So, Polygon 'playing' Doom...

man this is painful. I think we've all got that one friend who loves games but really really sucks at them, and watching them play is like pulling teeth... this is it.

The person playing the videogame looks like it's never played an FPS before.

It's pretty shitty from the OP to create this kind of thread without providing any context. Is the person playing a reviewer? Is it his/her first time playing a videogame?

Just seems like a thread created to shit on Polygon. especially the way playing is conveyed in the thread title.

But hey, you got your 19 page-thread. Kudos, kid.

I think this whole issue, while hillarious, is being overblown for the reasons you cited. A lot of people have leapt to conclusions without evidence (the video was made by a reviwer! Their reviewers don't know how to play the game!).

But it's BS to call out the OP for not "providing" information that he doesn't have, or for having the nerve to comment on a public video that Polygon released on their own YouTube channel in order to advertise the game. They intended for people to watch it and to comment on it, and they provided no context of their own to explain the performance of the person demonstrating the game. Discussion about any subject would be impossible if you insist, as a prerequisite, that everyone possess perfect information.

Polygon ain't making a commercial. If it looks bad, it's because of the game.

It's sad, because for so long people lamented highly-scripted E3 demos. And now when we get Normal Gameplay from a Normal Player, it must suck because of the guy playing.

Edit: for what it's worth, it doesn't look bad to me from this gif. I think those of you that think it makes the game look bad are overreacting/projecting. Just because you cringe at someone playing a game poorly doesn't mean everyone does.

It's not the game that looks bad! it's the shitty way they're playing it. You think the game doesn't allow you to use both sticks at the same time? and this is not a "Normal" player. Looks like on of those elders react videos!

6:20 is even more impressive.

Oh wow. Really, that looks like when you start using controller in FPS for the first time.
Don't understand people who say it doesn't matter. When you go to a camera site and someone reviews the newest high end model, i certainly would expect that that person is well experienced in using this stuff / photography. If the person only makes photos with his smartphone and only tries the camera in auto mode, people would question why he is reviewing that model at all.

Doom Review cons: "weak gunplay/gameplay", "game is to hard on easy" :)

Seems like a non issue to me. If it is the reviewer playing, then he or she at least is providing evidence of how they experienced the game. If it is someone else capturing the footage, then there is even less to comment on. I'm sure you can watch other people play the game much more competently, if that's what you're into.

Better yet, get the game for yourself and make your partner's panties sopping wet by showing the how fucking good you are at playing video games.

Wait...you're saying that he sucks? He misses about 5 times in 30 minutes and is constantly moving. I would say that he is playing way above an average player in that video (aside from constantly trying to open doors that he doesn't have the key card for).

I think we experience time differently, I think you meant 30 seconds not minutes :P

I mainly play strategy RPGs, and I typically suck at shooters. I feel like I'm watching myself trying to a play a shooter when I watch this.

The video is pretty amazing and the person playing seems totally inept at using two analogue sticks (I didn't watch it all; do we know which platform this is on?), but if it's not the person reviewing it I don't really see the problem. It was, however, a very poor choice of someone to stream the game and put it on their YouTube account.

I used to think it mattered when I'd see Giantbomb or whoever play and they'd be awful, but reading their coverage of games I've never thought 'they have no fucking clue what they're talking about' and that's the important part.

I don't really care if someone is good at fighting games, for example. So long as they understand what makes them good and what makes them bad and can convey whether or not the game in question is column A or column B, I don't give a fuck if they can't do a special cancel to save their life.

There's a solid chance they were eating whilst playing, that's how I play when I have a burger in one hand and my mayo coated other one is doing the shooting.

Soooo...the fact that Polygon pointed out that a video game tried to show you the horrors of Nazi concentration camps first hand is bad...how?

Do you seriously think it's appropriate to say that a videogame simulation represents the actual experience of being a witness to the Nazi death camps?

It's like a website that professionally reviews bikes gave the latest model to someone that can't ride to show its performance off in a video xD,
I say professional in the loosest sense this is polygon were talking about

I didn't think Polygon could get any more embarrassing.

What type of people do they hire to play and review games? Is this player a video journalist hired through Craigslist? Why can't he uses both hands in tandem with one another?

Lmao. Sorry but if you get paid to review games, you should at least know how to play them. Or else how is said person qualified to complain about for example controls?

I also don't care if someone is good or not. But this video is something else. The fundamentals of using a controller seem to not be there. Someone with this level of competency (i.e none) should not be anywhere near a game like this for the purposes of a website apparently for 'gamers'.

This reminds me of playing Resistance 3 after I had broke two fingers on my left hand.

Actually scratch that my thumbs were fine so it was less awful.

People are acting like this is how people normally play FPS games...it's like it's the first time the player has picked up the controller!

Who knows who the person is though...and frankly who cares? It's not like reviewers' opinions matters all that much.

Says the guy on a 20 pages discussion about reviewers on polygon

Obviously a lot of people on GAF care

No review thread would be 100 pages long if the reviewers opinions didnt matter, and i found that the people calling to ignore reviewers are the ones that care the most.

Monster Factory is some of the best content on the internet right now, sorry.

*searches for Monster Factory on YouTube*
*clicks on Dark Souls 3 video*
*the guys are trying to focus on the crotch of a character*
*focus on the butt*
*someone says "praise the buns"*
*closes YT video, will never watch again*

not my cup of tea

I used to intern for a video game magazine. Usually those "First 30 min of sth" are made by interns. Maybe it is different for big gaming sites like Polygon.

My girlfriend is playing Far Cry Primal right now and it's her first time really digging into an FPS so she's having a hard time. But even she is doing better than this.

This in no way is a normal representation of a normal player playing Doom.

To your edit, I think it's clear that you didn't even bother to watch the video people are commenting on. Are you telling me that people are overreacting to a person who isn't able to move both joysticks at the same time? Because that's what's happening here.

You want to say people are wrong or overreacting but you've not even bother to watch what they are reacting to. How would you know if it's an overreaction?

It's factually an overreaction because the video isn't from a review or even being played by the person doing the review

No different from the millions of gameplay videos on YouTube of people sucking at games

But apparently because it's posted on a game journalism site it's just not cool

I don't give two shits about doom to be honest, but if this was about a game I was actually gonna buy and was interested in coverage in... I'd probably get a decent chuckle at how bad they are and move on to a different site?

I certainly wouldn't post s topic on neogaf about it or go on rants on a message board. There's like a ton of sites and let's players you can get info from why are we so hung up on this one?

Even if it DID make Doom look bad (and anyone who plays games would probably be able to tell it's not the game) why do you care so much? So what if one sloppy ass player makes the game not look appealing? Are you that vested in making sure every single person who sees doom thinks it looks amazing and wants to buy it? Unless you work for Bethesda or ID I would think it's pathetic you cared that much about a games representation on ONE website during a casual live stream

TLDR - there are a lot of things in the game industry and journalism to be upset about, this is not one of them

For me personally, it's not just skill but knowledge that makes me value someone's opinion on a subject.

Not all sports broadcasters are ex pro players but they are professionals, with an interest in the subject and a level of knowledge to go with it.

If a game reviewer doesn't have the most skill at FPS games but has been playing them for years and has a great passion for them backed up with some knowledge then it's alright if they suck a little.

But if you can't play the genre or have no clue how it works, the basics of the game etc then I won't value your review and I'd question why you are reviewing it at all.

I know jack shit about baseball or French cinema or MOBA games and I'd feel very stupid trying to talk about any of them let alone review or talk about them professionally
