Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

Any recommendations for some good low spec games?

These are all good low spec games.

Don't Starve - a Very polished introduction to the survival genre. Lots of post release support and multiple expansion packs available.
Neo Scavenger - Fallout meets The Road. You awake from a cryogenic tube in a deserted laboratory wearing a hospital gown and a mysterious headband. Going out into the hex-based world has you scavenging but you only come back with pebbles and shards of glass. You find shoes, oh but its only a single left Croc, so you wrap your right foot in dirty rags. Combat has it's own screen where you have many options like taking cover, hide, advance slowly, advance fast, charge. If you trip you don't get back up automatically; you can fight from the ground, or crawl. The mechanics are very indepth and the world punishing, but you want to keep picking at it finding out more.
bit Dungeon II - Cool rougelite dungeon crawler with art influenced heavily by Link to the Past.
Her Story
Genesis games Many awesome classic games that run on any PC. Sega released a launcher that is a 3D bedroom with all your games on the shelf, and a *day night cycle!*
Neo Geo games A bigger pack is available on Humble Bundle right now. They added some Steam keys to what they sold in December, so that might continue as the games appear on Steam.

Pretty good! Or not! I see we want lowest prices ever only.

These aren't the lowest sale price ever, per the OP
Ronin
The Escapists
Super Galaxy Squadron
Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds
Long Live the Queen
D&D Chronicles of Mystaria

Alright, caught up with everything in the topic before this post. Some games I had to reject as they'd been cheaper/didn't meet the 25% off or more criteria, but still free to mention them in the topic.

I will take a break for now, but please you all continue listing. When I get back at it, I'll pick up from this post and continue. Also plan to make my own recommendations (may do so tonight and then update them into the posts when I resume), and continue to sprinkle more games into it. Happy the Recommendation system seems to be working, I thought it might be helpful and encourage people to talk, but I wasn't sure if it'd work.

I'll be using this list myself when my paycheck comes in, but until then, much to update still about it.

Why am I Dead at Sea doesn't have a discount?!

That would have been my recommendation

That was one of my big recommendations during last Winter Sale as an underlooked gem, happy some picked it up then, shame it didn't have a discount this sale. It's actually quite good.

So, based on someone mentioning this in another thread, I picked up Ghost 1.0 among the many games I bought today. I did this because the developers made Unepic which was a very flawed action platformy...thing about a guy who goes to take a piss in the middle of a DnD game and gets transported to a fantasy world where his body is inhabited by a being of utter darkness. The game plays very stiffly and had rather...rough gameplay and systems and fairly...okay art. What kept me playing it however was the writing was really funny and I enjoyed the characters a lot.

Now the reason I bought their second game Ghost 1.0 is because Unepic had potential even with all it's flaws. If it could nail the gameplay, the good writing could carry it to being a great game.

So, that's exactly what they've done for Ghost 1.0.

maxresdefault.jpg

The writing is back and cleverer than ever but the setting is a future where an operative paid by a small group is smuggled into a technology company's space station to steal their cutting edge AI tech. Ghost and her interactions with her radio support are really well done and though I haven't played a ton the plot has already intrigued me. Ghost has a fun personality and her two radio contacts are charming and goofy enough.

What they have improved upon tremendously is the gameplay. The game is now much more of a Metroidvania with a strong focus on the Metroid part and less of one on the vania. In addition stealth is heavily important so the game also has an aspect of Mark of the Ninja to it, though admittedly more sluggish and slower.

There are two ways you can play through the store: the classic mode which is your standard Metroid set up of a fixed map and progression where if you die it reloads and you keep your items, and more interestingly a rogue-lite mode where you start with a random item and play the game through a procedurally generated map where it's game over if you die and you lose all your items. But the story actually still progresses in the rogue-like mode.

The big conceit of the game, and why it's called Ghost is that your character can leave her robot body and assume control of other robots/robotic stuff. Like a cyber ghost. There are some interesting mechnical things going on with this.

The controls are much better though maybe slower than some people are normally happy with but they are pretty tight and I never felt like stuff didn't work properly.

The art and animations and general aesthetic design are also much much improved and very well done this time around.

I'm very happy with this especially since it was like...7 bucks I think.

I also picked up and am loving Stasis and am going to maybe write some impressions for Aquatic Adventures of the Last Human, Leap of Fate, Momodora and Oxenfree as those are the games I picked up day one.

