Total Biscuit 'gushes about DOOM (4)'s campaign for 20 minutes'

Easily one of the best "pure" FPS titles in the last 5 years and ranks up there with Wolfenstein: The New Orders.

This is a no bullshit "modern" FPS if there every was one.

This game shows what our hobby would look like without "professional" reviews. I've loved what I've seen from the community the past three days. Honest opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of the game without the taint of "Well GameSpot said this!" nonsense.

yeah it has been nice

So far I had more gameplay fun in doom than in uncharted 4. It's just an amazing game.
Uncharted is still amazing! Don't kill me.

Combat arena + Berserk powerup

I think the utilization of melee kills dropping health, chainsaws dropping ammo and the low ammo counts and non-regenerating health is fucking genius.

It is the best FPS since Crysis. So Yeah, let the man gush for about 40 mins even. I mean fuck, I was gushing about it yesterday to a group of non-gamers.

Really is showing we don't need reviews.

Perhaps tangentially related, but there's a Humble Store sale right now and as I opened several games that might interest me on tabs, for each of them I googled "[Game name] NeoGAF". I didn't even think of using Metacritic, even though I'm one of the few here that actually finds value in it.

I never thought I'd ever see John Bain gushing about a new Doom game.
His video is what inspired me to try it and I wasn't disappointed.

the first time someone has ever used Brad as an example of someone playing a video game well

but yeah I'm really glad they are into it. He is a big Doom fan and was positive on the game even when I felt like there was no reason to be.

I think after reading through The Masters of Doom, Brad's appreciation for Doom got to a new level. But yea, important game that is still pretty playable and great book. He did give the new Doom's Beta shit though, just like everyone else. The nicest thing he had to say about that was that it's "Fine, but not what I want from Doom MP". So he's not just a fanboy.

Very pleasantly surprised. This reaction to the campaign has been as positive as a low-key Overwatch. Doom is now on my radar after finishing up a few games.

I'm enjoying single player. It has a silly throwback style but it works and the gameplay shines.

My only issue is that Snapmap is only 4 player. WTF!!!! I have a group of 6-8 that plays together and we picked this up for the party game modes snapmap could provide.

The game is so good. Moving feels good. Shooting feels good. Blasting demons feels good. The music is good. The weapons are good. The chainsaw, my God the chainsaw.

Yeah and in a previous video TB speculated that it's probably shit because nobody got review copies.

It's good to see that he's honest and didn't pretend Doom sucks just to justify his previous thoughts.

How long is SP? Is the story mode good so far?

Well story is like shoot and kill. For lenght, im about 8 hours in and only at stage 5 , but decide at stage 4 to tone down the default difficulty to wimp. Its still a challenge on stage 5 jesus ( and no im not working for Polygon ), this game imo is made to be played with keyboard mouse setup, but playing on the ps4 when you need to have sick reflexes makes it harder.

Im having a blast seriously. Was so sick of finding all FPS boring, this one is a breath of fresh air.

I didn't really like the beta at all. After hearing all the praise though, I rented the game last night night, but now I'm returning it... to go buy a copy. Sheesh, this game is so fun.

The comments about the level design are what really get me excited. I was so worried when the trailers/demos looked so boring and linear.

Not only are the gameplay and soundtrack amazing, but the game has an incredibly charming sense of humor about itself, too. It's kind of a hard game not to like.

still undecided on doom, played the beta and wasnt convinced

From what I've seen, the Single Player is an entirely different beast from the multiplayer. In fact, the latter was developed by a completely different studio.

I haven't played single-player, but the impression I got from the multiplayer was that it felt like a bullet point for a modern FPS. Like Wolfenstein: New Order, they should have just outright excluded multiplayer.

What's funny about this game is its pretty clear that Bethesda thought they had a cluncker on their hands because it doesn't tick any of the modern FPS tickboxes.

no cinematic story
no RPG xp bar
No load out screens
No ads
No sprint
No team mates egging you on
No reload animations

Doom is simple

Here is you gun.
There is your enemy.
Kill.

Alot of games in alot of genres could learn from this approach.

This post needs to be quoted a thousand times. Games releases, actual consumers play the game, read their thoughts to make buying decision. The way things should be. Also made the OT a pleasant place to be versus every other big OT in memory.

A LOT of people thought it'd be shit. Including some SteamGAFfers.
Besides it's become a common suspicion that when a game doesn't have review copies sent, that's a flag that the game may be bad.

Just beat it. Ultra-violence except for the last level where I played on Hurt Me Plenty. Found all but one of the Doom guys. Found all data logs. Found all Retro doom levels. Maxed out upgrades for my guy. I think I'm missing 3 secrets total.

Took me 15 hours. Shooter of the year for sure. It's also my GOTY for now over DS3.

It's not perfect. I was kinda getting tired of the arena fights by the end. Music is a mixed bag. Great in the hell levels but kinda meh otherwise. Sound mixing could be better. Multiplayer is ok I guess. Would of liked a NG+ mode.

With that said, what a refreshing game. I hope there will be single player DLC. I want a new Quake game now.

Bolded are the best parts imo. The CoD model of sprint then play Time Crisis over and over has been done to death, and very limiting in terms of using the environment to your advantage.

I haven't read anything about this game, and I'm quite surprised by what I'm seeing in this video. It has actual level design with exploration and secrets? It's been ages since I've played big budget FPS that isn't either mostly linear or an open world follow the GPS game.

No constant forced cutscenes or story segments either. It's so refreshing to see a mainstream game that doesn't want to be a Hollywood movie.

The game looks like a real return-to-form for the genre. Hopefully the game is successful, and we see other developers follow suit. Maybe I can finally throw the old fpsleveldesign.jpg in the garbage for good.

Ugh wasn't able to pick this up on launch because I was moving out of college that day. Finally picking it up tomorrow and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it.

This sounds great! I loved New Order and Old Blood but the Doom multiplayer beta kind of turned me off preordering. It felt a little meh almost throw away but hearing that the single player is being compared to Wolfenstein has me hyped to play it now as New Order IMO was one of the best single player shooters since Half life 2.

So yeah who would of thought that multiplayer would be the weak spot in a ID game go figure?

Well, the multiplayer wasn't even made by id, right?

I'm sure there was some next-level concern trolling about this game in other threads about how bad it was obviously going to be.
I'm glad people are enjoying it.

The multiplayer beta just did not click with me, but hearing the singleplayer is excellent intrigues. Always the pitfall for me with the fps genre and it's why I stay away.
