If you don't know the difference between something like a hot springs DLC that very obviously only exists to show more skin, and something like the source of my avatar, which is a retro-styled family beach scene that is in no way sexual, then context means nothing to you and I don't know how to have a conversation without context.

You think that picture is in no way sexual despite 3 of the male characters are displaying their powers and she is just showing cleavage? I mean she is the focal point of the image.

When they make these changes, I'm glad it gets the reaction it does, because it draws attention to the pervy/pedo aspects of these games that make me realize I want nothing to do with them whether they try to adjust age numbers or cover up some cleavage or not.

I wish Nintendo would stop producing this kind of crap in the first place, rather than trying to change things in the localization later. I grew up on JRPGs in the 16 and 32-but days (I was around for 8-bit, but didn't like the genre at that time), and I keep wanting to get back into them, but they're rotten with fan service and/or sexualized children anymore.

This is a game about the music industry. The character's look is perfectly in-keeping with the role of female pop idol, and is really not much different to how say, someone like Britney Spears appeared in her music videos. If it was another MGS V Quiet situation, I could understand the complaints about clothes more.

Hope to see you in the OT after you buy the game then.
Not specifically for you, but too many times I see some people dropping in those threads to say they love those changes and then never buy the game afterwards...

Not posting in a game's OT does not necessarily mean someone didn't buy the game. What kind of shit is this?

Lmao as someone who was fine with pretty much every change in FE:fates man that white dress edit is just so bad looking. Genuinly surprised Nintendo is doing so much for a game that probably won't sell super well. With fire emblem I understand wanting it to have super broad appeal but this game is as niche as niche gets and feel they should have just gone for an M rated anime fanservice game and not tried to tone it down

I have the game preordered and paid off, but tbh I dunno if I wanna use the OT or not, I do this with plenty of games.

I don't like fan service. I don't like the inclusion of costumes and scenarios that exist primarily to titilate, especially in cases where the characters are very young.

The amount of skin being shown is not always important. You can sexualize a character in exploitative ways while having every bit of skin covered, and you can have characters appear in swimwear in ways that are not sexualized or exploitative. Context matters.

This is one game where the sexy costumes are actually contextually appropriate; it's about the Japanese entertainment industry. There's nothing "pedo" about it, either, since the girls are 18 and don't look like they're much younger or anything.

People trying to justify their anger & hate towards the game. Desperate for this game to fail for rather petty reasons and will even go this far to do it.

This game has really brought out the worst in people, like holy shit.

Isn't Mamori 11? Though she doesn't dress in anything that shows skin as far as I can tell. I'm actually curious what the localization did to her age.... Is she 12 now? lol

Not sure, I was mainly talking about the girls that are having their costumes altered.

If the changes bother you so much, try and think of it this way. The localization probably changes things way more than we all realize in a lot of games. The only thing different about this is that you actually are aware of it.

I suddenly started thinking about that when I played Tales of Zestiria and I found a skit to be pretty funny in a way that was most likely not a direct translation. Then it got me wondering how much of the intended dialogue is actually there.

Oh, yeah, sorry, that wasn't entirely what I was focusing on, I was just reminded Mamori existed, and if they bumped the 17 year olds to 18, I wonder what they did with Mamori at all. (though, I think, she doesn't have any costumes that would cause issues)

Dialogue changes != visual changes. Atlus USA, the same company that is localising this game, has made it a point publicly that they want to modify the contents of their own games as little as possible. Persona 5, for example, will not have anywhere near the same level of modifications #FE has.

I think she had a swimsuit on in the Hot Springs DLC, which is cut in the English version. Hers wasn't available as an optional outfit in battle, though, I believe.

I think we've gotten to the point where most people realize there are non-petty reasons at this point.

A few blurred costumes would be one thing. Lazy and ugly costume edits and narrative changes are another.

Damaging alterations to narrative and character development are worth boycotting and we already have one instance of it in the game so far.

Yep, it's absolutely ridiculous that anyone supports this garbage. Changing narrative and character development in such a way is unacceptable.

Please, do not buy this game. Someone at NoA is fucking up hardcore.

It's not ridiculous at all...people are free to do what they please. Stop being so aggressive with the hyperbole please. Not everyone has to agree with you.

I do not feel I'm being hyperbolic and I genuinely feel it is ridiculous. I apologize that I'm coming off as that aggressive, but I firmly believe that changing narrative and story beats so much is really, really wrong and I cannot wrap my head around someone thinking that kind of censorship is ever okay. It's one thing to cover up some character designs and an entirely different thing to cover up a story. Not to mention outright cutting the DLC from the game.

I just can't reconcile it, so I'll step out. If people are going to defend censoring a narrative then I guess I just can't connect with them.

Like I've said in the post after this one, it was mostly to point out that in those threads (TMS, XCX, FE Fates, etc), there's always some posters happy (or more than that) that this is happening, and when you push the argument a bit or wait months after release, you discover that this poster was never interested in the game enough to buy/play it in the first place. Just another case of drive-by posting, and again, not about this specific poster. Mistakenly singled him out just due to the random 6-less words sentence.
The OT mention was obviously just to refer a way of knowing if someone bought a game or not, not to say "ahah, you're not in the OT so you've never played it!".

Again, sorry if it has been misinterpreted.

Honestly, people wouldn't be so annoyed with the changes if they weren't poorly done. Changes have occurred forever in Nintendo games. Just have a mosey at the Cutting Room Floor to see examples of regional differences in games. But covering a chest in black smoke that almost clashes with the art style and making skin white rather than redesigning the dress just looks shabby, lazy and poor and due to that people are going to be picky about whatever changes have occurred, like the lady in a different position, which would have been brushed off as trivial if that was all. Obviously there's a camp who believe there should be no changes whatsoever, but I'd say if changes were more like that one unique costume there'd be less fuss.

Oh and the lack of subs in battle is poor show too. It would be poor show even with an English dub since I'd expect subs for that language track too.

Homebrew already allows for file substitutions so if someone extracted resources from the JP version you could in theory place them on an SD card and load them instead of the resources on the disc. One would have to study how files work on the disc, but this is already happening with Smash Bros.

That would be pretty great! More likely to have to use the JP version, but still nice.

It's allowing everything. It's pretty much as open as a PC at this point.
Huh, I will check it out then, sounds interesting. Japanese version is fairly cheap.

And yeah, what gets me is the shoddiness of the localization and not the fact that they decided to change some costumes.

People sure do get upset about not getting to see underage fictional boobs.

Have you actually taken the time to look through the changes? Some might be reasonable changes, but others make no sense whatsoever. Also one has to remember that there have been games with T rating that are far more crude than this game ever will be.

In fact, I did. And there's really nothing worth crying about. But why not beat the horse a little longer.

PS. I too support this type of change. The otaku dollar doesn't hold weight in the West like it does in Japan and there's no reason or need to pander to people who want underage tits all over their games.

Reading about the more recent changes, I can't help but wonder what this game will be more remembered for over time: The western localization or for not being the straight crossover between Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei that fans originally expected?

The latter.

They're not underage, though.

Who else is going to buy this game outside of videogame enthusiasts?

Protip: You're an otaku by being on NeoGAF.

Oh, and before people get too upset about the "underage tits" comment. Look at a certain game that's listed in Malyse's profile.

Senran Kagura and Neptunia say other wise, and both of them will probably sell better than this game that targets nearly no one.

Not to bring up a finer point, but they're now 18 in the western release. So your underaged point doesn't entirely hold up in this case.

Is there going to actually be an OT for the game? Since most are really unhappy with the American version makes me wonder who will be left to actually make it.
