E3 2016s "Cringe" Moments

KJJIb8h.jpg

Harada is NEVER EVER cringe worth.

He is always awesome.

It's a send-up of the Batman/superhero naming convention. At this point it isn't even meant as a racial slur.

lol. Criticize away.
The joke is literally "It's funny that we keep saying it because it's a racial slur." That is the beginning and end of it. It's lazy as fuck, especially from creators who are capable of pulling something a bit more fucking interesting and biting. But no, "teehee, we said 'coon'".

Are you actually uncomfortable because they use coon or are you drumming it up as a controversy because you want it to be one?
Since when is pointing out something shitty "drumming up controversy?" Am I writing an article? Starting a hashtag?

You're literally ignoring the context of it if you think that's the only reason it's funny dude. That isn't where the joke begins or ends.

It's not a biting criticism of society sure but there's more to the joke than "lol it's a slur xD" as has been pointed out by other people.

And as far as your second point goes, maybe poor choice of words but that doesn't mean it's a useless point. If you're not offended by it then why bother dragging it through the mud for being offensive?

You don't get the joke. It's a bit deeper than that.

The joke is that as 8 year olds, the kids don't understand that it's a racial slur. It's meant to portray the naivety of children. You don't have to like the joke, but it's more than just saying the word "coon" over and over again.

Whoever was playing FF XV for the MS Press Conference was pretty terrible at it or at least looked like there were. Having never played the game it seemed like he was trying to do something but kept on failing and just got hit by that Titan a lot. I'm pretty sure I spotted a couple of moments when the Japanese dude that was talking had that "oh shit...wtf are you doing" look on his face.

I see a lot of South park hate, weird. If Cartman know it was a slur for black people, he would never use that name lol. I guess in the game he will learn it and get mad about it. ( I'm french first, so i just learn it now lol, i saw it like him, like RaCoon )

And i think the Jamie Fox coughing was a joke about the other rapper publicly smoking weed in the place (we saw them on twitch lol, snoop and wiz i think).

My Cringe moment was the Scorpio annoncement and the "The best pixels we never created" lines lol.

I know the context. So do they. Of the word, of the history behind it. But hey, why can't we all just sit back and laugh and the repetition of a slur once in a while, huh? Ain't no problem with it..

Also what's the prerequisite level of boredom or discomfort to being able to comment on it? It's a shitty joke. Sorry you're bothered by me calling it out.

I get the joke just fine. It's a poor joke.
Austin Walker puts it pretty damn succinctly.

Yes, you can laugh at a slur once in a while if the context is right. Sorry you've become so warped by political correctness that you believe it has to exist in comedy as well.

And yet, you still don't get the joke if you think the joke is just the slur. Jesus.

I just don't get your argument, you say you get the joke but keep repeating the joke is just the slur when that's clearly not the case, and also maintain you aren't offended yet keep saying how offensive the slur is. So, what am I missing here?

Austin Walker doesn't get the joke, and neither do you, despite me explaining it twice already. We're getting a bit off topic. I think this conversation would be a better fit in the South Park: FBW thread.

The joke you're claiming to have supposedly gone over my head (and Austin Walker's, and literally everyone else who seems to have a problem with it), is that Cartman, a notoriously shitty and usually antagonistic character on South Park being too innocent about a racial slur, and instead it gets repeated ad nauseum within the span of a 10 minute presentation. That's the nuanced joke you're claiming I apparently don't get.

Not really.

The joke is that superheroes, in this case Batman, usually follow an animal motif. Batman and many other superheroes usually name their personal crime fighting repertoire after said motif, which is kind of egotistical. In this case it's the Coon, which in any other scenario would be completely fine, EXCEPT that 'Coon' has a history as a racial slur. So now the trope is turned on its head; EVERYTHING gets the word Coon in front of it, because that's what would happen with any other animal. It's a completely normal part of the superhero mythos turned into something awful, because the person doing it is naming everything after himself to stroke his own ego.

Maybe you and Austin and others who have a problem with it would have a leg to stand on if say, the character Token or any other black character in the show was The Coon, or if The Coon was shown doing any stereotypical 'black' things, but as it stands, I don't see it. It's SUPPOSED to be bad. It's telling you that this character is a clueless asshole.

Microsoft's was super cringe this year.

