Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

If you like the idea of creating level 987 creatures that can do millions of damage, Disgaea is your game.

I don't know why Atlus (I guess?) didn't just port

-Disgaea 2
-Disgaea 3
-Makai Kingdom
-La Pucelle Tactics
-Stella Deus

It seems like it would be a pretty easy port job. Phantom Brave is coming soon.

...Because those aren't Atlus games?

Here's my recommendation:

Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box for $4.99 (75% off)

That's double the limit...

Way of the Samurai 4 ($12.5)

Choose your own adventure style open world samurai action adventure game, set in late XIX century Japan.

Way of the Samurai 3 ($11.99)

Same style as WotS 4, but set on the olden times.

Some recommendations:

Dishonored Great stealth action game, you can play it however you want and you will have fun. Want to kill everyone? Go for it. Want to be a non lethal ghost? Go for it.
UBERMOSH Simple score attack game, you have a sword that can parry/cut bullets and you can pick up your enemies' weapons from the ground. Great soundtrack.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Deluxe Edition Great addition to the Resident Evil series, it has some great moments and an action packed Raid Mode for action lovers.
D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die -Season One- Quirky and witty adventure game, buy it so we can get season 2 please ;)
You would, Kurt. ;)

Symphonia is "fixed" in the sense that if you get the mod from the steam forums it is. Namco didn't fix it themselves. With the mod it's the best looking version + the extra content, it's just missing the 60 FPS of the GC version to be the definitive version.

I'm going to recommend Catch Me.

The discount isn't big (25%) but It's a cheap game (3,74€ with the discount) and despite being EA it's pretty stable and lots of fun, as I spent 20+ hours playing it.
Here's my own steam review for it, to give a bit of background for my rec.
Fun and challenging game, perfect for quick and short bursts of play during the day.

It's Early Access, but the game has been very stable for me.
The only problem of note I can signal is the online connection the game needs (so you can rob other players): if there are problems with the network, you will get dropped out of the session and back to the loading screen.
At the start of the Early Access a lack of servers for EU was creating problems but it was quickly addressed by the developers.

The pixel art in the game is really nice and the animations are rather charming.
The music is limited but fits the mood well and it's OK.
I've been using mostly Rosa, so I can't comment on the other 2 characters, but his voice lines are cool. He does repeat them a bit too much though.

The best part of the game has to be robbing other players' lair. The level of challenge varies, obviously, but it does make the normal mazes feel more like practice for those times when a player pops up on the map. It's also interesting to see how other players planned their maze, where they put the guards and the patterns. Makes for good learning.
Robbing others and getting robbed yourself is part of the game, so the replay feature to re-watch your stunts or the stunts pulled on you is not only a nice feature but, again, a way to learn, especially when it comes to others players paying you a visit: you get to see how they tackled your maze, what worked and what didn't in your placements of guards, helping you tighten up your maze for the next incursion.
And speaking of nice features, being able to leave a message for your victims is a nice touch.

The current asking price, 5€, is nice and cheap and, in my opinion, fully worth it.

Someone here said they fixed it. I don't know.

The last 40 reviews are positive.

FWIW, it looks like it hasn't been updated (or at least not publicly logged like they were doing initially) in months. TSFix is basically required if you want a decent experience with the game. Which is completely ridiculous, but I guess it's what happens when companies completely disregard competence and partner with the lowest bidder for their ports.

Pillars of Eternity is $18 right now. Finally got it a few days ago, only played about 12 hours so far but I'm ready to mark it down as better than all the old Infinity Engine CRPGs.

The Town of Light is $13. Really fucking dark walking simulator. Bit of a mixed bag but I remember liking it quite a bit by the end. Looks like a gaffer did an LTTP for it with more thoughts.

And I'll drop a recommendation for The Moon Sliver & The Music Machine already listed in the OP. Both made by the same guy. Walking simulators with that eerie "stuck in a bad dream" vibe that I love. The Music Machine is probably the better game. Fingerbones is free on Steam (another game from the developer) if you want a shorter taste of what those games are like.

Anyone that is interested in stealth games should buy Invisible Inc.

