Gran Turismo Sport Unveiling live stream discussion (incl. FIA Championship gameplay)

Yup. GTP is a PD PR mouthpiece, nothing more. They wont do anything to upset their privileges which brings in the cash, which is absurd because its to the detriment of the game which is untimely to their detriment.
It would surprise you how power hungry/drunk (unpaid) community moderators can get when they are "working" for the developers.

Is GT Planet a paid a paid Sony/PD partner?

Any organisation that sets their content policy based on the requests of PR departments can be considered a paid partner.

I really wish there was such a thing a game journalism. Some game sites are critical in reviews, but outside of this they all without fail revert to being lapdogs.

Framerate is unlocked during replays in this game. It never hits 60fps, it barely even seems like it hits 30fps some times.

It's "unlocked" but double buffered v-sync, I think. Which means it jumps from 60 directly to 30 as soon as it drops below 60 and then to 20 as soon as it drops below 20, like Witcher 3 PS4 at release.

Basically, it does hit 60 pretty often (it's easy to tell) but it goes back to 30 when the camera angle changes and covers more of the track.

I think DriveClub spoiled me. That game visually is beyond ridiculous. Beautiful at all times with a sense of speed I think unmatched.

Gran Turismo is the driving simulator though. I remember spending over 50 hours just driving the classic Shelby Cobra with no brake or steering assist just because it was so damn insane to drive. One false move and away you went spinning all over the place but treat it just right and you could even pop wheelies with the power of the thing.

I personally play GT for the driving fun factor. The fact that is has been the staple racing game graphically was just icing. Now though? Don't see it being able to out DriveClub visually.

I said, I wanted to do my best to shut up about the sound until a review release or demo shows up, but...

what game have the guys from evo been playing?

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/17760/gran-turismo-sport-preview-the-most-exciting-racing-game-of-2016

Many players also say the same thing though. Some cars seems to sound better than others.

I wonder if they'll still be at Nurburgring 24h this week.

What's the source of this rumor?

Iirc one of the mods teased more reveals at events. I guess the posters just concluded to ToD since its an endurance race.

Didn't someone say the lighting from the sun changed while they played? Must have been on the Nurburgring though.

The same thing happens on many forums, including this one. If an organisation requests it, they will take posts down.

The sort of jittery, low res shadows I've seen in some of the vids suggest it is dynamic. I mean if they don't include dynamic time of day after GT5/6 featured it in some tracks then they really are going backwards.. was one of the best things about GT5 for me, Nordschleife at dawn, slowly getting brighter.

They should absolutely be working on a fully physically based rendering system which means dynamic time of day and weather in all tracks is much easier to implement. Then again looking at the sound situation, we might see that on PS5....

As for GT Planet talk, yeah sadly that Jordan guy is kind of compromised now, the site was/is acting as nothing more than a 'softening blow' arm of PD PR.

I guess Jordan has a difficult balancing act to manage at GTP. You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you, but by the same token you also don't want to be sycophantic and just toe the company line. I bet there's a lot of diplomacy needed when criticism is offered, and (if GTP really is PD's focus group) then it's maybe been done too gently for Kaz to take notice. Having said that, he acknowledged various deficiencies five years ago - he just seems reluctant to do much about them. The audio seems marginally improved, for example, but if that's what launches with the game in November then it's really not good enough in contemporary context.

What does drive me mad on message boards though (GAF sadly included) is blind fanboyism, where any criticism - constructive or otherwise - is dismissed out of hand. Some people seem so emotionally invested in their pet games or developers that they simply refuse to accept what the vast majority of others can see. It's maddening because they don't realise the damage they might be doing to the very franchises they profess to love.

According to some shots a few pages back, there is a time progression.

Ain't that the truth!.

But it's been that way since the year dot, so it's not going to change any time soon!

All cars premium, all cars with cockpits, so it's not all bad.

I'd love if they include the view that DriveClub has (close to the windscreen).

