Mighty No. 9 review thread

If it makes you feel any better, I pledged $612 USD (which was something close to $700 CDN at the time, IIRC).

Infinite tears.

Boy that sucks big time!!

I'll never pour that kind of money into a Kickstarter. The most I've ever spent went to my physical copy of Shenmue 3 at $60.

Cheesy extremely cringe worthy vocals aside I actually like what I've seen of the game. Its a shame they couldn't optimize the game correctly to get a rock solid 60 fps if they had even posted their technical difficulties or made their git open I am sure someone could have figured out a good solution. I think the whole mighty saga will in the end make backers more careful of future kickstarters which might be a good thing.

Before shitting on the game based on these reviews, let's remember that Nier, one of the best games of last gen, has a metascore of 68 with Gamespot, Eurogamer, 1UP and Edge giving it 5, 6, 4.2 and 6 respectively.

Take from these reviews what you will, but at least look into watching gameplay videos and maybe even trying it for yourself first.

A few hours late, but our review's just gone live as well. 6/10, I'm afraid:

My review over at Saving Content:

3 out of 5.

Overall about what I expected. It's good/decent and at some very few moments feels great, but it just doesn't hold those moments very long. I was enthralled with Shovel Knight my entire playthrough, this feels like it barely holds it together. What a shame.

Can one of you comment on the games performance? Especially console wise? I'm working right now so I can't seat and read a review but some people have been saying that the game performs poorly when it comes to framerate and that can be a deal breaker for me when the game should be fine since graphically its nothing special (like Night of Azure and Contrast).

I just regret not spending my $20 (or however much it was) on Shovel Knight

Have you played the demo?

The scores are more than fair.

I backed this, and it seems to me like I'll get roughly, albeit very, very roughly, what I expected.

But yeah, this won't be getting a sequel, methinks. They had one chance, and one chance only. And they blew it. Sucks, but I'd rather have backed this and failed than not tried at all. I only paid a sensible amount though.

Can't say I don't understand those of us that went the extra mile. I have like 600 bucks in Star citizen. Release day for that will be fun times. :D

I didn't know the backstory or anything at all, just saw 'new game review thread' essentially and clicked on it.

This game even looks like shit minus the kickstarter-disappointment factor, damn. Love old Mega Man games but staying far away from this thing.

Nier was it's own unique beast and really can't be compared to anything else.

Meanwhile, MN9 can easily be compared to decades worth of Megaman games, so it's pretty easy for reviewers to say whether or not it's a good version of one of those games.

Dammit! I was in the middle of a meeting when I saw this and couldn't stop laughing

I read the reviews they echo/confirmed the concerns we backers already shared when we got the demo. That means if you thought the demo was fun and without flaws you're golden, if you weren't satisfied this most likely won't change that.
Take that for what you will.

You know, the fact that the game turned out disappointing isn't even the worst thing. The worst thing is that Inafune turned off tons of people to crowd funding by giving them one of the worst possible experiences imaginable.

Don't be so down on it people. Crowd funding has still helped bring us a lot of great games.
Oh he managed that one too? Not a huge surprise, I know he worked under Inafune at Capcom.

I didn't follow MN9's Kickstarter closely but the one for Bloodstained was incredibly well managed. Shame the rest of the project doesn't seem to be.
Lmao what.

I love Nier, but I'd never consider it technically good lol

Watching Mighty No 9 videos makes me think 6s are too generous. Bland open levels in which platforming amounts to jumping one pit without anything to stop you, trying to hit minuscule enemies with your minuscule gun and then having to dash through them to finish them off, and so on.

this seems like a case of someone cashing in on their reputation. the few games i've kickstarted have turned out pretty good. and the latest one, Strafe, seems to be headed in a good direction.

Well then it would seem either that reputation is wrongly given or inafune has lost his mojo

I don't want to laugh, because I feel bad for Inafune. But this game has looked terrible for the last 90% of its development. These scores are actually a bit higher than I expected.

I had more hands on with Mighty No. 9 than Nier before deciding to not play it.

Meh, I dunno. I can see Inafune a couple years from now putting out a video apologizing for how this went down and then end with gameplay footage of a Mighty 2nd that displays all the things that people wanted from the game visually and mechanically.

I paid $60 and I'm fine with the end result as far as the game goes. I get the feeling we won't be getting physical rewards though.

looking forward to Giant Bomb's Quick Look

I honestly thought the game aesthetically looked godawful but felt like there could be a chance it turned out okay to good but... I guess I don't feel surprised by the reviews at the same time.

And this is why Kickstarter is a double edged sword: it can give you a great game (Shadowrun and Divinity Original Sin for example) or something like this. Still, despite the risk, I hope people aren't turned off of helping developers make the games they want.

Yeah. We've seen footage fairly extensively.

Still looks like dogshit.

Nier was a game that was obtuse, weird and completely its own beast. The mixed reviews for that game will always make sense in context. Mega Man, the style this game was trying to ape, is a known quantity. It's hardly a sensible comparison.

This. I've got piles of games from guys like Larian, inXile and Obsidian that were Kickstarted and are great. Of course, they're almost all RPGs, so maybe that had something to do with it...

How involved was Infaune with Soul Sacrifice? Hard to believe he can go from that to this.

It didn't really sell, which was also part of my point. Just saying 'people enjoyed it' doesn't mean it's great or did well enough to keep the series going.
Define "it didn't sell" because if selling over 100k FW for a new IP is bad then I don't agree with you.

Well, I backed this with $20, my first crowd funding campaign. I remember I didn't back bloodstained because of my bad experience with this (and the character design). I wanted megaman X.
Hope Recore friend out better.

I knew the game was dogshit long long ago. The reviews actually seem generous

Comparing this to Nier is such an offense to Nier.

Unfortunate.

This isn't a great look for the crowdfunding community.
This game was pitched when crowdfunding was starting to get popular. Games came out and people got better at separating the gems from the trash - see the Red Ash kickstarter.

Crowdfunding will be fine.

Sounds meh, I backed this for my brother (he likes Mega Man) and it is still the only KS thing I've ever backed.

It was only the low tier but still, I wish I had given the money to Shovel Knight, a game that came out and was FANTASTIC! Loved it! :D They got my money at release still but would have been happier backing them instead before hand.

That's the thing I guess, you just never know.

Mighty No. 9 feels like it has just been a huge mess. From the constant delays to that fool trying to get all this expansion and future brand stuff before even making sure the first up game was worth it. Tried to get so many other things going while couldn't even just get this game finished.