I've never played a more "pure" stealth game. Aiming to hack corporations and steal their data/money/weapons/etc, you're up against the clock on every randomly generated level. The clock doesn't fail you, but it makes the level progressively, irreversibly harder. Soon, you'll find yourself asking the question, "Can I afford the time to hack that safe? What if it's trapped with a virus?"

The adrenaline really starts to flow once you're finally discovered. Unlike other games where you can scramble under a box or even just fail, all bets are off. Do you kill the guard with a heart monitor that alerts more guards? Do you stun him, leaving behind an agent to keep him choked out? Or perhaps just try to lose him in the shadows...

Suppose you've failed at eluding the guard. He incapacitates your agent with the cloaking ability. Do you trek forward without her? Do you try to rescue her, forcing an agent to move at 1/4 the speed because they're carrying her body? Damn, you should've leveled up the other guy's STR stat instead of spending that money on a flashbang that doesn't work on drones. (Yes, there are RPG elements here.) Why did you pick the drone level?? Maybe the safest approach is to loot her weapons and leave her in their hands...

All of these questions and more are racing through your mind as you scratch your head, trying to get yourself out of a predicament your greed has placed you in.

Oh, and I'm also recommending Dark Souls. Don't think anyone needs more write-ups as to why.

Oh oh, and +1 to Recettear.

Darkest Dungeon

When a team of max level warriors is wiped out, you will want to hide in bed and cry. But since I'm hopelessly addicted to this game I always come back. And the gameplay really is very good and varied, but keep in mind that there is also a lot of grind.

Assault Android Cactus

A really fun, hard, balls to the walls shooter. It is well balanced and extremely polished. And I get a constant 60 fps no matter how many enemies are on screen.

I'd also recommend Invisible Inc.

Raw, Naked Shilling, just how you like it.

Legend of Grimrock 2: The GOTY for 2014
weak year my ass
~ $8.39 (65% off)

dux5Ldk.png

You know those games that come out and feel good, feel right, and play right, but they juuuuuuuuuuuuuust don't have the scope, polish, or the design in a few facets quite right to really work, but so damn enjoyable and honest and true in their aim that you like the game and wish the devs the best on the next adventure? That was Grimrock 1.

And you know that NEXT game, that takes the scope, polish, and design critiques and sends that sequel thru the roof with some of the best-thought out gaming you've experienced and an all-time classic? THAT'S Grimrock 2.

They did so much so right in this game.

A grander scale with a whole island full of smaller dungeons to explore. More puzzles. More secrets. More variety. More ambience. More choice. More monsters. More loot. More boss fights. More MORE.

It's a much more stabler adventure, with fewer bugs and those were squashed within two weeks of launch. And on top of that, Almost Human fixed the skill system with a PROPERLY simpler one. No more meaningless maxed Spellcraft bonus; everything having 5 tiers and everyone having access to every school makes for some crazy min-maxing and "sure, why not?" class ideas like Fighters who have high INT and spam magical special weapon attacks to complement 1's single example of dual tomahawkin' Mino Rogues. It's fun!

Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky: FC ~ $9.99 (50% off)

Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky: SC ~ $19.49 (35% off)

I cannot praise these games enough, either. Outstanding light narrative, slick humor, SWEET JESUS THESE SOUNDTRACKS, excellent characterization, wonderful world-building, just a delight.

Know of Estelle and Joshua's journey. Know face-rocking music. Know JRPGs "like they used to be". Know it today. :P

Blood: One Unit Whole Blood - $1.49 (70% off, cheapest Steam price on record at isthereanydeal.com (though it was $1.24 at GMG in July 2015)

Great old school FPS on the BUILD engine (same engine as Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage). Great array of weapons, one liners, and horror movie references. 90% positive reviews on Steam. No source port available though, so it has to be played through DOSbox.

Also looking for possible recommendations on The Original Strife: Veteran Edition.

