Remedy now expanded into two teams; two new games in development; has new partner

Both games are AAA, huh? That's a little unexpected but awesome. I thought for sure they'd do what Ready At Dawn is doing and work on a smaller project as a stop-gap before another major game. They're diving in head-first!

Why does it take Remedy so long to develop a game? Six years between major releases and the best they could do was a 10 hour game with no multiplayer.

I think next they need to develop a much smaller digital game which could be completed and shipped in 18-24 months. I reckon that would be refreshing for all the members of staff after the protracted development, story-heavy games Alan Wake and Quantum Break. Maybe they should go with Gamestop, as that's the kind of thing they're funding right now.

Wtf man. If anything I was expecting them to partner with MS again for more games. I thought QB sold well? Odd and again, disappointing. Come on MS, you canned Fable Legends and closed Lionhead and Press Play, and while that could be for any reason, don't start doing this stuff. But then again we don't know what happened. Maybe MS wanted something and Remedy didn't and decided to go this way. I do wonder who that new partner is and why they don't let us know.

Had to build a new engine plus had to deal with Microsoft forcing there stupid tv shit down there throats . Plus multiplayer doesn't really fit quantum breaks theme , I'm glad it didn't have multiplayer (though some kind of arena mode would have been awesome ).

FTFM

I agree, QB was/is great. I still need to 100% it after 30+ hours across X1 and PC.

I'm curious about what they're doing next. Hopefully turn around is quicker.

I don't think they should have shoehorned in multiplayer, that would have been a mistake. I'm just pointing out that for not putting out a major release in six years what they did release was not a very meaty product.

Some developers churn out high quality products at a a much faster pace. Look at From Software, they have twice as many employees but are able to put out critically acclaimed titles every year. Rocksteady has a similar number of employees as Remedy and was able to put out an entire trilogy in the time between Alan Wake and Quantum Break.

Remedy and the type of triple AAA single player games they make seems like the kind of studio that needs a console publisher to fund their games. Unless they've found a third party publisher who's willing to take those risks and allocate a huge budget; I don't see them being able to create the type of games with the same scale, scope, and high production values they're used to doing.

But damn, MS own first party studio list is already quite small and becomes even smaller now. Well technically Remedy wasn't first party.

"but at the same time we’re exploring opportunities in other mediums to tell more Alan Wake stories."

I'll take it! Another web series?

Alan Wake sucks my balls.

It was My First Silent Hill with gimmicky shooter mechanics and a wet fart ending.

Bring on the true Max Payne 3 and it's day fucking one, Remedy.

You know Id actually love to see Remedy take a indie stance on gaming. Like do something like Max Payne but not fucking AAA levels of budget. I feel like they could make great fun games but they are chasing this big release spectrum and I am just not feeling it. I was a huge remedy fan but Quantum Break just sounded dumb to me.

Would not surprise me if Sony picked them up and added them to their list of studios. E3 being the perfect place to announce that as well. Either way it's a shame.

We had one of the few developers that managed to show what the console was capable of graphically and it's just a really good game. A good exclusive for MS.

Why are you so sure they aren't still working with Microsoft? They're going to have two projects going.

They aren't beholden to ms.

Focus of resources, bigger scope for game, additional development help, better post release support with potential for DLC.

There's lots of resolve to argue for exclusivity. Might not be acceptable for one console owners but you can't expect every single game on your platform or choice just because.

They're not a small studio. We have plenty of examples of 3rd party publishers supporting their developers pretty well. The same stuff could be accomplished by joining EA or Acti or Ubi or 2K or Bethesda or DeepSilver with the additional benefit of targeting a much larger base.

I'm not a one console user and even then I would rather have them multiplat just for principle's sake. But I digress.

Again, we have nothing to suggest that they've stopped working with MS.

We don't? So basically they could partner with multiple companies? I have to admit that I don't know a whole lot about these things.

It would be kind of surprising if MS did drop them, because I recall MS saying they were happy with the QB sales?

Plus if that were the case, wouldn't MS just announce it like they did about Lionhead and Press Play?

If this means that this very talented studio can get more games out, it's nothing but good news for them and the gamers.

