Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Recommendations:

If you're a JRPG fan, you NEED:

Grandia II

Tales of Symphonia

They mark the beginning and end of a certain era of JRPGs. Not quite classic, but before the "fall of JRPGs" we experienced last generation. Both stories are somewhat cliche but very well executed, and the battle system in Grandia II is still one of the best in the genre. Symphonia has aged a bit in that department, but is still an enjoyable RPG with a captivating story.

Two modern games that are also great:

Dishonored - Great stealth/FPS hybrid with a very unique art style somewhat reminiscent of Half-life 2 (same concept artist)

Revelations 2 - The best Resident Evil title since Resident Evil 4, it tones back the action of 5 and 6 and reintroduces series favorites Claire Redfield and Barry Burton. A new antagonist with strong connections to pre-established lore also appears. MUST HAVE for Resident Evil fans!!

Golem, I'll try to PM you by tomorrow a list of games I made. I just need to clean it up a bit since some of my descriptions of it were hastily written :X

Doing tiers as well as mentioning the genre's will really help me find the hidden gems of the sale! I for one appreciate you taking the time to sort through people's recommendations and doing this work for the community.

I don't know how to subscribe on mobile so I'll just say thanks for a great thread and track my post later !

Edit - also getting ds2 and arma sweet

Have to recommend SOMA every chance I get. It's a truly incredible story that is full of horrifying questions. If you're like me and are also a huge baby when it comes to horror games, use this handy mod. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=560988617

That disables monsters harming you, basically making the game a walking simulator style game of simply exploring the environments to find story stuff. I think the monsters chasing you actually is detrimental to the experience as it gets in the way of finding every bit of story.

Overall: Very Positive (1,559 reviews)
Space Rangers HD - $3.74 (75% off)

I can not recommend this game enough. I unwittingly purchased it's predecessor (Space Rangers 2 Reboot) on a big sale years ago and it turned out that purchase became my best purchase that sale not to mention one of my favorite games ever.

I wish I could give an accurate description of what the game is like but I've never been able to. If you like roaming around in a universe that feels alive, building up strength trading and fighting, doing quests etc, liberating captured systems and losing them, doing RTS ground battles or text quest adventures then this game is for you (both the RTS missions and the Text quests are optional and can be ignored once and you'll never get the same style of quests offered again if it's not your thing).

I enjoyed Invisible Inc quite a bit and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in strategy and stealth. For those wondering, the campaign is only a few hours, but as the missions are randomly generated, it is very replayable. You can choose different agents to start with, and you can try some of the harder difficulty settings.

Could I suggest Rocket League? It's only a 40% discount but it matches with the lowest price it's been at before by the looks of it and it certainly fits the quality criteria.

I'll recommend Invisible Inc and Soma. Both are incredible and they're worth it at any price. I mean, Invisible Inc is a turn-based, XCOM style stealth game. ..which may sound like it could go wrong a billion different ways but they really nailed the landing. Soma's a well-crafted psychological horror game which one of the best settings around. No jump scares, unsettling themes, the works.

I also love
The Talos Principle - Puzzle game with a knack for making you feel like a genius. Also comes with a genuinely interesting story
Undertale - Great, unorthodox JRPG with one of the best soundtracks of all time
and Dishonored - One of the few modern, big budget immersive sims. Not quite as good as Thief or Deus Ex but it's damn close.

How are Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin?

What kind of RPGs are they? I was going to get them on Vita but I hear a lot of good things about them on PC

The Blackwell games are really cheap right now and they are absolutely fantastic, classic point and click adventures with a great duo of protagonists and great writing. The whole saga tells a story from beginning to end, but you can play each one as a standalone game, too.

Really really recommended to any fans of adventure games or just of good games.

The last game of the saga is not in the bundle, so you'll have to buy it separately.

Blackwell Epiphany (70% off)

That's double the limit...

Way of the Samurai 4 ($12.5)

Choose your own adventure style open world samurai action adventure game, set in late XIX century Japan.

Way of the Samurai 3 ($11.99)

Same style as WotS 4, but set on the olden times.

Some recommendations:

Dishonored Great stealth action game, you can play it however you want and you will have fun. Want to kill everyone? Go for it. Want to be a non lethal ghost? Go for it.
UBERMOSH Simple score attack game, you have a sword that can parry/cut bullets and you can pick up your enemies' weapons from the ground. Great soundtrack.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Deluxe Edition Great addition to the Resident Evil series, it has some great moments and an action packed Raid Mode for action lovers.
D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die -Season One- Quirky and witty adventure game, buy it so we can get season 2 please ;)

Oh, yeah. I'd second the recommendation for Invisibe Inc., it's really excellent.

Teddy Floppy Ear Bundle
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/80281

I have four children at home and they all adore Teddy Floppy Ear - Kayaking and Mountain Adventure. There's a bit too much reading involved for my Kindergartener (Age: 6) to be able to successfully 100% complete it on her own but last year both a seven year-old and a ten year-old did so with both of those titles easily. The games are aren't overly long (about two hours or so to finish it) but they are delightful and calming to play. A real treat for the whole family, I say. At 90%-off I'd say you'd be crazy not to give 'em a try if you have Elementary School-age children in your household.

How are Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin?

What kind of RPGs are they? I was going to get them on Vita but I hear a lot of good things about them on PC
Ys: Oath in Felghana isn't that much of an RPG. There are maybe some subtle choices, some story, exploration or stats with level-ups, BUT it is first and foremost a *top-tier* isometric action platformer

I recommend Recettear if you like goofy 2D dungeon maze type games mixed with an amusing and cute trading and sales game. I am in no hurry to beat it I just enjoy leveling my shop with custom wallpaper and hoarding gold for rare items and...oh

yeah there's a fairly robust item crafting system inside too, for creating new items to sell, or new weapons, armor, and magic for your field agents to use when they're in the dungeons gathering your raw materials.

Plays easily with kbm or controller, and its good for the price.

How are Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin?

What kind of RPGs are they? I was going to get them on Vita but I hear a lot of good things about them on PC

Both games are action RPGs with more emphasis on the action than RPG. There's levels, equipment, some sidequests (in Felghana, not Origin) but it's mostly hacking and slashing. Great music, solid platforming (which is unfortunately missing in more recent games), tough boss battles.

Would absolutely recommend both Origin or Oath in Felghana. Can't go wrong starting with either, they fundamentally similar games using the same engine, but have some pretty substantial differences. Felghana has an "overworld" that connects the dungeons and a town hub, Origin takes place entirely in a huge tower so it's constant dungeon crawling. Origin is shorter, but has three different playable characters with different playstyles, with their own takes on the story and some of the bosses are different between.

It's apparently an awful port.

Haven't most of the issues been fixed between a combination of updates and mods?

I haven't booted this up in forever, but I loved what I played not long after launch. Have they added much too it?

Yep they just updated it to v.346 which added First-pass Survival Skills, the updates have been really awesome and I'm sure the game will be out of Early Access within the next year.

I recommend the Room - a great puzzle game
http://store.steampowered.com/app/288160/

two awesome RPGs (some of the best ever in some aspects) - Trails in the Sky:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/251150/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/251290/

pretty much any game in this bundle:
http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/356/

will post some more recommendations later

I also recommend Neptunia main 3 games, especially for those that like parodies not taking themselves too seriously

and Fairy Fencer F is a nice game too