Dishonored and Invisible Inc. play very differently, but they make up two of the best stealth games in the last few years; I heavily recommend both. Note that these recommendations extend to their DLC bundles, as Dishonored's DLC includes a second campaign that is on par (some say better) than the base game, and Invisible Inc.'s greatly improves the pacing of the campaign.

This post is speaking to me. I wanted both of those this sale, and already put 45 hours into Dishonored base game.

+1 for Recettear

Great little item shop game with some basic gameplay with character classes.

The main draw is the item shop portion, bartering and selling items that you get in dungeons is really satisfying. Honestly, there are no games besides some MMOs that deliver that kind of gameplay. Really fun.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Valkyria Chronicles, $5, 75% off.
Excellent SRPG with a great story and great gameplay that is completely unique. Sequels on Steam WHEN?!?!

Really unique strategy RPG with a pretty art style. It's turn-based like X-COM but you get to move, position, and aim your units. The story can be campy but its a decent mix of serious war story and lighthearted gang of kids saving their country from anime Nazis.

Dishonored is a good evolution of the stealth genre. You get cool powers that let you zip around environments or possess animals and even guards. The level design is the real winner as the game gives you multiple pathways getting into places and around roadblocks. DLC recommended.

What a charming little game. You play the shop keeper in the RPG this time. Mostly light management sim and simple dungeon crawling. It's got a fun

Great Atmospheric FPS with some light survival elements and RPG elements (Quests/Inventory). The first game needs a mod. Never played Clear Sky as it seems to have a mixed reaction. CoP is the more polished one.

I backed this game on KS. Doesn't quite reach the level of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 or Planescape: Torment but a damn solid one of those games. Solid writing as expected from Obsidian. They managed to modernize the genre, make it somewhat accessible, but still keep a lot of the depth of ye old cRPG.

It's a very short game that has no "gameplay". The story is quite interesting and touching. Seriously, just play this game and don't look up anything about the game.

Grim Fandango Remastered $3.74 (75% off)

A very special point & click adventure. Charming dialogue, lovable characters, a unique world, and a great jazz soundtrack. Puzzles may not have aged well.

header.jpg

Day of the Tentacle Remastered - $8.99 (40% off)

Classic Lucasarts Point & Click that still holds up.

header.jpg

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut - $4.99 (75% off)

Deus Ex: HR captures many of the things that made the original great and applies it to a modern stealth action game with AAA production values. Cool atmosphere and a decent amount of freedom to tackle problems. Can't wait for the sequel that comes out in 2 months.

header.jpg

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons - $1.49 (90% off)

A short and simple game but one that evokes emotion through interesting ways. Need a controller.

header.jpg

Mark of the Ninja - 3.74 (75% off)

A stealth game that manages to make the genre fun and interesting in a 2D space.

header.jpg

The Book of Unwritten Tales - $4.99 (75% off)

A charming, a bit forth wall breaking, and not too difficult with puzzles Point & Click Adventure game.

header_586x192.jpg

Costume Quest 1 & 2 Bundle - 1.99 (90% off)

A simple and casual RPG that has a decent amount of charm and humor. Not the most complicated game but it short.

header.jpg

Alpha Protocol - $3.74 (75% off)

A flawed gem. Spy RPG that kinda plays like Mass Effect 1. Amazing level of choice and consequence. The combat is unfortunately janky but I was compelled to play through the game twice.

header.jpg

Binary Domain - $3.74 (75% off)

Crazy Japanese ass take on gear of war. It's just weird and stupid in an amazing way. Combat is surprisingly fun.

header.jpg

Buy Cook, Serve, Delicious! - $2.49 (75% off)

A well made, addicting and fun "casual" game that can get surprisingly tense. A fun way to spend 20 minutes but turns into an hour.

header_586x192.jpg

Sam and Max Complete Pack - 9.99 (75% off)

A funny and irreverent series. The first season's gameplay can be a little rough but it's a solid point & click.

header.jpg

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut - $2.99 (80% off)

A solid tactical RPG with a engaging story set in a cyber-punk world.

These are all good low spec games.

I don't think the Genesis packs include the Sonic and Toejam games, right?

Undertale - If you haven't played this game, you're literally missing out on a piece of history. This is one of the most unique RPGs in existence, and it's safe to say it's out there with the greatest. Get over the simple art style, and get into the effective storytelling and inmersive gameplay. You will not be dissapointed.

