Breath of the Wild is the official subtitle for Zelda U/NX, first gameplay trailer

Good thing about not owning/playing current gen games is that I'm very easily impressed by visuals. The art style is pretty good, and helped a lot with the end result of the graphics.

Ok I'm pretty sure Link's female this time :)

Nice photoshop.

Gonna be interesting to see how Nintendo handles this supposed open-world thing. People seem to be afraid they're getting a wasteland or Ubisoft-type experience, but Nintendo has never been known to fall into that trap. Everything I'm looking at in the trailer comes with this in mind. Wind Waker's worst problem is that the whole game was perfectly aligned on a grid.

I imagine BOW might end up feeling somewhat less dense than other 3D Zelda games (excluding Wind Waker's water), but will overall still feel tighter and more carefully designed than an Assassin's Creed map or Skyrim or something like that.

I don't mind it at all. My favourite open world game is SotC precisely because of the "emptiness" which in fact isn't emptiness at all, it's called focus. Focus in important things. Modern open world games are full of useless filler in both the game world and game systems. Keep that as far away from zelda as possible.

Thank you.

Also, the final shot of the Master Sword is like the artwork from aLttP

This is one rough-looking game. I guess it is what it is being on the Wii U and all, but it looks more dated than I imagined. Barren overworld and textures that can only described as smears.

Looks fucking awesome, I've been waiting for this trailer for years.

But at this point, I wish they would have just bit the bullet and moved this as an exclusive NX launch title, so they could really take the visuals to the next level and not be limited by the Wii U. 2 years ago, I wouldn't have said this, but now? Seems like it would have been the better move, and got their next console to an amazing start with a must buy title, not to mention having a more impressive game not limited by this hardware. Missed opportunity, since it will probably take another half decade at least for the next console Zelda, if not more.

Great post is great.

Agree. I think the emptiness makes it feel "grander", if you know what I mean.

"This game trailer made to convey the vast wilderness of the fields of untamed Hyrule without any gameplay shown is so fucking empty and I played games before and I don't need to see the whole stream dedicated to playing it."

I'll watch more, don't worry. I hope the world suddenly comes to life. But i doubt it.
The whole thing looks like a consession to lack of power.

Yeah but that's not what they are going for.

This seriously looks surprisingly polished for a Pokemon game. I didn't think GameFreak had these types of production values in them.

The music and UI are both ace so far.

RE: The emptyness.

Feels like they are going for a wilderness kind of approach for this game (it's in the title). There seems to be plenty of wildlife, but not a whole lot of humans. Compare to an open world game like Skyrim or the Witcher, where there are settlements everywhere, this seems to be more focused on exploring nature. I'm sure there are towns and cities, but not everywhere. Looks like there's a lot of ways to interact with the environment, though, so I don't think I'd classify that as "empty". It's just not filled with people to talk to. At least, we haven't seen any yet.

Yeah I'm not getting the emptiness complaints. I guess people were expecting some lush towns and cities.

Well, I loved what I saw, and I will be picking it up day 1 on NX if it's released on the same day as the WiiU version.

If not, I'll probably double dip.

I love some of the designs, especially in the latter part of the trailer. I wasn't expecting the SoTC or Monster Hunter vibes but it looks like a good fit.

One thing though, did anyone else think that the color palate looked washed out in part of the trailer? It was hard to put my finger on it but it definitely looked in parts like things should be more vibrant or pop more. I mostly noticed it in some of the daytime outdoor shots.

These kinds of "it looks empty" reactions seem extremely superficial. If a game shows a couple of wide angle landscape shots that show how large the world is, suddenly it's lifeless and empty.

Yeah, it's a super vague and lazy criticism. People saying that really need to back it up with words cause right now it just reads like "I can't see the minimap with waypoints and collectables and repetitive activities everywhere."

Wind Waker is 60fps on Wii U. Not sure why what we have seen here seems impossible in 60fps on Wii U ? I mean, look at Bayonetta 2. Much more going on on screen, and still 60fps.

No it isn't. It's 30 MOST of the time, and it drops severely at times causing the game to run in slow motion.

Bayonetta 2 has severe drops, as well.

Think it's intentionally looking slightly "empty". Seems a kind of post-apocalyptic/wilderness vibe so lack of humans makes sense. Although I'd wager that changes throughout the game.

Ok, people, let's get serious. Is the rage inducing pop up presentation of each item that you pick up still in the game?

Still on the fence. Seems like a Zelda game + Survival game. The hunting, cooking etc could be an interesting addition to the gameplay if they do it right and not just have it a padding.

I am torn on the toon/cell shading aspect. The cell stuff looks ok but its pretty jarring with the low res textures and filtering on everything else. Would be nice to get some direct footage as well, minus all the YouTube crappiness.

I am sure the extended showing will fill in more of the questions people have.

As someone who hasn't played a single Legend of Zelda title, this looks...alright? The world is huge, but it looked rather barren. I do like the interactivity with the environment, that is really neat.

the difference is the last couple of 3d zeldas have had empty overworlds that still completely lacked focus

it's not like an empty overworld suddenly means everything is "focused". you're giving them too much credit.