Yeah noticed flickery shadows on the overhang signs which wasn't the best.

Yeah there's one or two people here bending over backwards to excuse, or even celebrating PD standing still on certain things. The "I prefer my quiet car sounds" guy being one (highly paraphrasing of course). I'd like to think I'm constructive but then I just end up screaming THEY'VE HAD ALL THIS TIME WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN DOING DO THEY EVEN LOOK AT OTHER RACING GAMES!!!1

It is infuriating but.

Absolutely. The only view I use in Driveclub and Dirt Rally. Perfect mix of in car vibe and good field of view/visibility, plus get in car audio too. Hope GT implements this. I tend to use the bumper-but-not-bumper-cam in GT, gives the best feel for the car and not the overly obstructed view of the full cockpit. Hopefully hey listen. I mean it's really just picking a nice camera view for each car so set the camera Co-ordinates values. Would take someone literally about 30 seconds to implement it lol, so we'll see it in GT Sport 5 Prologue.

I guess I could be guilty of that (although it's not celebration as such, more exasperation that there are still "issues"), but it's not because I hate the game, the developers of the game or the platform it's on, it's because GT was the first driving game I fell head over heels for, and I want to see them capitalise on their position (driving games are niche, but GT sells by the shed load), rather than rest on their laurels.

Exactly. Another reason is that I prefer a sim with the game part still intact. I like credits/levels and feeling like i'm making progress. Having the two parts in one game on the platform I prefer to play on shouldn't be too much to ask.

For me, a big part of Gran Turismo is the whole car porn aspect, and given how much work PD put into replays and photo mode, I think it's safe to say that it's a big part of their whole game design philosophy. The funny thing is that the sound of these cars is a huge part of that too, which is why I find PD's extreme lack of progress in that area so bewildering.

So in terms of dynamic weather and time of day progression, how does GT Sport compare to the competition (Project Cars and Assetto Corsa)? Also in what aspects would we say that GT Sport is better than the competition?

Lighting, shaders, car models, replay angles, photomode... PD still rules the roost there. Everything else that's 'normal' for a racing sim? PD are seemingly years behind the curve with little obvious inclination or desire to catch up.

Car models? Really? I feel like we are so used to GT being untouchable on car models...but is that still true? Are their models really better that DC or Forza 6? Honest question ... because to me, they don't seem better at all (nor worse actually...).

I feel like we got to a high fidelity level in every big game... had to make a difference on car models nowadays isn't it?

That s why seeing PD neglect sounds and so many other areas is even more baffling.

Compare gt6s bac car with driveclubs...

In regards to the GTPlanet echo-chamber... don't know what people were expecting.

If you look at the GTPlanet live event, I get the sense that GTPlanet's involvement in the fundamental structure of Gran Turismo will increase. And by that I don't mean forum feedback. GT Sport seems to be structured around "events", similar to iRacing in a way. Well those events don't just "happen" *successfully. iRacing forums are pretty critical when it comes to major events and championships. I doubt PD would want to build their own website. GTPlanet is the only site that could facilitate this organization.

Then you add the live aspect of GT Sport. When there are big events, who will commentate, who will stream, who will republish and share? GT Sport will go nowhere fast without enthusiast fans play and sharing. The biggest concentration of these people is on GTPlanet.

I'm not a big frequenter of GTP - did anyone there ever actually ask for an online e-sports version of Gran Turismo, and if they did, did the suggestion gain popularity and traction?

The original GTS announcement last year had me very excited because I thought at its core it would be an authentic race weekend simulator using official performance cars and licenced tracks, with all the 'other' GT stuff (family saloons, moon buggy missions, fantasy cars, fantasy tracks) stripped out, a more focussed title that would complement GT7, not replace it. I never for one moment imagined a reimagining of iRacing on console.

I wonder what made PD/Kaz go off in this direction?