To The Moon - If good storytelling is something you like in games, it would be a crime to not play this game. Before Undertale this was my pick for best story in any game I'd ever played. It's not exactly unique, but it definetly told in such a special way that there's no way not to get it. This game will make you reflect upon life. Fuck, I love this game so much, I'll gift a collector's edition to the first person that PMs me interested in playing it.

I guess I will do my part and shill a game that is a tad special to me...

That game is Dropsy.

Dropsy
$9.99 $3.99 (60% off)

Dropsy is a point & click adventure game where you play as an abominable and misunderstood (but loving) clown. Behind that ghoulish grin lies a heart of gold, made obvious through the small acts of kindness that he bestows upon everyone (and everything) he meets.

Set after a horrific circus accident that leaves people mistrustful of Dropsy, he sets out on his ultimate quest to achieve one goal: to hug people. As a reward for fulfilling people's wishes, he gets the hug he wants. All he wants to do is spread love, after all. This is in stark contrast to world of urban decay that surrounds him, tinged with real life issues like homelessness and loss.

The game has no verbal or textual dialogue. All communication is done through symbols to convey the emotions and feelings behind what is being conveyed. The game has its own "language" that you pick up after some time, and it is no less expressive for it. It is a game about showing rather than telling, and that is not just limited to the conversations.

The artwork has a lot of personality to give life to the game's colorful cast of characters and the world they inhabit. The jazzy sountrack is wonderful, as well, adding to the richness of the game. Throughout your adventure hugventure, you will pick up tapes with different tunes on them that you can play at any tape player (and there's also a neat hug-related set of "collectibles", too).

There is so much sadness in the game, and were the game of chocolate, I would probably describe it as "bittersweet", but at its core, it's a game about heart-warming redemption through love in a very powerful, yet human way.

Though it is short and sweet, it might very well be one of my favorite games in the genre.

Parental guidance warning: may contain optional clown twerking scene.

AdvertCity, at lowest price yet (50% off, $9.99)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/365800/
It's a "cyberpunk advertising tycoon game"
The goal of the game is to take over the city; your only way of influencing the economy of the city, however, is by selling advertising to various megacorporations, and playing them off against each other. You have a reputation with each, and can unlock advertising technologies from various megacorps by getting closer to them. You can also improve your own efficiency by buying more buildings, hiring employees, and moving your headquarters; eventually you are able to perform hostile takeovers of megacorps.

I just added Neo Struct to my cart mostly because of that soundtrack. It's kind of amazing, I can't stop listening to it and the game looks cool too.

Naturally this sparked a track down games with awesome soundtracks, so I added Crypt of the Necrodancer to the cart. I bought Momodora earlier, but neglected to grab the soundtrack version.

Any further recommendations for cool games with soundtracks worth buying?

Edit: Since I'm anticipating them Hotline Miami is already covered. Same with Axiom Verge.

Just Get Through
latest

Buy it at $0.74 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/338190/

This game is insane. Do you like Super Meat Boy? Do you like Spelunky? Do you wish those two games had a baby that let you take your time learning and planning your moves? Well this is the game for you.

Its plodding 2D level platforming at its finest, basically think of the above 2 games, you get randomly generated levels that increasingly get larger and more dangerous and you have to get to the goal.

There are multiple modes, user created levels, bunches of color palettes to unlock, basically this can easily become your relax game if you want to just crank out some time having some fun doing some platforming.

Best part is at 74 CENTS everyone should have this, have no idea how well known this game is as I had never heard of it before a few weeks ago but if you haven't heard of it like me then GO BUY THIS NOW!

The Fall is $1.99, and simply amazing.

Steam said:
Take the role of ARID, the artificial intelligence within a high-tech combat suit. The Fall is a unique combination of adventure-game puzzle solving and side-scroller action, all set within a dark and atmospheric story. Get ready for a disturbing journey as you explore the world of The Fall.

I posted a brief review of it here.

A terrific top-down tactical game that is a lot of fun. I've put in over 40 hours playing it and I still haven't finished all the campaigns. It's currently at -80%, you can get it for $2.99.

Assault Android Cactus

A really fun, hard, balls to the walls shooter. It is well balanced and extremely polished. And I get a constant 60 fps no matter how many enemies are on screen.

Seconded.

Assault Android Cactus is a hard-as-nails Twin Stick arcade Shooter, but still fun with plenty of unlockable characters to try out, each with their own set weapons.

