[SPOILER THREAD] X-Men: Apocalypse

Magneto and Apocalypse destroying Auschwitz will stick with me the rest of my days. Utter ridiculousness...

The above post is right. Bryan Singer cannot do mutant action that isn't Wolverine twirling around. The entire 3rd act compared to probably every superhero movie releasing this year stands out as so outdated and boring. Singer is a fossil.

Anyways, on Apocalypse, certainly his arrogance superseded him and that sort of bleeds into him being such an inactive villain that cared less about plotting and more about doing whatever pops in his brain at the moment, rather it be seeing Magneto on tv then coming up with him destroying the planet or finding out about Xavier then wanting to control everyone's minds. Those 2 plans don't make any sense together by the way. What we needed was a baseline motivation and description for what he wanted to do. Extending the Egypt opening by giving him some dialogue could have helped, I wonder what he was doing in Egypt that was so bad that they wanted him dead.

It was probably my mind playing tricks on me, but I swear every shot of Jubilee ended with her opening her mouth to say something and then it cutting away lol

Probably would've added another 3 words to what, her 15 in the whole movie? Maybe even 10.

Why not? He wants to cleanse the Earth of a society he considers corrupt, and he wants Xavier's mind-control powers so that from that point onward he will be immune from betrayal.

eh i rarely agree with you it's looking like. i thought the man in the wall part was creepy as fuck. probably the only time i found his power really intimidating.

he's goofy but i wasn't so caught up on the height thing being the reason for it. personally i find the trinity of darkseid/thanos/apocalypse all corny looking. they can be 8 feet tall and it still looks silly, possibly moreso. i'm not happy about avengers and justice league leading up to these dorks but i guess it was bound to happen.

edit: anyways I really love the first half of this movie but it lost me after he gathered the horsemen. soundtrack is incredible though. ottman is so good at this.

Unfortunately most of Marvel's big Cosmic Villains are tied to Fox with Fantastic Four. So they are shit outta luck in that department.

I guess you never read Infinity Gauntlet if you think Thanos is a lame villain.

I actually liked it quite a bit.

The biggest criticism I have is there were way, way, way too many subplots and Apoc was kind of a dumb, boring villain. Other than that, the "core" movie was a dumb X-Men fun. I went in with very low expectations, so that could have lead to the enjoyment level. I was never expecting a great film with anything too amazing, I was expecting a X-Men movie with some cool X-Men shit. They have that. Every film in the franchise feels like a dumb X-Men movie peppered with some interesting themes and shit here and there, and that's what I got out of Apoc. It was a mess sometimes, but it was a consistently X-Men-y mess.

I dunno, it's weird because I enjoy this franchise much more than the Marvel series proper, maybe because it seems to be OK with being silly af sometimes. I mean, it is a comic book movie, after all.

I will say there was a *lot* of fan service. It seems like they made this film for fans of the older movies. Which worked wonders for me, but I'm sure left some other people cold. I guess this series is my Transformers or something. Whatever. I get one.

Anyway, probably the weakest of the "new trilogy" or whatever, but definitely hell of a lot better than X3 and Origins: Wolverine. I kind of wish they just cut down on some characters in this one, to be honest. The movie's biggest sin was that it dragged quite a bit so everyone could "fit" into the universe. And it was clear watching it (the entire Stryker sequence was for the Wolvie cameo, duh...but it was fun for me lol, even though it was out of place). Oh, yeah the the horsemen subplots were unnecessary and bad. I would've cut those backstories and just gave him some cardboard mutant villains (which they ended up being, anyway, except for Magneto).

Im not sure if I was supposed to care about these characters because Singer clearly didnt. The cast was bloated and the spectacle was incredibly boring which is the worst thing to happen to a summer blockbuster. Nobody really did anything interesting with their powers in the fights. It really felt like filler, stuff that you had to have happen but coukdnt be bothered to make dynamic. Nightcrawler was the stand out character but thats not saying much. Apocalypse was a broad character who was only slightly more interesting than his horsemen so the conflict was very generic (save the world).

Why did Striker have Wolverine when Mystique captured him at the end of DoFP? Is Singer just ignoring his own continuity?

