as a guy who's completed a few games,

it's the most rewarding and effin annoying thing I've ever done.

edit:
just giving a heads up to make sure you're sure.

I too would like to get my game making on, so I'm with you OP. Been looking at systems between RPG Maker, Stencyl and Unity, but not sure where I want to go. Probably RPG Maker for my first effort, to see what I can do. Luckily there's so many learning resources and videos out there.

Now is as good as time as any to start making games!!

The real problem isn't the ideas or technical know how, its the will and endurance to finish the project...everything else can be completed or learned on the way!

Good luck, OP! I have very little programming knowledge but I love game design, so I am working on something more analog that anyone can play anywhere yet is inspired by competitive video games. Keep us updated on matchstick girl :) Sounds like a solid concept!

After an afternoon of research and watching first episodes of tutorials, I think I'll try to figure out Visionaire first. It's not free, but it's got a free demo you can use all you want until you actually want to sell/compile your game, which seems alright. Even then it's 50 bucks for the indie single license, so it's affordable as well. Also its portfolio of completed software is really impressive, and it requires no coding at all for beginners.

Since I won't have access to my tablet since way later today, I think I'll start with trying to just make up a super general storyboard to get somewhat of an overview of how many screens i'd need and maybe to see if some fun story/setting ideas pop up along the way.

Thinking along the lines of

(Room/Puzzle1) - (Room/Puzzle 2)
. |
(Room/Puzzle3)

but it'll probably get either way more complicated or scrapped after 30 minutes heh.

I'm a software developer but I never tried to make a game, I lack creativity I guess :p
Did you already try to make a game on RPG Maker or something similar ? Or is it your first attempt at making something ?

I have been looking to do a game, I have some unity experience, I have made a handful of crappy games and I have made a few environments, but I can help in programming with unity, or Java.

I am finishing up summer school taking a data structures class.

Some of the stuff I have done in unity.
A terrain I made for a Unity class

and here is a dropbox link for a small game I made for the same class that was displayed in a local gaming exhibition.

I've been gaming for so long - I think I could make something that is both fun/simulating for the player - mainly because I've been the player for so long. And yet so many games come out which aren't any of those things..which tells me the people behind them either didn't know what they were doing - or couldn't achieve what they wanted but still released the product anyway.

Regardless, I too have zero programming knowledge so I'm probably gonna wait until game-design is actually noob-friendly. Some sorta software that you can just pour your imagination onto..and watch results unfold .

Yeah it could possibly take 30 years or so for said software to exist.

I played around with RPG Maker, various adventure game creator software and Unity, but at no point I actually accomplished something that could be called "playable", I really just toyed around. As I said though I did do game/puzzle design for a different project that never finished, which tought me a bit about how "my" process for this makes sense or not for me.

Noo, do it! There are tons of different game creation suites, Game Maker, RPG Maker, lots of adventure/visual novel stuff, and ofc. Unity if you don't mind learning to program. From what I tried of it, it's absolutely manageble to come up with something by watching a bunch of tutorials and fiddling around, if you keep your will to do so (which will probably be my biggest problem too).

Love to help. I'm a writer. You could always use one of those, right?

Aw man :) Maybe? IDK yet, but for now I wanna try for myself as I said earlier :)

Here's how far I got so far:

I was just thinking two nights ago about starting to write a narrative for a Sierra-styled adventure game in the vein of their works from the late 80s and early 90s. I have zero experience coding but I'd love to flex my muscles with some dialogue/scenario writing.

Let me know.

yeah i don't know still if this will actually work out in the end, but at least I'm starting somehow, I guess :D

I forgot how complicated these things get, and I didn't even think about the actual puzzles yet, just figuring out how a compelling world might look like and how to open up things so that it's an actual game in the end.

I'm already working on a game with a female protagonist tho. Technically I'm only working on the multiplayer component on a budget of zero dollars, but whatever. Game's playable but so rough I'm not showing it to anyone. Still trying to figure out how to find some animators to get some of the 3D stuff dealt with.

You have a very strange notion of how games are developed XD You being the player has nothing to do with your ability to create.

You can play any piece from Mozart of Beethoven but that doesn't mean you will be able to write music.

There is software that does allow you to make a game without coding knowledge and some are very powerful. But you still have to have some grasp of problem solving.

Try this 2-second exercise:
I want you to think about a DOOR.

Put this door in your imaginary game. Once you've finished in your mind - I want you to read this:

http://www.lizengland.com/blog/2014/04/the-door-problem/

Then you can see how badly your door has failed at existing in your game ;)

there, first sketch of the character. I'm not a fantastic drawer, but I hope you'll get the general idea. Man, this reminds me that I'll have to animate her at some point, and I don't even have a name yet.

If you'd like art help, I worked on the visual identity, promotional design, and overall art direction for 3 day conventions, events, and many other projects.

I always thought a game that uses Google Earth to create game worlds from any area, then overlays different in game characters and items, depending on what genre of game you want to play, would be the best game ever. You could have a zombie apocalypse game set in your very own town, for instance.
I'm nor sure if technology is powerful enough yet to be able to make such a game but it could be incredible, and the best value for money.

I've also wanted a modern game that uses old school 16-bit/early arcade type graphics, but includes incredible depth to what you can do in the game. Like a game based on Aliens, like Alien Breed, say, but where your character can climb, dive, jump, drive, destroy buildings and walls etc, hide....Such games could be fantastic and wouldn't need a lot of money to create nowadays, would they?

If anyone needs help with 3D stuff, lemme know! Need to add some more portfolio items. I'm good with modelling, rigging, animating, etc.

Considering how Dudebro 2 turned out, I think it would be best to focus on RPG Maker rather than go all out like last time.

I won't discourage you, in fact we live in an era where if you want to make a game, the only thing really stopping you is yourself and ability to pick up on things.

However, and this is my severe recommendation: Minimalize your concept, keep it simple, do something that excites you, find a way to keep yourself motivated, and realize your first game is never going to be your best game. I've been releasing a few small games on Steam, and they've been surprisingly getting very good response, despite my severe limitations as a developer, but I've been getting better. Been making small games since 2012, released my first game onto Steam last August with surprisingly good response (and have released a second game to positive response, and working hard right now on my third project as we speak), but again, I have severe limitations as a developer. You just gotta work with what you have.

Making a game is not easy, let alone a super ambitious game. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend start with something simple, something really simple, and build on it. If it's a bigger community project, I can contribute one or two things, but I do have my hands full with my own stuff. If you want to go for it, then go for it. Decide which engine best fits what you want to do and works well with your inexperience. But know this is not something to be decided lightly.

This said, I am interested to see where this goes.
Yeah, listen to this. Know your limits, and keep it simple. Just have fun and don't stress yourself out over it too much as it would be your first game.

I've been "about to" start a small Unity project for a couple of years now. Maybe this summer I'll actually get somewhere.

I made a really short and basic adventure game with Twine, but the shit is ass so I'm not going to share it. I really want to find a new person to work with while I contribute on what I know how to do best which is writing, but last time the motherfucker kept going ghost on me.

Well progress I guess!

My prototype character with prototype animations can now prototype walk around in a prototype scene.

Good looking stuff, OP. Keep at it.

I've always wanted to make a few games. I have quite a few well developed ideas. I have a degree in Game Arts and Design but I ended up shifting to the architectural design field. What I've always wondered is, if I make my own game, how do I make music and sound effects for it? Or are there sound and song libraries out there that I could purchase and legally include in my game while still not sounding super generic?

GAF advice in this would be great. If it's not as difficult as I think it may be I should've been making games a while ago, but it's never too late.
