It's a send-up of the Batman/superhero naming convention. At this point it isn't even meant as a racial slur.
The joke is literally "It's funny that we keep saying it because it's a racial slur." That is the beginning and end of it. It's lazy as fuck, especially from creators who are capable of pulling something a bit more fucking interesting and biting. But no, "teehee, we said 'coon'".lol. Criticize away.
Since when is pointing out something shitty "drumming up controversy?" Am I writing an article? Starting a hashtag? Are you actually uncomfortable because they use coon or are you drumming it up as a controversy because you want it to be one?

First a definition:
Coon - An insulting name for a black person. Similar to 'Nigger'.

Cool? Now let's watch the developer introduce the game: https://youtu.be/RVt25bOM6eM?t=3224
Black man: "What's up homie?"
White man: "Can't you coons talk proper English?"
Black man: *Shoots White Man*
What's with that Morgan Webb chick? Where did she go? She still working in the industry or has she graduated to porn yet?![]()
I know the context. So do they. Of the word, of the history behind it. But hey, why can't we all just sit back and laugh and the repetition of a slur once in a while, huh? Ain't no problem with it..You're literally ignoring the context of it if you think that's the only reason it's funny dude. That isn't where the joke begins or ends.
It's not a biting criticism of society sure but there's more to the joke than "lol it's a slur xD" as has been pointed out by other people.
And as far as your second point goes, maybe poor choice of words but that doesn't mean it's a useless point. If you're not offended by it then why bother dragging it through the mud for being offensive?
You don't get the joke. It's a bit deeper than that.
The joke is that as 8 year olds, the kids don't understand that it's a racial slur. It's meant to portray the naivety of children. You don't have to like the joke, but it's more than just saying the word "coon" over and over again.
Yes, you can laugh at a slur once in a while if the context is right. Sorry you've become so warped by political correctness that you believe it has to exist in comedy as well.I know the context. Also what's the prerequisite level of boredom or discomfort to being able to comment on it? It's a shitty joke. Sorry you're bothered by me calling it out.
I get the joke just fine. It's a poor joke.
Austin Walker puts it pretty damn succinctly.
On a less funny note.... what the fuck.

Is there a version of this gif without the caption?

Austin Walker doesn't get the joke, and neither do you, despite me explaining it twice already. We're getting a bit off topic. I think this conversation would be a better fit in the South Park: FBW thread.
The joke you're claiming to have supposedly gone over my head (and Austin Walker's, and literally everyone else who seems to have a problem with it), is that Cartman, a notoriously shitty and usually antagonistic character on South Park being too innocent about a racial slur, and instead it gets repeated ad nauseum within the span of a 10 minute presentation. That's the nuanced joke you're claiming I apparently don't get.
The joke isn't hard to get, it's bad and purposely offensive. The naivete of fictional 8 year old children doesn't change the fact that an actual adult wrote that into their mouths.
You seriously think Matt Stone and Trey Parker are purposely trying to offend their black audience?

I think they're making a cheap joke under the guise of satire.
Damn South park still rustlin feathers for almost 20 years
right on
Harada is NEVER EVER cringe worth.
He is always awesome.
Yeah man, really sticking it to people who think racial slurs are shitty. Right on.Damn South park still rustlin feathers for almost 20 years

I think the problem people have with racial slurs are their use, right? Like South Park aren't using it as a slur - the joke is "Look at this otherwise legitimate superhero name that is a slur these characters (or Cartman) is oblivious to".
It's not the smartest humour but I don't see it as an endorsement of the word.
Right. One of the issues people tend to have with the use of racial slurs is white people attempting to make light of them and claim ownership of them.
"Hey white guys! Racial slurs are okay as long as you make them funny" Is clearly some racist shit.
Yeah... After their FF7/Shenmue reaction thing, I think they feel mandated to make those types of reactions their "thing". And to me, it comes over as such.
