comparison.

If there are quieter moments executed as well as those in Left Behind - than this game has the possibility of being GOAT tier for me. Left Behind was fantastic.

One thing I recommend people not do is do excessive treasure hunting - at least on first playthrough. With the game being more open and treasures hidden very sneakily, it's easy to see how that would negatively impact the pacing and hurt the flow of the story.
Thankfully I don't care about trophies and collecting hidden treasures, so it should be easy to resist all those extraneous stuff.

Gotcha, thanks for responding. I actually want variety even though if the combat is great, it will be frustrating going hours without it, but good gameplay variety can never hurt.

Theres probably only one stretch without significant combat and it's not super long (as in its not 2 hrs) unless your really exploring.

I don't want to make definitive statements on it since we've had such varied completion times. I'll just say, if you play it as old UC as in point A to point B, that time between combat is significantly shorter. There's some large spaces sure, but everything is designed to funnel you in towards the goal. For example, in the Jeep section shown to the media with the volcano, you don't really have to get out of the jeep except to partake in combat. You can easily play it as a point A to B driving section with how it's designed.

Cool, I like the sound of that.

So this is the most beautiful game I have ever played. I think I am nearing the end I can safely say that Naughty Dog has the best engineers, artists and level designers in the industry. I am constantly blown away going from area to area and seeing how many different routes there are but also how detailed and dense the environments are. This is easily my favorite uncharted game but also one of my favorite games of all time.

The kill count thing is kinda hard to judge since it doesnt reset when you die or anything. I now Kotaku had 737 kills, but it also took him 17 hours to beat it on Normal, so he probably died plenty. Then I know some people beat it on Hard, which has more enemies, or different enemies like rocket launcher people in addition to the snipers in Madagascar.

So I probably already know the answer (FINISH THE SERIES WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!) but someone who hasn't finished the series but enjoys jumping in when games are brand new (epsecially MP) would it be okay to read or watch video about some of Uncharted 3 and jump into this on Tuesday? How much will I miss story wise from jumping into 4, too much to not keep up or not tied together a ton?