It sure seems like it. They probably are not allowed to go into detail about it yet, because they only say there's a new partner but they don't say who it is.

They say they're splitting into two teams to be able to develop more projects and release games more quickly, and mention they're working with "a new partner". That suggests to me that one of the teams is working with this new mystery partner on something, and the other is maybe sticking with MS.

But at the moment it's speculation. We don't know how well QB sold, or whether they're still going to be getting funding from MS, or perhaps as importantly who this new partner is.

Plus if that were the case, wouldn't MS just announce it like they did about Lionhead and Press Play?

There would be nothing to announce though. Lionhead and Press Play were MS internal studios - one was closed down and the other bought back its independence. Remedy are a developer who has been doing contract work with MS, and their next contract is probably always contingent on how the current one does. If MS decides not to create a new contract there's nothing to 'announce'; it just means the two companies won't be working together any more, like what happens all the time in business.

They're an independent developer, Microsoft just happened to be the publisher of their last two games.

Kind of like Insomniac having Sony, Microsoft, EA, GameStop and Occulus as publishing partners.

Nothing says MS "dropped" them, but the game they are making is something that MS maybe not have wanted to publish, hence they have a new partner.

It depends on contracts but usually independent companies will work with multiple publishers. Insomniac was working on Occulus Rift exclusive titles while also developing the new Ratchet and Clank for Sony.

It didn't. QB bombed.

That guy replying is an idiot, he's saying he wishes for them to be closed and will laugh when they do all because they "ignored" Playstation fans.

he isn't saying he wishing for them to close at all. he's simply stating the inevitability of it happening if you don't get the sales you need to continue. you either spread out to multiple platforms, or you stop making games people aren't very interested in so they get a successful franchise under their belt on a single platform. they have to do one or the other.

Ah right, my bad. I thought they had announced the QB sales a while ago?

That's true, had not thought of it like that, but that's exactly how it is. We'll just have to wait and see if more comes from this. MS did fund Remedy games on 360 and X1 though, right?

Maybe you should go read the rest of his replies.

Glad they are still getting funded. We don't know if Microsoft ever had first refusal on new games and maybe after Alan Wake, Quantum Break, Microsoft aren't keen on Remedy or just the new game isn't for them.

Please don't pretend that tweet had any sort of intent behind it other than being a complete dick.

haha you definitely read his reply in a positive way.

I'd be interested in reading your positive spin on this quote from the same person

It would surprise me and not in a good way. I'd rather have them buy Quantic Dream. Remedy has to be the most overrated developer on this site.

Really? What a shame. It's always fucked up when a rather good game just doesn't sell all that well. All those years, undoubtedly crazy working hours and it just doesn't become a success for them. Game was far from perfect but still a damn fun one with great visuals but sadly too short.

Didn't some members of the Remedy team visit Naughty Dog just recently? I will not be surprised if Sony is the new partner.

Yea, it's extremely sad. And unfortunately, without a Steam version, they weren't able to make up for lackluster console sales via a PC version (like AW).

Their reputation with the PC community - something they always prided themselves on - is in tatters because Microsoft unexpectedly wanted a simultaneous launch on both platforms. I wouldn't be surprised if their relationship's changed in recent months. Their PR being so bad wasn't MS's fault, though.

Yeah, I can totally see how the implied impact on reputation in PC community relates to these ~100 million USD deals with publishers like MS /sarcasm

I wouldn't be surprised that their relationship changed because QB hasn't performed how MS was expecting it to perform but I'm pretty certain that the issues around PC version of that game wasn't even mentioned during this.

It's more likely that Remedy is just looking to increase its sales while avoiding going 1st party.

Could be for anything really. But if that's the case I reckon E3 will be the place for it. But I hope not, let them become a multiplatform dev then.

Interesting about the new partners.
Hope the games releases in few years.

Nah PlatinumGames is... Remedy do some good games at least.

You crazy. Their list of action games is some of the best ever. QB game play is the best so far in the 3rd person shooter genre this gen. Nothing else is can match what it does.

Remedy, why do you have to tease us with two new games and then say none are Alan Wake 2?

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