The minecraft stuff
Sea of thieves
Final fantasy
The tekken guy with the weird dude standing next to him

It was just ubisoft, Sea of Thieves and Minecraft that was cringey for me, but I missed EA.

Half the video is just people smiling while the camera person takes too long to cut to the trailer. That doesn't really count IMO.

Are people still getting riled up about South Park? Dude that show crossed the line in like the 90s. Its kinda their schtick at this point. Best thing to do is just move along if it bothers you.

Yeah man, really sticking it to people who think racial slurs are shitty. Right on.

I think the problem people have with racial slurs are their use, right? Like South Park aren't using it as a slur - the joke is "Look at this otherwise legitimate superhero name that is a slur these characters (or Cartman) is oblivious to".

It's not the smartest humour but I don't see it as an endorsement of the word or the hurtful connotations of it.

Right. One of the issues people tend to have with the use of racial slurs is white people attempting to make light of them and claim ownership of them.

"Hey white guys! Racial slurs are okay as long as you make them funny" Is clearly some racist shit.

I'm black-french-canadian ( so my english suck )

But the subtext is really where the others said. The subtext of Cartman, surely not knowing it's a slur. I dont think any kids know ( Token didnt bash him back, and he would if he know he always does when Cartman is too "bitchy" )

The one, that Cartman himself will surely bad-trip when he learn the word ( Pretty sure it will be in the game, due to be about their superheros only) And his world will fall apart due to all his thinking/promotion is about the coon and racoon. ( And he is so much racist he will not want to be associate with that )

And the other of egomaniac superhero naming all things their name.

I'm french, so i just learned here that coon was used as a slur ( it's old i guess ). So Cartman not knowing is pretty credible. Unless it's really a common racial slur in high-school or in the "street" in USA.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't even make it through the first page of this thread, as a virulent infection I've seen spreading across the worldwide web seems to have have struck GAF as well. Allow me to go off on something of a lecture.

  • 'Cringe' is not an adjective. It is a noun. Use it as such.

  • 'Cringey' is also not an adjective, nor in fact is it a word at all. 'Cringeworthy' or 'cringe-inducing' are adjectives. Use them where appropriate.

  • Consequently, 'cringiest' is not the superlative. 'Most cringeworthy' or 'most cringe-inducing' are the correct superlatives. AT A PUSH, I will accept 'cringeworthiest'.
Thank you for your time. If you, the internet at large, would kindly adhere to these rules going forward, you will make my online life considerably less stressful and more, ahem, cringe-free. Thank you in advance. :-)

Okay, to address the actual topic... I've only watched Nintendo stuff this year, and nothing really jumped out at me. Potentially cringeworthy moments were generally leavened by the relaxed, somewhat carefree attitude of the Treehouse gang; had similar things happened on a conference stage, I feel like they could easily have come off worse (Bill Trinen's first demo of Zelda still having the time-limit active, for example).

Xbox one Slim unboxing. That marketing guy who was there talking like he was selling the things to a bunch of morons was just pathetic.

Hey that new God of War looks great doesn't it?...oh we also want to take a moment of silence for the people in Orlando...

Sony should have led with the Orlando acknowledgment before all else or not brought it up.

Having Carmack show up at the MS press conference only so say "Hi, Minecraft in VR looks really nice" and nothing else. What a freaking waste of the guy's time and the chance to hear him talk about intelligent stuff.

Yeah... After their FF7/Shenmue reaction thing, I think they feel mandated to make those types of reactions their "thing". And to me, it comes over as such.

IMO, they seemed genuinely excited. The fact that RE will reverting to a slow-paced, tense game instead of the action schlock with 6.

If you knew anything about how those guys feel about Resident Evil you'd know that that reaction as 100% genuine. It's not "their thing" to do reactions like that. Resident Evil is Huber's life just as much, if not more than, Shenmue is. He loves horror games and movies, RE2 is his favorite game of all time, and hates RE6 with a passion. This was huge for him.

Cringing at EZA or thinking that they're not genuine is pretty sad.

I have a confession. I.....had no idea coon was a racial slur until this thread. I didn't know that was the joke in South Park. I've never once heard that term used as a racial slur in my life. I don't know if it's just an American thing or it's just a term from before my time but yeah I'm as oblivious to that as Cartman is.