I did not hate the movie as much as I thought I would but it is still overall meh. I liked all of the school parts of the mansion (minus the odd placement of that class in which the students are just sort of making due of the room they are in with one student sitting on the stairs). Apocalypse was poorly done, bad writing, bad design and just uninteresting. His Four Horsemen outside of Magneto (who should not have been in the movie for what they ended up doing with him) were not given much to do.

The X-Men franchise is the absolute king of wasting characters by not giving any substance outside of the main cast. Characters are killed off in a brief mention (Magneto airplane scene in DoFP), others are given just a handful of lines (Storm, Psylocke, Angel, Jubilee, etc.). Fox has access to so many mutants and they choose to do nothing with most of them.

Mystique being some sort of symbol for mutants felt like it came out of the Hunger Games. I don't even remember the hand wave excuse they gave for having her not in mutant form for most of the movie and there were a few scenes it seemed like her blue form make up was worse than in past films. She doesn't even get much to do in the final fight.

Magneto getting to slide again is the only thing that truly bothers me about this movie. Yeah, there is a brief mention at the end (during the newscast exposition) that he assisted with defeating Apocalypse...but Magneto was responsible for so much of the destruction to begin with. Apocalypse enhanced his powers but Magneto chose to lash out again after his family died. He still endangered the lives of millions, if not billions of people and then he gets to stroll off in his blazer like it's all good. My biggest issue across this franchise is their need to involve Magneto in everything. He is absolutely a huge part of the X-Men franchise, nobody is questioning that. But him filling in the role of an antagonist almost every time is tiresome. This redemption arc of his just cycles around and around.

Best superhero flick of the year.

So mystique knew nightcrawler was her son at the beginning, why else did she save him? Then it cuts to Magneto.

Also nightcrawler teleporting behing arch Angel, throwing him at the electric fence, teleporting up and dragging him down was some MvC stuff.

I think Mystique was just going around saving mutants in captivity. That or she heard about Nightcrawler from Caliban and wanted to take him to the school because of his powers.

Yeah Yeah apparently he's really great because he loves the embodiment of death or some shit. Still doesn't seem like a villain that will be fun to watch. Especially coming off of civil war which had mcu's best end game by far.

Well, the best third acts in MCU movies have both been done by the Russos, coincidentally enough. While I think it's understood that Thanos does need to be some world-ending god as much as we all love contained and personal fights, the Russos also are very conscious of the fact that MCU movies have tired the bombastic and apocalyptic third act without much emotional stakes.

Count on Thanos to be a good villain. Pierce and Zemo were terrific.

lol at Psylocke's exit from the film. No one gave a shit.
It's like that one person getting huffy at a party.

"THAT'S IT! I'M LEAVING!"

"okay."

"I MEAN IT! I WILL! I'M JUST SO PISSED!"

"..."

"FINE I'M GONE! I DON'T EVEN CARE!" *leaves*

"...who was that?"

No he's great because he's a villain who doesn't just have super strength, but also intelligence to outsmart his opponents.

Seriously if you don't want to read Infinity Gauntlet then at least familiarize yourself with Thanos Quest on YouTube or read it with Marvel Unlimited. It's only 2 issues.

Although I agree they will probably make the MCU version another MCU meaningless villain.

Although the Russo Bros. have had the best villains so far. There's a chance that Thanos can be interesting I guess.

Just caught it a few hours ago. It's just a plodding, boring movie. I don't know if it was the writing or the editing, but it just never picked up. The definitely chose to do too much. Wrap up a trilogy. Introduce the new blood.

Hoping they get someone else in to direct the next one. They need a fresh vision, something that Vaughn really brought to rejuvenate the franchise.

The four horsemen were a joke. Apparently all the powers that Apocalypse imbues them with went to Magneto.

On the upside, I was really surprised how accurate Logan's Weapon X get-up was. Out of all the designs in the comic, they chose that stupid one to replicate.

I actually liked this movie, but my god, the violence, decapitations and shit.

Yeah it struck me how violent this one was. Angel's transformation, the decapitations, a little girl and her mother getting impaled with an arrow, Xavier getting his shit pushed in at the mind battle, Apoc's death, they really pushed that PG-13 hard.

Don't forget Magneto's "Who the fuck are you?!"