Totally agree with this. Which is why this line that PD and GTP seem to be walking on is strange. PD need to trust GTP and really give them the reigns of the GT community management, or allow them to be more independent. GTP provided the best PR for this GTS unveiling with their direct feed videos. Like you mentioned, GTS looks to heavily rely on events and live streaming to put the Sport in GT Sport, yet their first streaming event, the unveiling of the game, was a disaster imo. They seem clueless as to how these things work these days. The entire PD structure seems so dated and out of touch with not only other racing sims, but social media, live streaming and unfortunately the GT community. Who thought running multiple builds in rapid succession was a good idea? You are going to lose control of what media you want to be at the front almost immediately. Not to mention, using what seems to be the absolute worst build of the lot for your official trailer. Honestly, I am not even the least bit surprised but I am a bit disappointed that PD has not come very far since GT5 launch. For those who forgot or weren't into GT back then, PD managed to go gold, start sending out GT5 shipments, which of course quickly ended up in the hands of gamers (mostly in Europe I think) and they were already live streaming the game, hitting level caps etc, before PD even announced the god damn release date of GT5!! My god, the GAF thread back then was incredible. I couldn't put down my phone for a week. Just constantly refreshing.

The streaming tech needs improving, too. I wonder if PD plan to stream races under subscription or maybe pay-per-view for big events (which would be commercial suicide, but wouldn't surprise me), of if they're planning on funding it all through advertising.

That was ridiculous, J remember all the people saying it was an unfinished preview build and not the real thing, lol.

Only gtp hosted race of gt6 I saw was an endurance race that got ruined by the server being cut off in the final laps.. If they do collaborate with gtp hopefully they can stop that happening again.

I was hyped by thinking the same. What a shame.

Oh man... the GT5 threads in the run up to launch were the absolute best. Yeah, there was that guy in... Serbia? posting YT vids of the game in like 240p :lol

Ah, good times.

Nobody on gtplanet asked for this.

The whole reason this is happening is because the FIA, the biggest International Motorsports sanctioning body, realized that the long-term viability and attractiveness of traditional Motorsports is under threat. In addition they want to bring in a younger demographic to their fold of viewership. Kazunori is deeply embedded in the automobile industry and Gran Turismo is the largest racing game franchise out there. Hence the collaboration.

And yet we still fucking don't have Porsches.

just finished watching part 1... and none of these journalists have asked anything about the sounds.

and now we'll have to wait for part 2 which he'll upload later this week.

disgusting.

These press conference questions and answers are garbage. That car physics question was awful. Has this dude played a sim before? Ask about specific aspects!! Are the physics better? Gee, I wonder what the lead developer of GT is going to say to that question. The answer is always yes. Hell, he said GT physics could perfectly replicate any vehicle if you plugged in the parameters back in like PS2 era.

Did anybody else notice in the live event last week that the first round of [unbroadcast] races had been held on the Seattle track? ... Hopefully it's about to make a long overdue return!

Just watched the Team VVV Brands Hatch lap...

why do some games have these concrete knobs at Brands Hatch on the inside curb in turn 2 and some don't? They're not there in real life, right? Is that a "please don't exploit our unrealistically high grip on curbs to cheat your lap times"??

Is there any info to suggest this?
“We actually have a good relationship with Porsche – and as soon as the situation with their contract changes, one of these days they’ll appear in Gran Turismo,” says Yamauchi. With Gran Turismo 6 looking to introduce 12 months worth of additional cars, will it be happening within the lifespan of Polyphony’s next game? “That, I’m not sure about. I think the Porsche and EA contract, the terms are a little bit longer.”

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-29-kazunori-yamauchi-profile

Yamauchi-san has been asked about a lot a new Tourist Trophy game or any kind of appearance for motorbikes in Polyphony’s games, and that’s not outside the realm of possibility, but at the moment he can’t say, because the studio is focusing on GT SPort.

A bike and Isle of Man reveal would have saved this cluster fuck of an event. There's just no hope left.

Kaz, Yoshida and Todt have killed GT
