So, Polygon 'playing' Doom...

Well done!

I don't understand the problem. This is what all console controller FPS gameplay looks like compared to mouse and k/b gameplay.
When I look at the Polygon footage it looks like someone who's never played an FPS with a gamepad.

It definitely is not what what it looks like for most people. This is below average competency with a controller.

My best guess is that the person recording the footage plays pretty much exclusively mouse and k/b and is struggling with the controller.

Games journalists are people who write about games for a living, not plays them. Sports journalists don't play sports for a living.

That being said, yes this person looks very bad at this game
What?????????
Again what????????
This would be like saying a game reviewer reviews a game by watching someone else play. It's a terrible comparison.

I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about if the guy playing in the video isn't the reviewer, if this was any other site it would be a non issue or a few lols at best.

I think part of it is that Polygon works hard to cultivate a certain veneer of slick professionalism--that their website promotes "the right opinion" when it comes to videogames--only to have it done in by painfully atrocious footage of someone unable to hit point blank shots. It can feel like a betrayal to invest heavily in something and then see footage like this. Imagine that a English teacher was doing some work on the board for everyone and began fumbling some of the most basic elements of syntax. You'd probably get a little tilted and think to yourself "They're paying this person to evaluate student's work?"

If anything, this is an amusing and gentle reminder that we are only human, reviewers aren't infallible and that it should be you that decides what to spend your hard earned dollar on.

I'm watching the beginning and it seems absolutely fine.

What do you find wrong with it?
He dies during the intro which is funny (but he also plays on hard) the rest looks absolutely fine to me.

It would've been just a few lols if the Polygon defense force didn't com me in here trying to insist that it's not funny and not a big deal and perfectly normal.
Yep, the whole thing turned into a strange discussion where some consider it "gatekeeping" that you'd expect a minimum of competence from the people who work for a dedicated gaming site.

There are actually people in this topic trying to make the argument that it shouldn't matter if a professional game reviewer has any skill at actually playing games. This is a thing that is happening.

We deserve every ounce of bullshit the industry (devs and press alike) shovels down our throats if this is what it's come to.
Yea this is astounding to me. What if this person actually was/is the reviewer. Are they just going to leave how the game controls out of their review? Sure they can talk about the visuals or the story but I can do the same damn thing by watching someone play it. You're missing a huge chunk of your review if the person reviewing is as bad as this person seems and doesn't comment on controls. Plus if they do I'd never trust a review from them again.

Right and they shouldn't play video games at all since it is making them biased. Only unbiased journalists , i.e. those without playing experience, can write objective reviews.

Just kidding. I don't understand your standpoint at all.

Sports journalists aren't typically writing for a target audience that's playing sports though, they're writing for people who are watching them. And someone had never seen a football played before they'd probably be a poor choice to write about a football game for a daily newspaper.

Yeah, it's really not a Polygon specific thing. It's especially bad when it comes to racing games. This is from a video of someone at Gamespot playing GT6 at TGS

Has this person ever driven a car? Why do they keep turning the wheel when the road is straight?

Does anyone have the actual video of this? I need to see it now.

This video is why people should play Doom on harder difficulties if they are good at FPS games. There needs to be acfual tension to make the game fun.

well this aint nearly as bad to be fair

I also dont know the context but im more inclined to understand someone having issues with a specificil wheel considering its far more unusual than a controller with 2 sticks we've been using for years
I mean I could see if he was coming out of a turn maybe he lost control but he's on a straight path the whole time and keeps turning the steering wheel. Why??

Yeah for racing games I only trust a very small handful of reviewers who are completely dedicated to racing games. Most people have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

This is actually how GT6 is.. You move the wheeling a hair and you're then all over the road.
We can see him steering tho.

Reviewers should release every achievement they unlock for the game during review sessions. Also, we should have access to long recorded gameplay clips. This would help us understand their experience with the game a lot better.

I play FPS on PC with a KB&M not a dual analog, but that looks atrocious. Its stiff and terrible aiming. Maybe I was that way my first time with dual analog way back on N64 with two controllers in Goldeneye...

But yeah that looks bad.

Now I understand why they seem to always go "against the wave" while reviewing anticipated games.

They simply aren't good enough to enjoy them.

Staring at the floor and spinning around is "showing the game" by those metrics.

They should at least have the ability to move the character around in the 3D environment. The person playing in the Polygon video does not appear to have a handle on basic player movement.

Has this person ever driven a car? Why do they keep turning the wheel when the road is straight?
It's a mixture of them trying to follow the racing line exactly (thus steering the wrong way just to get back to it) and them oversteering because of the delay between the wheel and the car.

Fucking hell people, who cares? Only in the gaming community will we have a 22+ page thread complaining about a guy's playskill based on a single gif.

I guarantee you that I could go through any of your gameplay footage and find less than stellar gameplay.

I have several, super simple explanations for this;

  • It's just one enemy, who among us hasn't just lazilly tried to take out the last enemy in a room?
  • it surprised him
  • up close enemies are really annoying to deal with in FPS games

I have several, super simple explanations for this;

  • Playing a game and talking at the same time is harder than it looks

  • who gives a shit?

Apparently you give a shit.

Apparently you give a shit.

Oh don't give me that "if you don't care why did you post" shtick, you think I'm unaware of the irony? I'm allowed to voice my opinion complaining about people complaining with everyone complaining.

I expect a chef to know how to cook food. I expect a taxi driver should know how to drive. I expect a game reviewer to know how to play games. This isn't rocket science, and many people feel this way it seems.

And I've given several explanations on why this one gif could be the way it is. It's like looking at a gif of a cook messing up a cut of a fish and declaring that they don't know how to cook.

You could just watch the video and see that the moment in the gif isn't just a one of, or hear that there's no one talking over the video.

Also you could read the thread and see that 22 pages aren't just dedicated to complaining about the lack of skill but that a meta discussion formed about if it matters that a reviewer has the basics of playing a game down or not,

Those kind of responses are pretty shit. I'm with you on that one.

It's more than just one gif, it's a whole 30 minute compilation of terrible gameplay.

I did the same thing first time I did a driving simulation. My body doesn't feel the car reacting to my steering like it can in a real car so I instinctually oversteer. I imagine it must take time playing driving simulators with a wheel with a 3rd person camera to get used to that.

Didn't say you weren't allowed, just answering your question.

I get what you mean but they are struggling with the controls for all 30 minutes of the video. And the person isn't talking at the same time. They're just playing. No double tasking being done.

Love it how he doesn't even bother to watch the video, comes in here to shit on people talking about it, then proceeds to tell other people he has a right to his opinion.

Amazing.

Did you see the footage? The whole 30 minutes? Because that's what it's based on, not just that gif. Also, this isn't "less than stellar" gameplay. "Less than stellar" gameplay would be completely fine. This is abysmal gameplay. It's like a person showing you how great this bike is, but he/she doesn't know how to ride a bike.
