PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

IIRC the final boss of SG is real hard

Most of the challenge is in learning the controls, which don't really work like any other game, and figuring out what is even going on on-screen.

The final boss and all the optional objectives are almost impossible before you figure out all this, because of all the strict time limits that demand that you know exactly where to go and what to do at all times.

I would be ecstatic if you would :D

Some kind fellows on Shmups helped me out:

Well this list is bunk. Didn't read properly and this doesn't actually answer what I had intended lol.

Mushihimesama doesn't have the TATE (YOKO mode) option of DDP on the PSX.

Regardless, Arrange mode is still fun as hell. I'm not a huge fan of bullet hell but Cave does it so well I can't help but get in to it.

Can someone check Daioujou and see if it, at least, has the rotated-screen-but-yoko-controls option?

So I am severely lacking RPGs

I have

Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts 2
Summoner
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Persona 3 FES
Persona 4

What are some recomendations?

Preferably games with multiple endings, turn based, a lot of side content and anime cut scenes, if not anime then at thr very least visually impressive.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It has all of the above, plus a great story, likeable cast, humor and even some fan service. Buy it!

Holy crap, I just found out that the SNK Senkogu trilogy had a PS2 release (only in France apparently).

Does anyone have this? I know it has a 50/60hz selector but no idea if it supports progressive scan.

Star Ocean 3 - lots of side content and is anime in 3D basically, looking good for a PS2 game.
Valkyrie Profile 2 - Lots of side content. One of the best looking PS2 games.
Tales of the Abyss - Anime cutscenes, lots of side content
Suikoden V - Has 2 endings, challenge is to get all the 108 stars (I heavily recommend with a guide).

Why isn't there a Japanese/Asian release... :(

Most importantly, is the emulation good - as in, Neo Geo Online Collection good - or dodgy, like in that shoddy SNK Arcade compilation for the PS2?
The game is nowhere to be found on eBay, so I'm pretty sure it commands crazy prices nowadays. :/

Dragon Quest VIII
Digital Devil Saga 1
Digital Devil Saga 2
Devil Summoner
Lucifer's Call
Shadow Hearts, Covenant and From the new world
Wild Arms 3, 4 and 5
Suikoden IV and V
Dark Chronicle (Dark cloud 2 in the States, I think)
Xenosaga 2

That would be a nice start to begin with.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It has all of the above, plus a great story, likeable cast, humor and even some fan service. Buy it!

Thanks for the suggestion guys!

Initially I was interested in Digital Devil Saga but I looked at the game play and unfortunately the aesthetic is just too unappealing to me.

Similarly, Devil Summoner is too um historical for my taste currently. Also it is an ARPG I think

Nocturne (Lucifers Call) I have recently been watching a lets play of this to see if id be Interested in buying it but the story seems very sparse. It is mostly just intro, and dungeons. I dunno. I watched 17 parts that were an average of 30 mins each. I really do like the character models though.

All of the sequel games mentioned, do you have to play the first games to understand the story? I have played some star ocean and tales games before but to be honest I forget like, all of them.

Is Shadow Hearts: Covenant the first game? I have read luck plays a big part, isthe game fair?

I had Suikoden on Ps1 but the cat broke it and it still is too upsetting to move on to any of the others...

Is Tales of the abyss also on PSP, if so would that be cheaper and what are the differences?

Think I am most interested in

Valkarie Profile 2
Tales of the Abyss
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Tales of the Abyss
WILD ARMS 3

These last 2 games are 2D with some hand drawn art, aren't they?

Tales of the Abyss is on 3DS...I'm not sure about the differences off the top of my head (other than there are differences)

Wild ARMS 3 doesn't require previous knowledge of the games.

The first Shadow Hearts game is just Shadow Hearts. The PS1 game Koudelka is a loose predecessor to the Shadow Hearts games.

I don't recall about Valkyrie Profile 2, but I don't believe any of these games are 2D.

It's on ebay...for the PC version.

I know you might not count it as turn based, but FFXII is one of the best RPGs ever imo

Anybody recommend a decent 3rd party component cable for the ps2? I tried getting hold of the official ps3 cable but it fell through and any other listings are crazy expensive. My current el cheapo cable has a lot of ringing.

So um, I have a question about uploading and editing PS2 game footage, but before I do that, I'm wondering if there is any central video editing thread that would be a better fit?

I got one of those cheap no-name chinese cables you always see on ebay and it works perfectly for me. Seems those are hugely YMMV though.

I use my PS3 cable. Works fine and shouldn't be expensive...

I was going to buy this. A local retro game store had 3 copies of the CE, steelbook, used, complete for about 5$ each. I didnt have any money on me at the time, I just decided I'd stop by and see what they had. When I returned the next day all the copies were gone. :(

Similarly, I just missed out on a great deal on Ebay. Approx 15$ Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Legendia, toegether. But I was too slow. ;/

Only have 20$ to spend on a PS2 game for now, so getting them both for that price would have been amazing.

Anyway, everyone. Thanks again for your suggestions. As you can probably tell, I've decided to get Tales of the Abyss.

Btw, for future reference, what are some games with day/night cycles besides GTA and harvest moon?

Guys....I have several brand new PS2 s SCPH 30001R and 30001 made in Japan.

I also have a brand new Japanese Blue transparent and somehow a brand new Automobile Red which although is brand new but I box was beat up so I opened it....for the heck. It has a very nice cover or perhaps the ps2 protector and I do not want to touch the unit as it has piano finish like the 60 gig PS3.

Can I make some $$$$ of these. THE Red has a stand attached to the box. Like it is tapped to the box.

if you're looking for thousands, probably not.

They're definitely worth at least a couple hundred bucks each, though. Might ask around on Assembler, as I find such things are difficult to check on eBay.

It depends on the demand, I'd say. If you put them on eBay and there's a hardcore PS2 collector he will probably pay whatever you want. But I would say that €150 would be a fair price for a special edition and brand-new PS2. I'm talking about what I've seen in Europe/Spain, maybe in the States you can get more money (or less).

Got myself a black PS2 on a flea market. Original box, with manuals, 2 singstar microphones, and a logitec controller for 50 euros. The PS2 is in almost perfect condition :)

Definitely do not skip Shadow Hearts 1, it's a fantastic game with unmatched atmosphere. I like it even more than Covenant, but you should play both regardless. 3 is the one you skip.

Also, +1 to FFXII and DQVIII.

OK, so I know the Mega Man Anniversary Collection is kind of shit but I've heard the MMX collection is pretty OK? Can anyone confirm? Wouldn't mind having a copy of that for cheap access to all the X games now that I have a PS2 hooked up to a decent CRT monitor.

Filtering is really the biggest issue with the collections, regardless. 480i can be dealt with a few different ways. filtering is impossible.

Sounds like MMX is good, though.

I almost got the X Collection myself a few times - does 240p mean it'll have trouble with component cables? I remember in Tekken 5, the arcade emulations of 1 and 2 flatout wouldn't display when using component cables/progressive scan.

I didn't have any problems with the Anniversary Collection but I remember hearing something like that for the X Collection.

TVs are very picky about 240p via component. It's very possible your TV doesn't like it.

That would explain it then. Interesting. I'll keep it in mind.

if you google the model and "240p" you might be able to find a bit of discussion. Some of the folks in the Upscalers/RGB/CRT thread are encyclopedias of what brands tend to be good about these things but I can't ever keep it straight.

Since you've already had issues though, might just be worth doing when you're looking for a new TV or something.
