PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Been toying more with my ps2 lately, and now I am almost certain something is faulty here, as there is some nasty flickering on the screen, very noticeable at black colours. By using the elemination method, I can say that it is not the ac adapter, not the framemeister, not the hdmi-cables going from the framemeister to the tv, and not the ps2 itself. So, two things left. The component cables, or the d-link to component adapter. The component cables are brand new, opened a few days ago, monster component cables (recommended here and many other places). However, they are made for the ps3, but i read tons of places that they should be the same. Could that be the issue? Next, the d-link adapter is also brand new.

But yeah, two questions, have anybody else had issues by using ps3 component cables on a ps2, and are the quality of these cables generally considered good?

Do you have an ethernet cable connected to the console? mine would flicker if there was, and only through component.

Component on the PS2 (and the Mini on the whole) can get some nasty noise. Try raising your A/D Level up to 132 or so, and upping your black level by 1 and see if it persists.

If it's not that issue but something else, it seems very possible that your cable has an issue, and I've never heard of Sync issues with the PS2.

Thanks for the suggestions, i tried it, but yeah, the flckering at black continued unfortunately. Last time I saw something like this, was on my Snes, when my AC adapter was about to die, but i just tested the PS2 with another ac adapter, and that didnt help anything, so yeah.

I dont, but thanks for the suggestions!

Espgaluda does, just tried it. I can try Mushihime and DOJ later if nobody beats me to it.

I would be ecstatic if you would :D

Did modchips for PS2 slims ever get to be easier to install? A lot of wires is one thing, but tiny contact points was, as I recall, what made it a complete pain in the ass.

I would be ecstatic if you would :D

just be careful if you get a North American raiden project ps1 as the tate mode does not have any option to switch control to match the screen. (they took it out most likely to avoid being liable for busted tv re: americans turning their set sideways.) so the screen can do tate but your controller is playing like it's a side scroller (really dumb)

you can restore the options to toggle tate controls on the North America version using the playstation type gameshark.

the code is
80050BAC 0003

I have no intention of getting anything but NTSC-J, so I don't think I'll run in to issues.

Got a copy of Mushi on the way. DOJ is next, and then I might pick up some of the cheap NTSC-U games I'm missing (Zone of the Enders, DMC, etc.)

Was looking through the 480p list for PS2-games, and that list is pretty sad - and even more sad for us pal-owners. Glad I only own two of the games (God of War 1&2) that are actually 480 in ntsc and not in pal, definitely not getting more lol.

Yeah, there ain't much. I've always found it interesting how King of Fighters XI supported 480p in Japan, but not in the US release. Like... how does that even happen?

KOF XI is still an absolute must-have for the PS2, btw.

Just finished the first disc of Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

This is... this is really good. I get why people were so into it. Guess I should probably pick up the third game, too, even though it's apparently not as good as the first two.

I'm working my way through the first one and having a why haven't I played this series earlier moment also

Yeah, I picked up the first one back in 2013. I went into it hoping for the best, but not really expecting too much from it... and I ended up really, really liking it. It's a very well-made RPG, and its only sin was coming out like 2 weeks away from FFX.

Finished yakuza. Enjoyed it. Yeah the controls are a bit wonky (getting some skill levels built up helps), but really enjoyed it.

I do want to give the Shadow Hearts games a go (I have them all already), but I think i want to start with koudelka first. Might alternate back and forth between Shadow Hearts and the Yakuza games.

I debated holding off until I got Koudelka under my belt but they just feel like such different games I hoped it wouldn't matter.

I've just started Yakuza 2 now after finishing the first and the controls improve greatly. They also added some limited camera control which helps a lot. Just wishing you could invert it, but it's better than nothing. Can't believe I never played these when they were new games.

Yeah, the first Yakuza game is cool, but the second one is basically the reason people really started to care about the series. It's absolutely worth playing.

The list gets a little bigger when you start forcing 480p through GSM but it's still depressing.

I love how the Sega phantasy star collection let's you select 240p/480i/480p and even had options for intensity and scan lines! I wish every game did that.

Yeah, guess I need to look into GSM.

I think the first Yakuza-game is the best actually, but the second is great too. Was never bothered with the controls really, think they work fine for most fights really. Awesome series!

Anyone know of a homebrew program I can boot with a CDR on a PS2 to move files between a memory card and USB stick? Dunno if this exists but my searches are giving me some mixed messages.

I use Action Replay to move files from usb stick to memory card.

can I also move files from memory card to USB?

If an action replay can do it, I should definitely have a homebrew solution somewhere.

Yes you can, but make sure you get the right one that transfers saves, not the one that only does cheats.

It should look like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=act...2#tbm=isch&q=ar+max+ps2&imgrc=t4whRZhLKIEnAM: (sorry, on my phone)

Do not buy if it doesn't have the ps2 disc, it won't work without it. But you don't need the pc disc.

well I can't even get my PS2 to run a homebrew boot disc. Here the boot jingle and then it hangs at a blank screen with the playstation logo like this:
PLBnzN6.jpg

Might have to look in to an AR after all.

