Roland Emmerich Says Marvel Movies Are Silly

In a new interview, Roland Emmerich - whose Independence Day: Resurgence is not being screened for critics - has some choice words for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The director, who once made a movie in which an alien invasion was thwarted via computer virus, says that people wearing capes is "silly".

Here's the quote, via The Guardian:

“When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it. I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why.”

This is the same guy who ended a Godzilla movie with Godzilla being killed by normal military weapons. In all likelihood he just doesn't "get" them.

Also I'm pretty sure Thor is the only hero in the MCU with a cape.

EDIT: Marvel movies are silly, but so are his movies and he probably doesn't seem to get that his movies are just as silly as Marvel movies.

Yes Roland, because having a chase sequence where your characters are literally being chased down a long hallway by global warming in The Day After Tomorrow was so much more grounded and realistic in comparison.

His entitled to his opinion. Not sure why people would deny him that.

Out of interest are their any german created superheros?

Says the guy who made a movie in which humans hack into an alien mothership with an IBM laptop.

This is certainly a pot to kettle scenario but it's not like he's wrong in any way about marvel movies specifically, or the overwhelming majority of superhero movies generally.

Growing up in Germany is definitely one way to not have early and constant contact with superhero culture and i perfectly understand his point.

Well, there's Workhardman, Stayupearlygirl, Nofunallowedboy and Angela Merkel for starters.

None of them as popular as our super villain though.

I'm very certain he understands just how fucking silly his stupid movies are. The quote doesn't even say he thinks Marvel Movies are silly. The quote specifically states he thinks watching someone put on a superhero costume and start flying is silly.

I can't think of any. If there are any, then they are pretty unknown, even among German geeks. The whole superhero genre, including comics, just never reached the importance that it did in the US.

I dunno, what is a regular average joe? Does a military ace aviator attack jet pilot meet the requirements of a regular average joe?

How?

"I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it."

This is not a weird, out-of-bounds sentiment for people to have.
Oh he's not wrong, don't mistake what I'm saying. He's certainly not incorrect, it's ridiculous. They even go out of their way to say that in Avenger's 2.

But when you have your most well-known movie's turning point being when they
give the mother-ship a computer virus cooked up that morning
I'm not sure you're in the person who should be laying down the judgements on silliness in cinema. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

This quote was precious

“The spaceship, the mothership, is coming down to Earth and it’s even bigger than the old one,” says Emmerich, 60, speaking rapidly and exuberantly in an accent that shows little sign of the 25-odd years he’s been living and working in the USA. “So imagine a big object like this that has its own gravity and then what it does, it comes over Asia, sucks up Asia and then when it lands, it dumps Asia on Europe!”

Pretty sure something very similar happened in Man of Steel.

Emmerich is trying to distinguish his type of film making from the MCU by not having protags wear capes but the contrivances and 'everything is getting destroyed' is identical. He's not 'copying' them considering his pedigree started long before a 21st century Marvel Film was even on the drawing board but if the only difference between Resurgence and the next Avengers film is whether or not the flying man in underwear who saves the day at the end is a drunk a biplane or The Vision, then he's not on very solid ground when trying to elbow out his own 'less silly' space in the very crowded cinematic arena of Global Crisis Brinksmanship. It's the same, Roland. Own it. Audiences love that shit.

Roland Emmerich movies are trash

-one unlikely hero emerging rising to the top.
-One sniveling evil politician corrupt guy who is self serving for his own survival.
-comedy reliefs
-kids!!!!

you can always easily point out the corrupt politician character in each Emmerich movie early during the 1st viewing. Cookie cutter predictable