I recommend Disgaea PC, for the low price of 14.99 you will be thrown into hell and help a young prince take his rightful place as king after his father's recent passing. Join Laharl, Prinny #1, Etna, Prinny #2, Flonne, Big Sis Prinny, and friends through a fourth wall breaking coming of age story. The genre you ask? The genre is: Tactical Espionage Prinny Strategic RPG

I can second these. It still kind of surprises me that I enjoyed these games since normally RPGs that are so reliant on their writing aren't my thing. Surprisingly good games.

Any particular recommendations for Linux stuff beyond page 18 of that listing?

So far I'm likely to buy The Fall, Breach & Clear, Gemini Rue, Penumbra, Gunpoint, Hotline Miami 2, Saints Row IV, and The Witcher 2. I already have a lot of THQ games from a previous humble bundle, Sanctum 1&2, and don't really need to repurchase anything that is on PS+.

Seconding the Hexcells recommendation
Got to agree with recommending Hexcells as well. While the random level generator in Infinite wasn't as interesting as I expected, all the levels across all 3 games is definitely worth the bundle's price for anyone interested in puzzle games.

I'm so getting Adr1ft and Ethan Carter for whenever I get a VR headset. Should be two good games for my first experience with VR.

Another recommendation for Trails in the Sky FC/SC

...I cannot put into words how good these are at characterization and world building so just go play these games now.

If I was going to get one way of the samurai title which would be best?

I want to know this too. I played the first one on PS2 way back in the day so I know I like it, but I want to know which one is more worth getting.

Recommendations:

Dark Souls 1 - I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the game, but because of the recent resurgence of players, now is a great time to play.

Tormentum - This is a reasonably short point & click with an art style that I'm into and includes meaningful choices. If you aren't a fan of point & click though, this won't change your mind.

SOMA - This seriously has one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a game. Even if you have to use the "wuss mode" mod, get it and play through.

Definitely recommend The Evil Within. I played it twice on PS4 so I don't know how it runs on PC but for $10, the game itself is worth buying. Looking forward to the eventual sequel.

Shadowgate (2014) - $2.24 (85% off)

Excellent update of the classic game that stays true to its roots but also adds some new content/puzzles. Great for old fans as well as those looking for a challenging point-and-click adventure.

Also looking for possible recommendations on The Original Strife: Veteran Edition.

I'm picking up Strife:Veteran Edition because it's motherfucking STRIFE.

So, Strife was a really awesome FPS that had an awesome setting and a neat RPG component to it, but suffered due to the fact that it came out around the same time as *Quake* and it was built on the *Doom* engine.

Yikes.

Let me set the scene for you and tell me if this sounds like it's up your alley. The world is post apocalyptic; The Order are a group of cultists who hoard all the technology and have enforcers that will fuck you up if you do any funny stuff in town, and The Front are the scrappy rebels you join to wreck their shit. You find parts of a sigil as you get through various levels that gets steadily more powerful, you get various types of crossbow bolts for dealing poison damage, explosive damage, etc. There are dialog trees and townspeople to talk to, and did I mention all of this is running on the *Doom* engine?

It's cool as hell, but was stuck in rights hell for a long time after the dev went under. The veteran edition is what happens when a group untangles the rights nonsense, and puts together what's essentially a remaster of the game.

So, yeah. 2.50? I'm there.

For those recommending Trails in the Sky FC and SC... as someone who's a couple hours into FC currently, do I need SC right away or is the first game self-contained that I can potentially wait until the winter sale to pick up SC?

SC picks up right where FC leaves off, so no.

Also, I'll speak up and recommend Hyperdimension Neptunia rebirth 3 Also Hyperdimension U

If you buy it, you know what you're getting into, and if you're into lighthearted JRPG niche fluff, it's the highest quality of low quality. I played the PS3 versions of the others so I can't speak to them but the system is largely the same so they play almost exactly the same from what I hear,

U is basically Senran Kagura but toned down some (do yourself a favor and get the unbreakable costumes for Rom and Ram ASAP.) Fun and mindless.

It's... pretty much the most direct direct sequel ever. It picks up like within hours of FC's ending and you transfer over alot of the stats and event flags also carry over. Really, they are practically two halves of the same game.

FC is sort of a self contained story, but it does end on a cliffhanger that will probably motivate you to keep playing.
