Crash Remasters will be completely full-on remade (According to VV)

Has any media asked how far along they are in development?

If they are actual remakes, and nothing can be imported from the old games (simple geometry or something), then this collection could years away still, or will each game get it's own release?

The lack of details suggest they might not be far into the project.

Remaster and remake imply two distinct things.

........

No shit.

Let me rephrase even though my Ratchet comment should have made it perfectly clear:

Didn't they announce these to be remakes a la Ratchet and Clank like I said? I didn't think this thread was new news at all.

when they said from the ground up for the PS4 those were my hopes something a la r&c

Exactly. "From the ground up" does not mean up-res. It means they're making the games from the ground up. Like Ratchet and Clank.

I swear some people can't read lol.

With them doing three games it's pretty clear it's going to play the exact same but with updated textures / hopefully various other improvements.

My biggest fear was we were just getting the originals similar to the FF7 PC version coming to PS4.

Thats what Shawn Layden said "From the ground up". I just wonder whose handling it. Seems hard to believe it will be of the caliber as the R&C remake if its Activision handling it..

Either way im just glad hes back and after they do well hopefully we get a new game.

I'm still optimistic
But just want to remember one of the last remake/remaster from Activision

anyone else get real bothered by the constant misuse of the words remaster and remake?

Yep, it makes it impossible to really tell how extensive the work will be. You see that with Modern Warfare as well. That's not a remaster and yet it's called Modenr Warfare Remastered. Just look at it

That's a full on remake.

For those still confused on what this means, think of it like this:

Edit: or the example above.

So it's those guys making it...now I'm nervous. He seems kinda slow in that video aswell, his walking speed.

I don't remember being able to throw tnt crates in the first one.

I just hope the controls are 1:1. I remember the Tony Hawk remake played completely differently, and it was pretty disorienting.

Yeah. After playing Crash 1, I've realised that Crash controls like 8-bit Mega Man in that game. There's no momentum to the jumping or running, so a jump taken from a standing position is the same as a jump taken from a jogging state. The game is designed around that.

For people worried about the remakes/remasters, Vicarious Visions did a lot of great work over the years.

They produced a number of Crash Bandicoot titles from 2002-2004 including the following:
  • Crash Nitro Kart
  • Crash The Huge Adventure (GBA)
  • Crash N-Traced (GBA)
  • Crash Purple
The first was a great kart racer that was faithful to the original Crash Team Racing, with original artists coming back on board to help with the title and core gameplay that heavily mirrors CTR. I wrote a Retrospective on the project that goes into great detail on Crashy News for more information on the title.

Continuing talking about CNK, they made a GBA version of the game that was very feature-complete compared to the console versions. Despite being on far weaker hardware, the full adventure mode (with a map to drive around), the drifting/boosting working like the console versions and visuals that were very impressive at the time.

The N-Gage version of the title is a hyrbid of the two versions and is a solid game too.

Their last set of Crash games were 2D GBA platformers, with Crash Purple being a mini game collection that crosses-over with the Spyro series. While Crash Purple has issues, the two platformer GBA games they made were damn solid and honored the Naughty Dog games with much respect.

Vicarious Visions also produced the best Skylanders games, with Swap Force being the one that expands the series a lot with more platforming elements and a significant presentational boost while SuperChargers is closer to a normal character/mascot platformer in many cases.

They are a great studio and are a perfect fit for Crash.

What is there track record?

They've been around since the mid-late '90s and have developed a lot of games that rage from good to not good. They currently develop a lot of the Skylanders related games for Activision and have developed a few original Crash games for the GBA and gen six consoles in the past too. They are currently making Skyladers Crash as well as the remakes. I guess they could be looked at as the Crash "B" Team given their history. But that might not be a bad thing.

I just hope the controls are 1:1. I remember the Tony Hawk remake played completely differently, and it was pretty disorienting.

Nah, the first two games could have really benefited from analog control.

EDIT: Also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CHANGE THE CONTROL FOR THE JET-PACK IN CRASH 2

Did anyone ask for this? Games hold up pretty well for PS1 era platformers, if they're gonna spend the time and money to remake them I rather just have a new game

The games hold up great. I replay Warped every few years and the game is still fantastic. If they were going to spend time remaking a Crash game they should have done CTR.

Same. They need to do what Microsoft did with the Halo remaster: have a second engine running in parallel to the original one, with the purpose of displaying different graphics.

I would murder someone for a remake of Crash Team Racing, or just a new one in general.

Eh, that's unfair. These guys seem to get it for the most part. They've been going back to Willy Wombat concept art, even.

That character model is so fucking weird, I have 3 different reactions to all 3 of his poses and the face he makes.

The first pose is sorta like classic Crash, the second is just terrible, and the last is pure Crash Bandicoot. Maybe it's just the fact that I only knew his polygonal PS1 model.

Well duh although it would be hilarious if they just upped the resolution on the ps1 versions and said here ya go!