Are you doing this for save files? I only use it for save files(AR).

yeah. Which is why I'll probably end up going with that. I'd rather not pay for something I'm sure I could do for free, but I cannot manage to get this shit working.

Does anyone know if the EU version of the Astral Blue PS2 has any sort of rarity value? I'm seeing someone auctioning it for 50 dollars and I'm considering it.

Hi guys, I finally got my account actived at Neogaf and I wanted to write my first post in this thread! I guess I'll see you all around. PS2 is by far my favourite console. It joins the best of the retro era (unforgettable games, addictive gameplay...) and the best of the new era (cinematics, OSTs, and graphics that are still enjoyable in some way...)

I own more than 300 hundred games and 5 ps2 consoles (slims and fat...) and I just cant get enough of this black beauty. I guess my nickname here speaks the truth:P

Welcome! You own 300,000 PS2 games? How do you store all that?

Next Generation issue 53 - May 1999, covering the early March PS2 technology reveal.

Posted the full Next Generation PS2 tech reveal article last year, which you can read here (scroll down).

Putting aside some of the silly quotes hyping PS2 at the time, it's almost hard to appreciate just how much of a leap that console was from the original PlayStation in terms of both raw specs, and the games that came out a few years after launch. PS2 did eventually surpass most of the tech demos shown in March 1999, I'd say all of them except the FF VIII dance sequence which was aided by an ultra high-end workstation with tons of memory.

I finished Shadow Hearts Covenant. Wow. That game was excellent. Some of the best battle themes I've ever heard, too.

The game was surprisingly easy. I did almost all of the side stuff at the end of the game, and even though I had made my characters absurdly strong, I didn't expect to trounce the final boss quite as soundly as I did. Either way, the whole thing was a lot of fun. Thumbs up.

Tangentially, easy final bosses are so bittersweet. On one hand, I always like the idea that at the end I'm a total badass and shove the big baddie the fuck out the way, but alternatively it's kinda nice to have that last hill to climb.

My copy of Mushihimesama should be here soon. Daioujou should be following once I see a good listing.

Lol sorry guys, of course I meant 3 hundred games (or 300 games) :D.

Talking about games, I completed recently Resident Evil Dead Aim and I really enjoyed it. Of course, I can perfectly understand the criticism back in the day when the RE Saga was still a survival horror. But now that we are used to the formula Resident Evil=9999 bullets + Tons of fast zombies going after you, I'm sure most of you will like it.
This RE Dead Aim is too short (4:30 hours according to the results screen) and at a personal level I dont think that is a negative point, too much backlog lol. I prefer short and intense games rather than 30 hours of repetitive gameplay. Also, the game has very few puzzles and riddles. Still, it has some old-RE mechanics that will delight the fans; a save room (with its corresponding "save theme"), a bit of back tracking, nice atmosphere...

At first, I tried to play it with the Guncom 2, but it wasn't that precise I was wasting a lot of bullets, so in the end I finished it using dual shock 2.

The PAL version of this game is one of the most wanted, and I would say its price is around 30 € at the moment.

So, that's my recommendation, if you ever get the chance to try the game, I'm sure you will like it!

Tried out Skygunner.

This got some accolades back in the day and I can see why. Its pretty busy for a Wing Commander/Warhawk sort of 3D shooting game. There are some slow downs when there's a lot of stuff on screen, but not too awful.

I do dislike the scoring mechanism in the game and I'm reminded how much I've always disliked the PS2 analog sticks for fine control. I don't know if I'll finish the game, but I'm glad I tried it out and I'd recommend it (just not my personal preference).

Sadly for people wanting to pick this one up, it apparently has gotten more expensive (I paid $5 for it). I saw it's sitting around $30-ish. Though looking around you may find it cheaper.

Import-GAF, help! :D

Do you know if each volume of Japanese Taito Memories for the PS2 is supposed to come with 2 different booklets? This auction on eBay pretty much explains what I'm talking about.
I'm eyeing a cheap Taito Memories Joukan, in order to start collecting the whole series, but it seems to include the instruction manual only, and I can't find any reliable source about whether or not the extra book is meant to be there. Any tip?

Edit - Nevermind, guys. I've been told the extra booklet came as a preorder bonus for the box-set, but aside from that, the reason why the game was so cheap is because it's in pretty average conditions, so I won't even bother.

So I am severely lacking RPGs

I have

Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts 2
Summoner
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Persona 3 FES
Persona 4

What are some recomendations?

Preferably games with multiple endings, turn based, a lot of side content and anime cut scenes, if not anime then at thr very least visually impressive.

Dragon Quest VIII
Digital Devil Saga 1
Digital Devil Saga 2
Devil Summoner
Lucifer's Call
Shadow Hearts, Covenant and From the new world
Wild Arms 3, 4 and 5
Suikoden IV and V
Dark Chronicle (Dark cloud 2 in the States, I think)
Xenosaga 2

That would be a nice start to begin with.