You are allowed one or two fucks in PG-13. And a shit.

lol at Psylocke's exit from the film. No one gave a shit.

For real. They're were like

"Are you still here? I thought Apocalypse choked you out."

"Actually, that was Mystique. I jumped out of the pla-"

"Okay! Well take it easy."

All of the Horseman were handled poorly, and I would say Magneto least of all. But we know his deal from the past movies. Angel and Psylocke were cannon fodder. Storm got done dirty, I was disappointed we didn't get more of her. Shipp was doing a really good job, like the scenes when she first met Apocalypse. But after that they shut her down until the very end of the 3rd Act. Speaking of the newcomers, I liked all of the new X-Men. Cyclops, Jean, Nightcrawler, and Storm. I'd love to see that mall scene that was cut out.

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Mystique here, I do like what they've done to explain why she is a hero now. I'm probably in the minority there, but I can buy that the changes to the timeline would have had a significant impact on what she becomes. In this timeline she is being held up as this mutant hero, admired by millions of mutants around the world. So her being in that leader position for this film never bothered me.

Wolverine's costume was not comic accurate. First of all there is no visor, second the thing only covered around his temples.

It's Singer's half ass attempt.

i saw it a couple of hours ago and my friends and i talked about mostve the stuff thats been mentioned on this page alone... too many subplots, psylock just leaving, apoc just being ok

rose tinted glasses and all that but they shouldve gone with a better voice

it was ok... disappointing after dofp

what was the ending scene about?

I just finished watching this.

Jesus fucking christ this is bad.

Singer needs to call it quits permanently with this IP. He doesn't give a shit about these characters. He somehow gets worse at juggling an ensemble cast with each film. He gets the characters completely wrong. I could go on.

It doesn't shock me that people confirmed he wouldn't allow any of the actors to bring/read comics on set for at least 2 of the X-Men films he helmed. It's like they take imagery from the covers but don't give a shit what's on the pages.

This is Last Stand 2.0. This is big dumb schlock on the level of BvS.

Count me in the same boat as the folks who say this was better than Civil War.
I'm not in, Civil War is one of the best MCU movies ever.

Nah, this is quite better than Batman v Superman.

Someone remind me again why she's evil in this movie?

They threw things out there, neither of which I really bought. One was her being jealous of Mystique. But I feel like that would have paid off with a huge fight between them if that was an angle they were really going for. Another was that she was seduced by the power upgrade that Apocalypse gave her, same as Angel who was "fixed" and improved by becoming a Horseman.

I think they wanted to leave the character at a point where she wasn't irredeemable for future films. She didn't do anything that bad. Psylocke went after Beast and the others, but so did Storm and she was brought into the fold.

I swear this movie has the least action of any super-hero movie I've ever scene. And when I say action scenes I don't mean huge "I'm gonna use my powers now!!" moments. Those are nice to look at but they don't get the adrenaline going. I'm talking like, physical brawls and back-and-forth fights and stuff. The first one is Wolverine. The next is Beast vs. Psylocke (very brief) and Nightcrawler vs. Angel (hardly a fight). THAT'S IT.

Man who said anything about fisticuffs. You have all these characters with unique powers. You gotta find a way to use them in the context of an action scene that has them sometimes on the attack and sometimes on the defensive. 3 people standing still shooting beams isn't an action scene it's a Care Bear Stare

Nope.
  • Humans vs Ancient Horsemen
  • Angel vs Nightcrawler cage fight
  • Wolverine vs Weapon X goons at Alkali Lake
  • Beast vs Psylocke in Cairo
  • Storm vs Cyclops in Cairo
  • Nightcrawler vs Angel in Cairo
  • Xavier vs Apocalypse in Xavier's mind
  • Everybody vs Apocalypse in Cairo

We could argue if any of the fights are actually good or entertaining, and I would say Wolverine vs goons and maybe the second Angel vs Nightcrawler fight, but overall there were plenty of fights.

Problem was that almost all of it came right at the end all mashed together.

Same as storm?

Storm didn't come off as evil. Hell she had human friends, why would she would join Apocalypse to destroy them.

Storm and Psylocke didn't seem evil or bad. Angel and Magneto were. Angel, of humans locking him in a cage made to fight other mutants and the loss of his wings. Magneto we know why.
