No Man's Sky - August 9, 2016

The delay is disappointing, but not a big deal. I've waited patiently through delays much longer and the world still hasn't ended. The only thing I don't want them to do is take up stage time at E3 on Sony's stage again. I think we've seen enough until the pre release marketing push.

Still look forward to the game in August.

You're being compared to an 8 year old who doesn't pay attention, given your post about 'I still don't understand what you do in NMS'.

There is information about nearly every single aspect of this game available on IGN, the biggest gaming site WW, so it isn't like you have to more than C&P your post into Google to get an answer.

Pretty impressive to try and win the "Worst Fanbase Award" for a product that isn't even on the market yet. Kudos.

I'll never agree with this. The NMS community has been one of the best I've ever been involved with. The fuckery is not indicative of the community as a whole.

You're so far off. Some shitheads making death threats doesn't pollute the whole pool. I've met some really amazing people through the fan art community surrounding this game and my own efforts in that regard has had life-changing implications for me personally. In fact, the experience of seeing the reveal and the years of discussion, collaboration and excitement that followed is unlike anything I've seen or been a part of.

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...

Well sure, when people are kept happy they're awesome, it's when the bad stuff happens that you see the true character, and with the subredit at least, that was shown to be pretty bad. And I don't just mean the threats, go check out what was up voted.

They've always been pretty over defensive in my experience.

I mean, I'm sure people see me as over-defensive, but that's when it comes to all the "what do you doo-esque" comments. It's hard to have a discussion about an actual concern or criticism on the game mechanics or something without people on the reddit and facebook page jumping at you. Often I see the "they're giving us 18 quintillion planets response and you're worried about this!!?" comment, which is a really dumb thing to say.

The Explorenms website is pretty chill though.

Honestly I made one last post there after news broke of the delay and unsubscribed. I started out there when there were fewer than 1000 subs, but as it grew it got more and more toxic. I've found that twitter and youtube have better fan community for the game than the subreddit. I absolutely agree with you that there are serious morons interested in this game, but the fact remains that generally speaking it's a pretty upbeat, optimistic and excited bunch.

It is strange that a game that isn't even released has garnered something like this. But it's not shocking that the devs got death threats. Even Kojima got death threats when he wanted to back away from the MGS series.

In terms of development, how much can actually be accomplished in a few weeks?

We're talking a month and a half delay here. This short of a delay usually means that, while nothing horrible has happened, they either need more time to squash last minute bugs or they are just trying to clean up the code. If it was something game-breaking, we'd either see a year delay or a TBD.

Its kind of funny how this game has the worst community and it's not even out yet.

While it's unfair to generalize, this is certainly an awful side of the community to see and can easily be viewed as an unfortunate reflection of the game's community at large.

It's not a good look.

I guess that's not fair on my part, to judge based on this one instance. A bit rude.

Is it just a "whoa, some gamers are crazy" kind of thing, and just leave it at that? I just don't think I've seen this kind of (focused on the messenger) reaction to a game delay... ever.

All it shows is the massive interest in the game. Throw enough internet people into one room and a segment of seriously faulty people can make the whole thing look toxic.

Consider that to many in the mainstream, gamergate = gamers. It is unfortunate how skewed things can appear from the outside looking in.

The only thing that separates GAF from the ugliness out there is good moderation. And even within these confines, GAF can display a subtle toxicity of its own.

[edit] I see you've already replied to replies. Not wanting to beat a dead horse :)

No worries dude. You can't be faulted for seeing what went down and thinking 'what the fuck is the deal with this game and it's fans.' Just know that there are some really awesome people doing some very creative things in support of this game, and generally speaking it's a very positive and excited bunch of fans. Cheers

I don't mean this in an insulting way, but it would seem to me that a number of ppl on that subreddit suffer from some mental illnesses. It's honestly very sad to see. :( It hurts me deeply to read that NMS is all a particular person has to live for and such. :/ Idk how you all feel about them. I honestly feel sad and worried for them :(

New IP from a dev, who's previous work was a cartoony stunt ride, about space adventuring and it is still making those who you would expect to get violent (when guns they kill virtual people with get nerfed) unleash their bloodlust.

I still have no idea what the gameplay actually is.

That is your fault, because they have shown plenty of what the game will be.

New IP from a dev, who's previous work was a cartoony stunt ride, about space adventuring and it is still making those who you would expect to get violent (when guns they kill virtual people with get nerfed) unleash their bloodlust.

Gamers (the people who consider the fact they play videogames a central part of their identity, not people who play a game for fun) are the absolute worst.

The no mans sky community is already toxic as hell and the game didn't even come out yet . Sad and pathetic

I kinda want them to just cancel the game and tell those fuckers to suck a lemon. It's just crazy that this game is making people so angry.

I can't remember the last time I saw such a response to a game. Maybe it's because I'm actually paying attention this time?

Hey man, Joe Danger was a lot ore than a cartoony stunt racer.

Hope Sean takes all of this clusterfuck OK and doesn't effect his life.

It's so embarassing sending death threads about a fucking videogame. Worst part is that the toxic guys tend to be the ones screaming that videogames should be taken more seriously.

Fucking grow up you idiots.

I don't even understand why this game of all things managed to gather such a toxic fanbase. I would have thought most of NMS fans would be super nice and kind people, and I'm not being sarcastic here. So weird.

It's really strange. I've been trying to think of another game that's had part of the fanbase be as shitty as this one and I can't think of a single one.

Maybe CoD? But I'm not sure that fanbase sends death threats to the developers.

I kinda wanna say there was something going on when they changed a weapon model or something, but it's been a while.

Just had this pop up on my timeline on Twitter.

@NoMansSky "I have received loads of death threats this week, but don't worry, Hello Games now looks like the house from Home Alone #pillowfort"

Some people are absolutely ridiculous, couple this with the threats that Jason got also.

You don't seem to understand what toxic means.
Ok please explain to me how accusing an entire fan base of being capable of making death threats isn't creating toxicity.

Either way I think I'm done here, you guys just don't get it. Don't you understand you're saying to people "hey you like No Man's Sky, well a bunch of you people just made death threats, I can't believe you're like that. You should feel ashamed."

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Are we to assume because some Man U fans go to matches and fight that all Man U fans are toxic? The generalisation is toxic.

I don't see that level of generalization. I see an acknowledgement of undesirable and hateful people inside a community of people surrounding a game that hasn't come out yet. Your defensiveness is unnecessary. Of course not every fan is sending death threats. The fact that any are means there is a problem in the community.
