AP: Clinton clinches Democratic Nomination

but I'd love for Bernie to win all the states tonight and narrow the gap in terms of the 2026 pledged delegates, only to expose how incredibly corrupt the whole process is

So, it's "justice" if Bernie wins the same way the Hillary is winning right now?

The issue is what effect that has on voters and future turnout. It's really shitty to call a bunch of superdelegates the previous night and declare a winner the day before a lot of primaries. I'd bet a lot of people would hear that "news" in the morning and decide not to go vote.

Edit: or how most news sites were reporting Hilary's 600+ delegate lead before a single primary vote was cast.

On the other hand it's an abridgement of first amendment rights to keep SDs from voicing their opinion pre-election.

Also, it technically hurts Hillary more to be the assumed nom since her voters will stay home.

It can also affect Clinton supporters not voting if they think she's clinched already, your logic doesn't just go one way. Blaming the news organizations for reporting the news is silly. If you're unaware of what the AP is I would encourage you to learn about it before declaring it some biased monolithic organization.

The AP reported the news when they got the fucking numbers they needed to report the news.

Of all the news organizations to attack... Jesus Christ...
It's really no different than if they just announced it in October. Oh well, I contacted all the super delegates and guess what... No need for the democratic race anymore!

It's incredibly irresponsible to announce something like the night before a number of major primaries.

It doesn't really matter since it's going to happen anyway.

Ignoring everything else, it does seem a bit questionable that the AP broke that they themselves have made this determination. You're supposed to be reporting the news. It's about ethics in journalism yo.

Is it ethical for a journalist to suppress the truth just to protect the fragile feelings of Bernie supporters?

That isn't how superdelegates work.

The first mistake you made was assuming any particular journalism outfit has ever been 100% unbiased in any form, but what they reported on in this case was a fact that anyone else could individiually confirm.

that's not how it works

Yeah, but what if all states had either caucuses or open primaries and Bernie had won all the coin tosses...

The "coin tosses" I'm assuming you're referring to had zero actual impact on this race. They were for regional delegates to the next level of the Iowa caucuses. To give you an idea of the numbers, there were 1,681 districts that held caucuses, who would send something like 5-10 delegates up to the next level. So you're talking about 6 coin flip results out of 10,000 delegates or so. The result on the national delegate level wasn't even a single delegate.

On the other stuff, 538 did some analysis. If every state ran an open primary, Hillary is still winning but Bernie closes the gap a little from 12% to 9% or something like that. Bernie would lead if every state ran an open caucus, although I'm not sure that's something you really want to hang your hat on since caucuses suppress voter turnout in significant ways.

If someone wants more caucuses they're really just admitting they don't actually care about the process, they just want Bernie to win.

Which is fine and all but don't start whining then about the process being corrupt or undemocratic.

I would like to think you will eventually change your mind because this election is not about any one candidate. It's about redefining the political landscape.

I dream of a day when Citizens United is repealed.
I dream of a day when the Voting Rights Act is fully restored.
I dream of a day when Fair districting rules are brought in force.
I dream of a day when Corporate Personhood is revisited.

Except, these aren't dreams. These are the very real possibility of the next 4-8yrs. This election is the opportunity to not just make a 5-4 Supreme Court. It's an opportunity to create a 6-3 young, liberal majority that will have a lasting, immeasurable impact on generations of Americans. A majority that will carry the banner for progressive principles for decades and ensure policies espoused by Sanders can actually see the light of day.

Voting for the Democratic nominee, is not a betrayal of the future Sanders talked about. It's about buying a share in a ensuring that future, because as before, it is not about any one person, it's about laying the foundation for the change you want and there is no greater foundation than a 6-3 SCOTUS.
This is a great post.