Unlike other TSS, you don't die after taking too many hits, but just get knocked down for a few seconds. Your more important goal, however, is to keep your battery power up, which acts as a timer. Empty battery means Game Over, which means you have to keep an eye out for energy dropped from the legions of enemy robots you destroy.

The biggest challenge is when you unlock Pro Mode, which activates an indicator which turns off or restarts a stage if your current stage run is almost literally anything but perfect (knocked out or losing combos).

Great music, solid framerate [60fps], daily/endless challenge and other interesting stuff to unlock.

The only thing i want in this sale is for Steam Controller to be available in my country. NOPE, NOT AVAILABLE STILLL. Will not buy from Steam until this hardware is available to me. hahaha

I keep meaning to play this one, I keep hearing great things about it. I'm going to take some time tomorrow to finally boot it up.

Are you thinking of a different game? There was one that ended on a black screen with text and pissed everybody off.

The Fall has episodes?

Yeah, the devs have stated that it will be a trilogy and they are currently working on the second episode now.

edit-

Doorkickers is also super good!

I wonder how the PC release of Valkyria Chronicles compares to the PS4 remaster, ive been meaning to pick it up.

I think Wario64 said there will be a psn flash sale tomorrow, 4.99 is hard to argue with though.

gonna list a few out myself

20XX $8.99

technically this one might not count by the rules, since it isn't technically the cheapest it has ever been due to the fact that it launched at a lower price and has been going up in price, but it is a match of the cheapest it has been since it increased in price. (either way I am confident people are overlooking it)

This game is what you would get if you mixed risk of rain with megaman. a great randomly generated megaman game that gets harder as you go through more levels where you find power ups to get stronger and get boss weapons.

Learn Japanese To Survive! Hiragana Battle $2.79
I've only played a little of this but it is well rated and a cute way to learn hiragana.

Legend of Fae$2.49
it's a cute little casual match 3 game with a nice little story.

Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered $2.39
this one is a cute word game with unlockable abilities.

Risk of Rain
fun little platforming roguelike. baffled that others haven't been mentioning it.

Games already mentioned by others that I second.
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Valkyria Chronicles
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Life is Strange

games I am sad that are just missing the lowest price
Half minute Hero 1/2
Noitu Love 2: Devolution
Rogue Legacy
Sanctum 1/2

I played Refunct earlier. It's a chill 20 minutes for $1.49. The graphics are nice, the music is nice, and it made me smile. The chill feel reminds me somewhat of Mirror's Edge. Level design seems decent too.

I gifted it to a few friends afterwards.

If you get 100%, you can set off fireworks. Make sure to raise your mouse sensitivity if using a mouse. I bound jump to right click and played that way.

Dark Souls, one of the best games I've ever played for just 5€.

Undertale, it is a unique experience that everyone should at least try to dive in.

Castle in the Darkness. 70%off for $2,99. Fun little action platformer with some very light rpg elements. It's a retro-style game, which is why I was attracted to it and it had the right influences (Castlevania mostly). It's not perfect though, controls are a bit too slippery and there is almost no invincibility window after you get hit which is gonna fuck you over a lot, but it's a fun romp with great music, well worth a few bucks I say.

vF0vcHO.jpg

Kingdom
-50%, $4.99

One of those simple to play, challenging to master type games. You're the king/queen of a little village. Grow your village by bribing guys who live in tents in the woods to join up with you. Give them bows, hammers, and scythes. Build walls, collect taxes, watch your subjects fight monsters for you. Make your kingdom safe.

Steam says I've put over 50 hours into it (?!), and I'm still not tired of it. In fact, only yesterday did I discover a couple of new things. Really beautiful and has a lovely soundtrack, too. And there's an expansion with a lot of new content coming next month that will be free for existing owners.

Here's a small list of previously unmentioned games that need all the love they can get.

Hand of Fate (-70%) - Immensely satisfying dungeon crawler and deck building hybrid with superb sound design and writing. Sadly the DLC that adds more cards and modifiers is not discounted.
Fly'N (-80%) - On par with SMB it might be the best platformer I've ever played and it looks gorgeous.
Divide By Sheep (-75%) - A well made puzzle game with surprising depth and varied mechanics.
Parallax (-75%) - First Person puzzle game with some similarities with Antichamber.
Knytt Underground - 2D platformer with some Metroid influences where you explore the world of fairies and sprites after the humans have disappeared. Sadly it's not discounted but it's not an expensive game.
Full Bore (-80%) - Puzzle platformer were you play as a mining boar, trying to find out what happened to you and this world.
